JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Two former Mississippi deputies wept in court Wednesday as a federal judge sentenced them to years in prison and condemned their cruelty for breaking into a home with four other white officers and torturing two Black men.

U.S. District Judge Tom Lee sentenced Christian Dedmon, 29, to 40 years in prison and Daniel Opdyke, 28, to 17.5 years.

Lee said Dedmon carried out the most “shocking, brutal and cruel attacks imaginable” against the two Black men, Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker, and against a white man during a traffic stop weeks earlier.

Dedmon did not look at Jenkins and Parker as he apologized Wednesday, saying he’d never forgive himself for the pain he caused.

Jenkins, who has trouble speaking after being shot in the mouth during the January 2023 attack, said in a statement read by his lawyer that Dedmon’s actions were the most depraved of any of those who attacked him.

“Deputy Dedmon is the worst example of a police officer in the United States,” Jenkins’ lawyer read. “Deputy Dedmon was the most aggressive, sickest and the most wicked.”

On Tuesday, Lee sentenced 31-year-old Hunter Elward, who shot Jenkins, to nearly 20 years in prison and Jeffrey Middleton, 46, to 17.5 years. The judge called their actions “egregious and despicable.” They, like Opdyke and Dedmon, worked as Rankin County sheriff’s deputies during the attack. (source)

I hope to not be the only one who sees the following parallels.

Don’t you think the green boy (Ricky) In terms of personality:

Being bold and brash, yet helpful and the first kid to apologize and jump into action when he witness his friend needing help.

A kid who dismisses “childish” things:

And values “togetherness”

And has a desire/“dream” to grow up/being tall

So he could:

“Protect helpless creatures”

“Your assigned character is Mono! You are courageous and brave, always willing to protect your friends from harm!”

“Play with unhappy children”

“And rescue lost things”

(I have more parallels, but I can only attach 10 pictures)

Is conceptually very similar to Mono/Thin man?

Another feature that stands out, is Ricky wearing a brown hat.

Also:

The big grin resembling some of the early conceptual set of thin man’s character

Mono being hinted at having some regrets/trauma regarding watching his friend being harmed, kidnapped and not being able to do anything to help them:

“Ricky” wearing a brown hat and that being one of the main features of his character

Thus doesn’t mean they are the same characters. But I can see the similarities. Perhaps that kid was a conceptual version of Mono’s character.

i heard somewhere that the 2017 comics were meant to tease ln2 coming (but apparently got canned for being too vague), so i can easily believe they were foreshadowing a future character. even if mono and ricky are very separate characters in my canon they have some strong points in common for sure.

For Aj & Ashley. Aj is always the cook, Ashley can't cook to save her life, but she can bake. So she's always happy to clean up after dinner.

For Charlie & Sage. They love being spontaneous. Always having to keep an eye on the goofballs or their merry band of treasure hunters, they find moments of quiet for themselves in an otherwise chaotic time. So when they know they're going to have free time, it's not unlike them to disappear to another city, another country and see what takes their fancy.

For Rafe & Elizabeth. Two broken idiots wrapped up in their own issues. Rafe soon learns that Elizabeth isn't won by gold necklaces and diamond rings. But grabbing food and beer during a baseball game so she can watch the game uninterrupted. Fetching her things when it's the time of the month, but saying nothing about the reason why. Just bringing home chocolate or ice cream. Filling a hot water bottle. While he never got to experience these small acts of kindness, he learns for Elizabeth (with the help of Ashley).

This was an egregiously awful case, in which 6 police officers in Mississippi broke into a home without a warrant and tortured two black men while abusing them with racial slurs. The attack was completely unprovoked. One of the cops actively tried to dispose of evidence and cover up what they did, and they planted a gun on the victims to try to blame them. One was convicted for organizing a "goon squad", now implicated in 9 incidents of brutality in this county in a five-year period.

These people are getting steep prison sentences, 27 years, 20 years, 17 years, and such. One was ordered to pay nearly $80,000 to the victims, attend drug and alcohol treatment, and anger management therapy.

All of them have pled guilty.

There are still a ton of problems in our society but it is refreshing to see this small step in the direction of police accountability.

GOON SQUAD - Sentencing underway for 6 White cops who tortured 2 Black men in Mississippi

Sentencing began Tuesday for six White former Mississippi police officers who tortured two Black men last year after a complaint from a neighbor that the men were living with a White woman. The officers assaulted the men with stun guns, sex toys and liquids before forcing them to shower together. 

One of the officers then shot one of the victims in the mouth in a mock execution and planted evidence in an attempt to cover up the crimes. Former prosecutor Steve Baric joined CBS News to talk about the case.
