I’ve been seeing a few folks complain about people writing hcs of DC characters with ooc song preferences, which it’s not that serious. But it gives me an excuse to show off my DC character playlists.
I initially created them as I saw a lot of playlists for Bruce & Jason with just a lot of dad rock.
Which, fair. Not everyone’s into metal.
But since I know it’s not an easy genre to get into, if you want inspiration, feel free to check out these playlists!
My one main rule for making playlists is that a majority, if not all, of the songs need to be in a genre I think the character would listen to based on their canon music taste. This is regardless whether or not it’s a genre I like. I try my best to find fun songs regardless of my personal preference.
The Playlists:
Batman: various genres of metal. I tried to go for more Doom Metal(slow & repetitive vs thrash’s blast beats and fast guitar) but there’s more than one genre of metal that’s characterized by slower instrumentals & I can’t keep up with all the names so it varies. Dad metal. Made sure that there was a sprinkle of Black Metal too (mainly bc I think it’s funny. If you’ve never listened to black metal, it sounds like you chucked the vocalist in a grinder at high speeds then proceeded to mix your instruments & your vocals the worst you could possibly make it. It’s nearly incomprehensible and it’s Perfect for Bruce.)
Bruce Wayne: a touch of old school doom metal, a sprinkle of black metal as you can write a Batman story without Bruce Wayne but not a Bruce Wayne story without Batman. A more chill version of the Batman playlist that I think Bruce would jam out to as not everyone’s into metal and I wanted to give people another option that didn’t have as heavy stuff in it.
Tim Drake: Mostly time accurate with 90s-2010’s punk rock & alt rock influences all the way through with a touch of metal to show his connection to Bruce & a few other off genre songs that represent his YJ98 pals. I tried my best to include as many bands as I could find that he canonically enjoyed as well.
Jason Todd: Jason was introduced in the 80s & is a canonical metalhead, so I think he’d listen to a combination of 80s dad metal, death metal (come on, it’s just too perfect of a genre name to pass up), thrash, & a little black metal (the genre I assigned to Batman).
Clark Kent: Dad metal. He canonically listens to Metallica post-crisis so I just gave him my dad’s taste in music lmao. Made sure to add a few satire ones because Clark is an little shit and would very much enjoy satire songs. Unfortunately, I genuinely could not get my Spotify recs to give me decent country music. I tried. It only gave me modern mainstream artists and after a month of trying to find good pre 2000’s country, I just gave up. So it’s mainly metal:(
If any of y’all want to send me 80s-2000’s country recs, that would be very kind of y’all. (the type of country music ma & pa kent would listen to that Clark would have grown up with)
Kon-El: is full of songs that are, well, time accurate to his original run. Ranging from 1969-2002 [the year his solo run was canceled], this playlist not only has songs he could have theoretically picked up in a record shop or blasted on a boom box during the day but is also full of bands he canonically listens to! This playlist is chalk full of Kon’s canonical alt rock & metal music taste as well as rock and proto-metal hits of the time!
Bart Allen: to be clear, Bart wouldn’t listen to any of these as music is just too slow for him. These are songs that relate to Bart or songs that represent his connections to his friends with no specific genre as I didn’t just want to have playlists full of nothing but metal. (Although I think he’d really like metal concerts as he’d probably enjoy the feeling of the heavy base resonate in his chest.)

If you had to describe crust and all its various subgenres, how would you? Defining sounds, aesthetic, etc all wrapped up in one. What makes something crust
This actually hits on a vary interesting part of the crust scene to me. "Crust punk" is more then just crust too me. It's all sorts of music from all over punk/hardcore/metal. D beat is a good example, d beat isn't crust but every crustie loves d beat. Same for grind, uk/us hardcore, death/black metal, noise punk. So describing the crust scene and describe actual crust punk music (as apposed to music crustie like) is two different situations
AS FOR A ANSWER the core crust sound that all other come from its that first wave uk/us thrash and first wave bm, the Bristol style anarcho punk (ie disorder, chaos uk etc), discharge and it's clones (crucifix, disattack, anti cimex), and the more out there anarcho punk like antisect, dirt, conflict.
For individual sounds it's heavy influence on a fuzz and gain heavy guitar play simpl punk riffs with a almost thrash sound to em.Bass is vary gangly, distorted and low for both guitar and bass there both distorted to the point you can't hear the individual strums of the guitar. Drums have a high snare and cymbols with low toms to make the drum fills stand out. Lots of rolls, crash cymbol hits and odd poly rhythms. And the high hat is played open instead of closed. And finally the vocals can be done all sorts of way bouncing from crass style rhythmic saying of words, metal style growls, hardcore yells, to even singing (at least in the the us scene for some reason), focusing on angry and gloomy political topics taken spoken about in a broad view, less personal and more third person
First distinction in style (excluding scenes crustie like but aren't crust proper, agin dbeat, grind, etc)
Stenchcore: much more metal, more odd rhythms, and more riffs over speed. Many times slower, more intricate, cleaner, & atmospheric guitar. Also tends to describe its politics in a more esoteric style (see deviated instinct, life, sword wielder)
Crasher crust: uk early crust with a more frantic style. More quick, jumpy. Less atmospheric and moody guitars and bass, focusing on more extreme noisy & and that high guitar low bass sound. And a more hardcore yelling vocals then growls (see gloom, atrocious madness, death dust extractor)
Stadium crust: heavy Scandinavian dbeat influences, much clearer less distorted sounding bass and guitar. More pushing drum and less fills, and more intricate riffs (see wolf brigade, victims, dis fear)
Neo crust: lots of melodic but dark riffs. break downs of slower sludge metal riffs, simpler black metal influenced drums. Plus more slower atmospheric sounds. (See his hero is gone, habak, ekkaia)
Blackend crust: early uk crust and neo crust with a heavy influence of bm (as the name suggests) heavy on rhythm. Simple drawn out riffs, less fuzz on guitar and bass (see iskra, dodsrit, martyrdöd)
I know there's more genres but I need to get this out so I'll put the others in a re blog plus soon the genres get messy and muddy as far as hard line differences

*really loud snare*
i made my own talent swap with Ryoma as the Ultimate Drummer! 🥁
info under the cut!
his legs and arms are already strong (or at least i assume) from playing tennis so i imagine it would help with playing the drums for long periods of time and very quickly which allows him to keep up with genres like speed metal and thrash metal without getting too winded. his drum kit is specially designed for his height, and he's played at concerts alongside whatever famous bands exist in the DR universe and made a name for himself. still chews on candy cigarettes lol
i'm not sure how his backstory or prison time would fit into his talent but something would happen to make him stop playing the drums.
-
inspirations: Lars Ulrich, the drummer from Metallica. his parents were tennis stars and he himself has played tennis before becoming a drummer and forming Metallica.
Ryoma's shirt is based on "Ride the Lightning", Metallica's second album, because the titular song is about prison execution, which i thought would fit Ryoma's death row sentence.

So I’ve been thinking about different metal genres as Pokémon types. Some are easier than others
kawaii - fairy type
Thrash/speed - electric type
Nu - poison
Pirate - water
Folk - grass
Viking - ice
Power - dragon
Industrial - metal
Doom - ghost
gothic - dark (I think doom metal and gothic metal can swap if they want to)
Prog - psychic
Heavy - rock
I just don’t know where to place death metal, grindcore, black netal, glam metal, and death core. And what genres matches ground, fire, flying, bug or normal

Lemmy Kilmister, born Ian Fraser Kilmister on December 24, 1945, was a legendary English musician and songwriter best known as the founder, bassist, and lead vocalist of the iconic rock band Motörhead. With his gravelly voice, aggressive bass playing, and larger-than-life persona, Lemmy became an enduring figure in the world of heavy metal and rock 'n' roll.
Lemmy's career began in the 1960s, where he played in various bands before joining Hawkwind, a space rock band, in 1971. He was fired from Hawkwind in 1975 and then formed Motörhead, initially as a side project. Motörhead soon became his primary focus, and the band's relentless, high-energy approach to music quickly gained them a loyal following.
Motörhead's music, characterized by its speed, raw power, and Lemmy's distinctive vocals, laid the groundwork for thrash metal and influenced countless bands across genres. Songs like "Ace of Spades," "Overkill," and "Iron Fist" became anthems of rebellion and a testament to Lemmy's uncompromising attitude toward life and music.
Lemmy's persona extended beyond music; he was known for his love of gambling, collecting Nazi memorabilia, and his fondness for Jack Daniel's whiskey, famously consumed neat with Coca-Cola. Despite his rough exterior, Lemmy was revered for his honesty, humor, and loyalty to his fans.
Lemmy Kilmister passed away on December 28, 2015, just days after his 70th birthday, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations of rockers and metalheads. His impact on the music world remains profound, with his contributions to rock 'n' roll and heavy metal ensuring his place as a true rock icon.
Our hero!

No One Gets Out Alive - You'll Never Leave The Mountains
youtube
NO ONE GETS OUT ALIVE , Initially, a one man band that started in 2008 out of Germany. Primarily a brutal death metal band even though some people call it deathcore . I don't acknowledge all of the sub-genres of metal ,to me it's just extreme metal . Placing tags on bands calling on this or that , fuck all that shit. Extreme metal is extreme metal. I do separate heavy metal from speed metal ,thrash metal ,death metal and brutal death metal . Only because the sounds are so distinct.Brutal death metal has the really low guttural vocals, pig squeeling , snorting , grunts and very choppy ,grungy guitars with low distortion. But these guys or guy I should say added banjo to the sound adding an interesting Appalachian bluegrass sound..
Here I have invented my own terminology.Brutal death metal bluegrass .
