i don’t think we talk enough about how horrified thorin was that he would fall to gold sickness like his grandfather. (this is going to reference the extended editions of the movies specifically as i have not yet finished the book!)
we see him watching Thror. he’s witnessed firsthand as his grandfather, whom he was very close with, falls to addiction and madness because of the wealth he’s accumulated.
we see him searching for his father, saying that he knows he’s alive. i could honestly go on a whole other tangent about this, but for the sake of this rant, he wants to believe that his father didn’t actually go mad like everyone says he did. or if he has gone mad, he wants to believe he can help him.
there’s the scene in Rivendell where he overhears Lord Elrond and Gandalf talking about it, and i don’t know about you guys, but he looks pretty damn worried to me. (sorry for how crunchy this gif is but you get the point)

and of course there’s obviously the “I am not my grandfather.” line he says to Balin outside of Erebor, which is one of the lines that ends up snapping him out of the dragon/gold sickness. His voice is stern, but he also looks away from Balin and almost whispers the line (see below).
all of this only exaggerates the tragedy of when he falls to the sickness. not only do we see how it effects those around him, but when he starts to recognize what’s happened to him he imagines being swallowed up by the gold. when he snaps out of it (might i add, to the repeated line “I am not my grandfather”), it’s such an intense realization that he throws his crown. he’s not only betrayed the others by falling to this sickness, he’s betrayed himself.

anyways… thank you for coming to my ted talk ❤️

In my bagginshield era again. So obviously with that I watched the movies again. Let me tell you. It felt like I was watching a fanfic. It made so much sense if you watched it as Bilbo and Thorin falling in love. It also hurts a lot more when they reach the mountain in desolation of Smaug when Thorin points his sword to Bilbo. Just think that they either started courting or got married in Lake Town. You can feel the sheer heartbreak Bilbo goes through when he realizes Thorin is changing.

"“He would have done it without an obligation. He loves you more than anything. I have known Thorin all his life. He carried his burdens with dignity and honor. I thought he might go all his life not letting himself have anything or anyone to himself until we met you. From the moment he saw you, his heart chose you, but he is also self-sacrificing and has always been made to feel unworthy. A proud dwarf wrought low by circumstance. He held the lives of all of his people on his back, and it nearly shattered him. He has lived his entire life in fear of bearing the same fate as his grandfather. Just as he was on the precipice of having everything he worked for, that fear became a reality. Gold sickness twisted him into something he was not, and he lost you. He would give you the very sky if he thought it would make you happy, and he would hide himself away from you if he thought that kept you safe.”"

The Hobbit/ Lord of the Rings Masterlist
Tumblr media
Favorite snacks
Bilbo stays at Erebor and then shares a elevenses with his king
His hobbit
5 times Thorin doesn't speak his feelings for Bilbo +1 in which he does
Dreaming the Future
Beorn's cottage was peaceful, warm, and safe.
Thorin knew that the dwarves were enjoying the break from the orcs in the shape-shifter's house, and he was sure that Oin was grateful to be able to give Thorin and his wounds a proper rest before they had to continue their journey.
Of all the members of the Company, the one who seemed truly happy to be in Beorn's house was Bilbo.
My fondest memory
If someone had asked Bilbo Baggins what was his happiest memory of Bag End, Bilbo would have said the faces of his parents when they looked at each other in their smial, the loving smile of his mother and the devoted look of his father.
In his twenty years of life, nothing had been as special as the precious moments between his parents, their pure love that made him determined to find his soulmate in this world, the one their Valar, Yavanna, had gifted them.
And, their memories, had been Bilbo's happiness until he was fifty.
How to get the favor of a hobbit
“Just to be clear, hobbits are Lady Yavanna’s gift?” Bilbo asked, frowning.
“Exactly.” Ori nodded.
“And the gifts I’m receiving are because men, elves, and dwarves love hobbits?” Bilbo asked, tilting his head.
“Yes.” Ori confirmed.
Tales of the Shire
Our history is not about great kings, warriors. It doesn't involve amazing battles or even great heroes.
Our history has no great enemies or darkness, it does not speak of impossible undertakings and insurmountable quests, of bitter enemies or unlikely allies.
Our story, however, talks about the little things, the gestures of everyday life.
Our story is about the life of a small child, born in the North-West of Middle-earth, in Eriador, in the realm of Arnor.
Lady Yavanna's Gift
Thorin huffed. “Gifts. Dwarrows, Elves, and Men were created, as were the Ents, the Maiar, and other creatures of Middle-earth. Not hobbits. Lady Yavanna gifted hobbits to the Mortal Land.”
Gandalf nodded proudly. “Exactly my point, Thorin.”
Thorin bit into the sandwich before turning his gaze to Gandalf. “And you assure me this hobbit has agreed to join my company, Gandalf? Have you explained the dangers to him in the appropriate way?” Skeptical, Thorin added, “I can hardly believe there’s a hobbit who would willingly seek an adventure far from the comforts of the Shire.”
“This hobbit is very different, Thorin, I can assure you!” Gandalf smiled. “I’ve known him since birth, and there’s no one better suited for the role.”
The Hobbit rewrite with hobbits as everyone's favourite
We could have it all ~ who said we couldn’t
Thorin hasn't been himself for a while. Bilbo gets his confirmation when he sees how Thorin reacts to the arrival of the survivors from Lake Town and how he goes back on his word and honour.
Are you not hungry?
After the Battle of the Five Armies, Bilbo is helping the king. But he has some personal struggles.
Winners Take it all
Thorin is in a coma. Bilbo is involved in the negotiations with Thranduil, Dáin, and Bard.
sequel of: we could have it all ~ who said we couldn't
It’s a Matter of Hair
Hobbit hair is an extremely personal matter.
The elves know this and long to touch the soft curls of hobbit hair.
Yet, it is the dwarrows who are allowed to do so.
sequel of: Winners Take it all
Bilbo Baggins' guide: how to survive a dragon
How Bilbo Baggins finds himself with a dragon pet
Chance to meet you
Thorin doesn’t want to marry a hobbit. Bilbo doesn’t want to marry a dwarf. The two meet, talk, and then realise they’ve been insulting each other all evening.
It’s not an awkward first meeting at all. (Interestingly enough, they’ve both had worse.)
The things I never thought I would have done
Bilbo was a hobbit, a creature that had nothing to do with battles and crowns. And yet, when his eyes met Thorin’s, he saw something that made him push aside every hesitation. His decision might have seemed sudden to the dwarrows, senseless compared to his firm refusal the night before, but… that voice could only have been a gift from Lady Yavanna, a way to set Bilbo on the right path, the one his Valar had intended for him.
You make me a fool
Thorin knew he was pathetic.
He knew because Dwalin had told him, of course, but also because there was absolutely no reason for him to be this upset.

Okay, but like. What of Thorin survived and Bilbo and he lived together, and Thorin was able to help Bilbo shoulder a little more of the weight of the ring because of his own experience with dragon sickness and Bilbo never had to fear becoming a monster because Thorin would never let him, the same way Bilbo did everything he could to help Thorin, and in the end they were able to hand the ring over to Frodo themselves in person alongside Gandalf to give him the most support possible for his quest... I just think there's a lot of hurt/comfort right there just waiting to be mined (ba dum tss).
That being said, if anybody knows a fic like this... đź‘€

I was reading a fanfic about the battle of five armies and there was a sentence that nearly took me out?
Like... some of the older dwarrow where from Erebor. Just imagine that the dragon is gone, the orc army is not there yet and they find a relative/spouse somewhere? And they recognise the skeleton because of some trinket?
