I recently watched Dunkirk and this is my incorrect characters interpretation :3

Tell me you have never known and loved someone with PTSD without telling me you have never known and loved someone with ptsd.

I can tell you right now, that the Shivering Soldier was in that moment not aware that George (likely Dawsone too) was anything other than an enemy combatant attacking him from behind. IF he was aware of anything at all. it is entirely likely that his military training kicked in and he didn't even notice George was knocked at all until the Dawson's reacted to his falling down the stairs.

I get that and I'm genuinely not trying to pick a fight. I just don't think that "knowing you're responsible" is the same as actively taking accountability, regardless of mental capacity. And Mr. Dawson and Peter forgive him but that's not their child or brother--and I guarantee if you had lost a family member due to someone's negligence/issues you would feel differently. Also, grief is a complex and drawn out process, we just witnessed the initial stage in dunkirk. We didn't have an (1/2)

an opportunity to see the cycle of grief play out in Peter’s and George’s family lives. I know it’s uncomfortable to confront but sometimes, but part of doing bad things means that people won’t like you or will avoid you, and that isn’t unfair or unreasonable. Part of accountability is accepting the social consequences. Obviously the conflation to Cillian as a person is inappropriate, but I don’t think it’s wrong or unfair that the general opinion of shivering soldier is negative. (2/2) 

Okay I’m sorry but I find it very hard to believe that you’re “genuinely not trying to pick a fight” when you finished your ask chain with “I don’t think it’s wrong or unfair that the general opinion of Shivering Soldier is negative.”

We don’t get to see whether he takes accountability because the movie ends before such an opportunity arises. The last we see him, he turns towards Peter and presumably sees the soldiers carrying out George’s body on a stretcher, so he knows that George is dead. And I think that knowing he is responsible, showing obvious remorse, and only speaking to ask if George is okay are good starts. He knows it is his fault. If he didn’t accept responsibility, then it would probably be harder to hold him accountable. And if you go back to my last paragraph in response to your first ask, you will see that I listed multiple ways in which he could easily be held accountable, especially given the social and historical context of early 1940s England.

No, we don’t know how the Mills family will react, and whether they decide to forgive Shivering Soldier is entirely up to them. I can’t make that decision for them, and I won’t. However, the movie seems to imply that George doesn’t have the greatest relationship with his parents. He joined Peter and Mr. Dawson in part because he wanted to prove himself to his parents. That might not change how his parents react to the news of his death, but it’s still worth thinking about.

You talk about accepting social consequences as if having PTSD in the early 1940s when nobody understood anything about it doesn’t have social consequences in and of itself. He is already facing social consequences for being shell-shocked. Remember when George asks Mr. Dawson if Shivering Soldier is a coward? There’s your social consequence. And he will face even more social consequences now that he has the weight of a dead person on his conscience.

It’s not wrong or unfair for people to generally hate him? Bullshit. I don’t expect everyone to love him, and I know I can’t force people to love him, but I don’t think I’m being too demanding when I ask people to stop saying ableist things about him and stop saying nasty things about Cillian Murphy.

Cillian said in some interviews during the Dunkirk press tour that he approached his character without judgment, pointing out that it’s impossible to know how any of us would respond if we had to live through whatever trauma his character lived through. He isn’t saying that to make excuses but to make his character human. He talks about that in pretty good detail in this interview.

Also, Mr. Dawson countered George’s question about Shivering Solider being a coward not just by saying that he’s shell-shocked but by saying that he is not himself. War is hell. War puts people into incredibly high-stress situations, and we cannot fully understand what it is like to be in those situations. Again, that doesn’t change what happened, but it’s bullshit that the fandom decides that they know everything about Shivering Soldier’s character based on one thing that happened when he was clearly in a bad state.

Shivering Soldier is not exactly an individual character. He is also meant to represent the thousands of soldiers that experienced shell shock during World War II, as Cillian Murphy explains in this interview (he also talks about his preparation for the role) and this interview to a lesser extent. So when you say that “it’s not wrong or unfair” for the fandom at large to dislike him, you’re kind of saying that it’s understandable for people to hate people that have PTSD. I know that’s not your exact point, but given that he represents a large group of people and that his character is meant to demonstrate the psychological toll of traumatic events, that’s kind of what you’re saying.

This is not a one-dimensional thing, and I don’t like that the fandom has simplified it into “well this guy is just an irreedemable asshole so I’ll say nasty things about both him and the actor that played him.”
