Montevecchia and Curone Valley Regional Park

Some photos from the woods where I went to collect chestnuts with my family. This area, about a hour drive NE of sprawling Milan, is gorgeous and so rich with history and biodiversity, while also showing, here and there, signs of past and present human management.

Over a thousand recorded species of plants can be found there, of which 20 are geophyte orchids (10% of the almost two hundred native to Italy), and twice as many are species fully protected by the law against collection. To complete the picture, 26 wild mammals, 9 amphibians, 8 reptiles and a large, unconfirmed number of birds call these woods and meadows home. Oh, and over 400 catalogued species of fungi.    

This should give you an idea of how important this park is, and how lush it looks throughout the seasons, so make sure to go visit if you’re nearby, but please be respectful of its fragile and complex ecosystem.
