Been rereading the How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom light novels, and one thing I really enjoy about this series is its treatment of the male side characters.

Usually, with this kind of harem-esque type of shonen story, you have the main character, who gets all the girls, and then most of the other male characters who show up tend to get killed off and/or played for comedy (looking at you, Sword Art Online).

Once in a blue moon, one or two side guys might get a minor romance subplot, but usually, even the ones who want a relationship get blown off by literally every girl they go near.

Realist Hero, on the other hand, was like, "yes, our main character has lots of attractive wives, but that doesn't mean every girl is into him, or that there aren't plenty of other guys around him who are also good marriage material."

Most of the male characters-- friends, enemies, reformed villains, etc-- get some kind of romance (generally directly influenced by the main character).

It's nice, as a reader who tends to get attached to side characters and usually wants them to get their happy endings.

How A Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom: 2nd Season (2022)

Plot premise:  Genjitsu Shugi Yuusha no Oukoku Saikenki Together with his talented aides, the "Realist Hero" Kazuya Souma continues his quest of reinvigorating the Elfrieden Kingdom through administrative reform. Having successfully conquered Van—the capital city of the Principality of Amidonia—Kazuya now faces the envoy from Gran Chaos Empire, who wishes to impose punishment for breaching the ban on war established by the Mankind Declaration Treaty. Despite the dire situation, Kazuya sees a path to avoid unnecessary conflict whilst gaining new allies. With his plan being seemingly perfect, the only barrier to success is gaining approval from the envoy.

± As the second season expands into external issues after managing to unite the kingdom, it does finally step into a couple of actually Machiavellian courses of actions and not just ideology. It still remains a smart political story and starts to cover the international relations that a kingdom could develop. It's pretty fun, even though the harem part went a little over the line by basically hypnotizing Souma into revealing his feelings rather than letting the characters talk about it, eep. But i suppose it's at least nice how they all genuinely care in some way.

POLYAMORY RIGHTS! I love this. Not only a guy can have several wives, but contrary to polygamy in our world, women are not restricted to one husband only and treated like "used property" if they had more than one man, and instead can have several husbands too! This is literally the most feminist way to introduce harem to your world! So much, I would not even oppose the trope!
