Flashback: Bones - Ginny Blackmore

24th July 2023.

'Sprinter' by Dave and Central Cee is holding onto that top spot for yet another week. I guess kiwis are preferring hip hop over Olivia Rodrigo's 'Vampire' pop.

We'll take the opportunity to flashback ten years to 2013, when the #1 was Ginny Blackmore's 'Bones'

Blackmore is a local NZ artist, who came a little out of nowhere back in 2013. 'Bones' was her debut single and it managed to reach #1 in the charts for a single week. It's a bit of a pop crooner, not too dissimilar to Rodrigo's 'Vampire' in a way.

'Bones' didn't really chart anywhere else, although it did make a minor splash on the US Adult Top 40, and US Dance Club Songs. I'm assuming that was a remixed version because 'Bones' itself is not particularly dancey or club-y.

Blackmore went on to have a second #1 song with 'Holding You', her collaboration with Stan Walker. This feat makes her one of only fifteen kiwi artists to have multiple #1 singles in the NZ charts. Based on Blackmore's instagram account, she does appear to be still making music, although to my knowledge she hasn't released anything since 2015.

We'll see what next week brings and whether 'Sprinter' can keep holding onto the #1 spot. It has a little bit of competition, including a new song from BTS's Jung Kook, and Billie Eilish's 'Barbie' soundtrack song.

Flashback: Holding You - Ginny Blackmore & Stan Walker

22nd April 2019.

Lil Nas X has done it! He’s the first artist in a while now that’s managed to hold onto that top spot for more than just one week.

Which means of course we’ll flashback five years to check out the #1 song at this time in 2014. That was Pharrell’s ‘Happy’ which we’ve previously covered, so we’ll look at the #2 song instead - Ginny Blackmore & Stan Walker’s ‘Holding You’ - a song which I have no recollection of.

Okay... after hearing it I do remember this song vaguely. The bridge is the part that I remember the most, but as I can recall it was semi big here? I guess I just wasn’t paying much attention. This song isn’t really for me to be honest. It’s fine - a big ballad-y duet type thing with strong vocals from both performers, but it’s just not my cup of tea.

While ‘Holding You’ was a hit here in NZ, it didn’t really make any waves in other countries. Australia was the only other country in which it charted, but it only made it to #43 there. Such is the case for Kiwi artists unfortunately. Even if they’re talented the song’s don’t always get much, if any, attention overseas, although of course there are some big exceptions (see: Lorde, or OMC).

Still, Blackmore and Walker did actually get to #1 here, knocking Pharrell down to #2 for a single week before ‘Happy’ reclaimed that top spot. Both artists also had previous solo #1′s before ‘Holding You’ as well, so their combined power probably helped secure that top spot here, even if only for a brief time.

Blackmore seems to have dropped off the radar a bit since 2014. Walker’s still going strong though, and is pretty well-loved by the public especially after a recent documentary about his battle with a particularly nasty stomach cancer and his musical comeback afterwards. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him at the top of the charts again in the future.
