Angel #8
Tumblr media
The 10th installment of the Buffy and Angel crossover event, Hellmouth, Angel #8 is the search for Winifred Burkle. Wolfram and Hart have taken her to Baphomet in order to turn her to their side. But its up to Spike and Gunn to bring her back. With Angel still inside the Hellmouth, Our two heroes are the only thing left to protect Los Angeles. And if they are too late, Fred may become something far more sinister than they could have imagined.
Tumblr media
Angel #8 Angel has quickly become my favorite of the Whedonverse reboots by Boom Studios. Melnikov's art is always really good. I saw on twitter his desire to make Spike even more punk rock with generic punk band shirts. This issue he sports a Taking Back Sunnydale shirt. I like how Hill is developing Spike, who was my favorite character from the TV show. I also really like his take on Gunn, who I didn't really care for that much in the show. His story is really compelling. It looks like we will not get another Angel issue until February, after the Hellmouth event is over. Superman: Man of Tomorrow #11 Review
Tumblr media
A new storyline begins. Creative Staff: Story: Robert Venditti Art: Gleb Melnikov Colors: Jordie Bellaire Letterer: Clayton Cowles What They Say: A powerful warrior from space arrives to Earth with the sole purpose of fighting the Man of Steel himself. Can Superman defeat Grikus, the champion of 10,000 battles? Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers): The Superman series has been pretty solid overall since it got underway with a storyline that went over several issues before giving us a bit more variety with shorter stories and pairings. With this issue, it's brought back Robert Venditti to tell the tale and it finishes out with a tease of the next part, which has me excited as Venditti's take on Superman is pretty damn solid to me. This issue has Gleb Melnikov handling the art duties and it hs a really great classic kind of look with the chiseled face and slightly more angular in all the right ways. There's a good sense of power to the character and his opponent and with Bellaire's softer palette used here that avoids going too vibrant, it has a really neat naturalistic aspect to it that really works well. Venditti continues his bit at the start where Lois is frustrated by how many suits Clark goes through while trying to maintain the household budget. That happens because their downtime at work takes a hit as a spaceship has arrived and Clark runs into Jimmy on the way out and spills his burrito on him. Read the full article

Angel #7
Angel is still trapped in the Hellmouth in Angel #7. So it is up to Gunn and Spike to find Fred. But they are going to need some help from a certain musical demon. If Lilith can stop them from arguing long enough to seek out the help they need. Plus Fred's kidnappers are starting to get inside her head. If they can convince her that Angel is not her ally, she may turn against her new friends. And with no help from Angel, the others must work fast.
Tumblr media
Angel #7 I love this series so far. Melnikov's art is perfect for the characters and settings. He's not trying to duplicate the actors who played the parts from the show onto the page. Although there are a couple of panels of one of the new characters that is spot on with the actor. I'll let you see for yourself on that one if you pick the issue up. Hill is killing it with this story. And this is even with his main character off fighting in the Buffy and Hellmouth issues. I'm already finding a new love for the characters from a series I loved on television. If you like horror books or vampire stories, this is a must read series. Even if you have no idea what the Buffyverse is all about.

Angel #5
Tumblr media
Angel is busy in Sunnydale trying to close the Hellmouth in Angel #5. But Gunn and Fred are still in Los Angeles with a mission of their own. Gunn gets formally introduced to Lilith. She has a special mission for the two of them involving none other than Spike. He's now in Los Angeles after Drusilla stabbed him in Sunnydale to open the Hellmouth. Bryan Edward Hill and Gleb Melnikov are my current dynamic duo in comics. As far as the Buffyverse, Angel has become my favorite of the two series. Which is the opposite of when the show was running. If you're not familiar with the show, don't worry. You can jump in on this comic series and not be lost. The characters are re-imagined in the modern world. There may be some references you miss but I don't think anything will leave you scratching your head. Spoilers ahead so turn back if you're planning to pick up this issue.
Tumblr media
Credits Writer: Bryan Edward Hill Artist: Gleb Melnikov Colors: Roman Titov Letters: Ed Dukeshire Angel #5 Spike is in L.A. after Drusilla's betrayal. It seemed pretty minor to me since he can't be killed from a simple stab wound. But he's pretty broken up about it. Spike was by far my favorite character in the show so I'm super interested in how he's going to be developed it these two series. Gunn meets Fred and Lilith. Lilith explains that she can help Gunn find the vampire that killed his cousin. But first he has to find Spike. They all head to a night club where Spike is wallowing in self-pity. But they are not the only ones looking for him. Some worshipers of Baphomet attempt to sacrifice Spike to their lord. But Gunn steps in and puts a stop to it. Knowing that Gunn may not be a friendly face, Spike makes a run for it. But Lilith and Gunn stop him before he gets too far. Unfortunately though, the Baphomet worshipers capture Fred in the confusion.

Angel #5
Tumblr media
Angel catches up to Gunn in Angel #5. Gunn has been live-streaming inspirational speeches before he goes out to hunt the things that lurk in the darkness in LA. But given what Gunn has been through, it may be hard for him to accept Angel. A monster hunter choosing to work with a monster (even former monster) could be a hard sell. But Lilith believes he can help Angel save the world. I absolutely love what Hill and Melnikov have going here. The new take on the characters is very refreshing. It's not trying to be the show with modern improvements. This series is it's own thing, and it is extremely good. Melnikov's are is amazing. I would encourage any fans of sci-fi/horror to pick this series up. Even if you never saw the show.
Tumblr media
Credits Writer: Bryan Edward Hill Artist: Gleb Melnikov Colors: Roman Titov Letters: Ed Dukeshire Angel #5 We start with Gunn doing his live-stream speech before heading out hunting. The backstory is set up nicely. He and his friend were attacked by a vampire named Lukas when they were little. Gunn's friend was killed but he got away. He has been hunting Lukas ever since in LA. Angel shows up as Gunn is fighting several Vampires. He quickly takes out all three, hoping this will convince Gunn that he is one of the good guys before he reveals he is a vampire. Gunn makes no bad judgments and agrees to let Angel buy him a burger. He later accepts Angels offer to work with him and Fred as Angel goes to Sunnydale to help stop the Hellmouth from opening. Angel #4
Tumblr media
Angel has been sent to the realm of the demon that attacked Fred in this month's Angel #4. This demon has preyed on people vanity for centuries. And he is now using social media to possess his victims. But Angel, Fred and Lilith have a plan to stop him by fighting on his own turf. I'm still not 100% sure why Lilith is helping Angel but its a good mystery that the series has going for it. If you were ever a fan of the Buffyverse, you should jump on these books. Also, an old favorite character arrives in this issue. Credits and Thoughts Bryan Edward Hill continues on this series reboot. I have thoroughly enjoyed his take on Angel so far. There is plenty of mystery to keep you on your toes and the characters are not just copied and pasted from the tv series. Gleb Melnikov illustrates this issue with Roman Titov coloring. Character design and atmosphere capture the story very well. I like that the art is a new take on the characters as well. Gleb is not just trying to draw David Boreanaz. He's created his own Angel. You can absolutely grab this book if you are new, and it has a fresh feel if you are a long time fan.
Tumblr media
Angel #4 - *SPOILERS* Angel is in the demons realm as he tries to destroy him. But his powerful illusions are almost too much for him to take. Back on Earth, Lilith frees Fred's mind from her madness. Now that Fred's mind is clear, she reaches out to Angel as he is shown many of his past failures. He also is shown a future event involving what appears to be Buffy. Fred coaches Angel to find out the demon's name. Once he realizes the illusions can't really hurt him, he tricks the demon into telling him his name, Amarkax. Using magic, not something Angel really enjoys doing, he binds Amarkax to his realm of sorrow. With Amarkax unable to effect the living anymore, Angel travels back to his place and Fred. Fred fills him in on what is to come. Fred being the sorceress, they now have to find the warrior, the watcher and the slayer. Its a safe bet to say the slayer is Buffy and the Watcher could be Giles. But the warrior is who they have to find next, and it is Gunn. But they have to find him fast because the Source of all Darkness is hunting them all.
