My hair does get so crazy long overnight, Melissa Monroe thought to herself, but weekends I don’t care. Sitting on the edge of her bed, stroking her cat, she was checking the “likes” on her newest post and feeling the twinges that came with new followers, like starlight twinkles under her skin. So many of them out there now that like it big, she mused, smiling, almost giggling to herself. She’d been out shopping earlier that Saturday, something she’d needed to do more and more frequently these days. Gonna have to ask for a raise just to afford new jeans haha, she thought, and bras! Though I’m excited about this new Polish thing Abby’s hooked me up with…
——————————
The balloons have wilted, the whole thing really collapsed into nothing overnight, Dr J thought to himself, running his hand through what he felt was thinning hair, gazing woefully down at the surprisingly small pile of deflated, intertwined balloons at his feet, alongside the mattress on which he sat. The sculpture, the huge, pneumatic Melissa-Mother, had been so impressive; now it was a tiny, convoluted mess. Looking at it, I know how it feels, he thought, Why do I feel so...meager? I’m losing weight. My shoes...my pants...nothing fits…
He looked down at his thin, pale hands...
——————
My hands, Melissa marveled, regarding them herself as she sat on her bed, look at them. Even her hands, she thought, had been growing stronger, healthier, more able. Her nails were perfect, unbreakable. She hadn’t had a hangnail in a month. “Even the little scratches you gave me last year,” she said down to the tabby curled at her side as she looked at the back of her left hand, across which a pair of fine, white lines once stretched, “The scars are all gone, too.” Weird.
She flexed her long, elegant fingers, stretching them out, turning her palm upwards, then making a fist. Strong. Could I do an apple like that big Russian blonde girl did at Evolution? she thought, I bet I could. And what I did at gym this morning? Craaaazy...I can feel it. Like my body’s getting ready for Monday, these new changes, new challenges.
new girls coming on…
—————
The new girls, he thought in distress, having picked up the pile of spent rubber from his feet, absentmindedly holding it to his chest as if looking for comfort, they start on Monday. He held the balloons up to his face, drew a deep, faltered breath. The perfume was fading, too. What am I going to do??? There’s going to be so many of them.
He picked up his phone...
———
So excited for the new girls, she thought, as she drifted into her bathroom, towards the bathroom scale, They feel like sisters already. Leading this business is so thrilling, we’re gonna grow so big…! #girlstakeover #queenbee
——-
He knows he shouldn’t have brought this scale up from downstairs. I have to stop weighing myself, he thought, it just makes me feel awful
—-
Two more pounds, she thought, groaning aloud. Nnnngh wanna break this scale.

Weekly Roundup October 8 to 14
On October 11th we celebrated the International Day of the Girl!
“The Obama Foundation launched the Global Girls Alliance—a program which seeks to empower adolescent girls around the world through education, allowing them to achieve their full potential and to transform their families, communities, and countries. Join the alliance—because the future of our world is only as bright as our girls.”
Take action to help adolescent girls and the grassroots leaders working to educate them.

In her footsteps: The Day of the Girl
The 1.1 billion girls of today’s world are challenging the status quo. They’re redefining girlhood, and they’re doing so against the odds.
She persists.
She succeeds.
She advocates.
She inspires.
Recruited but not ‘child soldiers’: Returning girls in South Sudan risk being left without support
“Girls associated with armed groups in South Sudan risk missing out on vital reintegration assistance as they are either unaware of available support or are overlooked as they don’t fit the profile of a ‘child soldier’. More than 19,000 child soldiers have been recruited since 2013 and while the total number of girls is unclear, of 934 children officially released in 2018, almost 30% were girls.”
“However, in collaboration with UNICEF, Child Soldiers International has learnt that girls in some areas, especially those leaving groups independently, risk not benefiting from reintegration support, simply because they are not known or considered as potential beneficiaries.”
In Pakistan, Women Combat Gender Violence through Art
“In Pakistan, a series of vibrant murals has gone viral, inciting discussion, online and in city streets, about gender-based violence and discrimination. Young women artists changed the landscape of the country’s largest cities as they worked with communities to turn local people’s stories into art that claims public spaces for messages of tolerance and peace.”

DNA Detectives Bust Ivory Cartels — With Dung
"[A]n emerging partnership working to expose these bad actors has coalesced around an extensive elephant-DNA database, which is turning huge stockpiles of seized ivory into mountains of evidence. And that, in turn, is helping identify the ivory cartels, which could help prosecute their kingpins.”
“The primary players in this white-hat-wearing coalition are an International team of biologists and researchers; a division of US Homeland Security officials; and law-enforcement officers throughout Africa. And a key component in their effort to unmask the villains is dung.”
PRESS STATEMENT ON IWT LONDON CONFERENCE October 11-12, 2018
“Save the Elephants hopes that 2018’s London Conference will inspire governments to:
- recognize the significance of illegal wildlife trade; - strengthen laws around wildlife trafficking; and - establish vetted, multi-agency task forces that have the mandate and capacity to tackle high level traffickers.
We also hope that the UK government will provide significant financial and technical support to these initiatives.”

Elephant Holograms Charge On London
“Our friends at World Wildlife Fund (WWF) commissioned the gargantuan hologram that has been wandering the streets of London and pleasantly surprising tourists and locals alike. But the hologram isn't just about fun and games (and optimum selfie opportunities), it's a strategic installation meant to raise awareness about the plight of the African Elephant leading up to a crucial conference taking place in London later this month.”
WWF is encouraging everyone to sign its petition to end the illegal trade in wildlife.

The Illegal Wildlife Trade conference highlights the economic benefits of conservation
“Our findings argue that by promoting wildlife economies and pursuing conservation-driven development models, southern African governments can protect their citizens, derive revenue from wildlife products, and establish world class tourism products.”
IWT conference 2018: new funding for counter-poaching training in Africa
“A new programme to train African park rangers in safer counter-poaching techniques has been announced today.”
Declaration: London Conference on the Illegal Wildlife Trade 2018
Check out the actions and commitments from the 2018 London Conference on the Illegal Wildlife Trade HERE
“We welcome positive action taken by Governments, the United Nations, conferences of parties to international agreements, the private sector and non-governmental actors to combat the illegal wildlife trade. These actions have been taken within countries and across national borders to implement their various obligations and commitments. We confirm our intention to build upon the successes already achieved and to this end we commit ourselves to enhance our individual and collective efforts to meet our existing commitments.”

. As todays is International Day of The Girl., I want to use this opportunity to celebrate @kailend for their "INVESTING IN GIRLS" project (sponsoring girls education). Investments in secondary school education for girls yield especially high dividends. As the saying goes "if you educate a man, you educate an individual but if you educate a woman, you educate a nation". The future is female. Put more girls in school 👧👑👸 #sdg4 #girlscount #kailend @unfpa #IDG2017 #letgirlslead #girlstakeover #letgirlsdecide #letgirlslearn #letgirlsthrive #girlsday #girls #girlboss #wednesdaywisdom #educategirls

October 11 marks International Day of the Girl. This day aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face while promoting girls' empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights. This year’s theme is “Girls’ Progress = Goals’ Progress: A Global Girl Data Movement", because, as the United Nations writes, we need more numbers to help more girls.

HELSINKI: Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin faced a quieter day than usual on Wednesday after handing power to a 16-year-old as part of a campaign to promote girls’ rights.
Aava Murto, from Vaasky in southern Finland, said she was having an “exciting day” as she faced media on the steps of parliament after meeting with the chancellor of justice.
Aava Murto spoke about girls and technology.
On October 7th Prime Minister @MarinSanna‘s seat was occupied by 16-year-old Murto for one day, as a part of Girls Takeover event organised by @PlanGlobal. #GirlsTakeover

Murto added that she had “learnt some new things about legislation.”
In the afternoon, the student who actively campaigns on climate and human rights issues was to speak with MPs and the minister for development and foreign trade.
Her message to decision-makers has been that girls “need to realise more how important they are, and how they are just as good at technology as boys,” she told AFP.
“I think young people could teach adults to be more innovative and think more about the future,” she added.
The swap is part of a global “Girls Takeover” campaign by children’s rights charity Plan International, which aims to raise awareness of girls’ digital skills and opportunities in technological industries and highlight the problem of online harassment against women.

Although Finland scores highly in international gender equality comparisons, women are still heavily under-represented in technology firms and boardrooms, while the country’s share of females starting technology-related studies is the lowest in the OECD.
The global campaign coincides with the UN’s International Day of the Girl Child on Sunday, and will also allow girls take on the jobs of ministers in Kenya, Peru, Sudan and Vietnam.
Elsewhere, senior jobs at Microsoft, Samsung, Facebook and Twitter will go to teenage girls in countries including El Salvador, Guatemala, the Netherlands and the Philippines.
Finnish premier Marin, 34, became the world’s youngest head of government when she took office in December, leading a coalition of five centre-left parties who were all led by women.
Marin did not have Wednesday completely free however, as she took part in budget negotiations in the morning.
A planned working breakfast with Murto was cancelled at the last minute, but they were due to meet for a debrief in the evening.
Asked if she would be interested in doing the job full-time in a few years, Murto told AFP: “It’s not up to me to decide that, but possibly, yeah!”

A remarkable day at the Embassy of Lithuania in India / Lietuvos ambasada Indijoje commemorating the #InternationalDayOfTheGirl! On this day, we witnessed a trailblazing event as Divya assumed the role of Ambassador to advocate for girls' empowerment and women's social involvement in India. Throughout the day, Divya engaged with the Embassy's colleagues gained insights into everyday activities, and delved into the decision-making processes. It marks the fifth year that the Embassy has recognised this critical occasion. A powerful reminder that gender equality is not just a day's celebration; it's a commitment every day.
