The seventieth free, unedited chapter of my upcoming book, “The Heist at Cordia Aquarium” is now available on its website (or click here to read from the beginning).
I named this release “Stress Bonding” because rabbits. These little critters run my household to the brink of collapse. Daily.
I love them, though.
Thea doesn't notice Avery's attempt at escape. Tears well at the corners of her eyes and she sucks a glob of snot back up her nose. "I didn't want to go with them. I-I got washed up in it. Nothing else was working... and this is the only o-option I had left."
Avery could scream right now. Yell at the top of her lungs and try to draw someone within earshot, but something feels off. An air of despair oozes off the priest. Honest, pure despair that'd tempt the ear of any adventurer. Especially an adventurer that isn't able to make a break for it in the first place.
Flat against the floor, she glances at the priest out of the corner of her eyes. "Pretend I care: the only option for what?"
Tears streak down Thea's face and drip off her chin, where they disappear into the dark fabric of her cassock. She balls her hands up in her lap. "To keep it together. I just needed enough money to get my motorcycle fixed, then It'd've been fine. Nothing would've had to change..."
[...]
Same as last week: Theas concept art. I just think she’s neat.

do you have any good drawing references for nick?
he's a hard one! for poses and clothing, pinterest is a good reference. lots of old promotional pics of detectives in trench coats for movies and such. lots of old magazines from the 50s are on the internet archives, too. for the man himself, if i'm having a lot of trouble, the xps file is available online so i'll open that in blender and get a good look (though the addon used for xps files doesn't work on blender 4.0 onwards, so you'd need a slightly older version). i'd lean on referencing real photos way more than the model, if you can get away with it. there are anatomical discrepancies that are hard to bridge working 1:1 from them

- i walked to tesco while listening to Nights by Frank Ocean and i arrived there perfectly at the beat switch
- thom yorke came to my house with the new radiohead album and challenged me to walk across my garden in less than 20 seconds (extremely possible task in real life) or he'd take it away and i couldn't make it
- am i good enough friends with sufjan stevens to add him to a Discord server
- drake releases a song and everyone unanimously agrees it is the worst one ever made
- i'm in the room with the cross from the National Accident Helpline ad https://youtu.be/lXFbLMy9tjU
- i was in the playground near my house and had to rush home to do an listening party of Dangerous by Michael Jackson
- Nic Jones's Baby Einstein songs

- 100 gecs show at the soft play area i went to as a kid
- my parents bought a horse and it lived in the house with us and then it headbutted me into a wall from behind
- jason lytle vs deontay wilder world title fight
- I was walking down this street in Hastings and I saw Martin Kemp from Spandau Ballet collapsed on the path, covered in blood, after falling and hitting his head on a railing. Me and my family carried him home and as soon as we got him in he started vomiting everywhere which caused me to projectile vomit specifically on a pile of magazines in my bedroom. Everyone kept calling him Tony Hadley.

Thursday Live Preview: 1/30, Concord Music Hall, Chicago
Thursday at Riot Fest 2023
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Tonight at Concord Music Hall, New Jersey emo rockers Thursday perform their third album, War All The Time, in full. The 2003 record was their Island debut following a bumpy exit from Victory, and it was their first album to feature keyboardist Andrew Everding (who would become a full-time member and remain in the band for 15+ years). It was also a triumphant effort that emerged despite massive personal life changes for the band members--marriages, deaths--and writer's block. Stylistically, though it's certainly a post-hardcore album, it notably introduced the post-rock builds of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mogwai, and especially Sigur Rós, the last of whose live show directly contributed to the noisy backbone of "Division St." (Thursday would later pay tribute by covering "Ný batterí" for a bonus track on the Japanese version of War All The Time.) Most importantly, it stands the test of time: Geoff Rickly's anxieties about all-consuming capitalism ("For the Workforce, Drowning"), identity ("Signals Over the Air"), and the military industrial complex ("This Song Brought to You by a Falling Bomb") are political because they're personal, honest assessments both biographical and thoughtful.
Many of the songs on War All The Time have a consistent place in Thursday's setlists, from "Signals" to the twinkly, yet sharp title track, whose influence you can hear in bands forming just around that time like La Dispute. The band has also played the record in full before, but if you've never been to the album show and are curious how it may sound, Thursday did digitally release a performance of War All The Time in 2022. Listening to it, a couple things stand out. First, playing the album allows the band to revisit the second half of the album that they admittedly didn't appreciate as much at the time and haven't played a ton. You can hear the crowd relishing every moment, singing along to "Marches and Maneuvers", "Falling Bomb", and the title track. Second, the opportunity to play the record allows Rickly to re-contextualize the songs and share what they mean to him today. He dedicates "Division St." and the title track to New Jersey kids and those who have been there from the beginning, perhaps growing and changing along with the band itself. He explains "Signals Over the Air"--which I've seen him previously describe as about men beating up on women in mosh pits--as a song about feeling the need to perform based on society's expectations of you. Similar and touching is "M. Shepard", certainly based on Matthew Shepard, who was murdered for being gay, and which famously interpolates words from Shepard's father. Around the time the album came out, Rickly said it was about about a friend afraid to come out of the closet, but these days, Rickly decries Shepard's lack of agency: That he's merely a symbol of hate and hate crimes takes away from his life and, in Rickly's words, "what kind of person he [might have turned] into."
After playing War All The Time, Thursday should end the night with a few highlights from their discography. NYC post-hardcore legends Rival Schools and MANY EYES (the new band of former Every Time I Die singer Keith Buckley) open. Doors at 6:00 PM, show at 7. Tickets still available at time of publication.

𝐌𝐀𝐊𝐄 𝐀 𝐖𝐈𝐒𝐇 ☆彡 | 𝐌 - 𝐒𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐍𝐈𝐎𝐋𝐎
୨ৎ - 𝐒𝐲𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐬𝐢𝐬 | In which Matt has one wish for his birthday
୨ৎ — 𝐂𝐖. None!
♡︎- ℳ𝒾𝓂𝒾’𝓈 𝓃ℴ𝓉ℯ𝓈 - Happy birthday to my favourite boy in the whole entire world (short Drabble)
Matt’s nose glimmers with a soft glow of candle light, the warm hue glowing into his blue eyes as he nips at his bottom lip. Twenty one. It seemed fake, impossible that he had really grown up so damn fast. A gentle hand kneaded the back on his neck with affection, curling the hairs at the base of his neck around her finger as he let out a sigh. That also seemed fake, her.
“Make’ a wish, baby?” She spoke, Matt’s eyes flicking upward to hers. Beautiful. Hair’s framed her jaw so sweetly, a smile on her kissable lips as she tilted her head down at him with a nurturing expression. With a little shake of the head, Matt flicked his gaze back to the candle lit cake. Ice cream slowly melted off the sides, dribbling onto the cardboard underneath as he waited his wish out. “Think of something you really love, hm?” Something he really loved?
Matt slowly lifted his gaze, eyes sliding across the table, realizing all he could ever want was around him. Marylou cheesed at him from across the table, hand in hand with Matt’s father’s as the two gazed at their son with such pride. Nick had a lazy smile on his lips as he leaned back in his chair, Chris’s head resting on the eldest triplet’s shoulder, a smear of buttercream frosting on the tip of his nose from when he blew out the candles to his cake. Nick couldn’t help himself.
Then her, Matt tipped his jaw up and met eyes with her. Butterflies fluttered in his belly as she brought a hand to his cheek, cupping the right side of his jaw delicately, thumb circling the soft skin as she hummed ever so softly. “Make a wish.” She murmured, leaning down and placing a chaste kiss on his forehead before pulling away. And he did, a warm aroma of frosting and his girlfriend’s perfume engulfing his nostrils as he leaned forward.
Pursing his lips for a moment, just before Matt’s eyes lulled shut as he blew out a light stream of air. Woosh, fire flowed off into a gusts of smoke, a comforting burning smell flooding his nose as he felt his shoulders fall. Claps were shared around the table, bubbly praises as Matt felt his lips twitch. My wish. Heart heavy with warmth as he brought a hand to his chest, pressing his palm into the fabric of his T-shirt as he concealed emotions that were far too sad to show. “Good job, baby.” The girl chuckled, the sound a beautiful melody to Matt’s ears.
As Jimmy leaned an arm across the table, everyone’s voice taking over the couples ears as Matt threaded a hand through his brown locks sheepishly. He felt .. weird. Though the attention wasn’t necessarily on him, he could actually feel the warmth and presence of everyone’s love. For him. A gentle weight was placed on his shoulder as he looked up, her hand on the boy’s shoulder as she laughed, looking around and talking to his family.
The room was dark apart from a soft illumination of a tea candle that sat aside the cake, the same cake he mentioned months prior to the special day that was his. She remembered. “Hey,” snapping from his daze, the girl glimpsed at him with concern. “what’s wrong?” Baby.
Cooing lightly, a hand lifted to brush his hair back as he stood upright from his seat. “Nothing, nothing-I’m fine.” Matt breathed out, leaning into her touch as his eyes fluttered shut. The girl watched as his eyelashes fell against the skin of his cheeks, resting his head on her open hand as she got impossibly closer to the perfectly emotional triplet. He was hers. “Then why are you crying?” A lone tear trickled down from the corner of his eyes, the blue abyss’s glazed over with wetness as he allowed them to escape.
“I’m not.” He mumbles, sniffing as he brushed his knuckles across the wetness under his eye. Laughing softly, both hands cupped his cheeks in a gentle manner. “No?” The girl mused, Matt letting out a little laugh at her tone, sniffling, “M’just happy.” So fucking happy.
Humming, she pecked his nose once. “Why the tears then?” She murmured against the now pink skin, resting her forehead against his as the two gazed into each other’s eyes. Matt brought a hand to her neck, gripping the side gently as he rubbed the soft dewy skin with adoration. “Just’ feel lucky.” He uttered, seeing her eyes glitter with shyness as he leaned in, littering kisses and nips to the side of her neck. “So fuckin’ lucky.” Matt mumbled in between pecks, voice coming out hushed.

Last night I saw the Great Gatsby musical. Before I went, I reread the Great Gatsby book (for the first time since 11th grade!) to get a refresher on the source material and the original story. Having the book so fresh in my mind made seeing the musical really interesting, and now I am going to do something I never thought I'd do, which is post some lengthy meta about The Great Gatsby. If you haven't seen the musical, this post may still be interesting to read, but it does contain some mild spoilers, so I leave that up to you. If you also haven't read the book, godspeed lol.
There's a lot I could talk about here when it comes to the way the book was adapted for the stage. But there's one particular thing I want to zero in on in this post, and that's the "unreliable narrator" of it all.
In the book, Nick Carraway is our narrator. He's an unreliable narrator practically by default - the idea is that he's retelling events that occurred two years prior, from memory. But even knowing that Nick is probably not reporting all events and characters with complete accuracy, it's hard to know which parts exactly are wrong, or what might have happened in reality, because even though he's an unreliable narrator, he's still the only narrator and this is the only version of events we know. We're forced to take Nick as our surrogate and take him at his word. Until the musical.
(I wondered how the show was going to deal with the fact that the story of Great Gatsby is not only told by an unreliable narrator but also by an outside perspective - generally speaking the events of the Great Gatsby aren't happening to Nick, they're just kind of happening around him. Yet he's the voice of the story, so in that way he's central to it, and I was curious how they were going to balance that fact with the fact that Gatsby is functionally the main character.
I think they struck a really good balance in the end. Nick's beginning and ending lines, lifted verbatim from his book narration, frame him clearly as the anchor of the story - I think that's the best word for it; the audience jumps from scene to scene, many but not all of which contain Nick, but we know that Nick is always going to be where the action is, or that he will at least know about it. He may not be the main character, but he's an essential character. But I digress a little bit.)
The difference between the way the story is imparted to the audience in the book versus in the musical boils down to this: in the book, Nick "plays" every character, so all their dialogue and actions, their mannerisms and the way they're described and reported, it's all informed by the beliefs Nick holds about them. Whether he means to or not, his biases paint certain characters in certain lights, and because he is our eyes and ears to the story, we have no choice but to absorb those biases.
But in the musical, every character is literally played by a different actor. Nick can only speak for himself. Nick can only tell his own parts as they happened. He may be "telling" the story, but we're watching the story. We have the benefit of an unblemished perspective on things - we can watch the events the way they actually unfold, regardless of how Nick believes or remembers they went down.
This difference - between Nick as the narrator and Nick as merely his own voice - is crucial in how the musical develops each character, some of them fairly different from how Nick described them in the book. And there's one book-to-stage change - a fairly small one, all things considered - that, to me, illustrated this difference perfectly.
There's a line towards the end of the Gatsby book. Something Nick says in narration, after his final conversation with Tom Buchanan, talking about how Tom gave away Gatsby's name and location to George Wilson (which ultimately led to Gatsby's death). Nick writes:
"I couldn’t forgive him or like him, but I saw that what he had done was, to him, entirely justified. It was all very careless and confused. They were careless people, Tom and Daisy — they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made…"
When I read this line in the book, I couldn't help vehemently agreeing. Screw those rich assholes! Money does corrupt! Tom and Daisy ARE careless wealthy people! It was easy to side with Nick, not only because he was the only perspective on the situation that I had, but also because he said this in internal response to a conversation with Tom, who, I think we can all agree, is a major jackass and a deeply unsympathetic character.
But in the musical, this line is spoken aloud by Nick. And he says it to Daisy, in her house, as she's packing up to skip town after Gatsby's death. In fact, he doesn't just say it; he shouts it, visibly and audibly outraged at her audacity to lead Gatsby on, ghost him, skip his funeral, and then move away to avoid the fallout. Nick is angry and highly critical of Daisy. But because we're no longer confined to his shoes, we also get to see Daisy's reaction - not as Nick remembers it, but as Daisy actually reacts. And because of that, we're able to really see, and confirm, that "Daisy is rich and careless" is not the full story.
I have to credit Eva Noblezada for a phenomenal performance (duh). Daisy in this scene is emotional, grieving, and it's clear she has been trying to contain these feelings for the sake of her husband and her own sanity. She's remorseful, not that Gatsby is gone necessarily, but that she allowed herself to entertain the fantasy of running away with him, only for it to be torn from her. She is trying to make the best of her unavoidable reality. And then Nick tears her a new one, calling her careless, accusing her of destroying things and being too rich to care.
And as I watched that scene, I was no longer wholly on Nick's side. I understood that this situation was so much more complex than Nick's chastisement acknowledged. Sure, Daisy wasn't innocent, but she also wasn't the callous rich girl Nick made her out to be. She did love Gatsby. And she also had a whole life with Tom. She had a daughter. She was a woman in the 1920s! That's a kind of life sentence even wealth can't erase.
The way Daisy responded may not quite have landed with Nick (if we consider the kind of fun possibility that the musical is the events as they happened and the book is Nick retelling those events as he remembers them two years later, then clearly Nick's disdain for Daisy's actions overtook whatever sympathy he felt for her), but the musical gave Daisy the opportunity to appeal to us. The audience. Having this omniscient perspective of things allowed us to draw our own conclusions, and I found myself a lot more sympathetic towards Daisy when I could both see and hear how she responded to Nick's verbal castigation.
In the book, Nick is the narrator. In the musical, Nick is a narrator. But he's no longer the sole arbiter of the story. The audience got to make our own judgements on the events as we witnessed them. Every one of us was a Nick - beholden to our own biases, maybe, but at least not beholden to his.

A quick epilogue thanks to @caystar13star for this one reminds the other of the past
Rear Admiral Bishop slides in to the bar stool besides Admiral Johnson.
“Recognise some familiar faces today?”
Johnson laughs drily. “Kazansky, Kerner and Mitchell? Yeah.”
“They’ve all grown up. Mitchell looked like he’d been shot after the presentation. Did you see?”
He had, it’s the reason he was stewing over beer at the open bar of the hotel. If he were to hazard a guess, it had something to do with Dr Blackwood’s use of a highly confidential photograph.
He sighs. Nick Bradshaw was a good man and some of his last words to him were spent calling him an asshole.
“I did. You know what happened, everyone does. It seems Maverick wasn’t expecting it.”
Bishop hums, twisting a coaster around in circles.
“Seems a bit crass to use it. Besides the fact I thought all photographs from the incident were locked up until Kingdom come.”
“They are,” Admiral Johnson grits out. “How the hell she got the clearance to use them I don’t know. And the shit about human nature was uncalled for, no matter what grievances she’s held onto since teaching with Maverick.”
Just as Bishop goes to voice his agreement, the two Admirals see a pair of familiar faces darting out of the elevators and making a bee line to the front office. Collecting his beer, Bishoo tips his head and raises his glass.
“Godspeed to those three, something tells me they’ll need it.”

(sorry this was technically meant to go w yesterday's asks but I only got a chance to ink it just now... Th. God. Still haunted by the "the embodiment of your failure in the only role you could have" (approximation, couldn't remember exact) line you replied with. Thus!) (Also I didn't meant for the flash to catch Sunwish like that but c'est la vie. Vague gesture) (OH YEAH. Morningbloom coming down to lead Sunwish into the stars for clarity's sake.)
(ALSO. FORGOT. (CRYING WAILING CAT IMAGE) I DIDNT KNOW HAILCRASH WAS CLOSE WITH STORMSIGHT AND SUNWISH WERE CLOSE THATS SO SO CUTE... Oooogh. Well now I'm thinking about a ghostly Storm (OR Sun... ue ue ue...) coming to visit even though they can't be seen.. wails about it.) (also unrelated but struck by thought while typing. Do u think Stormsight was named for his connection w Starclan cause he saw a SC cat while he was an apprentice... Also gives me the image of him having been good at predicting storms which is just really cute to me. ANYWAY! Godspeed in your pursuits comrade)
(OH YEAH. DEFINITELY FORGOR EAGLE'S AGE IN THAT LAST ONE ALSO SORRY </3 for some reason I thought she was younger than she is. Woops!)

and YES you're so right with Stormsight's name... i always thought it was something like he was good at predicting the weather but he DID TOTALLY SEE GHOST NICK WHEN HE WAS AN APPRENTICE!!! now they are chilling up in starclan together. unreal
