Curse of the Stag's Eye - Glenn Quigley (part of the Haunted Hearts series)
Synopsis
High on a wave-dashed cliff, the ancient standing stone known as the Stag’s Eye jealously watches over a cursed lighthouse with a grisly past. Paranormal investigator Rhys has chosen this place to hold his first-ever ghost tour. Ghost-hunting veteran Dawn and her boyfriend Nikesh are eager to go exploring, while first-timer Gaz is hoping to learn more about the spirit world. He also intends to learn more about Rhys for various reasons, not all of which are entirely innocent.
The ghost of a murdered lighthouse keeper is said to climb the stairs every night, tending to the light, but other, far more sinister phantoms may lurk in the shadows. As the night wears on and the haunting becomes more and more hazardous, Rhys and Gaz grow closer. However, it soon becomes clear that not everyone on the tour is being honest about their reasons for being there. Can the supernatural activity be blamed on the curse of the Stag’s Eye or does someone know more than they’re letting on?
Curse of the Stag’s Eye is a part of the Haunted Hearts Series.
Haunted Hearts is an Own-Voices Paranormal Romance Series about love and the things go boo in the night. Join us on our romantic journeys over 10 books from some of your favorite authors! Everyone deserves the HEA!
My Thoughts
Anyone who knows me know that I’m obsessed with ghost hunting shows. I have seen just about all of them that are available on Discovery+. It came as no surprise to me that this book would appeal to that side of my interests, and I can honestly say that I was not at all disappointed.
There are some spooky tales associated with the Stag’s Head Lighthouse, but Gaz isn’t quite sure any of them are truly believable, no matter what his charming (and handsome!) tour guide Rhys says. Gaz is determined to prove Rhys a fraud, while Rhys just wants to have a good ghost tour, and have a good time.
There’s more to this whole experience than meets the eye, and learning the secrets of the Stag’s Head Lighthouse was a seat-gripping experience from beginning to end. Even as the mysteries surrounding the lighthouse unravelled, it was the relationships that were being built between Rhys, Gaz, Nikesh, and Dawn that really appealed to me.
Dawn really came into her own, and really stepped up to the plate when she needed to. I really enjoyed this about her greatly! She really grew on me throughout the book, and I really felt for her and her experience. And of course, she was instrumental (more like nosey and meddlesome) in the romance between Gaz and Rhys.
I love their instant attraction to each other. It wasn’t anything over the top or spectacular, but it was present, and I felt it came about naturally between them. Through the course of a very, very intense evening, they had their ups and downs in a short amount of time, but if they can overcome that, they can overcome just about anything, I think.
I really loved that this was such a good start to my spooky season reading! This was a fantastic book, and I can see this being an intro to an entire series. I’d love to see more of these characters, and their ghost hunts together!

Tom Selleck is an avid outdoorsman, marksman and firearms collector. These interests led him to leading-man cowboy roles in Western films, starting with his role as cowboy and frontier marshal Orrin Sackett in the 1979 film The Sacketts, opposite Sam Elliott, Jeff Osterhage, and Western legends Glenn Ford and Ben Johnson, and that same year, Concrete Cowboys with Jerry Reed. The Shadow Riders followed in 1982. Then Selleck shifted gears, portraying a cat burglar in 1930s London in Lassiter in 1984. Quigley Down Under is one of his best-known Western films, but it was for his 1997 role in Last Stand at Saber River that he won a "Western Heritage Award".

It’s time for this year’s JMS Books Top Ten Anthology, out now – and I’m thrilled to be part of it again! The 2023 anthology includes my short story “December Beginnings,” which is perfectly seasonal! It was also a very fun story to write – a little spin-off story for Matthew, Finn’s stunt double from the Finn & Wes seasonal stories, in which he gets his own (much deserved) happy ending.
Also I, er, might’ve dropped a character down a flight of stairs again in this one. Look, it’s not really a habit…only twice…oh, okay, if a cliff counts, maybe three times…
The collection is currently in the 20% off new release sale at JMS Books until January 5th!

July 2023 Reading Wrap Up
I've been pondering starting a bookish instagram, but in the likely event I never do, here are the monthly wrap up images I made for July 2023. (If it doesn't have a rating it just means it was too short or too . . . personal? to easily rate. I didn't track DNFs on these graphics, but I DNF'ed seven books.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
*sigh*
Of course, I wrote a bunch of stuff about the books here, but then tumblr ate my words. So, on the off chance you have a question about anything I read, let me know.
I might keep posting here, if no one minds and I find it easy enough to keep up with. I'm hoping to make the graphics a little less rough and ready in future.
Also, I will list the books for accessibility purposes.

'The Crimson Ghost' released on Oct 26, 1946.
The serial is divided into twelve chapters, and stars Charles Quigley as Professor Duncan Richards, a criminologist who attempts to thwart the efforts of the eponymous villain, the Crimson Ghost, to steal an invention that can render electrical devices powerless. The serial also stars Linda Stirling, Clayton Moore, and I. Stanford Jolley. In 1966 it was re-edited and re-released as a television film titled “Cyclotrode X". The serial's titular villain, the Crimson Ghost, has become somewhat of a pop culture icon due to the punk rock band Misfits having adapted his skull-like visage as part of their iconography. The Misfits first made use of the character's likeness in a flyer promoting one of their gigs on March 28, 1979 at Max's Kansas City, after vocalist Glenn Danzig and bassist Jerry Only came across a picture of the Crimson Ghost while searching for images to silkscreen on T-shirts. Heavy metal band Iron Maiden have also used the Crimson Ghost in their "The Number of the Beast" music video.

We Cry the Sea by Glenn Quigley
The Moth and Moon #3
1780 in a place and time that is on an alternate plane. There are islands and boats, and some similarities with clockwork devices, accepted marriages between non-binary couples and a whole lot more. It was a fictional, fantasy, fairytale feeling world filled with intriguing characters. Again, tis was a story of family, friends, community and more. Romance was abundant and communication healthy and wise. I am not sure this is the end of the series, but I wouldn’t mind returning to Merryapple in the future if the author were to decide to take us there. I would recommend reading this series in order although having not read book one I still thoroughly enjoyed book so much that I was eager to read book three.
 What I liked
* Robin: a gentle giant, somewhat damaged by his childhood, eager to find his father, in love with Edwin, important to the community though on a quest of his own most of this book.
* Edwin: a nice guy and Robin’s partner
* Duncan Hunger: Intriguing man, clockwork genius and carpenter, a bit of a romantic and an intriguing fellow
* Iris & Eva: a good partnership and soon to be parents
* George: owner of The Moth and Moon, historian, collector, storyteller
* Vince: half-brother of Robin, a bit of an enigma, might be interesting in a story of his own, more to him than what we have seen so far – I like the direction he is heading at the end of the story
* Being reminded that we all have preferences in the type we might be drawn to. I had not thought much about it but some of the thoughts of various characters in this story had me thinking about this.
* finding out what happened to Daisy…
* Going to the Pirate’s lair
* The fun fantasy fairytale feel of the story
* That couples were so open with their feelings and open sharing of them among others
* The way it made me feel…
 What I didn’t like:
* What Robin found out about his father…
* The people I was meant not to like
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more by this author? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and NineStar Press for the ARC – This is my honest review.

    BLURB
After the explosive events of The Lion Lies Waiting, life has returned to normal for burly fisherman Robin Shipp. That is until the innkeeper of the ancient Moth & Moon approaches him with a surprising proposal, and an unexpected arrival brings some shocking news that sends Robin on a perilous journey alone. While he’s away, his lover, Edwin, anxiously prepares for the birth of his first child with his friend, Iris. Her wife, Lady Eva, must travel to Blackrabbit Island for a showdown over the future of the family business. Meanwhile, Duncan nurses an injured man back to health but as the two grow close, the island’s new schoolmaster makes his amorous intentions clear. Robin’s search for answers to the questions that have haunted his entire life will take him away from everyone he knows, across a dangerous ocean, and into the very heart of a floating pirate stronghold. Pushed to his limits, Robin’s one last chance at finding the truth will cost him more than he ever imagined.

The Moth and the Moon & The Lions Lies Waiting by Glenn Quigley
- In the summer of 1780, on the tiny island of Merryapple, burly fisherman Robin Shipp lives a simple, quiet life in a bustling harbour town where most of the residents dislike him due to the actions of his father. With a hurricane approaching, he nonetheless convinces the villagers to take shelter in the one place big enough to hold them all—the ancient, labyrinthine tavern named the Moth & Moon. While trapped with his neighbours during the raging storm, Robin inadvertently confronts more than the weather, and the results could change everything.
- Winter, 1780, and the solstice is fast approaching. Four months after the events of The Moth and Moon, burly fisherman Robin Shipp is preparing for his first Midwinter festival with his lover, the handsome baker Edwin Farriner. But when a letter arrives begging for help, they must travel with their friend, Duncan, to Port Knot on sinister Blackrabbit Island for a final confrontation with Edwin’s mother. Also visiting the island are Lady Eva and her wife Iris, with a stunning proposition that could change Robin and Edwin’s lives forever. The snow-covered harbour town of Port Knot is a dangerous place. While there, Robin, Edwin, and Duncan explore the menacing rooftop settlement known as the Roost, mingle with high society in the magnificent splendour of Chase Manor, and uncover a violent conspiracy threatening the island’s entire way of life. Old rivalries will flare, shocking secrets will be revealed, and as Duncan’s scandalous past finally catches up with him, will it ultimately destroy them all? The men will be tested to their limits as they discover that on Blackrabbit Island, the lion lies waiting.
Review
Technically, these are historical fantasy, but there is a considerable amount of romance in both novels, and the third installment is on the way.
The male MCs in the series are in their 40′s and 50′s in age, large in girth, and work in everyman professions. In this world, m/m, f/f, and poly relationships are the norm, and the second novel contains an established f/f marriage that receives considerable attention (and not as a means to just move the m/m narratives along, either).
For those that like intrigue, and political dealings, there is a lot of that as well. The world-building contains just enough of 1700′s Cornwall area to keep the setting well grounded in the reality, while Quigley’s ability to add dashes of clockwork ingenuity and revolutionary espionage, make sure that this is not just your regular fishing village occasionally frequented by pirates.
As an MC, Robin is an adorable alternative to the typical man in romance. He’s nearly as wide as he is tall, less than graceful, warm, supportive of his friends, and loyal. For those that watched Black Sails, Edwin reminded me of the softer sides of Flint, and sense of daring-do is impressive for a man that makes his living by baking.
For those that crave a loving f/f read, Eva and Iris are a great blend of backbone and sweetness, absolutely enamored with one another, and able to carry a sizeable amount of the second novel with their involvement in the island’s affairs.
If you’re looking for a truly original bit of reading, definitely give these novels a try. They contain a bit of everything that draws readers to historical romances, without any of it coming across as old hat. They touch on the treatment of the poor by the rich, mental health issues, and the everyday struggles of living in an area where the weather can change everything, but they do so in a lose-angst manner that makes both novels comfortable reading for a relaxing weekend.

Book Review -The Moth and Moon by Glenn Quigley
Book Review -The Moth and Moon by Glenn Quigley
It’s hard to write a review that encapsulates how charming this book is.
Yes, there’s a love story, but that’s only part of what this tale explores.
The world building is excellent, especially as the entire first chapter sets the scene of a small town from centuries ago about to brave a horrendous storm. All characters are well realised. Most are eccentric. None are forgettable.
