This fandom needs to make more stuff acknowledging that horror potential of the Archons.

Venti for example is easy, the man’s wearing his olds friends face (not literally, but still.) He’s proven to be able to do the whole whatever he did during his Story Quest. There’s probably a bunch of other shit I can’t think of

For Zhongli there’s the whole horror trope of: “somethings wrong with my friend” but the wrongness in context is the fact that he’s acclimating to the whole human thing. With Childe, imagine you get sent far from home to potentially kill a guy, while overseas you make a friend only to learn later that the guy you’re after is your new friend and he knew the whole time. Also the whole shapeshifting thing and being capable of making life forms out of geo (not Azdaha, some bird and whale(?), it’s in an artifact set story).

Raiden Shogun & Ei have the whole puppet thing going on. Just imagine Shogun’s head doing a 180 turn to look at the traveler before they know she was a puppet. And Ei gave up her physical form (somewhat??) for Makoto to be the Archon, meaning her form shouldn’t be confined to “mortal limitations” (this could apply to all of them tbf)

Nahida’s whole dream and mind reading thing.

With Furina and Focalors you could do something with Furina’s reflection not acting correctly sometimes, maybe Furina’s neck becomes hyper mobile after Act V. Idk with them tbh

With Venti and Zhongli, considering they’re “undercover”, something with them becoming fatally injured (by human standards) and just acting as if nothing is wrong. You know how the big bad in horror media is nigh unbeatable and just walks everything off? That vibe. (A line from a fic that has rly stuck with me is about Zhongli walking around with his entrails hanging out not paying it any mind, it was made jokingly but it eats away at my brain)

you guys know how the archons get their power from their believers?

well. let's see who the real strongest archon is.

barbatos has a whole church dedicated to him. while mondstadt is probably the smallest nation, the whole population is dedicated to the anemo archon. they believe steadfast in him, and his church prays day and night. the strength of their faith proves him not to be as weak as he tries to appear as.

morax was arguably the strongest before he quit. while he still remains strong, his power must be weakening, because liyue believes rex lapis to be "dead". i wonder is liyue will still worship morax, or be a godless nation like khaenri'ah.

raiden shogun was feared by her nation for a long time. i think her power is growing now because she is no longer simply viewed as someone to "be afraid of". now she is a better archon, therefore having more believers. because to aknowledge the existence of the divine is not always to believe. she cultivated the power of the musu no hitotachi herself, so she is incredibly strong even without the faith of her people.

lesser lord kusanali is no doubt revered. although, while she was trapped in the sanctuary of surasthana, she was not wholly believed in, because most of her nation still loved greater lord rukkhadevata. now, after erasing rukkhadevata, her people adore her. she has the power to create an endless samsara cycle, as proved in the main sumeru story quest.

focalors was praised as an archon. she had the opera epiclese to transfer power so she could fool the heavenly principles. she then transferred her power back to neuvilette, giving him his power as hydro dragon sovereign now. he has more power than an archon, and the only person who could best him now are the heavenly principles or a descender.

murata has showcased the might of her determination and will. all the power of her believers goes into fueling the sacred flame, and she gave up her gnosis powers. the power she showcased when she beat back the abyss and broke the sky was solely her own. her people believe in her so strongly, so when the day comes, and she uses the power of her people, i suspect she will be very, very strong.

Currently playing through the new lantern rite. .. this bit with Xiao is interesting… i don’t think he’s mentioned Zhongli as Rex Lapis before. This is our first indication of this. I’m betting he figured it out at the Chasm? Maybe earlier?

sharing my thoughts on titles domains and aspects in genshin impact (archons only, the one including other gods is gonna be a huge thing)

Venti, also known as Barbatos is the God of Breeze and Hope (Neuvi voicelines), the Anemo Archon, the Lord of Anemo, the God of Freedom, God of Wind and Song (KoF Handbook). He is also often ascribed the title of God of Wine (can’t find a source for this surprisingly).

Now where do these titles come from? Well, Venti originated as a single thread of the thousand winds, a breeze carrying seeds of hope. He’s implied to be the spirit who protected the Gunnhildr Clan when they first struck out from Old Mond into the biting ice and endless winter. He later claimed the Throne of the Anemo Archon at the end of the Archon War as the only living deity in Mondstadt (unsure if this is because he is a spirit of Anemo or if he was the god prayed to by the land of Anemo? Much about the Archon War + conferring of seats is yet to be determined).

That accounts for most of his domains/titles: those relating to the wind and hope. As for his title relating to wine, that also makes sense: he himself created the environment that allows Mond’s lands to produce good wine year-round, and even if that has been forgotten by many, his city’s titles would also be ascribed to him; indeed, Mond itself is often referenced as the City of Wine and Song. So moving to song, that also makes sense; he after all is the owner of the Holy Lyre der Himmel, and many of his stories feature him singing. The bards of Mond seem to be inspired by their god, which explains why it’s such a popular profession in Mond and nowhere else (though ofc musical professions aren’t restricted to Mond). In fact, even his constellation, Carmen Dei, refers to his status as the Song God.

Finally, his godly ideal: freedom. He ponders, “What does freedom truly mean when demanded of you by a god?” and for this reason lived as an absentee archon as much as possible. He ascended to godhood through his participation in freeing his people from Decarabian (the God of Storms who locked them within a wind-barrier). Venti provides options, and has thereafter always looked to his people to lead the way, and his role in Mond’s history has always been hanging back and providing what support he can while encouraging others to shine.

Zhongli, also known as Morax, is the Lord of Geo, the Geo Archon, the Warrior God, the God of History, the God of Wealth, the God of Commerce, and the God of Contracts.

Liyue’s Archon War was long and bloody; we see this in how the land itself was shaped by Zhongli’s spears. Here lies Havria, Guizhong, Osial and Beisht, as well as so many other gods. He is well called the Warrior God; it’s implied (and nothing has contradicted this) that Liyue had the highest density of gods/the bloodiest battles fought over it. He emerged the victor from this bloody battle and won the titles of Lord of Geo, the Geo Archon.

Whether or not Zhongli’s power over Mora is attached to the Archonhood or not, it’s true that Morax is the first and only source of Mora in history; his city too is known as the City of Commerce, the prime trade center of Teyvat. Of course such a god is the God of Wealth and Commerce. This also connects to his ideal of Contracts, of committing to and upholding a deal with specific principles once agreed upon.

Zhongli is also the oldest active deity, as far as we can tell, him being 6000 years old. No wonder such a god is known as the God of History. This has an interesting connection to the way Geo can store memories.

Raiden Ei, also known as Beelzebul, is the Almighty Narukami Ogosho, God of Thunder, God of Lightning, the Electro Archon, and the Goddess of Eternity, the model of the Raiden Gokaden.

She is widely known for her prowess in combat, having been the goddess who sliced a gorge into her own lands through the use of her Musou no Hitotachi. It is for this reason too that she is the model the Raiden Gokaden, the famous five noble families who learned swordsmanship and crafting from her, looked up to. I felt this was worthy of mention as swordsmanship is a significant issue in the Inazuma plotline, which should not be ignored.

It is also through her prowess in combat, as well as the death of her beloved sister, that she received the title of Electro Archon. She is well worshipped by her people due to her emphasis on combat to this day, which is why she’s often called ‘almighty’.

Ogosho (per my dubious googling) refers to a leader, and “Narukami” is a god of lightning in Japanese mythos. So let’s get into her titles God of Lightning and God of Thunder; these likely are probably merged because of Ei being Makoto’s shadow (the thunder and lightning are close companions after all), and they as beings are only said to be the very embodiment of lightning and thunder. So… I’ve got less here haha but it’s there.

Finally, she is the Goddess of Eternity. While she has earned this title in many ways, pursuing her ideal with such narrow focus during the Archon Quest in various ways, I would say the epitome of this is her creation of the Shogun puppet, after which she sealed herself within her sword to eternally remain in her Plane of Euthymia.

Now, Nahida, also known as Buer, is an interesting case. She is the Goddess of Wisdom, the Goddess of Dreams, the Dendro Archon, the Lord of Dendro, and is called the Lesser Lord Kusanali.

She’s the interesting case so far because she is the first case we had of having two noticeably different gods rule over a region. She and her predecessor Rukkhadevata had the same ideal, Wisdom, but did not to my knowledge imitation seem to have shared their dominions entirely. Rukkhadevata was the Dendro Archon, Lord of Verdure, Queen Aranyani, the Goddess of the Woods. I will not assimilating the titles used to refer to them to Nahida.

I definitely want to look more into Rukkhadevata lore (haven’t finished the desert yet so idk everything about Nabu Malikata or Deshret). I know Nahida and Rukkha have the same types of capabilities since they were the same kind of being. But my thought is, Rukkha was the Lord of the Woods first because her original domain was the rainforests of Sumeru, and second because of her connection with the Aranara as their Queen, a role Nahida seems not to have taken up. In that sense, she also seems to be a being heavily associated with memories (which clears with her lore or what I know of it). But she didn’t seem to use/access/have the same association with dreams that Nahida does. I wonder if you could really consider her a Goddess of Dreams… the same way that Nahida doesn’t really seem to be well connected to the Aranara to the point I would hesitate to call her the Lord of Verdure.

Now, Nahida herself hasn’t exactly earned many titles. She’s the Goddess of Dreams as she sees dreams themselves as a type of wisdom, and she also has power over them and can hop through them as she pleases. This is def makes a lot of sense. Then you have her being called the Lesser Lord, which isn’t really a commentary on her abilities or anything just that she’s new, and her titles as the Dendro Archon/Lord of Dendro, which is the role she plays as Rukkha’s direct successor/clone-type-thing.

A thought about the Archons, Mavuika included (spoilers under the cut)

Outside of all the Archons, the most well-adjusted, ironically, is Mavuika - and that's because she's human to begin with.

Venti (as Barbatos) formed from a wind sprite, lost his bard friend, and is very hands-off with his people, basically not acting like an Archon. He has guilt feelings and is an alcoholic (even if it's mostly for laughs), implied to be to cope with everything that happened. He also hides his divinity to be able to interact with people normally, as he wishes to, as the god of Freedom.

Zhongli (as Morax) is an Adepti dragon-like entity (his Exuvia) and lost countless friends, Guizhong amongst them, is very tired of his role and has officially retired from Archonhood , fearing Erosion and leaving the humans to deal with it as independent people, but not without having put them in danger first as part of his bet. Again, in the end, he wants to live like normal people and as such doesn't reveal he is the very god scholars are discussing about, in front of him no less.

Ei (as Beelzebul and replacement of Baal) is an embodiment of lightning (the shadow to Makoto's glow), a shell-shocked shut-in from battle, literally retreating in her inner world after having lost her sister and companions, and has completely left her puppet to deal with Inazuma's problems, until the Traveler makes her realize she became too complacent with it. There's also the whole Vision Hunt Decree to begin with. She's the "Almighty Shogun", and her learning to socialize again is part of her learning process, but she's still put on a pedestal.

Nahida (as Buer and second to Rukkhadevata) has big shoes left to fill, got abused for 500 years, is suffering from crippling self-doubt, a form of Impostor Syndrome, and is practically a doormat to her people until the Traveler and the Sumecrew step in. Her being restored into her rightful role is still fresh and while wise, her grip on the people's trust to her is still shaky. She has also quite the odd understanding of more common things, and her morals, while very compassionate, aren't fully human (given she's born from the purest Irminsul branch).

Furina (as split "humanity" from Foçalors' divinity) has no powers whatsoever, is actually a humanized Oceanid (like Foçalors was) turned fully human at the end of Fontaine's arc, suffers from tremendous depression and exhaustion due to being forced to play a 500 years long masquerade, literally had to act by the seat of her pants for just as long to carry Fontaine on her own, and Foçalors herself shows lack of empathy and bits of inhuman morality too as a god. Furina is either the "mascot" to the people of Fontaine, or revered for her acting skills, but rarely respected as a person : compare to Neuvillette, who's interacted and respected more as a person (and the Iudex) than her. When she tried a more humble approach as the "new" Hydro Archon, people outright started to reject her.

The Tsaritsa is unknown as of yet, but Mavuika is the sole Archon that, like the other Pyro Archons, is human to begin with and interacted with as an equal to her people : she's hot springs buddies with Atea, Iansan talks with her on equal footing, and when she goes to restaurants to buy food, she's treated as a good customer and old pal, and not really as a revered Archon. People don't worship her, but they TRUST her, and she managed to unify Natlan - 6 different tribes - as a whole over 500 years, appealing to human connections and a desire to protect land and loved ones, instead of authority.

Mavuika is the sole one walking out of Archonhood without resentment of the position, nor suffering BECAUSE of the position : Venti would rather not act like a god. Zhongli is tired of it. Ei played double for her sister and then let her puppet handle it, because it was too much for her. Nahida has abysmal self-esteem thinking she's not enough of a god. Furina is a complete mess, since she had to play the role. Mavuika never really cared about being the Archon, she cared about being a good person able to be a trusted leader. She USED the position to rally her people, instead of HAVING to rule because it's a divine position and a cosmic order - like the other gods/non-humans (Furina was an Oceanid and incomplete human, even if "perfectly human" in 'Foçalors 'eyes, she also had to pretend to be an Archon her whole life). It's also telling that Neuvillette's life takes a turn for the better when he manages to empathize with humans after living with them for so long.

Mavuika had what the others lack : humanity, and the capacity to enjoy being herself as a human, connecting with her people on a personal level and understanding them.

It's almost as if gods or godlike entities aren't fit to rule over people, in the long run.

Added edit : Mavuika is the sole one actively working WITH her people, to boot. True, she's the one with the plan, but she's fully aware she can't pull it off alone - she literally needs at least 6 other people (the Heroes of the Tribes) and the whole of Natlan at her side.

Venti due to being the god of Freedom has to work on the sides, and can't mingle in as an Archon. Zhongli literally betted that it's either humanity or him taking the leading role, and his "seconds", the Yaksha are themselves godlike entities - take a good look at General "I work alone" Alatus, aka Xiao, who is himself learning to rely on others. Ei crushed Inazumans under her rule and simultaneously was too complacent, letting the humans do their thing until it required her intervention, which openend the door to the Fatui. Nahida was the one crushed by her people and literally had to be saved by humans. Furina (and Foçalors) literally had to carry everything on their own back with even the Hydro Sovereign none the wiser.

And again, Neuvillette's life turns for the better because he learned to work with the people of Fontaine : Clorinde and Wriothesley often exchange with him and are crucial in handling things, Carole and Vautrin in his backstory, the Melusines as a whole, and Furina shouldered the prophecy for him. Their common point ? They all talk to him as a good old and respected pal. Foçalors' plan literally banked on the Hydro Dragon learning to empathize with people.

Each god or godlike entity makes it out or gets their "happy end" by forming human connections on equal terms, or leaving their godly role to live under a human disguise. Mavuika never hid she's human from the start, and while suffering great loss too, she isn't isolated and still has people at her side.

In Natlan, no one fights alone; not even an Archon.

All the other gods were or are mentally, socially or physically alone or lonely due to their mindsets or the circumstances, and make it out by bringing themselves to a more human level.

As equals.

I'm delusional so I'm talking about Furina losing her godhood again and why I think it's a bad call.

The only other archon to "step down" in any case is Zhongli. You could also say that Venti stepped down, but he couldn't really step down because it didn't seem like he was in charge at all.

Zhongli seemed to be in charge, an ever present god managing the nation from many different angles. He was everything a God should get, capital G. He was a great ruler, a strong protector, and a noble God.

Zhongli stepped down because he was done with that, ready to retire. He served his time, learned and experienced more than mortals could dream of and even more than his fellow Gods.

Furina has so much to learn. Something is happening to her, her curse, and she's a younger god grappling with this pedestal she's found herself on and has this prophecy on her plate that she doesn't know what she's supposed to do with.

If we look at Nahida and Ei as well, both of them are getting second chances after their shortcomings. Nahida deserves it the most, since she was shunned by her people and ignored for her whole life. Ei, meanwhile, does not deserve it. Sorry to Ei apologists (I am with you) but the Vision Hunt Decree is still her fault in my head. Her inability to step up because of her grief led to the Vision Hunt Decree, and even Scaramouche and the tragedy of his life.

Both Nahida and Ei get second chances, and Zhongli stepped down because he's already learned everything he needed to know. Then there's Venti who isn't present as a god or ruler because of his principles and his trust in his people.

Furina has so much to learn and has not gotten a second chance yet. Her stepping down would feel like such a waste and double standard. A God can steal the ambition of her people and cause so much death and despair and be redeemed but a naive, inexperienced God doesn't even get the chance to change or prove herself?

There we're once a world called Teyvat. The world was peaceful, quiet, and soothing. Even though their creator wasn't really there for them, everyone still worshiped them. Why? Simply because they created them.

But soon, the creator dies. The reason was that they killed themselves because they could not bear the responsibility. They say that the pain of it was agonizing. The world began to crumble, and celestials could not stop this. Everyone lost hope until a miracle happened, Teyvat was back to normal. What was happening? It will remain a mystery to the others. But those who share the memories [heh, Zhongli lol] shall remember and know the true story.

"Oh, hello traveler! What brings you to this fine evening?" [Venti]

"Tsk, don't listen to that drunken bard. Although I am curious why you are here?..." [Zhongli]

"..." [Raiden/Ei]

"Hello, traveler! Ah, the atmosphere is a little tense, but everything is fine..." [Nahida]

Well, this is awkward....

"Well, paimon and traveler was just walking around to do some commission, but we got lost and found you here! Augh, I don't think paimon can fly anymore because how awkward this is!"

Aether/lumine tried holding back their laughter from hearing paimon's little statement.

"Anyways, paimon is curious. Why are you guys standing near a......"

Paimon face went pale. She wanted to scream, but nothing came out of her.

"....." [archons]

"What is what, paimon?" [Traveler]

Paimon went behind the traveler as the traveler finally felt like something was wrong...

"What are you guys hiding..." [traveler]

"You don't need to know such things. This is our business, as Archons." [Zhongli]

"Zhongli is correct." [Ei]

It was weird seeing Ei not using her puppet instead to just go to this place for....what ever that thing is behind them.

"Well, shouldn't I deserve to know since I've helped you in so many things, don't you think?" [Traveler]

"The traveler is right. We can trust them since they helped us in so many things." [Nahida]

"I agree! I don't think they would dare tell a soul about it..." [Venti]

The Archons moved away to stop blocking the view. Whatever the traveler had seen made them pale. Nahida clenched her hands as the other archons looked away, seemingly looking guilty.

"What did you do?!" [Traveler]

"We did nothing! They....they were already like this!...." [zhongli]

This is the first time seeing the calm, collected archon become so...angry

The figure they saw was embedded into the ground. Their eyes held no soul. There were vines-like things growing on their arms. Making the figure more embedded than it is. It's like Teyvat is sucking them in, what's going on?

"Traveler, have you heard a story of the creator?" [Nahida/Zhongli]

Traveler shakes their head as a sign of no. While they feel Paimon gripped their clothing harder, as they see Paimon was about to tear up.

The archons let Nahida explain the story of what people believed happened. Although some parts were correct, it wasn't really the story.

Venti volunteers to sing the true story, but Zhongli stops him.

"I am older than all of you, so I should be the one who tells the story. Am I not correct?"

Nahida, let's Zhongli explain since it was true he was the oldest and experienced it in first hand.

"You see, the original creator died, and Teyvat was crumbling to its death. But the figure you saw behind us was a God who saved us. They were more powerful than the celestials, but our original creator set some limits. As you can see, the reason why they are embedded is that they sacrificed their body to become one with Teyvat. Giving support to it. Since im the god of contracts, I had seen the contract between our creator and the God who saved us. Even if our creator was dead, their soul still remained and made a deal with them. Now that kind God is here. Before they became unconscious, they told us that when an outlander reaches sumeru, they will be awakened and finally be free from the grasp." [Zhongli]
