Scared Stiff

Despite some suspenseful moments, the film failed to leave a lasting impression, with practical effects adding authenticity and Carmen Miranda's performances standing out.

hiiiii everyone im going to make you look at art <3 okay <3

first up we got two photos from august sander's people of the twentieth century, a decades long project he never finished aimed at identifying and organizing the "types" of people in early twentieth century germany. in photos for this project he usually identified people along socio-economic and geographic lines. on the left we have officer, world war i, cologne (1914) and on the right we have boxers, cologne (1928). museum had a bunch of sander on display and they paired it with the shortcut to the systematic life: superficial life (2002) by tsui kuang-yu, which is outside the scope of this post but super interesting so i encourage everyone to look it up lol

up next: the junkers officer (1934) by george grosz, another artist associated with neue sachlichkeit/new objectivity. im not well versed in german art but recently i have been so intrigued by leftist art of the weimar republic and it felt simply serendipitous. unfortunately by the time i saw this the museum was closing in 15 minutes so i had to rush out </3 SAD

this is air war (1944) by ralston crawford. first time i heard of this artist! during wwii he served as chief of the visual presentation unit of the weather division of the army air corps in washington dc and southeast asia.

negro soldier (1945) by robert smullyan sloan. sloan was drafted in 43 and illustrated army educational materials and posters for war bonds. the wall label says the title was given by the artist, which makes me think sloan didn't personally know this guy, which makes me very curious about the circumstances of its production. no name is given to the sitter, but he served in the european-african-middle eastern campaign in the army and was awarded a good conduct medal. sloan has a drawing at the met (station hospital [1943-44] ), but unfortunately i can't find much else about him online that might help contextualize this painting.

i think it pairs really well with this horace pippin from 1943 called mr. prejudice. pippin served in wwi with the harlem hellfighters, and the soldier at center might be a self portrait. he has a pretty good amount of paintings about the war actually -- i normally associate him with landscapes for some reason, though i think thats just because the pippin at my local art museum is a landscape lmao. his illustrated war journals are digitized at the archives of american art if you want to check it out!

People still thinking the president or any other single world leader has any say on the sway of the economy and the price of things is wild. Trump becoming president again won't change inflation or any of that, and he's a clown for thinking he can, just as much as he is for anything else that clumsily tumbles out of his mouth from his syphilitic brain.

Three years ago, Joe Biden spoke onstage at a think tank event, opining on wealth in America. “I love Bernie, but I’m not Bernie Sanders. I don’t think 500 billionaires are the reason why we’re in trouble,” he explained. “The folks at the top aren’t bad guys. I get in trouble in my party when I say wealthy Americans are just as patriotic as poor folks. I’ve found no distinction.”

And, based on who they supported during the 2020 election, billionaires don’t think Joe Biden is such a bad guy, either. About 25% of America’s billionaires donated to his election efforts, either directly or through a spouse, according to an analysis of records filed with the Federal Election Commission. By contrast, Donald Trump received money from only 14% of American billionaires.

The 230 Biden backers include the founders of companies like Patagonia, DoorDash and Netflix, Democratic megadonors like George Soros and Henry Laufer, as well as billionaire members of some of the country’s richest families like the Waltons, the Pritzkers and the Lauders. Broadly, they tended to hail from the coasts. More than one third live in California. Another 27% are based in New York. It makes sense, then, that about a quarter of them got rich in tech and a third made their fortunes in finance. On average, the billionaires gave about $170,000 to the Biden campaign and its joint-fundraising committees, which split their receipts with the Democratic Party.

Mike Bloomberg never donated directly to Biden’s campaign, but he threw $100 million into super-PACs supporting the Democratic nominee. ___________________________________________

Covid messed a bunch of stuff up the economy was one of the bigger things for sure, right up till then things were starting to look like they were going to pick up big time for us over here.

Successful renegotiation of NAFTA that looked to put more money in everyone's pockets especially Mexican citizens in Mexico because of the various worker protections baked into the agreement.

Had a good trade deal with China ready to go and both sides were on board, that one would have favored us here in a lot of places too, we had some pretty good leverage at the time that helped.

Not sure if he managed to get NATO countries to start paying their fair share or not, but he did try.

President can only do so much it's true, it takes two to tango so the nations we're trying to set up trade deals with need to play ball as well, that and the congressional rubber stamp.

Guy made some bad moves too, printing trillions of dollars was not a good plan for one, but that's not the point really.

Point is that the president as the head of the executive branch has a lot to say about the economic future of the nation.

Another point is ya I agree, giant douche or turd sandwich.

I won't vote for either, I'll try and find someone I can agree with on the majority of issues so long as they don't cross any of my red lines.

Mary I's Fight For The Throne

15th July - Mary wins a fleet

At daybreak, Henry Jerningham, John Tyrrell and Edward Glemham go to inspect the ships in the haven. The crew ask Jerningham "what he would have, and whether he would have their captains or no; and he said yeah, mary. Said they " Ye shall have them, or else we shall throw them to the bottom of the sea." The captains, seeing this perplexity, said forthwith they would serve queen Mary gladly." 1

Jerningham takes Richard Brooke, the squadron's commander, back to Framlingham castle, where they "bring news of this happy and unexpected arrival to the queen." 2 The last ship, The Greyhound, still remains in Lowestoft, but for now they focus on bringing the artillery and weapons from the rest to Framlingham.

Tyrrell and Glemham also reveal to Mary that Lord Wentworth has submitted, telling the pair that "although he had pledged his fealty to Jane by the obligation of his oath, his inner conscience constantly proclaimed that Mary had a greater right to the throne, so that he would pay no more heed to that obligation but set it aside and join his true sovereign with all speed." 3

Keep that close which thou hast; the world is dangerous. The great devil, Dudley, ruleth; (duke, I should have said) : well, let that pass, seeing it is out, but I trust he shall not long. 12

The Imperial ambassadors are "being watched so closely to see whether we do what the Council prohibited that we are unable to negotiate as freely as we could wish or attempt certain useful expedient." 13

Members of the Privy Council visit the Imperial ambassadors again, to ask them to decide whether they want to stay or not "for if we did wish to remain our persons should be secure and my Lords would do their best for us. If we wished to depart they would give us an escort to conduct us safely out of the kingdom." 14 They decide to leave town on the 20th, slowly making their way to Dover hoping to hear of news regarding Mary and Northumberland.
