24th July 1394 saw the death Alexander Stewart, 1st Earl of Buchan AKA the Wolf of Badenoch.
Alexander Stewart, the Earl of Buchan, earned several nicknames during his lifetime given his loathsome reputation for murder, violence and fire raising, Many knew him as the Wolf of Badenoch while others referred to him as the Celtic Atilla. It has been questioned whether he was indeed Scotland’s vilest man.
The Wolf died on this day in 1394 at Ruthven Castle near Kingussie with legend claiming that he met his maker after playing chess with the devil. The story is perhaps a fitting end for a man who honed his reputation with a series of rampages through the north of Scotland and his terrifying appetite for destruction of his enemies.
He set fire to the towns of Forres and Elgin, where the cathedral was torched and chaplains and canons burnt out of their homes. It is believed that Pluscarden Abbey was also lit by the Wolf as he fought back against the influence of the Bishop of Moray. The driver for much of his rage was his marriage to Euphemia I, Countess of Ross, who was unable to bear him a legitimate heir and the church refused to end the marriage. However, he reportedly had seven children with his mistress, Mairead nighean Eachann, with other accounts claiming the Wolf fathered up to 40 offspring with other women.
The Wolf was powered by a toxic combination of anger and power which was gifted to him by his father, King Robert II, who made his son the Earl of Buchan in 1382 and the Crown’s chief law officer in the north of Scotland. The Wolf’s territory stretched from Moray to the Pentland Firth - with much of its people to feel the full force of this “avarious and cruel” according to one historian.
In 1390, by which time the Earl was bedding down at his secluded island home of Lochindorb Castle, the Wolf’s touch paper was lit when the Bishop of Moray, Alexander Bur, refused to annul his marriage. He was later to excommunicate the Wolf. The Earl was “exasperated....to such a degree of fury” that he was reduced key parts of his territory to ash.
In the month of May 1390 he descended from his heights and burn the town of Forres, with the choir of the church and the manse of the archdeacon, the next month he burnt the town of Elgin, the church of St Giles, the hospital of Maison-Dieu and the cathedral, with 18 homes of the canons and chaplains in the college of Elgin.
It is likely that the Priory of Pluscarden was burned at the same time with traces of fire lit still seen today in the building .
The Wolf, whose other homes included Drumin Castle near Glenlivet, Castle Garth near Glen Lyon, and Ruthven Castle near Kingussie, was prosecuted and punished by his father but ultimately absolved of his crimes and received back by the church.
According to accounts, Pope Clement V subsequently annulled the marriage in late 1392 after Countess Euphemia complained to Rome that her marriage was meaningless given the Wolf was cohabiting with another woman.
And so to this fateful day in history...or legend, you decide!
It is said he was visited by a tall man dressed in black and the pair played through the night, with a storm conjured when the visitor called “check” and “checkmate”.
In the morning, the Wolf was found dead in the banqueting hall and his men too found lifeless outside the castle walls.
Like all good legends there are differing versions of the story, the other was that the end “duel” was playing cards.

Lacy J. Dalton Releases Inspirational Song, “Summerland”
Singer-songwriter and outlaw original, Lacy J. Dalton, has finally recorded one of her most personal and poignant songs, “Summerland,” which is available today on all major streaming services in association with StarVista Music. Originally written for Dalton’s mother to bring her comfort as she was dying, the track carries an emotional and inspirational message, brimming with her trademark grit and a stirring mandolin solo. Although Lacy has performed the song for more than 17 years, she has never released it until now. M Music & Musicians Magazine premiered the song earlier today, and fans can now stream “Summerland” HERE. “I wrote this song for my mother when she was dying so she wouldn’t be afraid,” Lacy reveals, “and I got to sing it to her before she passed and again at her memorial. Since then it has helped a number of people. Most recently we had a friend who was passing and she listened to it every day until she died, and it gave her comfort.” Dalton signed with CBS Records in 1979 as an outlaw country artist. She hit the Top 20 that year with “Crazy Blue Eyes” and amassed a total of 16 Top 20 songs. More recently, she released the single “Devil By A Different Name,” addressing the many issues going on in the world and reminding us that we aren’t all that different. Lacy J. Dalton recently celebrated the 40th Anniversary of her hit signature single “16th Avenue.” Written by Thom Schuyler (Dalton, Kenny Rogers, Michael Martin Murphy), the lyrics, “God bless the boys who make the noise on 16th Avenue,” gave musical dreamers from around the world a true understanding of the music industry by showing them the significance of Nashville’s Music Row and that is where dreams could come true. Although things are different today, Lacy J. Dalton’s “16th Avenue” continues to offer hope to every songwriter or entertainer who has a dream of being heard and a place to go to chase it! Her most recent recorded work is the four-song EP ‘Scarecrow’ which is now available on all streaming music sites, and her single, “Devil By A Different Name.” In November, her very first studio recording, “The Jill Croston Album,” was made available for streaming for the first time since it was originally released in 1978. On August 9, 2022 Paul left his life on earth and entered into his eternal home where he met his Lord and Savior.
On February 14, 1931 Paul was born to Walter and Arlie (Dulmes) Veenendaal in Sheboygan Falls where he grew up going to the First Reformed Church with his family and as a member he sang in the choir and was a co-treasurer of the Sunday School.
He attended the Sheboygan Falls Public Schools and graduated with the Class of 1949. He then went to Sheboygan Business College and in May 1950 was employed by the Mailing Department of the Kohler Company until September 1951 when he was enrolled at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC.
On November 4, 1952, he was drafted into the United States Army and was sent to Fort Campbell, KY. After 16 weeks of basic training with the 11th Airborne Division, he was assigned to the Adjutant General Corps and was deployed to Pusan, Korea where he worked in the Post Office. After 18 months, he returned to the United States and enrolled in Mission House College (Lakeland) and on May 27, 1956 he received an Associate Degree in Applied Science in Business Administration. He accepted employment in the Accounting Department of Schultz Sav-O Stores (Piggly Wiggly) in Sheboygan. He formed their Credit Union and served as the first treasurer in addition to his regular accounting responsibilities.
After 24 years, his time there ended and he became a Teachers Aid in the Sheboygan Public School STRIVE Program which assists students with dysfunctional problems. After 2 years, he resigned and was employed for several years making floral deliveries for Caan’s Floral. In the past, he was a counselor at the Friendship House, a Big Brother, and in the prison ministry at the Kettle Moraine Correctional Institution.
In 1969, he transferred from the First Reformed Church in Sheboygan Falls to Bethany Reformed Church in Sheboygan where he taught Sunday School and served as a deacon. When his term as an elder ended, he joined the fellowship of the Evangelical Free Church in Sheboygan where he taught a Sunday School class for children. In 1993, he joined the congregation of City Church and served as an usher for several years.
Paul was married to Nancy Veenendaal from 1968-1993. From this union came his son, Mark. He also adopted Nancy’s daughter Barbara as his own. When his children were younger, he enjoyed taking his family to resorts in Eagle River and camping in local campgrounds. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching games on TV with his pet cat Molly in his home. He had an extensive collection of photographs and helmets autographed by the Green Bay Packers.
What people most remembered about Paul was that he was witty, enjoyed wholesome humor, had a notable memory, and had a desire to read and hear about Bible prophesy.
Paul is survived by his daughter, Barbara (Todd) Anderson of Monument, CO, and his son, Mark (Jennifer) of Sun Prairie, WI, six grandchildren, Ariana (Derek) Buehner, Claire, Katelyn and Noah Anderson of Monument, CO, and Rayna and Kaden Veenendaal of Sun Prairie, WI. On Writing Jake Seresin
I don’t want to step on any toes but for the love of all that is good in this world, people from Austin, TX are not country. Austin is an overcrowded metropolis. It isn’t respected or well-liked by most of Texas or its surrounding states--frankly, most hate everything it’s become in the last thirty years.
If you want to headcanon Jake as a country boy (which is also not automatically a cowboy) that’s fine, but it’d be my strong recommendation to make sure he’s not a born and raised Austinite in your fic if you’re going to do that. Maybe he’s actually from somewhere like Florence, Elgin, or Marble Falls, but then moved to Austin when he was a little older.
I absolutely love that Southern boys are finally getting the love they deserve, but even Texas in and of itself has completely different cultures of what that looks like within the state. Texans don’t automatically have a clue about things like western wear, guns, or how to ride a horse.
TL/DR: Writing Jake as a cowboy or country boy from Austin’s as believable as writing him as a cowboy or country boy from Los Angeles.
A guy from Austin is likely to be the polar opposite of a guy from a town like Seymour. A guy from Flower Mound is going to be different than a guy from Lubbock even though they’d get along. Texarkana? Totally different than Austin. Never get in the car with a Houstonite if you wouldn’t get in the car with Kyle Busch.
Even geographically, the differences are drastic. West Texas is...dry.
Austin and DFW (Dallas/Fort Worth)are giant conglomerations of poorly-defined concrete and cookie-cutter houses and lawns shoved together in the suburbs. Surrounding farm and ranch land has been swallowed up by houses and corporate developers, and it’s deeply depressing to watch those families who’ve been there forever living on their land trying to load cattle while ignorant drivers speed by. These areas of Texas were likely quite beautiful at one time, but now, you can’t even see the land.
Hill Country is beautiful.
East Texas is beautiful (though kind of swampy in some spots).
Rural Texas is where you’re going to get that quintessential “Texas” culture that the more urban areas piggyback off of at a very surface level. To their credit, some do genuinely get it. They’re just overrun by others who don’t.
I grew up in the country. My parents still live in the country. I still don’t consider myself country. I grew up with country boys and cowboys and even went to a cowboy church. I have a lot of family in Texas, and I have family in Austin specifically. They will tell you the same thing about all of the above.
I’m also not throwing city or suburban Texas boys--including Glen Powell--under the bus. Lord knows a few longtime followers here would laugh me out of the room on that one.
I don’t write all of this to be rude or crass, but I hope more will take it all into consideration when posting headcanons or writing fics.
