YOOO they put out a poster for the new Ghost in the Shell adaption and it looks so good!
Tumblr media
Beautiful art style that is the most faithful to the original GITS manga that any animated adaption as ever looked. I'm super excited to see an animated GITS that actually keeps the tone from the manga which, is still serious when it needs to be and has complicated sci fi stuff but is also, and often very silly.
The Major's new design is so badass and is the most that she's ever looked like her original manga self as well. Her outfit is so cool, she has the classic hair but it's a lighter blue, and a very interesting aspect of her design is her arm being the most visibly robotic she's ever looked outside of seeing her body being built or when her arms get ripped off in every adaption, like she's usually all covered skin and stuff. Also one other thing to point out, of course it's the red Fuchikoma in the background from the original manga, and not the blue Tachikoma from SAC.
For the sake of comparison, every version of the Major-

Her design in the new poster looks especially how she looks with this outfit from the manga-
Tumblr media
The black armor is pretty similar which, full combat gear Major is always the best in every version but the long coat over it and the visible robot arm just makes it even more badass. Very excited for this new, more manga accurate adaption of Ghost in the Shell. Seeing what is pretty much the manga Major actually being animated is going to be really cool too, and looking forward to seeing her sillier side actually being adapted. Also hoping that she's still an explicitly polyamorous bisexual with infinite rizz and that her girlfriends make an appearance, I mean they did in Stand Alone Complex as well.
The whole art style looking very 80s/90s is so good and very unique for something released today. Keeping that 80s flair but with a modern polish, going by this poster looks so fucking cool and I'm excited to see it animated.

Gotta confess something... during a flight, I watched the original Ghost in the Shell, then watched the Solid State Society movie. Since I did no research before watching them, I thought Solid State Society was a sequel to the original and Motoko's absence was because of what happened in the original. Was confused why she had purple hair and had a new body, but I figured that was some weird evolution thing from the ending of the last one hahahaha. I didn't know Solid State was a separate continuity.

На «YouTube» канал «Ghost in the Shell» выложили опенинги всех 3-х «Stand Alone Complex».

Atsuko Tanaka (1962-2024)
Tumblr media Tumblr media

I just got done rewatching GITS SAC Solid State Society
Still an incredible film and a good cap off to the Stand Alone Complex series, interestingly enough it has elements of both Oshii films, this and those being different adaptions of a storyline from the original manga but this Stand Alone Complex does something different with it. Both with the case being investigated, it explores some different and interesting political issues in this one, and also with the personal story of the Major. Speaking of the Major, she's still awesome as ever and has some great moments here, also this might be her coolest design?
Tumblr media
It's the trench coat, and she sick sunglasses in this scene. At night. Also this song is fucking awesome as well. They got the singer back of the opening themes of both seasons, it sounds absolutely beautiful, has a part where it just rocks out AND THEN IT EVEN HAS A RAP VERSE!? Bro… it's too good.
youtube
I love the credits song too, awesome rock song but not as experimental.
youtube
But yeah I loved watching it again and with that I have now rewatched all of Stand Alone Complex. Still incredible and probably my favorite adaption of Ghost in the Shell.

Here's my Ghost in the Shell tier list mostly written to make fun of the titles:
S: Ghost in the Shell (1995 anime film), Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
A: Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, Ghost in the Shell (manga)
B: Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig
C: Ghost in the Shell (live-action), Ghost in the Shell: Arise - Alternative Architecture
D: Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex_2045
I suggest starting with the 1995 film, moving on to the first season of SAC if you enjoyed it, and bailing from the franchise once you get bored of the same iconic shots getting reused in different contexts
Ghost in the Shell is supposed to be good, right? What would be a good starting point for that? (Ideally available on Hulu and/or Netflix.)
So I actually do not like Ghost in the Shell! I think the Oshii film is quite bad, and I found what I watched of SAC to be on the boring side and did not continue. I thought that was enough of a good faith effort that I haven't really engaged with the franchise since.
Which means I am not an expert; maybe SAC gets good, maybe the most recent remake is great, maybe the manga is awesome - I do actually want to read the manga, I think it will not have the same failures the film has. It is of course subjective, if you think it is going to be your thing you should absolutely go ahead. When the 1995 film came out in the west it was a huge success, and no one here had any exposure to any other part of the franchise. Most fans started there, no reason you can't.
