What books have you been reading since your last update?
I don't remember what I shared with my last update, so apologies if I repeat anything, but these are some of the books I've read over the past couple months:
•An Unfinished Love Story: A Personal History of the 1960s by Doris Kearns Goodwin (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) I'm actually still reading this new book by the legendary Doris Kearns Goodwin, so I still have a couple of chapters to go, but I can definitely recommend it. This is undoubtedly the most personal book that DKG has ever written, and it's a fascinating story.
•Charging a Tyrant: The Arraignment of Saddam Hussein by Greg Slavonic (BOOK | KINDLE)
•Life: My Story Through History by Pope Francis with Fabio Marchese Ragona (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)
•George VI and Elizabeth: The Marriage That Saved the Monarchy by Sally Bedell Smith (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)
•Byron: A Life in Ten Letters by Andrew Stauffer (BOOK | KINDLE)
•The Emperor: Downfall of an Autocrat by Ryszard Kapuscinski
•Homegrown: Timothy McVeigh and the Rise of Right-Wing Extremism by Jeffrey Toobin (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)
•The Making of a Leader: The Formative Years of George C. Marshall by Josiah Bunting III (BOOK | KINDLE)
•The Year of the Three Kaisers: Bismarck and the German Succession, 1887-88 by J. Alden Nichols
•God Is Ever New: Meditations on Life, Love, and Freedom by Pope Benedict XVI (BOOK | KINDLE)
•Paul VI: The Divided Pope by Yves Chiron (BOOK | KINDLE)
•Buffalo Bill and the Mormons by Brent M. Rogers (BOOK | KINDLE)
•The Great Abolitionist: Charles Sumner and the Fight for a More Perfect Union by Stephen Puleo (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)
•Macho Man: The Untamed, Unbelievable Life of Randy Savage by Jon Finkel (BOOK | KINDLE)
•Business Is About to Pick Up!: 50 Years of Wrestling in 50 Unforgettable Calls by Jim Ross with Paul O'Brien (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)
•Zanzibar Was a Country: Exile and Citizenship Between East Africa and the Gulf by Nathaniel Mathews (BOOK | KINDLE)

Meghan Markle and Wallis Simpson both narcissistic with weak husbands author suggests. Sally Bedell Smith says the Dukes of Sussex and Windsor were both weak men drawn to domineering wives by u/ElectricalAd9212
Meghan Markle and Wallis Simpson both narcissistic with weak husbands, author suggests. Sally Bedell Smith says the Dukes of Sussex and Windsor were both weak men drawn to domineering wives Its good that the word 'Narcissist' is corrrectly being applied to her.Next it needs to be the word 'sociopath' that becomes synonymous with her name.from the Telegraph( link)+++++The Duchess of Sussex has the same “narcissistic and controlling” quality as Wallis Simpson and married a similarly “weak” man, a biographer of the Royal family has claimed.Sally Bedell Smith said there were clear parallels between the Sussexes and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, with both relationships ruled by “domineering” wives.Bedell Smith, an American, is the author of a biography of George VI, the Duke of Windsor’s brother, and his wife, the late Queen Mother.Speaking at the Oxford Literary Festival, Bedell Smith said that the breakdown of relations between Princes Harry and William had echoes of the difficult relationship that the king, known as Bertie, had with his errant brother.“There are similarities. The Duke of Windsor did a lot of harmful things,” Bedell Smith said.“It’s different – Harry was never going to be king – but I think there are similar feelings of betrayal that have resulted in William, in particular, being furious with his brother, and with good reason.“They had a difficult childhood but there was a period of time, as was the case with Bertie and David, when they were very close.“And an American woman, in each case, came into the picture and changed the dynamic of the whole thing.”Bedell Smith, who is American, went on: “In some respects, Meghan and the Duchess of Windsor have similar qualities: very narcissistic, very controlling, very dominating. And if you read [the Duke of Windsor’s] letters, you can see how weak he was and how much he needed a domineering woman, and it feels as if Harry is somewhat the same way.”She said that the Duke of Windsor threw the monarchy into turmoil over his “obsession” with Wallis Simpson but the abdication “delivered Britain from an irresponsible king” and replaced Edward with a king known for his diligence and decency.Bedell Smith’s book, George VI and Elizabeth: The Marriage that Saved the Monarchy, follows her biographies of the King (when he was the Prince of Wales), Elizabeth II and Diana, Princess of Wales. post link: https://ift.tt/aZmlVS0 author: ElectricalAd9212 submitted: March 17, 2024 at 10:31PM via SaintMeghanMarkle on Reddit disclaimer: all views + opinions expressed by the author of this post, as well as any comments and reblogs, are solely the author's own; they do not necessarily reflect the views of the administrator of this Tumblr blog. Sir Alan Lascelles, King George VI and Maj. Gen. Robert Laycock, Chief of Combined Operations, on the bridge of HMS Arthusa in June 1944 as they cross the English Channel after Operation Overlord. The King visited the French invasion beachhead, though he was kept a very safe distance from the front line of battle, transferring to a “Duck” amphibious landing craft that “waddled” up the beach.
With only days to go before the invasion, both George VI and Churchill decided they should witness the historic landing on the beaches of Normandy at close range from one of the “bombarding ships.” At their weekly luncheon on May 30, the King told the prime minister the idea had been “in my mind for some time.” Churchill suggested they go together. “I told Elizabeth about the idea & she was wonderful as always & encouraged me to do it,” the King wrote in his diary. Tommy Lascelles was horrified by the proposal. He “shook the King” by asking “whether he was prepared to face the possibility of having to advise Princess Elizabeth on the choice of her first Prime Minister in the event of her father and Winston being sent to the bottom of the English Channel.
- “George VI and Elizabeth: the Marriage that Saved the Monarchy” , Sally Bedell Smith
The King was easily convinced by Lascelles not to go, but Churchill required a heavier hand. The King even considered showing up in Portsmouth and physically stopping him from boarding a ship, before the PM finally stood down. It was a rare and rather silly episode of disagreement between them.
But George VI did get to visit the armies in Normandy on 16 June, ten days after the landing, along with Lascelles and officials. Although the Channel waters were choppy for their crossing, by the look on his face in the photo, l’d say Bertie was glad to go!
“It was most encouraging to know that it was possible for me to land on the beaches only 10 days after D Day,” the King wrote.

To an unusual degree, George VI shared his wartime responsibilities with Elizabeth. An “unprecedented” feature of the lunches Winston Churchill had with the King at Buckingham Palace each Tuesday “was the presence of the Queen at these private conversations,” according to Elizabeth’s official biographer, William Shawcross. The mutually supportive trio met at Buckingham Palace in a dimly lit dining room with boarded-up windows, or in the “immense catacomb” of the Palace air raid shelter. George VI described many of these encounters in his diary. Elizabeth, who considered herself “very much a part of the team with the King,” said virtually nothing about them.

The King recognized that Kennedy’s pessimistic and coldly calculated views ran counter to his own. The American ambassador would continue to adamantly insist, in public and in private, that Germany’s superior military power would surely defeat Britain, and that American forces should never be deployed. George VI and Elizabeth saw Joe Kennedy just once more socially, at a Buckingham Palace luncheon after a scaled-back State Opening of Parliament in late November 1939…. [this photo]
Besides objecting to Kennedy’s defeatism, George VI judged him “always the shrewd hard business man” who thought “in terms of dollars as against the terms of human feelings.”

The Queen by Matthew Dennison Book Review!
(image: Head of Zeus Publishing)
Anyone who knows even a little inkling about me will know how much of a supporter I am of The Queen and the British Royal family. Since my childhood, I've been fascinated with Queen Elizabeth, even telling my Mom as young as age three (in the late 90s) I wanted to, "visit a place with a Queen".
At that age I didn't know the Queen by name, but the image I had inside my head was definitely of Elizabeth. A woman with short white hair wearing a crown was what the image of a, "Queen" , was to me. Fast forward to late 2010, just before William and Kate's engagement, and I became a full blown Royal watcher. Since I have been 14, I collect magazines, make an effort to watch video appearances, see documentaries, and follow many Monarchy devoted blogs and social media accounts to keep up with what is happening within "the fold". I watch The Crown every season on its release date (or close to its release date), and know all the latest buzz, but bizarrely, I never have sat down to read a full life biography of Queen Elizabeth. I have magazines, and coffee table books about her, but never chose out a biography. It's so difficult to choose a good one in a sea full of books, and for that, I am so thrilled I got the opportunity to read distinguished royal author Matthew Dennison's (he has written three other royal biographies) newest book simply and elegantly titled: The Queen. What makes Dennison's book stand out against the rest is firstly it's one of the first books to be published about the Queen after the death of Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh. It looks at their relationship throughout its entirety, giving a fresh examination on the longest royal marriage in history. It was comforting to be reassured how strong the bond between Philip and Elizabeth was. Sure they had their rough patches in their relationship, and nasty rumors along the way, (particularly in the late 50s), but I'd venture to say any marriage, and relationship that was established for 73 years does. It's not so much the bumps in the road they had, it was how they were able to navigate and work through them that counts. It's important to remember Philip and Elizabeth fought for their love, at the time of their marriage with anti-German sentiment, and they endured right up to Philip's death. Its inspiring, especially in the time we live in now. Secondly, I will mention this book does not deviate on tangents about others, its focus is always centered on Elizabeth. Throughout her long reign, many players both personally and professionally have crossed paths with HM; prime ministers, daughters-in-law, members of staff, and a whole bunch of others. Rather than devoting entire paragraphs to other players such as Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Princess Diana, HM The Queen Mother, or Private Secretary Martin Charteris, Dennsion gives us info about them on a need to know basis in relation to their relation to Queen Elizabeth. This keeps the writing focused with a strong flow in regards to the star subject. At the same time, it allows you to have basis of facts of certain players you may not know much about. During my own reading, to have a background context of the Prime Ministers was certainly a highlight for me, as I personally don't know much about the British Parliament and the people in it! Moreover, I want to point out how fascinating it was to read an in depth analysis of HM's childhood and young adult life before becoming Queen, as it's really the "least" documented part of her life. As with Queen Victoria many people only see Elizabeth as, "The old lady Queen", and it's sad many forget at one point she was a vibrant young women who reveled in being a 1950s military wife, and someone who grew up in a close knit household in a family unit of consisting of "we four" (herself, her parents, and sister, Margaret).
When she was born in 1926, Elizabeth was not in immediate line for the throne as her father Bertie (later George VI) was the second son of George V. David (later the abdicated, Edward VIII) was the oldest son and therefore, first in line. Elizabeth's childhood until the 1936 abdication (and the following Second World War) was spent as minor royalty, that only serious royal watchers in the 1920s/1930s would read about. Yet at the same time, she was the only "princess" at the time of her birth, and she was the only titled royal grandchild. Elizabeth had cousins who were daughter of her aunt, Princess Mary, Countess of Harewood, but those two sons were not HRHs. I learned just how fascinated people were with HM in her childhood, and it really drew parallels to how today people are fascinated with Princess Charlotte. From sparking name trends, to clothing trends, to making popular toys come en vogue, princess inspiration has always been in the public interest! Finally, I'd like to bring the to attention the fair criticism this book brings to Elizabeth's reign: it's no secret that no one is perfect. Elizabeth has had her fair share of political clashes, family problems and even scandals within her long reign. Its balanced in saying the longer one lives, the more events- both good and bad- you witness. The book is pretty nuanced when bringing up touchy topics such as the Princess Margaret and Group Captain Peter Townsend's romance, HM's parenting skills/ relationships with her children, the Aberfan disaster of 1966, and Princess Diana' death to name a few.
As in within the book, it's all about points of view and the facts. I'm delighted to say the book doesn't take sides when viewing these topics, rather gives enough info for the reader to form their own opinion. I must say, however, I particularly didn't care for the slightly snide remarks given towards Princess Diana- always calling her every move "revenge" towards the family. That rubbed me the wrong way, but as I said, it's all about perception.
Overall, this book was a really informative read that is not just a rehash of the same ol', same ol' you would read in any random biography of Queen Elizabeth. With the last chapter clocking in at page 506, it may seem like a long dung out read, but it goes by quickly once you start digging in. (Personally I spotted one error on page 403, it's William Arthur Philip Louis, not William Philip Arthur!)
What I personally took away from the read was The Queen is an enduring woman. She's witnessed hardships of war, family crisis, premature deaths, scandals, and even the covid-19 pandemic, yet she's always been there for her people, her family and her country. She's been able to navigate changing times and as The Crown actress Claire Foy has said in her 2017 Golden Globes acceptance speech, Elizabeth has been at "the center of the world" since 1953 when she ascended to the throne. I don't think I myself could do better if I were in her shoes, and all that's left to do now, I believe, is to appreciate her hard work and dedication. God save the Queen!
Above: My Copy of The Queen with (some of!) my other Royal books! :)
I'd like thank Hailey and the whole team at Kaye Publicity for sending me a copy of the book to read and review. A BLESSING ON THE QUEEN IN THE IROQUOIAN TRADITION A member of the UEL Association who is a Kanienkehaka Embassador at Large, wrote to the League as follows: Please remember our Mohawk members, who would like to express our good wishes and thanksgivings to our Sister. You may be familiar with our ceremonial blessings, and the thanksgiving address to be offered before all matters; it is an Iroquoian custom:
Next year marks the 70th Anniversary of The Queen’s reign. Our Monarchy has never before seen a Platinum Jubilee! Thus the occasion calls for celebration, thanksgiving and above all, a sense of gratitude and unity. LEAGUE FLAGS NOW AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER AT DISCOUNTED RATE With hundreds of new members in recent months, the League has received a number of requests as to when we will re-issue the League Flag. Part of our Armorial Bearings, it bears a Royal Crown by personal permission of Her Majesty The Queen. Produced for many years by our friends at the Flag Shop, it is ideal for your den or boathouse, a kid's bedroom, college dorm - with grommets so it can if you wish also be flown on a flag pole outdoors Its dimensions are 24 x 42 inches, and it is made of 200d nylon. We order and keep only a limited stock, so as not to tie up funds in inventory, as it is a specialty item. PRE-PRODUCTION SPECIAL: $85 INCLUDES POSTAGE LIMIT: TWO PER MEMBER If you wish to reserve a Flag (we should receive it in around three weeks) kindly access the League’s online store at https://store.monarchist.ca/en/products and make a “Fighting Fund” donation for $85. We will know your purpose, and get a Flag right off to you once we have received them. THE LEAGUE’S TARTAN SCARF Progress Report Thanks to our friend Matthew Rowe, who runs the Prince of Wales-patron Campaign for Wool in Canada, we have located a UK manufacturer who is willing to manufacture scarves in a small quantity by commercial standards. The fine Tartan chosen by you, and designed by our member Carol Martin, will be woven of wool, sized 180cm (app 70 in) X 30cm (app 11½ in) with tassels of 7cm (app 2 3/4 in). We will approve the cloth material this coming week. It appears a custom label may be expensive given the quantity required - we will do our best to resolve that issue and deal with somewhat tiresome but important details remaining, such as the method of shipping to Canada and potential duty and taxes. It is our hope to come up with firm pricing in June, and shortly after to solicit pre-orders within the price range acceptable to the several hundred members who expressed interest in a scarf. All of which is to say - we are on track, and look forward to producing and getting to you the League’s first - and long overdue - piece of apparel suitable for both women and men! AND NOW.... WHAT (SOME OF) YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR... OUR SPRING SALE! These monarchical souvenirs, for one reason or another not suited to our annual Silent Online Auction in September, have been donated to the League in recent months. In a tube with Britannia-watermarked tissue paper and a gold Britannia seal, we suspect it was sold at the resting place of the ship, now a tourist attraction. Some water stains. Will need to be dry mounted to remove creases from rolling, after which it will occupy pride of place in a den, a kid’s bedroom or a man cave! $25 4) A CRAZY FUN ITEM: COLOUR RUBBER 3-D DIANA KEYCHAIN You will never lose your keys with this app 1 3/4 inch high rubberized moulded Diana key chain! We’ve not seen anything like it previously. You might well use it - or display it as a sure conversation-starter on a shelf, perhaps next to a bobbling Queen! $20 5) SILVER JUBILEE MEDALLION & CHARLES AND “LADY DIANA SPENCER” WEDDING CROWN Both 1 1/2 inch diameter. Gold-coloured Souvenir medallion bears profile of The Queen, 1977, with a surround referencing the Jubilee. The Crown, encased in a plastic holder by the Westminster Bank, is official coinage from 1983, with the usual image of The Sovereign on front, and verso, a profile of Charles and Diana with a surround referencing the occasion and year. $25
(the mark on the Royal Arms is not a defect, but a seller's sticker that is not on our plate)6) UNUSUAL, RATHER-MODERN IN DESIGN, SOUVENIR PLATE FOR SILVER JUBILEE - BY WEDGEWOOD A heavy 10" plate produced by Wedgewood in 1977, respectful and colourful, but, in our view, not really “traditional” and thus of special interest. A deep blue silhouette of Thhe Queen in centre, surrounded by the Garter motto, with tne lancets extending which depict Heralds, Guardsmen and elements of the Household Cavalry and one Royal Shield surmounted by the Crown. Many decorative flowers, Rim references the Jubilee and states “God Save The Queen.” Crimson tracery surrounds the plate. Condition: as new $35 (The picture is the Van Dyke etching of the King, whose image appears in the framed print offered below)
7) A CANADIAN-FRAMED PRINT OF KING CHARLES ENGRAVING After the original by Van Dyke, the engraving from the original owned by the Earl of Pembroke, it is unusually but attractively framed, we believe in pine, ready to hang, with modern “Art handmade Plaque Canada” sticker on back. The entire object is app 10 x 13 inches, with the engraving proper about 5 ½ x 10 inches. Condition - engraving darkened by age but distinct; frame: excellent; print: slight water-stain foxing at bottom adds authenticity rather than detracting from the overall appearance. $50 8) BOOK: CHARLES & DIANA VISIT CANADA Vivid colour pictures, hardback, published by Collins, and covering many moments from the Royal couple’s 17-day first visit to Canada in 1983. Condition: excellent. $15 9-14) LIVING HISTORY: DRY-MOUNTED ROYAL PHOTOGRAPHS From the collection assembled by the federal government in Diamond Jubilee year, these are terrifically “usable” as, hard mounted without “frames” they are light in weight - and ready-to hang in your den, or child’s room, or to fill a wall with multiple pictures! All are app 10 x 14 inches b&w unless noted otherwise. We will advise you of the postage cost at time of your inquiry, as this varies considerably depending on your postal code. If anyone wishes to purchase all seven of these at a favourable price, please contact us immediately. 9. In colour: Prince Edward in his late teens, a broad smile on his face as he leans against an oak and relaxes on autumn leaves with his Labrador Retriever. $15 10. Front cover of Paris Match depicting The Queen returning in the Golden Coach from her Coronation, Orb and Sceptre displayed, and Prince Philip by her side. $20 11. Princess Elizabeth on the telephone in her office at Buckingham Palace, 1946. $15 12. In colour: The Good King, George VI of late, happy and beloved memory, wearing a tan jacket - a reflective portrait on the grounds of Buckingham Palace. $25 13. The Princesses Elizabeth & Margaret Rose, probably just after the war, looking ready to go out for an evening in lovely beaded formal dresses. $20 14. Our favorite of this tranche of pictures. Colour shot of the Royal Family, shortly after the War, in the Palace Gardens. The King, The Queen and the Princesses are seated on wicker chairs - with Elizabeth’s dog beside her. This happy family - “we four” - exemplifies the bequest of a happy, close family life that made our Queen such an extraordinary person. $30 15. Colour 3/4 length study of a beaming Princess Elizabeth, hands clasped in front, on her 19th birthday. $25 16. The shade of the Abdication not yet visible, this 1936 picture shows the future King and Queen as Duke & Duchess of York at the door of their Piccadilly residence, with a serious-looking Elizabeth holding her Mother’s forearm. $25

historical dramas, alternate universes, video game fandoms, nhl & the crown
hello!
I’m going to make this fairly short (or at least try to haaA). I am looking for 1-2 new rp partners! I work two jobs and have a pretty active lifestyle so please understand this is a hobby for me. My posting speed ranges from once every couple of days to once every week or so, but I'll always let you know when I'm busy or hitting roadblocks. Some of my stories have really slowed down so I'm looking to have a rp going that is at a pace of at least 1-2 replies every couple of weeks.
I love detailed plots and stories; crafting good posts is a huge part of why I love rping. I match/mirror my partner’s length and put a high amount of importance on compatibility as writers. Good grammar, punctuation, spelling is A Thing for me. I put 110% in. I write fully lit to novella style rps with my posts ranging from 900-1800 words average. If you want a partner that’s invested in writing together and all the joy that brings, I’m your person!
I am looking for original period piece/historical drama roleplays full of drama and angst, fallout related roleplays, roleplays centered on fictional NHL players, slice-of-life or modern romances, and a few more.
what do I write?
I can write f/m, m/m, and m/f pairings- doesn't really matter to me so long as the plot and characters are compelling. I love smut just as much as anyone but I need a good story and solid character development to go back on. I want to feel something when we write and I hope you do too! I don't have a ton of limits when it comes to kink etc aside from the basic ones, but generally each of the characters I write have varied and different interests and preferences. I'm interested in writing the following fandoms right now:
Transformers personified: Essentially, utilizing characters from the Transformers universe to make characters and stories based off of them/using them in a personified manner. We could depict the war as a political one, or with warring armies, or anything we wanted to do. I'm most familiar with Transformers Prime, and I would be really excited to talk this one over with you!
Disney personified: Similar to the idea above, we take stories/characters and springboard them into our own content and plots. Let's talk it out!
The Outer Worlds: Admittedly I haven't finished the game yet, but I would love to do some character and world building here. Canon characters could be brought in if needed.
Fallout: New Vegas: I can do OCs for this, or I can play several canon characters such as Arcade Gannon, The King, and Cass. Either way, I'd be more than happy to plot with you in this world. I'm also interested in playing out a story related to Fallout 4, where I can play Elder Maxson or Paladin Danse, or we can write OCs.
X-Men: Give me all the plots utilizing Jean Grey or Wolverine, those are my favorite canon characters to write. I can also write OCs. I would also love to play Wolverine against a Jean Grey. All in all, I am a happy camper with this one.
The Crown/British Monarchy: I have a niche interest in the British monarchy and figures related to it, specifically George VI, Elizabeth II. I'd love to take the concepts and maybe the figures and write out some stories, historically-based or not, that involve some of the character types, situations and challenges faced. This idea is really flexible and I'd love to do some world-building here!
Mafia 2: I can write a pretty decent Vito Scaletta and I'd love to write him against your OC. We can take the premise and play with it, maybe make a spinoff or a sequel, something like that.
The Man in the High Castle: I would love, love, love to write something set in this universe. We'd definitely have to do some worldbuilding here but I would love to figure something out based around this universe and the characters in it.
Right now I also have a huge interest in doing period pieces/setting slice-of-life stories in different historical settings. I'd really love to do some plotting together and come up with an intriguing original story. I would love to do stories with the backdrop of the first or second world war, the great depression, the turn of the century, etc etc. I think so many of my plot ideas would be much more interesting placed against different historical settings. I'm most familiar with 1900-1960s backdrops but I would love to explore earlier (little women, or pride and prejudice-esque) eras as well! Pleeease get @ me if you're interested in a healthy dose of history with whatever twists we can come up with :) Here are a few plots/prompts to get started:
**** (m/m) sugar daddy: My oc is a law student studying in your oc’s country in order to get their degree abroad. They’re from eastern Europe and uh. broke af. They settle into an arrangement with your oc where your oc agrees to ~pay him for his company~. We could take it anywhere- your oc could whisk mine off his feet and ‘save’ him or. Be toxic & trashy and make my oc’s life hell.
****(m/m) the guardian: Your oc is a newcomer to the NHL but is quickly making waves- think Connor McDavid style. He’s young and impressive, but mostly, impressionable. he starts to get battered around by both his teammates and opposing teams. After a few hard hits and fowl play within the game that have cost your oc bench and recovery time, the team’s coach calls in reinforcements to boost the team’s morale and serve as a protector to your oc. My oc is a player who hasn’t got the talent part but has got a huge heart. Not to mention… huge hands. Good for makin’ fists. Good for fightin’. My oc protects your oc during the games, coming to your oc’s aid, picking fights for your oc and protecting him on the ice. As such, the two players grow attached to one another.. perhaps too attached for the captain to be comfortable with. Possibilities for a love triangle and other complications, for sure
***(m/m) too good to be true: Our ocs start out in the WHL, both as promising wingers. Their good chemistry is vital to bringing back their team’s success. However, one of our ocs starts to get too attached to the other, and when an NHL draft separates them, one of our ocs is all too eager to cut contact and try to forget. The two excel in their NHL careers without one another, and end up on NHL teams with a history of deep rivalry. Occasionally, the gloves hit the ice, fueled by the tension of unresolved feelings and the pressure of the respective teams to keep up the rivalry. The two are reunited when they are both chosen to play nationally for the same team, and are forced to reconcile what they have both buried so deeply within them.
***(m/m) big money: These two ocs play for rival teams in the nhl. while their teams have a history of tension, our two ocs take it to the next level. Audiences are more excited to watch these two fight than they are to watch the game itself. There’s a market in the violence between these two, and a reputation to maintain on both ends. If the public found out that these two were secretly seeing one another, their careers would both be over.
My oc has serious commitment issues. They often go around leaving individuals after 4-5 dates, with little to no explanation of why. Your oc falls for mine, and is the first to confront my oc about their shitty habits.
Your oc is a huge fan of my oc’s hockey or political career. Your oc wins a contest to meet and have dinner with my oc. While my oc expects a boring night out, my oc is completely surprised by how well they hit it off with your oc.
My oc, your first oc and your second oc all grew up together. Your first oc has always been pining for my oc’s attention, and is thrilled when my oc and your first oc finally get together. They develop a long term relationship, but my oc knows it would devastate your first oc if they told them that they have been seeing your second oc for most of the relationship.
My oc and your oc are in an arranged marriage. My oc is actually a spy on your oc's national government. Espionage, reconnaissance, and betrayal abound.
My oc is royalty (think British monarchy) and yours is, absolutely not; either a reporter, a soldier, maybe a business person. My oc has taken interest in yours as a friend to keep them grounded... or as a thin veil for a romance that absolutely no one would approve of.
As for general OC ideas, here’s a list:
street racing, fast-and-furious-esque setting
small town canadiana or americana
fun, fluffy romance based modern settings
light worldbuilding - new to this but wanting to learn
WWI / WWII history based
something based around the Titanic (I know, so cheesy)
alternate history — I would love to work on doing some worldbuilding with you and creating some kind of retro-futuristic alt history IE fallout before the nukes dropped.
estate drama — something akin to Downton Abbey but with our own spin on it
honestly whatever you can pitch to me that isn’t high fantasy :)
I can expand on and work with any of these ideas, these are just topics. Whatever I do with you, I promise it’ll be fleshed out, with tons of opportunity for drama.
how do we get started?
Pleaaase send me an email at [email protected]; I can give you my discord if we hit it off. Please give me some of your thoughts/an idea of why/what you’d like to write with me! I can write over discord or email or both. We can sort out the brass tacks there and figure out if we’re a good match. :) Thanks for your time and I hope I hear from you!

Millions of individuals world wide watched the ceremony on tv, fortunately unaware it could usher in probably the most turbulent interval but of the Queen’s life. The Queen’s fortieth 12 months on the throne, 1992, marked her lowest second as three royal marriages fell aside. King George VI in Italy in 1944. (British Pathe)
Most important of all was the time he spent one-on-one with General Alexander, with whom he had many frank talks: “I got to know him very well & he told me a great deal on the military side about his generals.” Alexander lent him his caravan, and the King had lighting installed and added a small tent. He brought his own rubber bathtub, which he left behind for the general’s use. In Arezzo, a town that only nine days earlier had been occupied by the Germans, the King admired the “panorama of mountains to the north,” one of which looked like “several Lochnagars placed together.” As he sat in his bath, he took in “the view in all its glory on a most lovely clear evening at the same time as I was listening to our guns firing 6 miles off & the Grenadier Guards band was playing ‘The White Horse Inn.’ What could have been nicer.”

The future Queen Elizabeth II was born at 2:40am on April 21st, 1926. Complying with the ancient custom of ensuring a bogus baby swap had not occurred, the home secretary, Sir William Joynson-Hicks, was present in the Strathmore’s house at the time of the birth. At 4:00am, a courtier awakened the King and Queen with the news. “Such relief and joy,” Queen Mary wrote in her diary.
In an odd coincidence, the King and Queen gave a small luncheon that day for a group of royal relatives including Princess Alice of Battenberg - the mother of the infant’s future husband, four-year-old Prince Philip. But it was Chips Channon - shrewdly applying his knowledge of the many flaws of the Prince of Wales, still unmarried and immature at aged thirty-two - who won the prize for prescience. “I have a feeling the child will be Queen of England,” he wrote in his diary.

The two matters prominent in their minds turned out to be linked. Bertie and Elizabeth were desperate to extricate themselves from White Lodge and find a permanent home in London. They equally yearned for Elizabeth to get pregnant. In a letter to the Prince of Wales that August, Bertie confided, “I still long for one thing which you can guess, & so does she.”
That mission had likely already been accomplished by then. A month later, writing to Bertie at Balmoral, Elizabeth reported, “I am feeling much better now, tho’ the sight of wine simply turns me up! Isn’t it extraordinary? it will be a tragedy if I never recover my drinking powers”
In the middle of October, they shared the good news with the King and Queen and the Strathmores. Queen Mary conveyed their joy “that we may look forward to a direct descendant in the male line” and that “the country will be delighted when they are allowed to know.”

How a ‘future Queen in training’ is finding her voice
(Chris Jackson/Getty Images)
When a high-profile member of the Royal Family took her turn on a podcast the other day, listeners heard a voice that might have seemed unfamiliar.
Sure, Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, has had a prominent position in royal affairs since her marriage to Prince William in 2011. But she has rarely been interviewed for broadcast. So it came as something of a surprise when she popped up behind the mic for the
Happy Mum, Happy Baby
podcast in the U.K.
But there Kate was, chatting easily with the podcast host for half an hour or so about something that has become a passion for her — early child development. The mother of three sprinkled the podcast with a few personal details — that she tried
hypnobirthing
, that she wasn’t “the happiest of pregnant people.”
As breezy as the conversation may have seemed, it also reflected a significant evolution Kate has made since joining the Royal Family.
“In her recent podcast, the Duchess of Cambridge showed in a variety of ways how much she has raised her game since she married Prince William nearly a decade ago,” royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith said via email.
“She has significantly improved her skill at public speaking, which at the beginning was an ordeal to her.”
She is also showing confidence that comes from years of studying an issue that is — and will be — a major focus for her, said Bedell Smith.
“And she is willing to reveal personal details in an effort to help other new mothers, but stopping shy of over-sharing. In this way, she is being ‘modern’ without being self-consciously ‘progressive.’"
The podcast was only one of several high-profile outings for Kate over the past few weeks, and has drawn inevitable speculation about the degree to which she may be stepping up as the Royal Family deals with the departure of Prince Harry and Meghan.
“Although Kate's high-profile engagements over the past weeks have been planned months in advance, they have highlighted her new level of visibility and engagement that the media obsession with Harry and Meghan has tended to overshadow,” said Bedell Smith.
“With Meghan's departure from official royal duties, Kate can go about her business without the risk of her sister-in-law trying to steal her thunder.”
Kate is reticent by nature, Bedell Smith said, and that gives her a modesty that has “considerable appeal” for the public.
“She has a natural ability to combine accessibility and dignity with a royal mystique, which is very difficult to pull off.”
For the past several months, there have been various headlines around the same emerging theme — that Kate is stepping up her game, hitting her stride, coming into her own.
Last weekend, the Daily Telegraph was reporting how the “Duchess of Cambridge finds her voice as a down-to-earth mother of three.”
As much as the more prominent role is an evolution for Kate, she is treading relatively safe ground. Offering support for parents and caregivers and promoting the importance of early childhood development carry a relatively low risk of controversy.
And those looking for shocking revelations out of her podcast will still be looking.
“To be quite honest, it was quite bland,” public relations expert Mark Borkowski said in an interview from London. “There was nothing much in it.”
And maybe in some ways, that’s not a surprise.
Kate is fully aware she is a “future Queen in training,” Bedell Smith said.
“With the guidance of her husband, the Queen, Prince Charles and expert advisers, [Kate] fully understands that hers is a lifetime commitment that calls for restraint and self-discipline. She knows what she is expected to do, and she has embraced her duties wholeheartedly, not only with enthusiasm, but with an evident sense of joy.”
The Queen, Bedell Smith said, had high hopes for Kate from the moment she entered the scene.
“She clearly is fulfilling those hopes today.”
What can they do?
More than a month after their seismic announcement to go their own way, more details have emerged about how Prince Harry and Meghan will actually leave the upper echelons of the Royal Family. After returning from Canada to the U.K. for a flurry of engagements over the next couple of weeks, they will officially end their royal duties on March 31. Less clear, however, is how they will forge their own path as they seek financial independence and work on building their brand. In the absence of official information, speculation runs rampant, particularly as reports emerge of various meetings, appearances or alliances they may be striking in the U.S. There was an appearance at an exclusive JP Morgan event in Miami, where there were several other high-profile celebrities in attendance. Harry may also be in discussion with investment bank Goldman Sachs about possibly giving a talk on mental health and the military. What they’re doing isn’t really a surprise, suggests Borkowski. “They’re damned if they do, they’re damned if they don’t. It’s a very difficult road they have to navigate now. They do have to achieve some economic independence,” he said. “If you’re going to set out on this journey and you’re going to change the world, set up a foundation, create a movement … you’ve got to raise a lot of money. You’ve also got to start working in rooms of huge influence.” In the U.K., there has been considerable questioning from some media quarters about the alliances they appear to be trying to forge. Some of it has been quite critical. “As much as the media want to stir up the negativity, what are they meant to do? Really, what are they meant to do?” Borkowski said. And those who hear them speak at engagements might find themselves supporting the causes Harry and Meghan are trying to promote. “Arguably, they’re in rooms where they might change conversations, attitudes …. and make [those listening] think about some issues that are close to their hearts,” said Borkowski. “They have a vision. They have a brand and they have to work with people who can make that brand work.” But they may have to tweak — or significantly change — how that brand is developed. Buckingham Palace is reviewing their use of the label “Sussex Royal,” with the “Royal” element of that potentially causing concern. The BBC reported that their spokesperson said the use of that word is under discussion, and an announcement on that would come along with the launch of Harry and Meghan’s new non-profit organization.
The pain — and tolerance — of royal divorce
The pain — and tolerance — of royal divorce
(Stefan Rousseau/The Associated Press)
Royal departures of a rather different nature are also unfolding, with the divorces of two family members announced in short order over the past few days.
The Queen’s eldest grandson, Peter Phillips, is splitting from his Canadian wife, Autumn Kelly. Also divorcing are the Queen’s nephew, David, Earl of Snowden, and his wife, Serena Stanhope.
Since the splits became public, there has been much speculation about how Elizabeth feels about it all.
“Just as the Queen was distressed by the divorces of three of her children, it is likely that the latest announcements have pained her equally,” said Bedell Smith, author of Elizabeth the Queen: The Life of a Modern Monarch.
“But her attitude has become more tolerant, recognizing many marriages don't work out for any number of reasons that are impossible for outsiders to fully understand.”
It wasn’t always that way.
Bedell Smith looks back to a speech Elizabeth made in 1949, while still a princess, when she condemned divorce for creating “some of the darkest evils in our society today.”
That was a result of a number of factors, including the Church of England rules of divorce, the view of the British establishment of the day and her family’s “revulsion over the abdication of her uncle, King Edward VIII, to abandon his sovereign duty to marry a twice-divorced woman — a major crisis that threatened the foundations of the monarchy,” said Bedell Smith.
Other divorces rocked the family, including those of the current Earl Snowden’s parents, Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones, and three of the Queen’s four children: Charles, Anne and Andrew.
“It was only after the Anglican divorce rules were relaxed that the Queen could accept the remarriage of Prince Charles to divorced Camilla Parker Bowles,” said Bedell Smith.
The current divorces appear to be amicable, and Bedell Smith thinks that must have at least offered “some consolation” for Elizabeth.
“With divorces today, one can only hope for civilized arrangements and an absence of acrimony and publicized court battles — both of which may have been averted with the Phillips and Snowden marriages,” said Bedell Smith.
“In both cases, the negotiations were complete, and the Queen fully informed, before the announcements were made to the public.”
Royally quotable
"With each story that is told, the taboo around domestic abuse weakens and the silence that surrounds it is broken, so other sufferers can know that there is hope for them and they are not alone."

marking the 15th anniversary of a domestic abuse charity.
Home renovations, palace-style
During a home renovation, saving the wallpaper isn’t usually a priority.
But when the home is Buckingham Palace, and the wallpaper is an early 19th- century Chinese version that came from King George VI’s Brighton Pavilion, that’s exactly what will happen.
A
video posted on YouTube
and Twitter by the Royal Family takes viewers into the east wing of the palace, revealing some of the painstaking work being done to conserve the wallpaper that will return to the Yellow Drawing Room.

dedicated, literate & long-term rps :)
Hello! I'm going to make this fairly short (or at least try to haaA). I am looking for 1-2 new rp partners! I work two jobs and have a pretty active lifestyle so please understand this is a hobby for me. My posting speed ranges from once every couple of days to once every week or so, but I'll always let you know when I'm busy or hitting roadblocks. I am almost always available ooc though, esp through discord. I am in my mid-twenties and prefer my partners to be 23+.
I love detailed plots and stories; crafting good posts is a huge part of why I love rping. I match/mirror my partner’s length and put a high amount of importance on compatibility as writers. Good grammar, punctuation, spelling is A Thing for me. I put 110% in. I write fully lit to novella style rps, usually 800-1300 words per reply. If you want a partner that’s invested in writing together and all the joy that brings, I’m your person!
I am looking for original period piece/historical drama roleplays full of drama and angst, fallout related roleplays, roleplays centered on fictional NHL players, and a few more.
what do I write?
I can write f/m and m/m pairings- doesn't really matter to me so long as the plot and characters are compelling.
I would also love to play Wolverine against Jean Grey.
OC superheroes
street racing, fast-and-furious-esque setting
small town canadiana or americana
fun, fluffy romance based modern settings
light worldbuilding - new to this but wanting to learn
WWI / WWII history based
something based around the Titanic (I know, so cheesy)
alternate history — I would love to work on doing some worldbuilding with you and creating some kind of retro-futuristic alt history IE fallout before the nukes dropped.
honestly whatever you can pitch to me that isn’t high fantasy :)
I can expand on and work with any of these ideas, these are just topics. Whatever I do with you, I promise it’ll be fleshed out, with tons of opportunity for drama.
how do we get started?
Pleaaase send me an email at [email protected] or add me on discord at emmy/#5091 ! I will get back to you asap, but please give me some of your thoughts/an idea of why/what you’d like to write with me! I can write over discord or email or both. We can sort out the brass tacks there and figure out if we’re a good match. :) Thanks for your time and I hope I hear from you!
