So apparently there's an official Gallifreyan translator now.
On the one hand, I'm really excited that Sherman's Circular is becoming more and more canon. On the other hand, it feels weird that such major part of the fandom is now being kinda... corporatized. But this blog isn't for my opinions and I don't want to influence yours. All I will say with conviction is that I really hope they credit the original creator.
However, for those who want some more info, I did a comparison between the new "official" translator, the old translator that most people just getting into Gallifreyan probably used, and my own style.
The first image in black is the old translator, the second in yellow on blue is the new one, and the third in blue is my style from two years ago, and all of them say "Never Give Up, Never Give In". (Though only mine includes punctuation). The first and biggest difference between the computer-translated ones and mine is that mine has the various words interlocked. This is something that anyone can do when they write the Gallifreyan on their own, little practice required, but it cannot be done by the computer translators. They only ever put the words in fixed, equidistant positions. Another major difference is the curve of the connecting lines -- this is another thing that neither translator will do for you. The old translator does allow you to curve the lines yourself, but is very finicky about it. The dots are worth noting as well -- in both translators, they are quite small, while I make them big and pretty separated, for ease of reading. In other words, in terms of style and readability, these computer translators will never replace those created manually.
However, there are clear benefits to the translators. They are extremely helpful for those who are just getting into Gallifreyan and want to double-check their work. So long as you remember that what really matters for readability -- the shapes and positions of the circles and the number of lines and dots -- the rest is just stylistic flourishes. And both allow you to download the Gallifreyan as a .svg so that you can edit it in Inkscape or Illustrator or whatever vector editing software you prefer. As for the comparison between the two translators, the new one has more color customization, and will probably better match how Gallifreyan appears on-screen (though I find it interesting that the Gallifreyan on the new Sonic has the starting point of each word be at the furthest point from the center of the circle, while this translator has them at the usual bottom), but the old one allows for more in-engine editing, and as the lines actually connect to somewhere and the dots are slightly larger, it is easier to read.
TL,DR: Manually-made Gallifreyan still allows for far more stylization and is generally the most easily readable, but both translating websites can be useful, especially as both can be downloaded as editable .svg files. The old one is more readable and has in-engine editing capabilities, but the new one allows for color customization and may be more accurate to what is seen on-screen. And Sherman needs to be credited for its creation.

Martinsville Cooked...Until It Was Cooked
Now, I will go ahead and admit this: I think I'm the polar opposite of a NASCAR boomer when it comes to tracks. I like most of the 1.5s, while I generally find the little bullrings like Bristol and Martinsville to be more demo derby than good racing. That being said...I think the Martinsville cutoff race yesterday delivered.
At least until the playoff shenanigans soured the end of the race.
One step back though, because let me set the stage for all this first.
I missed stage one of the race, ironically enough - I needed a bit of a break from racing after the Brazilian Grand Prix went from a chaotic wet race to the worst guy in the sport running away with it - but when I tuned in early on in stage two, it was already looking surprisingly good.
Chase Elliott was leading off strategy, Byron was gaining on him, but then behind them it was a pair of Fords battling with Brad Keselowski ahead of Ryan Blaney. Now, the way things were going, Byron could point his way into the championship four, as could Christopher Bell in the #20 Toyota, but...
Chase Elliott in the #9 Hendrick Chevrolet, Kyle Larson in the #5 Hendrick Chevrolet, and Ryan Blaney in the #12 Penske Ford were all heading towards a must-win scenario.
Thus, we had two Hendrick teammates battling and potentially knocking each other out of the playoffs, while behind, a pair of Fords were reeling them in.
Brad Keselowski was out of the playoffs, but he was racing for pride. He wanted to win at Martinsville.
Ryan Blaney, however, won at Martinsville the previous year to advance to Phoenix and won the championship that way.
Then Byron gets ahead of Elliott.
But...a caution comes out for Burton spinning, and it immediately breeds another when Truex also goes around. For a moment, I thought "ah crap we're getting into the short track nonsense part of the race" but no, not quite...instead, it led to a crucial strategic choice.
Byron and Elliott both pit off the Truex caution, Blaney and Keselowski stay out, along with Hamlin and Bell who are also sniffing the chance to advance.
And to add insult to injury, Elliott has a slow stop and drops to the back of the fresh tyre cars.
Keselowski gets out ahead and manages to win the second stage ahead of Blaney, Hamlin, Larson, Byron, and Bell.
This stage makes it official that Blaney and Elliott are must-wins, and Hamlin is more or less in the same boat. With non-playoff car Keselowski in the lead, as they run:
Logano is locked in from his win at Vegas.
Reddick is locked in from his win at Homestead.
Byron is 15 points above the cutoff line.
Larson is 6 points above.
Bell is 6 points below but can win tiebreakers off of previous results.
Hamlin is 17 below.
Ryan Blaney must win to advance.
Chase Elliott must win to advance.
Bell, however, can clinch a spot no matter what so long as he finishes 13th or above, therefore, Byron and Larson are in a points battle for the fourth and final spot. A points battle that becomes a moot point if any one of Hamlin, Blaney, or Elliott win.
Stage three is quite literally 200 laps long, so it turns into a bit of a lull for awhile as cars need to knock off laps, but then...Ryan Blaney begins his charge.
He overtakes Larson, goes hunting down Byron.
Catches Byron as William is lapping Shane Van Gisbergen, so Ryan Blaney bumps SVG up and into Byron, slipping underneath the both of them to take position. This is the kind of move that they say Martinsville is all about, bumping, banging, ruthless, but smart. All three cars continue.
Blaney again catches up to Keselowski but the #6 is a wily old fox and makes it hard to pass.
Fast forward to 117 to go, and it looks an awful lot like stage two; Elliott is leading after an earlier pitstop gave him the undercut, Byron is faster and is hunting him down, while Keselowski and Blaney in the Fords are also entering the picture.
A spin by Carson Hocevar gives all of them the chance to pit.
Meanwhile, Byron, Larson, Ryan Preece, and Austin Cindric stay out, making a play for track position.
The green flag comes out, Larson overtakes Byron, Cindric overtakes Preece, and the yellow comes out again as Kyle Busch lost a wheel on the restart. Byron is angry because he feels they shouldn't have restarted at all given a car lost a wheel, but NASCAR declares that Larson is the leader.
And in the following stint, things start to fall apart for Byron.
Elliott gets him off the restart, Blaney follows not long after, and even the likes of Cindric and Hamlin start pressuring him.
So at this point, it's Larson, Elliott, and Blaney the top three and each of them are in must-win scenarios given how Byron is running and how Bell has a points advantage.
Elliott forces his way inside of Larson to take the lead with 24 to go and completes the pass in turn one, keeping Larson out wide as Blaney grabs the draft and tries to follow him through.
Larson gets down in front of Blaney before turn three, but Larson is maybe a foot higher up in the lane than Blaney is, and that's all Ryan needs as he bumps Larson up in just the right way and then barges through to go side-by-side onto the start-finish straight, completing the pass in turn one.
Larson tries to bump Blaney up and retake the position, but Blaney keeps enough traction in the upper groove to come out ahead onto the backstretch. Now, he starts reeling in Elliott.
Ten laps later, Blaney sends it up the inside in turn three, gets a nose ahead through four, and comes onto the start-finish straight ahead of Elliott to take the lead with fourteen laps to go. Blaney restarted behind Cindric and Hamlin, overtook them both, overtook Byron, and charged through Larson and Elliott as well.
He literally moved through 3/4ths of Hendrick Motorsports to move into the lead. A hell of a drive.
Unfortunately...this is where the shitshow began.
Hamlin and Cindric moved ahead of the struggling Byron as well by this point, so Byron is sixth, the worst position he can be in and still advance. Ross Chastain, Austin Dillon, and Brad Keselowski are all behind Byron and are all faster.
Now, William Byron drives for Chevy, as do Chastain and Dillon.
Joey Logano, locked into the playoffs already, is a Ford driver.
Tyler Reddick, also locked in, drives for Toyota.
Ryan Blaney, about to win his way in, is in a Ford.
Larson and Elliott are out of it with Blaney winning and pulling ahead, while Christopher Bell with the points advantage is in 19th in a Toyota. Byron needs to finish 13 places ahead of Bell to advance, and 6 is exactly 13 ahead of 19.
If Chastain or Dillon pass their fellow Chevrolet, they'd be knocking their manufacturer out of the final four.
So instead, Dillon plants himself on the bottom, Chastain on the top, and they effectively block for Byron, keeping him in sixth place regardless of how slow he is.
So, Chevy is making sure that Byron doesn't lose points.
Now, what does Toyota do?
Well, Bubba Wallace starts reporting with three to go that he feels like a tyre is going down. He is off the pace, and Bell starts gaining on him, passing him in the final corner of the final lap.
Pause now, because what happens next flips the script.
At this moment, with Bell going around him, does Bubba Wallace really have a tyre going down? Technically speaking, it doesn't even matter, because he doesn't say he for sure has one, just that it feels like he has one. There's no penalty for thinking your car has a problem and driving accordingly.
And from his onboard, he does definitely seem to be struggling, and you can see cars going past him and establishing a gap.
That being said, as far back as ten to go, Bubba's onboard does show his spotter keeping him informed of the points situation between Byron and Bell.
And here's an interesting thing as well: at the start of the final lap, Wallace is forced high as Byron, Dillon, Chastain, Keselowski, and Logano, that whole group of cars, goes underneath him to put a lap on him. So he clearly sees the two Chevys behind Byron protecting him from the pair of Fords behind.
The #20 of Bell, also a lap down, tries to take the opportunity to slip under Wallace as well, however, he has a wobble in the middle of it, loses control, and hits the wall. Bell panics, throttles it, and rides the wall to the finish, crossing the line in 18th place.
This ties things with Byron, thus, Bell advances off the back of a tiebreaker.
The problem here is...you smell that smell? Yeah, that's the stench of bullshit.
You quite literally have two cases of race manipulation to gets drivers into the final four. Byron had two other Chevrolets blocking for him in a move which the fanbase has already memed as either Byron's Armada or the Chevy Motorcade - let me know which one you think is funnier in the comments - while with Toyota...
The generous interpretation is that Wallace had a genuine problem, was slow, and his spotter was keeping him informed on Bell just to keep one Toyota from taking out another.
The less generous interpretation is that 23XI informed Wallace that Bell was behind and needed one more point to advance, so they had Wallace fake a problem and deliberately slow down to make sure that Bell got through.
Bell did get through, however, he slipped on the marbles as it happened and wound up in the wall and decided to ride the wall to the finish. This is problematic, as the Martinsville wall ride was explicitly banned after 2022 when Ross Chastain used it to propel himself into the final four.
There is a bit of a distinction, in that Bell was initially attempting the corner instead of full throttling it into the wall, however, the end result is the same as Bell was full throttle against the wall at the end.
And that wall ride, I think, gave NASCAR an easy out as we unpause, because it makes what Christopher Bell did go from dubiously legal to definitely illegal.
You see, without it, you had Chevy definitely doing some race manipulation to keep Byron in the playoffs, while Toyota very likely had race manipulation as well to get Bell into the final four, so this was going to be a very sticky situation as NASCAR would have to figure out how to put an end to these manufacturer games.
Manufacturer games which have already flared up twice this season. First at Daytona, when RCR got pissed off at Parker Retzlaff for pushing Harrison Burton in an attempt to win the race, rather than helping Kyle Busch in another Chevrolet take the win.
Secondly, at Talladega, where Kyle Larson didn't push the Ford of Brad Keselowski to the win, instead allowing the fellow Chevy of Ricky Stenhouse Jr. to take the victory.
These races have decided who goes to the playoffs and who advances in the Round of 12, and now, we've seen two manufacturers manipulating the cutoff race for the final four.
And at least in the case of Chevrolet, we know for sure that there was a coordinated effort to help Byron.
Why? Well, remember Austin Dillon's spotter from Richmond? The guy who yelled "wreck him!" over a monitored radio channel as Dillon took a swipe at Hamlin to win the race? A bit of radio that caused NASCAR to strip Austin Dillon of a playoff berth?
Well, Dillon's spotter, henceforth known as Loose Lips, said the following things over the radio:
LL: "The #24 is two points to the good, if we pass him, he'll be out."
AD: "Does the #1 know the deal?"
LL: "Trying to find him to tell him...Justin, can you tell the crew chief also, clear off."
AD: "Does the #1 crew chief know the deal?"
LL: "Yeah, he should"
Like...Jesus Christ you amateur, watch what you say when you're doing something borderline illegal. You'd think he'd learn his lesson after the whole Richmond thing but evidently not.
So yeah, Chevrolet was definitely helping Byron, and as for Bubba Wallace, his car is currently being torn down by NASCAR. According to Bob Pockrass, the expectation is that there will be some sort of penalty if NASCAR finds nothing wrong with the car.
Oh and, because of how toxic the NASCAR fanbase is, I have to say this part: Bubba Wallace did what his team and his manufacturer expected him to do. The fact that he is black does not make him any more guilty than Austin Dillon or Ross Chastain.
Unfortunately, if Bubba Wallace is found to have helped Bell, I expect he'll receive the blunt of the criticism from a certain subsection of the fanbase. Don't be like them. Wallace is not the problem, Chastain is not the problem, Dillon, as dumb as he and his spotter are, is not the problem either.
Chevrolet wants a Chevy to win the championship, Toyota wants a Toyota to win the championship.
This is an inevitable result of the increasing amount of manufacturer alliances and tiered support.
So yeah, Chevy was stinking up the show, Toyota was probably stinking up the show as well, and that little wall ride by Bell gave NASCAR a way of ruling on the issue without addressing the core issue.
Both Byron and Bell benefitted from cars of the same manufacturer, so you can't punish one without punishing the other, however, Bell is the only one to benefit from a wall ride, therefore, NASCAR sends him to the back of the field based off that, and Byron advances to the final four with none of the manufacturer stuff addressed.
We'll see this week if NASCAR rules on either incident, but I'm not holding out hope.
NASCAR is not going to do anything that might piss off a manufacturer, not when nobody new has entered the sport since 2007.
Anyway, I feel bad for Blaney in all this, because he had this heroic drive to overtake all these other playoff cars and advance to the final four, getting the chance to defend his title. And instead of talking about that, everyone's just talking about this Chevy and Toyota drama.
So of the championship four: Tyler Reddick's team is suing NASCAR, Joey Logano is fifteenth in regular points and only got this far because Bowman was disqualified at the Charlotte roval, and William Byron advanced off the back of all this bullshit.
I really hope Ryan Blaney wins the championship, because anyone else would lead to an unbearable amount of offseason discourse.

how did u get the idea for the emoji icons? and can we make our own for our characters :pleading:
OOC: a few years back i made edits of official twemoji animal emojis (pngs at the time) to be sparklecare characters! they're really outdated and old and crusty because i only used pngs at the time, but when i started working on cometcare i thought it would be a cute little thing to make the profiles unique.
i'll try and explain how i do this as best as i can, sorry if this is confusing!
for context, twemoji is an open-source emoji font that is officially made by twitter. it's what discord uses for its default emojis! it's completely free. you can find all the assets and svgs here on the official github page. to edit them, go into the 'assets' folder after downloading and find your chosen emoji by scrolling for it in the 72x72 folder, these are all pngs.
unfortunately, the files arent sorted by name of what it is, but instead just letters and numbers. once you find the one you want, copy-paste the file name and search it in the svg folder (as the svg has the same file name as the png version) and copy it into your vector editing program.
its kind of a hassle to navigate through these repeatedly because there's SO MANY OF THEM, so what i recommend doing is copy-pasting all of the animals (and other objects if you want to do stuff like use the tophat like i did for soob) into one big svg canvas (or a folder if you want, but i recommend the canvas just so its easier) and copy and re-use them for each of your characters. i also recommend scaling up the image so when you export it, it's not super small and you can put it in an art program to make the icon.
you absolutely can use this idea, no need for credit! if you don't know how to work with vectors, it's relatively easy to learn, check out inkscape since its a free program! there's also paid programs like adobe illustrator but inkscape is something i learned to use in a high school art class so i'm pretty familiar with using it
you can use this method for basically anything you want, you don't need to limit it to toyhouse icons or anything! you can make custom emoji for servers and stuff too if you want :]
in theory you can make edits of the regular pngs, but its not as easy to edit the colors as it is in a vector editing program and can make the lines crusty

This is very interesting: a novel CAD package built on a text based file format that should allow you to check files into version control and automate tasks, plus a geometry engine optimized for GPU compute.
It's also got some noteworthy backers, the appeal of this is obvious to anyone who has ever tried to integrate CAD into a larger workflow, it takes a lot of manual shunting of files and tagging of releases and fighting with export formats, even with all the features SolidWorks and Inventor and SolidEdge have added over the years.
It's not parametric, of course, because that's a totally different approach to modelling that's much harder to automate this way. I'm not sure if that's reasonably possible without just doing SVG bullshit.
There's an LLM powered Text To CAD thing where you are meant to be able to just describe an object and get back the CAD for it but at least for now it can only do things that are relatively simple, it feels a little like a crutch to deal with how slow generating simple parts through code CAD can be. Defining an I-beam parametrically is the kind of thing you can do basically without thinking. I guess you'd probably want to have a library of parametrically defined common parts to pull from once you've been doing this for five minutes.
Close but no cigar! It does get the flange and web the right way around. Using inches because I assume it's trained in Freedomheit.
They're keeping their geometry solver closed source, but I'd be interested to see if declarative cad like this takes off in industry, it's a slow moving space but hardware design is increasingly available to startups and small businesses who might be willing to throw away a lot of old CAD philosophy.
A lot of industry uses constructive CAD like this, the US military has BRL-CAD. Never could get my head around it.

I must tell a story.
My 7 year old daughter has been really into science videos and particularly in learning about the chemical elements and atoms and such. My daughter is also half Chinese, and we’ve been encouraging her to learn more Chinese.
So I thought, for fun, I would make a bilingual Periodic Table with the Chinese characters along side the symbols, with pinyin pronunciation guide. If you don’t know, there is a unique Chinese character for every element. Yes, including the new ones. You can just make characters.
And once I got my parameters set, it went swimmingly. It’s easy to get references for the Periodic Table data, and I can go on Chinese Wikipedia for the characters and pinyin. Occasionally Wikipedia defaults to the Traditional character (I want Simplified because my wife is from mainland China), but that’s trivial to switch. It’s only really relevant because every single metal (Except Mercury) has a metal radical, and the metal/gold radical happens to be one of the simplified ones (釒 vs 钅 ).
That is, it went swimmingly until I got to f***n Nihonium.
Now, Nihonium is kind of funny in a way. Like, this name literally derives from the Japanese 日本, so one would think they’d incorporate the 日 and somehow derive the pronunication from the Chinese pronunciation of that character (rì), but instead, they coined a phonetic character from the first syllable, 鉨, (pronounced nǐ), following the same pattern as every other element that was not known to Chinese before relatively modern times. Amusing.
Did you notice that I used a traditional metal radical there?
Yes, I did, because I cannot f***king find A GODDAMN FONT THaT SuPpOrTs THE SIMPLIFIED CHARACTER!!!
I have fonts on my computer that I use specifically for Chinese subtitles. They do not have the simplified form of 鉨. Someone helped me find the font Wiktionary has. I downloaded it. It does not have the simplified form of 鉨.
Now, Unicode only added this character in 2018, and Chinese fonts take a long time to develop, so they could have just not caught up. Which means I’m probably going to have to construct an SVG of this character myself to make it right.
Simplified forms are also missing for Tennessine and Oganesson. Luckily, it looks like at least Tennessine should be the same in simplified and traditional. For Oganesson, I’m getting mixed information.
But Nihonium? It’s just... ugh.

Ruins of Alph Ho-Oh replica
I was yet again approached by one of my friends to create something from Pokémon, namely the Ho-Oh puzzle from the Ruins of Alph from Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal. I did such a good job with my previous Pokémon creations that they felt compelled to have something too. This time I was compensated fairly.
I used a screen shot from the Game Boy Color game, traced it in Adobe Illustrator. Instead of trying an exact copy I tried to imitate a look of a ragged outline that resembles the pixelated look without being too on the nose.
Then the file needed to be converted into a SVG in Inkscape (because of some wonkyness importing it into Autodesk Fusion 360), and then imported it into Autodesk Fusion 360, where I extruded the areas into a 3D-printable giant cookie cutter model. With that giant cookie cutter printed out I put that immediately into action and stamped an equally-sized slab of polymer clay (about 15cm x 15cm) and textured it with a balled-up piece of aluminium foil. After 30 minutes of baking and a little bit of cool-off time the most arduous part began with the painting process. It took me about 6 hours of carefully building up (and messing up) the paint job with the crappy acrylic paint that won't get used up fast enough. I messed it up a few times trying some color experiments and using my miniature painting washes. The last part was that gave me the most head ache as they are hard to fix when applied. Washing or rubbing it off meant that the crappy acrylic paint would also be removed. I felt stuck at some point using the wash as it made the surface too glossy and the brown darkened a ton. I was disheartened for a bit but rolled with that mistake. All I wanted was to have some minor darker variations. The majority of the time painting on it was to create a more coherent look by switching between dry brushing and applying very thinned layers of more washes. I got to a point that made me happy again with the outcome (also a little bit of sleep helped too).
For the photo I used my Canon EOS 350D (Canon EOS Rebel XT), for which I needed to buy a new battery. The old battery couldn't hold a charge. Next to my house there is a big patch of moss I find quite appealing to look at and I thought it would complement the golden-brown paint job very well. I propped it up with a small box so the whole thing wouldn't sink completely into the squishy moss bed.

So my aunt bought me a PC to replace my 5.5 year old laptop that has seen two repairs and is dying. This new PC is from Aftershock, and will be delivered sometime this week, but can I just. Tell you guys the hysterical turn of events involved in this singular purchase?
So, we place the order, and get the invoice via email. All is well and good. A service rep for the brand emails me to ask for the image I want engraved on the glass and how I want it positioned. Oh fuck. Wrong panel. So I let them know I meant the other panel. They say no problem, they'll amend the invoice for me and send it out. Two days later, no invoice. Contact customer service out of curiosity. Oh. They're on leave and I'll have to wait for them to be back first. Sure thing, no biggie.
They somehow get the invoice out ten minutes later. Cool. Thanks dude.
The estimated turnaround time is 2 to 4 weeks. I think: "Okay, I have four weeks to get the rest of the peripherals."
Fast forward about three weeks. I realize the lunar ghost month is coming and my parents are superstitious about bringing big permanent fixtures into the house then. I go to customer service again and ask if it can be expedited a little bit. Customer service takes an hour between responses and speaks half in emoji. That's entertaining, but not very informative. Their office hours end at 8pm without a definitive response. Thanks Gary, very cool, but damn. Ah well.
Today: I contact support again and give them the details and ask if they can expedite it a little bit, just anytime before August 4. Guy on the line says "oh yeah we can probably get it out to you by tonight actually". Panic because I haven't gotten a keyboard or mouse yet. Heads out to buy that. While outside, I get the most wet cat message from the customer service line: "Umm We made some mistakes with your glass engraving actually and the team is building a new chassis for you right now, the delay is probably going to take 2 to 3 biz days, so we can't deliver tonight." And I'm amused, because what kind of mistake warrants that level of do-over? So I ask. Apparently it wasn't so much a quality fault as it is a straight up production error. I'm guessing they completely fucked up the scale of the svg file. Ah well. I got my keyboard from a friend and a cheap Logitech mouse while texting with customer service.
Me: Hey can you guys deliver in the morning slot if you gotta reschedule anyway? I work evenings and won't be home to sign for the package if you deliver then.
Customer Service: Yeah we'll put down a note for you! Thanks for understanding :)
Me: (WHY ARE THEY SO WHOLESOME??)
Like. On goddess, I'm not even mad because I'm so entertained and actually don't feel like it's a chore trying to communicate with customer service.

So Can NASCAR Drivers Turn Right or Not?
So in the past couple of weeks, I've watched a couple of races and a couple of things crossed my timeline that had to do with the following question: just how good are NASCAR drivers at turning right?
I don't mean this in like the Formula One fan newbie kinda way, I mean this as like a legitimate discussion as to the quality of the NASCAR field and the fact that road course ringers have seemingly returned to the series.
So, first things first, Shane van Gisbergen. Love him, New Zealander race car driver that went over to Australia, won three Supercars championships and three Bathurst 1000s. SVG then came over to America last year, won the NASCAR Chicago Street Race to be the first guy to win in his first attempt since 1963, and impressed so much that Trackhouse partnered with Kaulig Racing in the Xfinity Series to give Shane a full-time campaign in American stock car racing.
Well, last week he won the Pacific Office Automation 147 at Portland International Raceway, and this week he won the Zip Buy Now, Pay Later 250 at Sonoma. Which brings two things to mind:
One: Gee Xfinity races have some crappy ass names, don't they?
Two: Wow, he went back-to-back on road courses...that is really impressive, but also kinda sad.
Like two weeks in a row now the Xfinity field got beat by a thirty-five-year-old rookie on road courses. This is supposed to be the most road course heavy era of NASCAR, in the past five years the top three NASCAR series have gone to the likes of Mosport, Road America, Mid-Ohio, the Daytona Sports Car Course, the Charlotte Roval, the aforementioned Chicago Street Race, Circuit of the Americas, and NASCAR's traditional road courses in the form of Sonoma and Watkins Glen.
NASCAR drivers turn right a lot, they're not the oval only meme that F1 fans like to present it as, so what is going on?
Well, I think the simplest answer is that Shane van Gisbergen is a damn good race car driver. Supercars have long been compared to NASCARs and that's even truer in the Next Gen era, plus he's gotten a lot of support and advice from Marcos Ambrose, someone who I'll talk about more shortly. Plus, there's also Scott McLaughlin.
SVG and Scotty Mac are quite possibly the two best drivers to ever come out of Supercars, and we've seen Scott be successful in Indycar for a number of years now. Just this last weekend he was competing for the win at Road America with his Penske teammates. So it's not that NASCAR drivers are bad at turning right, it's that they've been unlucky enough to come up against a once in a generation talent.
To support this, there were another two Supercars drivers in Sonoma this past weekend. Cam Waters in the #60 RFK Mustang and Will Brown in the #33 RCR Camaro, and quite frankly, both of them had weekends full of bad luck that didn't amount to much of anything. Will was third in one of the practice sessions, and that's as close as he got to pulling off an SVG-esque performance in the Cup race.
And even in the Xfinity race, Ty Gibbs and Austin Hill both presented very real threats to SVG during the race, before Gibbs got caught up in a wreck and spun around into his own teammate trying to get going again, and Austin Hill got pushed into the grass after trying to slam the door shut on SVG in turn two.
It wasn't a cake walk.
Hell, Boris Said, long considered to be the archetypal NASCAR road course ringer, has been around the series since the mid to late 90s...he's never won a Cup race. He has one truck win at Sonoma and one Xfinity (then Nationwide) win at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve to his name.
So even way back when, NASCAR drivers could handle themselves on the road courses.
There are three road course ringers that have had a lot of success in the modern era, and I think all of them subvert the idea that it's as simple as being able to turn right.
The first is the great Juan Pablo Montoya, who famously got sick of F1 mid-2006, quit McLaren, and decided to become a NASCAR driver instead. Well, come 2007, and JPM is driving the #42 Dodge for Chip Ganassi Racing, and he won at Sonoma in his first attempt. He would only win one more NASCAR race, the 2010 Watkins Glen race. Despite this, I would argue his best season was 2009, when he finished eighth in the points after running as high as third in the season.
The high point was six top five finishes in eight races towards the end of the season, all of which were on ovals. One of which, Fontana, he was well acquainted with from his CART days!
The second is Marcos Ambrose, who in 2011 and 2012, had two consecutive duels with Brad Keselowski at Watkins Glen and came out on top both times. Those two races are badass, and I recommend you watch them, because it's just two big giant stock cars fighting tooth and nail without a care in the world for track limits. It's freaking glorious.
But after that 2012 Watkins Glen win? Well, Marcos then took two straight fifth placed finishes, at Michigan and Bristol, two ovals, and two very different ovals, no less. The third is AJ Allmendinger, who is still in NASCAR and still doing well. With wins on road courses in Cup and the old Champ Car series, and wins on both road courses and ovals in Xfinity. His story continues, most recently as SVG's Kaulig teammate.
So, the moral of the story? Being a good road course racer isn't enough to win NASCAR road races, you need to be a pretty damn good race car driver, and you need to learn stock cars. That means you'll have good showings on the ovals as well as the road courses.
To that end, in addition to SVG's back-to-back Xfinity wins, he also finished third at Atlanta earlier in the season and managed to finish on the lead lap in a Cup race at Talladega this year as well. In fact, I remember in that Talladega race SVG did well in the draft and worked his way to the front, only to fall back when the uppermost line collapsed behind him, and he was left all alone a lane above the drafting pack.
Something that could happen to anyone in a restrictor plate race in NASCAR.
So...NASCAR drivers are good at turning right, the top "road course ringers" in the form of JPM, Marcos Ambrose, and Shane van Gisbergen just happen to, you know, be pretty damn good drivers, and Xfinity races have some crappy ass names.
They let the crappiest name of them all die though.
So please, let's pour one out for the Beef. It's What's for Dinner. 300, the NASCAR Xfinity season opener at Daytona International Speedway.
RIP, 2021-2023. Your name was so bad that it was actually great.

Silverback's Entrance Shifts Gorilla Brothers' Playfight Dynamics by SloggerVlogger Gorilla Bobóto, aged 4, from the Krefeld Zoo, appears to have a tune in his mind as he executes some spins and proceeds to play the drums on a log. He still possesses ample energy for a playful scuffle with his 8-year-old brother, Pepe. Both the youthful gorillas wear expressions of playful intent, engaging in tugs and shoves. Take note of their gleaming, pearly white teeth :-). They take a brief pause, during which Pepe approaches for a friendly greeting. He then ascends the wooden structure and gracefully leaps over to the rope. After a few swings, he descends to the ground, indulging in a series of spins. Suddenly, Bobóto tumbles from above, although I'm unable to change my position due to the presence of people around me. However, I resume recording just in time to capture the moment when Pepe playfully nips at Bobóto's neck, coinciding with the buzzing of an insect (please note that the original sound was too noisy, so this is a substitute, same as most of my videos). Pepe pushes Bobóto aside when their father, Silverback Kidogo, approaches. #KrefeldZoo #Gorillas #sloggervloggergorillas Want to know more about the troop? While it’s not yet clear what Adobe will do with Figma, and while the Figma CEO has claimed that Figma will operate autonomously, here’s a free alternative just in case.

hi! sorry to bother but i was wondering if you know some resources at how can i learn to make themes? im already learning html/css but im finding hard to find good resources to learn how to make themes :( btw: love your work!
Hello! Thank you for the compliment and your interest in making themes.
Since you’re already learning HTML and CSS, I don’t think I need to tell you about w3schools or stackoverflow – you probably came across them yourself already. :)
The best way to understand tumblr themes is to look at the official guide for creating custom themes. There, all of the (necessary) variables are listed and their purpose is described as well.
Base codes can be very helpful to see how these elements look when they are put together, plus the HTML works already so you can focus on manipulating elements with CSS.
@buildthemes is an entire blog dedicated to teaching people how to code themes. You have to view the blog in its own tab to access the different chapters.
@theme-hunter also has a neat list of tutorials you can use for creating amazing themes.
I hope these resources are helpful!
