"Did you know? The beating heart 💓 of a little one gives so much information about its well-being! ❤️👶
So, what should be the ideal heart rate of the baby inside the womb?
The baby's heart ❤️ is the first organ to develop and function, which is as early as 5-6 weeks of pregnancy 🤰, and it should function by seven weeks to call it a healthy 🤰pregnancy.
Baby's heartbeats 💓 are easily seen on ultrasound scans.
The baby's heart rate ranges between 100 to 120 beats/min to begin and gradually rises to 140 to 180 beats/min towards the end of the first trimester. 📈💗
During the second and third trimesters, the baby's heart rate ranges between 130 to 170 beats/min. 📆📈
The baby's heart rate fluctuates throughout pregnancy depending on its activity; the heart rate rises if the movement is more. 📉🔄
A slow heart rate is called bradycardia if it is less than 100 beats/min. ⚠️🩺 A fast heart rate is called tachycardia if it is over 200 beats/min. ⚠️🩺 Both these conditions need immediate attention from an expert doctor."

Period Equity. Period. By A.F.
The Evolution of Menstrual Products
People start menstruating at the average age of 12. However, you can begin as early as 8 years of age or as late as 16 years of age. Menstruation is the monthly shedding of the lining of your uterus. It is also known by the terms menstrual period, cycle or period. The menstrual blood is partly blood and partly tissue from the inside of your uterus. It flows from your uterus through your cervix and out of your body through your vagina. Pads, tampons, period underwear, and cups let you go about your normal life during your period, without getting blood on your clothes or sheets.
According to Historians, the first mention of menstrual products was found in ancient Egyptian medical records. The product was made from Papyrus, a plant that was also used to make woven goods, food, and paper. Other early mentions were made in the fifth century B.C. by a Greek physician and the father of western medicine, Hippocrates, who wrote that in Greece they used wrapped lint around wood as tampons. While in ancient Japan, they were often using paper for absorption.
1800’s - 1900’s
They used woven fabric or flannel to make homemade cloths to use during their menstrual cycle. Soon, people started having concerns about possible bacteria growth from these homemade cloths since they were reused between each cycle and cleaning may not have been adequate. This was the start of the feminine hygiene market. Between 1854 and 1915, twenty patents were filed for menstrual hygiene products. Some of these patents included the first menstrual cup, rubber underwear, and Lister’s towels.
1930’s - 1960’s
The 1930s produced an influx of new inventions in period products. Modern disposable tampons were patented in 1933 under the name “Tampax.” Most women did not stick to pads after learning how to properly insert tampons. In 1956, Mary Kenner, a female African-American inventor, invented the first sanitary belt with an adhesive to secure the pad in place. She created an adjustable sanitary belt with a moisture-proof napkin pocket built in. Her patent for the sanitary belt, unfortunately, was dismissed for thirty years due to racial discrimination. Women today find this menstrual pad to be incredibly useful.
2000’s - present
Since then, the market for period products has significantly expanded, especially when compared to what was used 200 years ago. Even standard pads and tampons have been innovated to be made from organic materials which is better for your body and the environment. You can now also use menstrual underwear and menstrual cups. There are even reusable pads you can use that are made of cloth which is also better for the environment. Marketers continue to use strategies built on the fear of knowing today, from odorized goods to subtle packaging. However, these advertisements have taken on a more positive tone recently, depicting feminine care products as empowering, encouraging women to take control of their bodies. Advances in menstrual innovation have had a massive influence on women's wellness and professional and personal freedoms throughout history. Throughout history, menstrual inventions have paved the way for women and people with cycles.

Completed Community Mapping of the Bujovu Neighborhood in Goma, DRC
Core to changing existing gender discrimination and violence is understanding how it is perpetuated and developing strategies to address it. Unequal access to community resources and exposure to risks and threats plays a big role. Over 120 resources and risks have been identified by us and our partner in this mapping exercise in Bujovu, home to our future program Girl Awakening. This is the first community resource scan of its kind to be done in the DRC. In our next program steps we will utilize this map, working with our partners les Etoiles Messagères and community stakeholders to identify ways to increase access for girls to resources and services that they are not getting equal access to, and to reduce girls’ exposure to the risks.
Among the resources identified are:
25 schools (just 2 of these offer secondary level education and the rest are primary which is an extremely low number for the total neighborhood population of 48,000).
9 health centers, though none are hospitals, so are only able to treat minor health issues.
An office of the community chef appointed by the local government who hold weekly meetings with leaders at the sub-neighborhood level.
7 factories: there are several big companies that have factories in the neighborhood producing things such as cement, coffee, cigarettes, and corn flour.
12 churches and 1 mosque
1 cultural center - not yet providing any programming to youth or specifically girls in the neighborhood.
Among risks identified are:
The most prevalent are brothels. 23 have been identified - meaning there are just as many (and likely more) brothels than primary schools in the neighborhood. Most (14) are located in a section of Bujovu called the Cellule Tyazo, where we will be recruiting girls from.
5 military camps, that while being responsable for security can be a threat to girls for transactional sex or other forms of extortion.
1 police station that similar to the military camps can be a threat to girls for transactional sex or other forms of extortion.
We’re looking forward to strategizing with community leaders, girls and staff on how to shift existing access to resources and services, reforming systems to increase equal access, and protect girls from risks and threats.
A special thanks to the Population Council’s technical support and the les Étoiles Messagères team members and community stakeholders who walked all over the neighborhood to locate the GPS points.

#Repost @equalitynoworg --- Two years ago, Imani* was raped by her neighbor and became pregnant as a result. She was 16 at the time and in primary school back in Moshi, Tanzania. Imani loved sciences and geography and wanted to work as a doctor or a nurse when she completed her studies. Imani represents tens of thousands of adolescent school going girls in Tanzania who can longer access education owing to the ban prohibiting pregnant girls and teenage mothers from attending school. Despite our efforts urging Tanzania to lift the ban, lack of political will has been the greatest obstacle. So we’ve taken Tanzania to court. Yesterday, in collaboration with our partners, we filed a case against Tanzania at the African Court on Human and People’s Rights in Arusha to challenge this policy and have it lifted. This #WorldChildrensDay we stand with Imani and every other girl that she represents. Head to the link in bio to learn more about the case and what it could mean for #girls across Tanzania. #EndSexualViolence #EndPregnancyDiscrimination #EndMaternityDiscrimination #WorldChildrensDay2020 #GirlsJustWannaHaveFundamentalRights #GirlsRights #GirlsEducation #LetGirlsLearn #WaacheMabintiWasome *Name has been changed https://www.instagram.com/p/CH0G4GLhha1/?igshid=15r3mavvexkq2
