Born on the island of Vanuatu in the South Pacific Ocean since the early 1990s, Gilles Barbier has shrewdly cast himself as the ‘enfant terrible’ of France’s contemporary art scene. Mixing mordant humour with provocation Barbier’s work is both poetic and profane. Barbier’s intricate drawings and sculptures, which are often kitschy, show Barbier to be well versed in the dichotomy between verbal language and visual representation. Barbier is perhaps most well-known for his series of ageing super heroes. In ‘L’Hospice’ a grey-haired Wonder Woman cares for Captain America, who attached to an IV, lies bloated and incapacitated on a gurney. In another corner, a wrinkled Cat Woman sleeps in front of the TV while next to her a deflated and anaemic hulk sits comfortably in a wheelchair. One of Chapeau’s favourites is Barbier's sculptural installation ‘L’ivrogne’ or ‘The Drunk’. ‘The Drunk’ depicts a figure made of wax and mixed media fashioned after the artist himself, a clone if you will, with a spiralling whirlwind of thoughts physically emerging from his head. Within this circus of objects we find dreamy stars and clouds, violent bombs and dynamite and ominous crows and skulls.
