The Gresley family

I love this family so much, they are all so cool and I adore them all! Especially since these diverse characters are all related! Since I haven’t connected to half of these characters I won’t leave headcanons this time but maybe in the future once I get to know them more. Just enjoy the art for now ^^

Characters in order: Gordon, Flying Scotsman, Spencer, Mallard, Ryan, Pretty Polly (I had to include her even if she didn’t appear in the books, I love her so much)

Personally, I would pick James. He's an interesting character, don't get me wrong, but I would feel like he would be better suited to live elsewhere if he ever got his own branchline. In my headcanon, he would get the Peel Godred Branchline, and would move to the sheds at Peel Godred.

I am feeling a little controversial this fine Monday, so let me propose a scenario.

Edward and Henry get to stay for BWBA. But one other member of the OG Steam Team must leave in their place.

Spencer the Private Engine

Here's my take on Spencer!

Spencer Gresley is the high-speed, streamlined private engine in the employ of the Duke and Duchess of Boxford. Since the building of their summer house, the Duke and Duchess have been a semi-regular sight on Sodor, meaning that Spencer is as well.

Spencer is a proud and flamboyant engine, determined not only to be the best but also to make sure that everybody knows he is. Of course, coming from a family like Spencer's might explain some of this. Spencer has plenty of famous family members to measure up to. He is the cousin of Ryan, Gordon, and Flying Scotsman and is also the brother of Mallard, with the latter two possibly being the most famous engines currently running on the rails.

Spencer also has to deal with being a private engine, which is something that other engines (largely on the mainland) look down upon and view as shameful. Though this attitude does not seem to be shared on Sodor, it is difficult for Spencer to drop his Loud and Proud persona that serves as his shield.

This led to many run-ins with the Sudrian engines, none of which have ever ended in Spencer's favour. From his initial visit where he ignored Gordon's advice and ran out of water to losing an unofficial race against his almost-aunt Edward and culminating in his humiliation after hunting down Thomas and Hiro. Since then, Spencer seems to have experienced some sort of epiphany and has been making an effort to tone down his behaviour while visiting. While this has not always been successful, his efforts have been recognised by the engines, and they are at least civil with him.

Spencer does not hold value in lasting relationships due to his work making it difficult to maintain them and tends to have brief encounters and flings. There has only been one or two of known incidents of these with engines on Sodor, and in recent times, it has become clear that one could have become more had Spencer been willing to let it...

The only relationships Spencer sees fit to maintain are the ones he has with his family members. Naturally, he is close with his brother, Mallard, admiring him greatly and fiercely defending him from criticism. He's also fairly close with Flying Scotsman, clearly looking up to and admiring his famous cousin. He has also made an effort to build a relationship with Henry since learning of their family connection and has had some success.

He has a very complex relationship with his eldest cousin, Gordon. In private, it is clear that Spencer holds Gordon in very high regard, though it is hard to see when the two interact due to their rivalry. Their relationship has also struggled due to Spencer's vocal disapproval of Gordon's marriage to James due to how the relationship began. Since the birth of Hope, who he clearly adores, Spencer has tried to see past this for the sake of the children.

However, the closest relationship Spencer has is surprisingly with his little cousin, Ryan. The two were close as children and kept in contact while apart. Their bond is so close that they came out - Spencer as gay and Ryan as transmasc - to one another first. Spencer was delighted to know Ryan was going to Sodor, where he would be safe, even going so far to make sure Gordon was aware that their cousin was transgender and no longer Rhianna.

Traintober Day 19 Admire - Aspirations

“Great-uncle Nigel?” the young boy asked as he fiddled with a bolt, spinning the small metal object in his hands as he stared at the elderly man. He was scrawling on some papers, planning his next great steam engine. His brow was creased in concentration, the white hairs crossing over each other. Nigel’s brow lifted, and he looked over at the brownish-black haired youth. “When do I get to start making trains?”

“Soon, Gordon,” the elderly man responded with a tight smile. “You are still only 8.”

“That is very old, you know,” Gordon decided, turning his nose up at the mere indication that he was still a child. “I’m very much old enough to do all of the stuff you do.”

“What is the square root of 49?”

The child opened his mouth to say something, before promptly closing it again.

“There’s your answer.”

“Hmph.”

Gordon went back to the book he was reading. Not for long, however, as another question sprung to his mind. “Would you be proud of me if I drove trains?”

“Very. If you do that I’ll give you an A1. Your brother as well.”

The child’s eyes widened. “Oh my,” he gasped. “Really?”

“Someone has to drive it, right? I’ll keep the prototype safe, how about that.”

Gordon blushed with pride, nodding.

“Good lad.” And with that, Sir Nigel Gresley went back to his work.

Anyways, the Gresley family brainrot be hitting hard and now I have HOISNY related lore relating to Smoldon (Greendon) & smol Scotsman (feat. Great Northern).

This instead of thinking about the LBSCR lore & Thomas shenanigans.

Might work it into a HOISNY-based series of oneshots… Probably. Trust me the current thing I have is a wall of text that appeared to me in a dream and it works LMAO.
