Rating books by their huggableness
I’m a book hugger. Whenever I’m upset, I will hug the nearest book. Why? For one, it is more socially acceptable to bring a book to school than your favorite teddy bear or baby doll. Also, there are a surprising number of people who aren’t willing to give hugs to those in need, so hugging books can help in case of hugging emergency! In my experience, some books are more huggable than others, and…

For The Atlantic’s January/February 2024 issue, 24 contributors consider what Donald Trump could do if he were to return to the White House.
Just the summary page is a hilarious parade of catastrophizing. First, the editor's note:
• A WARNING, By Jeffrey Goldberg
America survived the first Trump term, though not without sustaining serious damage. A second term, if there is one, will be much worse.
Then the rest:
• THE DANGER AHEAD, By David Frum
If Donald Trump returns to the White House, he’d bring a better understanding of the system’s vulnerabilities, more willing enablers, and a more focused agenda of retaliation against his adversaries.
• TRUMP WILL ABANDON NATO, By Anne Applebaum
If reelected, he would end our commitment to the European alliance, reshaping the international order and hobbling American influence in the world.
• LOYALISTS, LAPDOGS, AND CRONIES, By McKay Coppins
In a second Trump term, there would be no adults in the room.
• THE SPECTER OF FAMILY SEPARATION, By Caitlin Dickerson
Donald Trump and his allies have promised to restore their draconian zero-tolerance immigration policy.
• HOW TRUMP GETS AWAY WITH IT, By Barton Gellman
If reelected, he could use the powers of the presidency to evade justice and punish his enemies.
• FOUR MORE YEARS OF UNCHECKED MISOGYNY, By Sophie Gilbert
In a second Trump term, women would once again be targets.
• THE CLIMATE CAN’T AFFORD ANOTHER TRUMP PRESIDENCY, By Zoë Schlanger
His approach to the environment: ignore it.
• IS JOURNALISM READY?, By George Packer
[Which rule is it that says that if a headline is a question, the answer is probably "no"?]
The press has repeatedly fallen into Donald Trump’s traps. A second term could render it irrelevant.
• TRUMP’S POLARIZATION OF SCIENCE IS BAD FOR EVERYONE, By Sarah Zhang
A reelected Donald Trump would continue to attack studies that stand in the way of his agenda—and to make support for scientific inquiry a tribal belief.
• CORRUPTION UNBOUND, By Franklin Foer
Donald Trump and his cronies left his first administration with a playbook for self-enrichment in a second term.
• WHY XI WANTS TRUMP TO WIN, By Michael Schuman
A second Trump term would allow China to cement its grip on the developing world.
• A MAGA JUDICIARY, By Adam Serwer
In a second term, Donald Trump would appoint more judges who don’t care about the law.
• THE PROUD BOYS LOVE A WINNER, By Juliette Kayyem
A second Trump term would validate the violent ideologies of far-right extremists—and allow them to escape legal jeopardy.
• A PLAN TO OUTLAW ABORTION EVERYWHERE, By Elaine Godfrey
Activists hope a Trump Justice Department would criminalize the procedure, with or without a federal ban.
• THE TRUTH WON’T MATTER, By Megan Garber
If reelected, Donald Trump will once again churn out absurdity and outrage with factory efficiency.
• DONALD TRUMP VS. AMERICAN HISTORY, By Clint Smith
He has promised to impose his harmful, erroneous claims on school curricula in a second term.
• A WAR ON BLUE AMERICA, By Ronald Brownstein
In a second term, Trump would punish the cities and states that don’t support him.
• TRUMP ISN’T BLUFFING, By David A. Graham
We’ve become inured to his rhetoric, but his message has grown darker.
• CIVIL RIGHTS UNDONE, By Vann R. Newkirk II
How Trump could unwind generations of progress
• TRUMP’S PLAN TO POLICE GENDER, By Spencer Kornhaber
His campaign is promising a more repressive and dangerous America.
• A MILITARY LOYAL TO TRUMP, By Tom Nichols
In 2020, the armed forces were a bulwark against Donald Trump’s antidemocratic designs. Changing that would be a high priority in a second term.
• THE LEFT CAN’T AFFORD TO GO MAD, By Helen Lewis
[This one looks like the closest to an even-handed approach, and stands out in comparison to the rest]
A second Trump term would require an opposition that focuses on his abuses of power—and seeks converts rather than hunting heretics.
• WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE AMERICAN PSYCHE IF TRUMP IS REELECTED?, By Jennifer Senior
Our bodies are not designed to handle chronic stress.
• TRUMP VOTERS ARE AMERICA TOO, By Mark Leibovich
(Note: even this one is totally negative)
If he wins a second term, perhaps we’ll finally dispense with the myth that “this is not who we are.”

"The Green Pastures" (1936) is a fantasy film directed by Marc Connelly and William Keighley and written by Connelly and Sheridan Gibney, who based the film on the novel "Ol' Man Adam an' His Chillun" by Roark Bradford. Marc Connelly adapted the story into a Pulitzer Prize-winning stage play in 1930. The movie has an all-black cast film produced by Warner Brothers and stars Rex Ingram, Frank Wilson, Oscar Polk, Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson, and George Reed.
Unlike Race Films made by Oscar Micheaux and Ralph Cooper during this period, "The Green Pastures" was a major Hollywood production. The film received substantial advertising as the nation was already familiar with the play's success, so people were anticipating seeing the motion picture version. Rex Ingram was the lead in the film as the character "De Lawd."
The film features several up-and-coming actors, like Ingram, Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson, Oscar Polk, and Edna Mae Harris. For many, this was their breakthrough film. For example, George Randol, who played the high priest in the movie, started a production company with Ralph Cooper, where they released the first film produced with an all-black capital called "Dark Manhattan" in 1937. The film also featured the Hall Johnson choir. Mr. Johnson was a black composer known for his arrangements of African-American spirituals. Throughout the 30s and 40s, many films featured the ensemble, including "Dimples" (1936) and the controversial movie "Song of the South" (1946).
"The Green Pastures" is a fantastic film with wonderful music and charming characters. However, there are, without a doubt, stereotypical portrayals of black people within the movie. As a result, some people may find the film challenging to watch if they need help seeing past the 1930s attitude. Nevertheless, the movie is a remarkable production, and Rex Ingram will be unforgettable after you watch his performance. It's a personal favorite and one that I watch every year. I highly recommend it for viewing.
Directors: Marc Connelly, William Keighley Writers: Roark Bradford, Marc Connelly, Sheridan Gibney
Starring Rex Ingram, Oscar Polk, Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson, Frank H. Wilson, George Reed, Abraham Gleaves, Edna Mae Harris, James Fuller, George Randol, Hall Johnson Choir, Billy Cumby, Ivory Williams, Dudley Dickerson, Ida Forsyne, Myrtle Anderson, Charles Andrews, Ernest Whitman, Reginald Fenderson
Storyline A preacher in a small Black church in Louisiana tells his Sunday school class stories from the Bible as if the characters were part of a local fish fry. He starts with the creation of the world by God, known as "De Lawd" (Rex Ingram), and tells how God went on to create heaven, which is just like their farmland, and then created man and woman, followed by their fall and finally the coming of Jesus Christ.

BLOOD FROM THE MUMMY’S TOMB (1971) – Episode 203 – Decades Of Horror 1970s
“She who is buried here shall henceforth have no name, shall cease to exist in the minds of man as she has ceased to exist in life.” Well, she has a name and she is remembered. Not much of a curse, ay? Join your faithful Grue Crew – Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, Jeff Mohr – as they take in the last, but not least, of the four Hammer mummy films, Blood from the Mummy’s Tomb (1971), sadly sans Peter Cushing or Christopher Lee.

An archaeological expedition brings back to London the coffin of an Egyptian queen known for her magical powers. Her spirit returns in the form of a young woman and strange things start to happen.
Director: Seth Holt, Michael Carreras (uncredited)
Writing Credits: Christopher Wicking (screenplay); Bram Stoker (from the novel by; The Jewel of Seven Stars, 1903)
Selected Cast:

Once again, it is time to revisit a Hammer Horror entry from their 1970s features. This time, the Grue-Crew follow dismembered hands and devious archeologists as they confront the resurrection of the evil Egyptian Queen with no name. By the way, her name is Tera. Shhhh… don’t tell. Andrew Kier does an admirable job stepping in for Peter Cushing (after only a day’s shooting) to lead the heroic defense alongside the beautiful Valerie Leon against the Blood from the Mummy’s Tomb (1971).
At the time of this writing, Blood from the Mummy’s Tomb is available to stream from Wicked Horror TV and various PPV sources. The film is available on physical media as a Blu-ray from Shout! Factory.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode, chosen by Jeff, will be Killdozer (1974), based on the 1944 Theodore Sturgeon novella and starring Clint Walker, Carl Betz, Robert Urich, and Neville Brand. You asked for it! Really. You did.

Portland's Ecliptic Brewing and Seattle's Ravenna Brewing team up to release Juicy Lager. The latest in Ecliptic's Cosmic Collaboration series!
Tumblr media

Press Release
Portland, Oregon. Earth … Ecliptic Brewing has partnered with Ravenna Brewing Co. of Seattle for a Cosmic Collaboration beer release. The third release in the series for 2023, Ecliptic + Ravenna Juicy Lager will ship April 19th in 16-ounce cans and draft.
Says Ecliptic’s Owner and Brewmaster, John Harris, “I met Tommy, Audra and the rest of the Ravenna crew last year. We had a good time tasting beers and talking about current beer styles and trends. I like collaborating with a Seattle brewery every year, and Ravenna was the perfect choice for 2023.”
Ecliptic + Ravenna Juicy Lager starts with Pale and Pilsner Malts and is topped off with Enigma, Cashmere, and Mandarina Bavaria hops. Notes of white grape, red currant, and citrus flavors round out this juicy brew, clocking in at 5.5% ABV.
“In the planning process,” continues Harris, “we landed on Enigma hops and brewing something other than an IPA. Both breweries love lager beer, and the concept of bringing the newer hop varieties and their juicy, citrus and slight tropical flavors/aromas into a beer just made sense. Thus, we bring to the universe a juicy lager beer- lending aromas and flavors reminiscent of ones you see in the IPA style, but in a lower ABV lager.”
Says the Ravenna team, “We loved meeting John and the Ecliptic team at our Seattle taproom last summer. As we chatted while sampling beers from our respective breweries, we talked styles, techniques, and ingredients we are all excited about. Sharing ideas with exceptional brewers is undoubtedly one of the best aspects of the industry. When John invited us to collaborate on a beer, the answer was an immediate and enthusiastic 'yes!'. Some of us on the brew team have been enjoying John's creations and contributions to the craft beer world for nearly twenty years, and it’s a treat to be able to put our heads together with John and Phil as we work on creating a beer to share with the community.”
Ecliptic + Ravenna Juicy Lager will be released in 16-ounce cans and draft throughout Ecliptic Brewing’s distribution network on April 19th. A release party is planned on April 27th in Portland, as well as May 2nd in Seattle. Visit Ecliptic’s website for up-to-date details on this release and release events.
Ecliptic + Ravenna Juicy Lager Brewed with our friends at Ravenna Brewing, this lager starts with a clean malt base, then opens up a multiverse of flavor with a juicy mix of modern hops, including Enigma and Cashmere. The adventurous will be rewarded with white grape, red currant, and lime-orange citrus flavors bursting all at once on the palette.
ABV: 5.5% IBU: 35

Tumblr media
Quartz Hill Records artist Nate Barnes returns with his latest, the summertime anthem, “Love in the Country,” available across all streaming and digital retail partners now. Stream / Buy “Love in the Country” HERE The breezy, come-on to a lover to spend the night together outdoors beneath the stars was written by country powerhouses Ryan Hurd, Jordan Schmidt, Ernest Smith and Geoffrey Warburton. “Love in the Country,” boasts toe-tappin’ lyrics and stunning visuals paired with an undeniable hook of summer love. It’s an irresistible jam with a back-porch groove. Hey baby do you hear that song All the crickets and the bullfrogs singing along Tween the wind in the trees and the birds and the bees Sounds so sweet making love in the country “‘Love in the Country’ reminds me of young love. Growing up in small town Michigan, there wasn’t much to do but take your date to the movies, hang out at late night bonfires or sit on the back of your truck bed and talk all night. And sometimes you just want to get out in the country to spend a little time together one-on-one,” says Barnes. Produced by Derek George (Randy Houser) and Ilya Toshinkskiy (Jelly Roll), “Love in the Country” possesses a chorus that makes the listener want to clap their hands and get up and dance while the bridge mirrors a summer romance between young lovers without a care in the world. “Love in the Country” is the first song from Barnes’ upcoming debut album, slated for release in early 2025. About Nate Barnes: Hailing from South Haven, Michigan, Nate Barnes is a blue-collar storyteller who writes and sings about God, family, hard work, heartache, love, and the simple joys of life. The former nuclear power plant worker spent years playing bars, coffee shops, small venues and festivals in and around his hometown while juggling a grueling day job that included shoveling and digging trenches, laying pipelines, pouring concrete and performing mechanical maintenance duties for the plant, oftentimes enduring extreme weather conditions and 14-hour shifts. A virtual unknown before signing with Quartz Hill Records, Barnes’ debut single, “You Ain’t Pretty,” became the #1 Most Added Song by a Debut Artist at Country Radio (Mediabase), cresting the Top 40 and earning over 34 million impressions on TikTok. Featured in American Songwriter, Billboard, Country Insider, Holler, Music Row, People, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Sounds Like Nashville, Taste of Countryand more, Barnes has shared the stage with Lady A, Russell Dickerson, Cody Johnson, Florida-Georgia Line and Chris Janson. Barnes recently completed his debut album with producers Mickey Jack Cones (Jason Aldean, Thomas Rhett), Derek George (Randy Houser) and Ilya Toshinskiy (Jelly Roll). His Quartz Hill Records debut album will be released in early 2025 while the first single from the album, “Love in the Country,” is available now across all streaming and digital retail partners.
