Despite our best efforts, the names on our list are only those who had the privilege of recognition, the fortune of discovery, or the extraordinary courage to leave indelible proof of their true selves for us to mourn. So many unknown and uncounted people remain that even years from now we will learn the names of people in our community who died this year without the recognition they deserved.

Goddess Hel, divine hostess whose arms lovingly embrace all guests, Watch over those who have crossed your gates against their will. Care for those taken from us and bless them with tranquil rest.
Godx Loki, story-teller and guardian of outcasts, Give words to our sorrow so that we may honor their memories. Breathe air into our lungs so we may bellow our love over hatred.
Goddess Hel, cherisher of life and daughter of metamorphosis, Bestow in their loved ones moments of laughter, healing, and peace. May their names echo not just in sorrow but in smiling remembrance.
Godx Loki, change-bringer and waker of revolution, Spark the flames of unrelenting authenticity within us. Stoke the ember of truth until the hateful are blinded by its light.
Under the cut are the siblings, youth, and elders whose lives were taken due to hatred, bigotry, and fear. I understand it is incredibly triggering, but I believe we owe it to them to read their names.
We love you. We are unendingly sorry and we will never stop fighting until the hatred that stole you from this life has been extinguished. We love you so much.

Just saw someone shitting on TSOA yet again (no surprises there) about the fact that Achilles is "canonically" chestnut-haired, and that the fact that he's portrayed as a blonde must be TSOA's fault because, of course, every inaccuracy or misconception about the Iliad or Patrochilles in popular culture can be traced back to TSOA, right? And of course let's ignore the fact that many other popular adaptations like, oh, I don't know, TROY THE MOVIE which was filmed 7 years before TSOA portrays Achilles as a blonde, and that many, many artists several centuries before TSOA was written imagined him as a blonde, starting from the Romans and going aaaaaall the way to the 18th and 19th century to the present day, but let's ignore all of that for a minute, shall we?
The word used to describe Achilles in the Iliad is xanthos, which does not exactly translate as chestnut! It does not exactly translate to any colour word we have in the English language, or probably most modern languages in fact!! Greeks used certain words to describe groups of colours, so xanthos could mean anything from yellow to gold to brown, even ruddy, reddish brown or reddish gold. Translators over the years have used a number of different words to describe Achilles' hair, here are some examples from the translations I have on hand and a couple I searched for this purpose:
George Chapman (1611): yellow
John Dryden (1700): yellow
Alexander Pope (1743): golden
Samuel Butler (1898): yellow
Richard Lattimore (1951): fair
Kazantzakis-Kakridis (1955): blonde
Robert Fagles (1990): fiery
Stanley Lombardo (1997): sandy
Barry B. Powell (2013): light-coloured
Caroline Alexander (2016): tawny
Emily Wilson (2023): chestnut
So, as you can see, there have been many different variations over the years, and none of them are either 100% right or wrong! I don't know what each translator had in mind when they chose to translate xanthos the way they did, what their precise reasoning was, but what we do know is that the word has been used to describe a wealth of different shades so I'm guessing there's a degree of personal interpretation or preference at play here.
And that's all I have to say about that for the moment! Peace out ✌️
#the way some people keep finding new and worse ways to hate on that book istg#like the level of misinformation in this fandom is just! wow#like hate on it all you want but at least.... idk do your research first#ANYWAY#normally i would scroll on but i couldn't resist talking about achilles' hair so here we are#tagamemnon#achilles#fandom critical

A while ago I floated the idea of Game of Thrones as a schlocky 80s sword-and-sorcery movie. Well, I've been working on my cast.
Daneyris Targarean: Linnea Quigley
Robert Barratheon: Cameron Mitchell
Ned Stark: David Carradine
Catelyn Stark: Sybil Danning
Jon Snow: John Terry
Robb Stark: Reb Brown
Sansa Stark: Monique Gabrielle
Tywin Lannister: Jack Palance
Tyrion Lannister: Peter O'Farrell
Cersei Lannister: Lana Clarkson
Jaime Lannister: John Allen Nelson
Joffrey Baratheon: Ian Serra
Sandor Clegane: One of the Barbarian Brothers
Gregor Clegane: The other Barbarian Brother
Arya, Bran, Rickon, Tommen, etc.: Weird-looking children dubbed by forty-year-old women
Margaery Tyrell: Tawny Kitaen
Loras Tyrell: Miles O'Keefe
Renly Baratheon: Rick Hill
Petyr Baelish: Richard Lynch
Theon Greyjoy: David Hess
Ramsay Bolton: Giovanni Lombardo Radice
Melisandre: Laura Gemser
Davos Seaworth: Christopher George
Brienne of Tarth: Cynthia Rothrock
That's all I can think of. I'm open to any suggestions. Just remember that if it's an at-all-prominent actor, you have to justify why this person is at the utter nadir of their career.

Tallulah Bankhead - The Wild Child
Tallulah Brockman Bankhead (born in Huntsville, Alabama on January 31, 1902) was an American actress, primarily of the stage, but has also appeared in several prominent films, including an award-winning performance in Alfred Hitchcock's Lifeboat (1944). Known as "The Wild Child," her penchant for living life on her own terms, defying societal conventions and hard partying sometimes preceded her talent.
Bankhead was a member of the Bankhead and Brockman family, a prominent Alabama Democratic political family with Irish roots. Her grandfather and her uncle were U.S. senators, and her father was Speaker of the House of Representatives. She was mostly raised in the family estate named "Sunset" in Jasper, Alabama.
Discovering at an early age that theatrics gained her the attention she desired, she wanted to be a performer. Thus, at 15, she submitted her photo to Picture Play, which was conducting a contest, and was awarded a trip to New York plus a movie part based on their photographs. She soon realized her place was on stage rather than screen. After several years in Broadway, Bankhead moved to London, where she found fame and critical acclaim in the West End.
In 1931, under contract to Paramount Pictures she returned to the U.S. and played in a series of roles as a femme fatale in films in films like George Cukor's Tarnished Lady (1931).
Going back to Broadway, Bankhead worked steadily in a series of plays, including brilliant portrayals of Regina Giddens in Lillian Hellman's The Little Foxes (1939) and Sabina in Thornton Wilder's The Skin of Our Teeth (1942). Because of her continued success, she was able to command 10 percent of the gross of the play and was billed larger than any other actor in the cast. She also continued to appear in a handful of films, TV shows, and radio shows. Though Tallulah Bankhead's career slowed in the mid-1950s, she never faded from the public eye.
A long time smoker, she died in Manhattan at age 66 due to pleural double pneumonia.
Legacy:
Won the Variety Award for Best Actress of the Year twice: The Little Foxes (1939) and The Skin of Our Teeth (1942)
Won the New York Drama Critics Award for Best Actress in a Production for The Skin of Our Teeth (1942)
Won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress for Lifeboat (1944)
Nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for Midgie Purvis (1961)
Has had a cocktail at the Rivoli Bar in the Ritz London called "The Tallulah," which is served in Christian Louboutin stiletto
Is the first white woman to be featured on the cover of Ebony magazine
Is one of the very few film actresses and the only stage actress to have a cover on both Time and Life
Honored as one of the 10 most remarkable women in London in 1928
Served as inspiration for the character Margo Channing in All About Eve (1950) and Cruella De Vil in Walt Disney Pictures' One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961)
Is one of the original inductees in the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1972
Inducted in the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame in 1981
Is the main character of Looped, a Broadway play by New York writer Matthew Lombardo, which premiered in 2007
Has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6141 Hollywood Blvd for motion picture

On or about February 15, 1932, George Burns and Gracie Allen debuted as regulars on CBS Radio’s "The Guy Lombardo Show" aka “The General Cigar Show”. The Royal Canadians and George and Gracie split the half hour, which quickly became a top 10 show.

I need band recs with good drums that stand out
George Kollias | Invictus
What is there to say other than how dominant he is? On his solo record he performs all instruments as well. Quite a boon.
Septicflesh | A Great Mass
This album has it all. Blasts, Rhythm, half counts and doom-like passages. Krimh, although not the drummer on the album, has since taken up the role for the band and has playthroughs on his youtube channel that are incredible to watch.
Hate Eternal | King of All Kings/I, Monarch
Derek Roddy in his absolute prime. He gets so much resonance out of his snare and those albums highlight how sick he is.
Alice in Chains | Dirt
Sean Kinney doesn't get enough praise. Listen to No Excuses and that rhythm, the timbre. It's efficacy is in it's simplicity but trying to maintain that groove for extended periods will have you out of time and out of sorts. He's fantastic and is essential to the bands collaborative sound.
Secrets of the Moon | Privilegivm
This album is just fantastic for drumming. The mix highlights the lows of the floor tom and bass so well. Big fan, underrated gem.
Lamb of God | Ashes of the Wake
Laugh all you want at this rec. Chris Adler is phenomenal and this album came out when I was a kid glued to my drum kit. Groove. Groove. Groove. Such a sick album with unforgettable drum patterns still burnt into my brain and muscle memory.
Slayer | Seasons in the Abyss/South of Heaven/Reign in Blood.
Dave Lombardo is literally the reason I'm a metalhead. I was learning drums and the classic rock book I was learning from with my drum teacher featured patterns in notation from drummers like Dave, Bonham, Peart etc. I think the Seasons album showcases how diverse he can be aside from just being fast as hell. The man has quite the illustrious career behind the kit.
Iron Maiden | Powerslave/The Number of the Beast
Nicko Mcbrain! Groove, melody, fills that highlight the guitar work of Adrian and Dave, the works. I promise you re-listening to old school maiden will have you finding a new-found appreciation for his drum work.
Death | Symbolic/ Individual Thought Patterns
Gene 'The Atomic Clock' Hoglan. What a fucking machine. Both albums are essential masterpieces. Crystal Mountain, with the dual cymbal work, *chef kiss*.
Obituary | Cause of Death
This defined the genre of Death Metal for me. The drumming is so iconic in it's sound and production. I've heard Donald Tardy doesn't like it though?
Nordjevel | Nordjevel
Dominator just going ballistic behind the kit. That's all. That's the rec.

Franklin Pierce – National Anthems, Patriotic, Classical.
James Buchanan – Polka and National Anthems? (Don’t take that accurately, he’s still a old fart so he might be into classical too.)

Andrew Johnson – Children’s voices…and war/patriotic.
Ulysses S. Grant – Marine Bands and folk. +Did not enjoy military music!

Besides Eliot, were there any prominent writers or critics who were Shakespeare haters?
Yes. Enlightenment-era writers, with their neoclassical aesthetics, took issue with his perceived irrationalism: Voltaire is the most famous example, but even Samuel Johnson in England made a number of sharply critical remarks in his own work on the plays. The Romantics were mostly "pro," but the belatedly neoclassical Byron also dismissed Shakespeare as a vapid plagiarist in his letters, inferior in sublimity to Milton. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the biggest names are Tolstoy, Shaw, and Wittgenstein. All three had some version of the same underlying complaint: his work is unrealistic, sensationalist, and puts forth no coherent, edifying worldview. It's not that different from Eliot's complaint; Pound, too, preferred Chaucer as closer to political and social realities.
In all these cases, we see a reaction against the Romantics, who most valued Shakespeare for his imaginative freedom and "negative capability." (I wrote about some of the anti-Romantic critique here, drawing on George Steiner's eloquent, summative bard-skeptical essay "A Reading Against Shakespeare," collected in No Passion Spent.) I've also suggested—in one of my Invisible College lectures—that Joyce is an undercover Shakespeare hater on more political grounds, anticipating feminist, Marxist, and postcolonial critiques.
I believe those are the biggest names; as I've said elsewhere, the list of Shakespeare haters is as distinguished as the list of anti-Stratfordians, but the Shakespeare haters are far more persuasive, precisely because they're hating the man from Stratford in all his proto-bourgeois ingloriousness. I'm a Shakespeare lover myself, and indifferent to the political critique, but there's something to the argument that much of his work suffers for its lack of metaphysics, of ultimate things, something that, in some moods, can make Dante or Dostoevsky feel more profound. Steiner writes a stirring passage in this vein near the end of his aforementioned essay:
Are there specific gravities of art and literature, of our experience of and response to art and literature, which arise from the felt, indeed declared pressure on art and literature of the presence or absence (in many cases, such as Dostoevsky's or Kafka's, absence is a more radical possibility of presence) of God? The theological-metaphysical enactment of what is gravest and most constant in human questioning, of that which lies, or may lie, on the other side of language, gives to certain texts an indispensable vulnerability and stature. The anguished patience of such questioning comes to possess us in the Oresteia; in Sophocles' Oedipus, Antigone, and Oedipus at Colonus; it presses on us, almost unbearably, in Euripides' Bacchae. We hear it in Marco Lombardo's voice out of the purging smoke in Purgatorio XVI; in Ivan Karamazov's prosecution of God; in the parables of Kafka. There is a very real sense in which Shakespeare does know and say everything; does he know and say anything else?
I'm not sure this is true of King Lear or The Winter's Tale or The Tempest, but, since even these seem pagan-occult rather than concerned with the Platonic or Abrahamic God Steiner is so preoccupied by, I accept his general point.
Maybe artists criticize each other better than actual critics can, because they can in criticizing each other complete each other. Steiner, skeptical of American literature, does not mention Melville, who thought Shakespeare wrote in the fetters of his pre-American and censorious era. Therefore in Moby-Dick Melville might be said to have brought Shakespeare into what the bard had been forced to avoid: a confrontation with God.

Good capture of Halloween! This was filmed on the aisle so you can see some people getting up and walking around at times. LOTS of latecomers during ready set I had to get up to let people into the row, so there is no video there. The guy in front of me wouldn't stop moving so his head can come in and out of frame at times but it's always worked around.

favourite odyssey translation?
Ooooooh, I feel like I gushed pretty hard about Emily Wilson's translation when it came out and to be honest I'm still riding that high.
The translations of The Odyssey that I've read were by Robert Fagles, Walter Shewring, and Emily Wilson. The standard advice is to recommend either Fagles or Fitzgerald but I'm a big Wilson girlie.
I made a few posts about this across various platforms at the time. I remember thinking that Wilson's paying ode to Homer's rhythm and musicality by way of iambic pentameter felt like a mistake. Dactylic hexameter has a markedly different rhythm and it takes some stretching of the themes to call The Odyssey a romantic poem. But translation is hard, and this choice doesn't originate with Wilson. George Chapman gave the first complete translation of The Odyssey into English in 1615 and that was written in iambic pentameter too. I expect there is something untranslatable about the musicality of the iamb in English and perhaps untranslatable in the same or a similar way as the dactyl in Classical Greek.
Fagles uses a five beat line but it's loose where Wilson is strict. The effect is marked. Shewring doesn't write in verse at all, just prose, and that's fine, it's a fairly literal translation and it makes for a good enough read. But still. Go with Wilson.
There are an overwhelming number of translations out there though, and I haven't read most of them. Thomas Hobbes wrote a translation, (yes that Thomas Hobbes!) in 1675, that starts:
Tell me, O Muse, th’ adventures of the man That having sack’d the sacred town of Troy,
Which neatly side-steps the translating of πολύτροπον that has caused so much controversy. And, based on this opening, I'm not expecting it to be too accurate to the original, or all that compelling in its verse, but it is a neat little historical artefact.
I think I'd be interested in reading the Lombardo translation based soley on the impact it seems to have made on Nabakov. The first line is traditionally translated as, "Tell me, Muse" or "Sing to me/ Sing in me, Muse" but Lombardo translates it "Speak, Memory" which is the same title Nabakov chose for his memoir.
Anyway, yeah, I think there are a bunch of really good options to go with. My favourite is Emily Wilson.
But also, there are some really good interpretations of The Odyssey out there too. I want to give a mention to Epic! The Musical. Which is the project of Jorge Rivera-Herrans to turn The Odyssey into a musical, and it kind of slaps. The whole community around it are also offering really compelling takes. For example, this animated music video for one of his songs:
youtube
has my favourite depiction of Polyphemus that I think I've ever seen.
I also want to mention that Stephen Fry is expected to release a re-telling of The Odyssey later this year! Late September/ early October, and based on his previous re-tellings of the greek myths, I'm expecting it to be really good.
Lots happening in The Odyssey fandom of late.
