If that sounds dangerous to you, that’s because it is — and eye doctors are desperate to get the message across to the many blue- and green-eyed hopefuls who are being bamboozled by purported success stories online.
Eye color change procedures, none of which are FDA-approved, carry with them risks that include severe light sensitivity, glaucoma, cataracts, corneal disease, vision loss and blindness. Side effects may manifest shortly after a procedure or take years to develop. In many cases, people become depressed as they navigate these consequences, eye doctors told USA TODAY.
One clinic in New York City is driving much of the social media chatter on permanent eye color change, garnering millions of views per TikTok. Run by ophthalmologist Dr. Alexander Movshovich, KERATO is the first keratopigmentation practice in the U.S. that uses special lasers to insert pigments inside a healthy cornea to cover the eye’s natural color, which lies in the iris. The procedure costs $12,000 and is not covered by insurance.
But the risks and cost doesn't deter some people.
Just before the new year, actor and model Jessica White revealed on Instagram that she permanently changed her eye color with KERATO from dark brown to hazel. In 2014, reality TV star Tameka “Tiny” Harris said she went to Africa to change her eye color with iris implants: the riskiest procedure of them all, ophthalmologists say.
What is an iris implant and is it safe?
During iris implant surgery, a doctor cuts a slit in the cornea and slides a folded, artificial iris made of silicone into it, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology. The fake iris is then unfolded to cover the natural one. This surgery is illegal in the U.S., so many people get it in other countries. Some experts consider the surgery “malpractice.”
Dr. Guillermo Amescua, a cornea specialist at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute within the University of Miami Health System, said he has treated several patients who have experienced serious complications from iris implants and have had to get them removed: an additional surgery that could further damage the eye.
One patient of his is now partially blind; another developed glaucoma — nerve damage that causes vision loss and blindness — so severe they had to get a cornea transplant.
The resulting mental health effects can be brutal. "When people get their implants, they're super happy and experience a boost in self-esteem," Amescua said. "When they start getting complications, however, they go into denial and then get really bad depression when their implants are removed."

One thing that I love about Eris Morn is that they included the mannerisms of someone who can see, but has ocular/visual disabilities.
I don’t know if anyone else has noticed this, but as a person with visual impairments, I noticed that she leads with her ears when looking at someone who is talking. I tend to do this too. I can see okay most days, but I’ll still hear you before I can focus on you visually.
It also seems like she has light sensitivity (she has eyes taken from cave people and implanted by space magic so, understandable). I’ve noticed that whenever there’s something bright, she holds her arm up to block it and looks at whatever she’s looking at carefully. This is… relatable. I have sensitivity to light from multiple uveitis flares and glaucoma. My pupils are irregularly shaped from it, so depending on the inflammation, bright lights can range from annoyance to pain. I cannot see anything outside during the day, even if it’s cloudy, without sunglasses or something to cover my eyes.
There are other things too, the hood probably helps with auditory overstimulation, the trauma of being awake during eye surgery (even though she did hers herself 😩), etc.
It’s hard to explain how you can see okay in general, but it may take time to process the thing you’re seeing. Like I can see to drive and can comprehend the other cars around me, but I have difficulty parsing what signs say at high speed sometimes so I’ll have to have the GPS on to hear when my exit is coming up. I tend to buy books multiple times to have an audio copy, an ebook copy and a print copy. Sometimes I struggle reading print because of the white background.
I have to limit my time playing games because the bright backlight makes my eyes strain easily. I really struggle in the ascendant plane because it’s all dark and uh more dark and very, very difficult for me to see. It’s better than it was, but still.
Anyway, it’s the last day of disability pride month and I just wanted to share that. All of these are reasons I want to cosplay her, tbh.

I have this! Im not sure if it is genetic or acquired through (surgical) trauma though. I had multiple eye surgeries before I was 1 year old... cataract removal as well as drainage tube implants due to developing glaucoma as a complication from cataract removal. I have had subsequent followup surgeries as well. You can even see the scar tissue in the corners of my eyes!
As for my vision, it is not great. I have no lenses in my eyes so i must wear strong bifocal glasses. Sadly, I am not a candidate for intraocular implants: my surgeon feels the risks for more serious vision loss are too high.
I also experience light sensitivity, tunnel vision, difficulty focusing, poor depth perception and double vision that gets worse if I'm tired. My right eye's vision is noticeably darker and has a smaller FOV.
One other cool thing is that the drain tubes were expected to only last a decade before failing, after which I would be old enough to manage my glaucoma myself with medication. But they never failed! I still have them 24 years later to the amazement of every opthalmologist I meet.

Sight: New technology to restore vision
Estimates show that over 43 million people were blind in 2021. Over 293 million people suffer from partial blindness.
So an exciting new discovery that could help restore vision is welcome.
There are many reasons for blindness. Cataracts, diabetic retinopathy glaucoma.
Another reason for blindness is a development of opaqueness in the cornea.
Caused by eye infections, injuries, vitamin deficiencies, among other reasons, the cornea becomes damaged or scarred, which prevents light from passing through the eye.
This can lead to blurred vision, eye redness, and excessive tearing.
A steady supply of stem cells within the eye maintains the cornea. The cells auto divide to supply the cells required to restore and repair the cornea.
This process is known as asymetric division, in which the cells can divide with being replenished.
Occasionally, because of genetic or autoimmune conditions, this supply can stop, resulting in the cornea turning opaque.
Scientists in Osaka University in Japan performed a corneal transplant including stem cells into patients with damaged cornea.
To do so they first created a thin sheet of cornea, shaped like cobblestones which were then transplanted onto the patient.
Two years after the surgery, the patients had restored vision with little to no side effects.
It is still not clear if vision was restored because they scraped the old cornea away or because of the new cornea implanted. Regardless, restoration of vision was a magical boon to the patient.
