Recruited but not ‘child soldiers’: Returning girls in South Sudan risk being left without support

“Girls associated with armed groups in South Sudan risk missing out on vital reintegration assistance as they are either unaware of available support or are overlooked as they don’t fit the profile of a ‘child soldier’. More than 19,000 child soldiers have been recruited since 2013 and while the total number of girls is unclear, of 934 children officially released in 2018, almost 30% were girls.”

“However, in collaboration with UNICEF, Child Soldiers International has learnt that girls in some areas, especially those leaving groups independently, risk not benefiting from reintegration support, simply because they are not known or considered as potential beneficiaries.”

Why is gender inequality even an issue? Why can't people be acknowledged for their skills & achievements & be rewarded with the jobs they are best suited for & get paid accordingly regardless of their gender [or race or creed]? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As a husband & father of 2 young girls, the rights of my wife & girls are very important to me. My wife & I emphasise every day to our girls that if they work hard, then they can accomplish anything; their skills & achievements are irrespective of their gender. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ International Women's Day highlights the need to acknowledge all women for their achievements & the incredible contribution that they make at all levels of our lives. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ However, when you look at those who women take the lead, follow their dreams & who simply stand up, it is important to remember that before these pioneers & leaders were women, they were girls 1st. We all need to step up & help young girls be confident to become the women they want to be. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Education is the key. Globally, 65M girls are not in school & of the 774M people that are illiterate, 516M [ie ⅔] are women. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Unfortunately, there are still millions of girls & women worldwide who have no control over their lives &/or can't make their own decisions; emotional, physical &/or sexual abuse are things that they face every day with no means of escape. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The #GirlsGetEqual campaign run by @planinternational aims to set up a world where girls can live without fear & discrimination to take on leading roles.
