Bone walls made of human limbs and skulls discovered under church in Belgium

Archaeologists recently discovered walls built from a macabre material: human bones, including shattered skulls, while excavating the grounds of a church in Ghent, Belgium.

By the end of the excavation, archaeologists had uncovered nine walls, built mostly with adult thighs and shin bones. The intermediate zones were filled with skulls, many of them fragmented, according to Ruben Willaert, Restoration & Archeology / Decoration, the Dutch company that found the walls during an excavation ahead of construction for a new visitor's center at the cathedral.

These ghastly structures were likely the work of people who, hundreds of years ago, cleared out an old graveyard to make room either for new bodies or a church renovation, said archaeologist Janiek De Gryse, on staff at Ruben Willaert and the excavation's project leader. Read more.

Domien Ingels followed a course in the workshop of Domien Van den Bossche and Hippolyte Le Roy. He also attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. In 1900 he became a deputy teacher, after which he also taught drawing and sculpture, until 1941. He shared a studio in the Begijnhof of Ghent with his friend C. Permeke (1886-1952). As the son of a butcher, Ingels became best known for his animal figures. In the public space in Ghent you can find, among other things, the horse of the 'Ros Beiaard' (in the Paul de Smet de Naeyerpark) and the King Albert Monument (in the King Albert Park).
