more wof ocs!!! :D
random info under the cut hehe
Prince Genesis of the SkyWings is violent and angry, often participating in his mother’s cruel arena, taking out his anger on dragons forced to fight against him. He envies his twin brother, Prince Horizon, and his relationship with the lovely Princess Ephyra. Genesis wants everything Horizon has, and more.
Prince Dingo went from living the life of an abandoned orphan in the streets of the Scorpion Den, to living a lavish and spoiled life when he was adopted by King Badland. He spends his days causing chaos in the SandWing Stronghold and (obliviously) avoiding assassination attempts from his Aunt, Princess Seraphina.
Princess Ephyra is stoic, showing very little emotion at all times. She is soft-spoken, but harbors an impressive temper. Though not ever acting outright angry or violent, she can be cruel in her own way. She doesn’t care for much in the world and only desires a bit more fun in her luxurious, classy life.
Queen Paradise was a cruel, selfish dragon. Her ignorance and pettiness is what led to her death at the hands of Andromeda. She ignored the rising tensions between the NightWings and the RainWings, which caused many— especially Andromeda— to see her as an unfit queen.
Queen Evermore is a kind, motherly MudWing. She is quite easygoing and understanding, viewing her entire tribe as her family. Because of that, she can be a bit hesitant in offering aid to outsiders.
Queen Avalon doesn’t feel like a queen at all. After the death of her mother, Queen Paradise, she was forced onto the throne at the young age of 14. Avalon was once sassy, playful, and a bit mean; but ever since her mother’s death, she became quiet and subdued, hardly ever speaking or showing any emotion.

Do you have any historical fiction book recs?
I don’t read a lot of historical fiction, so the majority of this list will compromise YA histfic from the late 90s/early 00s.
The early Dear America and Royal Diaries books were pretty foundational for me, and I still go back to reread them. Carolyn Meyer(s?) wrote some great histfic along the lines of Royal Diaries. Jane Yolen’s The Queen’s Own Fool is excellent, and of course, we stan Number the Stars. And none for Philippa Gregory byeeeee.
As for contemporary titles, the Maisie Dobbs books are 💯💯. They take place between the 1920s and 1940s, brilliant lady detective, excellent period detail. Also, the book that’s made like, the biggest impression on me since 2016 is Jerusalem by Alan Moore. It’s kind of hard to even describe what that book is about, but it’s MAGNIFICENT and has several long sections that deal with English class and racial history, and also Oliver Cromwell. I also enjoyed the first three books of the Outlander series.
Oh, and I love The Red Tent, (it gives Mists of Avalon but Genesis instead of Arthurian) tho that might be Hebrew Bible fanfic* as opposed to histfic.
Anyway, there are a lot of folks here who I’m sure will chime in with more current and diverse recs, so don’t forget to check the notes 🙂
ETA: When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit
*id actually argue that all histfic is fanfic, but im not hating.

ETERNAL LABYRINTH: AN INTRODUCTION
It is, officially, the 7 year anniversary of when I made Eternal Labyrinth. Yippee! So, to celebrate, here's a hopefully coherent introduction to the shit that's taken over my life for. seven goddamn years holy shit.
Eternal Labyrinth is the overarching name for my main 3 paracosms: Phantasmagoria, Mad as a Crow, Fractured Fables. They are all connected thanks to Multiverse Bullshit! The 3 also have AUs that are semi-canon, in which they have crossovers and the characters interact with each other. The AUs are: the Mad Rabbit AU (MaaC/FF), the Tamagotchi AU (Phantasmagoria/FF), and Constellations (Phantasmagoria/MaaC).
A quick rundown of what each paracosm is about:
Phantasmagoria: VRVerse || Major oddcore/weirdcore/dreamcore vibes, literally almost anything can happen. Behaves like a video game most of the time, I suppose.
Mad as a Crow: Superhero Universe || A terrible DC/Marvel crossover that’s trying to have one coherent storyline with consistent characters.
Fractured Fables: FairytaleVerse || Fanfiction I don't feel guilty for writing because all of the source material is in the public domain. Quite literally my city now.
You can find me talking about each paracosm on these blogs:
For Phantasmagoria only content, go to @acircusfullofdemons.
For Mad as a Crow only content, go to @madasacrow.
For Fractured Fables only content, go to @fractured-fables.
Each paracosm exists inside each other, if that makes sense?? It’s kind of like the Nickelodeon Sitcom Universe. They are both real events and also taking place on a reality show at the same time.
Phantasmagoria is a video game, Polybius, that can be played at JoyHall Arcade.
Mad as a Crow is a comic book series/company, Mad Crow Comics (similar to DC or Marvel).
Fractured Fables is a tv show, Toybox Tutors, aimed towards children.
When doing crossovers, the general vibe is “oh hey, this is like that [media] I like, just slightly to the left”. The only exception is for things like the APOCALYPSE AU, where the ‘cosm they’re from doesn’t really matter as they’re all put in a Situation.
WORLDS & DIMENSIONS
HUBS
The (Dimensional) Hub — All dimensions are tied together due to “The Hub”, aka Earth I. The Hub is an endless void that often takes the form of an empty arcade or mall. Each dimension also has its own unique door and key.
Player Hub — A mini version of the Dimensional Hub, except now it’s suited for a singular person. Everyone that has played Polybius has one.
DIMENSIONS
Holius — Space, primary home to Aliens.
Heaven — Primary home to Angles, mirror of the Netherworld.
Earth I — The original earth. Used to be full of animals before Vitalis added humans.
Earth II — Thisverse/our earth, no magic or supernatural creatures. Mirror of Arcadia.
Earth III — The apocalypse, technical ‘sequel’ to Earth II.
Earth IV — Magic exists, but only in specific locations. Supernatural beings also exist in secret.
Arcadia — Supernatural beings are the majority. Mirror of Earth II.
StoryBrooke — Where various fairytale & classic lit characters live.
Avalon — Fae realm.
Cyberspace — Dimension made by Genesi H. Voltrian. Only Computer Errors can enter.
Mirje — Dimension made by Myriam Travers/Bloody Mary. Only Spirits can enter.
Netherworld — Primary home to Demons. Mirror of Heaven.
Afterlife — Specifically the Arcadian afterlife. Primary home to Spirits.
The VoiD — A pocket dimension that people can clip into on accident, basically the Backrooms. Often used for storing unwanted stuff/trash.
SPECIES
Aliens —Extraterrestrial/celestial beings.
Aquaentians — Aquatic supernatural creatures.
Computer Errors — Sentient Errors that spawn within Cyberspace. They can only be created if an existing CE kills you AND takes your Soul into Cyberspace — the process won't work otherwise. Because of this, some may see them as a subtype of Spirit, though as they're still relatively new classification is still being debated. Their appearance is very upsetting, often giving people headaches, and they make circuit-like markings under their eyes / neck / shoulders.
Dragons — A now extinct species.
Gods — So, this one brings up the concept of religion in Arcadia as the Gods are a part of their own pantheon and such, but that's not really related to this topic. They are omnipotent & omniscient in their specific domain (ie; the god of nature knows everything about nature, but very little about space). Gods can be either born or given their powers from another God.
Onerioi — Personified dreams & nightmares.
Puria— Angels, Demons, & Faed.
Humans
Avians — Humans with wings.
Cambions — Hybrid between Human & Demon.
Dhampir — Hybrid between Human & Vampire.
Elementalists — Humans that can control an element.
Empaths — Humans that can control an emotion.
Halflings — Humans that can turn into animals, basically werewolves / werecats / shapeshifters.
Regular / Purebloods — Humans with 0 magical ability or Zaryis DNA.
Seers — Humans that can see Spirits.
Witches — An old term used to refer to a Human that uses magic. By now this is the standard / expectation.
Reapers — Zaryis that takes Souls to the Afterlife.
Grim Reapers — Reapers that take anyone.
Ritions — Reapers that take those who died of famine.
Valkin — Reapers that take those who died in battle.
Pestis — Reapers that take those who died of sickness.
Spirits
Ghosts
Poltergeists
LORE
I’m gonna…try and keep this brief, but y’know. I’ve had this for about 7ish years so it’s kind of a Mess.
ORIGINS — Everything on Earth I was fine and chill until Vitalis (God of Life) introduced Humans. After some conflict between the Humans and Sentient Animals that previously lived there, a pair of twins get separated from one another. Theia (Goddess of Death) and Vitalis take in a twin each: Theia with Shadow, and Vitalis with Lumi. Ketrill (King of Shadows/Darkness) & Eloise (Queen of Light) are also made by the Gods, in order to protect the twins. Ketrill cares for Shadow, while Eloise cares for Lumi. Each twin is cared for by their patron until they almost die. Shadow is revived and Lumi is made immortal. The twins manage to reunite, and all is well until Vitalis grows jealous of their friendship, because he and Theia can’t really be together. So, he sets out to kill the twins. With Emory’s (The Librarian/God of Knowledge) help, Theia, the twins, Ketrill, and Eloise manage to escape Earth I. Unfortunately, they all get separated.
CROSSFIRE — Shadow, now named Nox, winds up on Earth II. His memories have gotten wiped, forgetting about his supernatural origins, and lives a normal life until Emory finally finds him, where he’s then taken to Earth IV while Emory searches for the rest of their little family. While there, Nox meets Jake, an Angel shoved into a Human body as an experiment of sorts. The two team up to unravel the mess of supernatural shit going on.
FAUX PIXIES — Lumi, now Lucien, and Eloise, wind up in Neverland together with their memories intact. They live as Fairies in Pixie Hollow, with Lucien longing for her twin, wondering if he even made it out alive. Despite her oncoming depression, Lucien befriends Captain Hook, and helps him ward off Peter Pan from time to time. After helping Wendy attempt to get her brothers back, Lucien discovers that Fifi (Goddess of Time) has trapped StoryBrooke in a time loop thanks to a deal she made with Blake Grimm. Unfortunately, Lucien doesn't have the power to stop her. So the loop keeps going and she's kinda scared her & Eloise will get stuck in it and lose their memories.
REUNION — Thankfully, the two wind up reuniting with Emory after arriving in StoryBrooke. He takes them back to Earth IV, where Nox is. While Emory was away, Nox had managed to get most of their memories of Earth I back. He also reunited with Ketrill! After Emory gets Theia from Arcadia, the gang's all back together and helps Nox piece a few more things together. Of course, there’s still the problem of Vitalis, who’s been mainly focused on Nox but now that they’re all together? Yeah he’s not gonna be happy.
THE FIGHT — The twins get the idea to take the fight to Vitalis. Theia tries to advise against them, but basically everyone agrees that he needs to be stopped sooner than later. The only problem is, how do you kill Life himself? The answer: with Death herself! Though Nox and Lucien did most of the fighting against Vitalis — with Ketrill & Eloise’s help — Theia is the one to land the final blow. Her and Vitalis exchange some words, he basically apologizes and explains he just wanted to be with her, but clearly he did it all wrong. Theia extracts his soul/essence and becomes the Goddess of both life and Death. Earth I, and the rest of the multiverse, can finally know peace. Kind of.
CURRENT — Upon Vitalis' death, Nox and Lucien are granted godhood, with Nox becoming Entropy — god of chaos — and Lucien becoming Harmony — goddess of order. As Harmony, Lucien now has the power to order Fifi to stop the time loop in StoryBrooke, which she finally does. Still concerned over StoryBrooke, Harmony asks her family to help keep everything, well, harmonious. Without the time loops, then the Fables will have children and more Tales will take place. Given that she used to be Tinkerbell, this is a valid concern for her. Emory, too, as he was Cheshire. Not wanting his role anymore, he gives it to Entropy, who is ecstatic to be one of their favorite literary characters. Harmony, meanwhile, decides to settle into Neverland, so she can keep an eye on Peter Pan and help any other Lost Kids who wind up there.
tldr: life & death get a divorce and have a custody battle so bad it becomes the entire multiverse's problem
And that’s it! I guess. I know that doesn’t seem like much, but y’know. Side-stories and multiple other paras that don’t have anything to do with the actual plot … well, this is all technically going on in the background of all my other paracosms. so. really, THIS has nothing to do with the plot lmao.

Overview
Thought to have originated in Central Asia and moved across the Eurasian continent through millennial, these fruit trees were then introduced to North America by European colonists, where they can be invasive. In the wild, they can be found along fields and hedgerows; especially on public lands and hiking trails that were once orchards or farmsteads. This small fruiting tree has scaly, brown bark and dense branches. The leaves are ovate with serrated edges, with the undersides being lighter in color than the tops. The apple blossoms (shown below) appear mid to late spring and form in what is called a corymb; a flower cluster whose lower stalks are proportionally longer so the flowers form a flat or slightly convex head. Each blossom has five petals that range from pinkish white to white in color, with many stamens in the middle.
The apple fruit ripens from mid to late fall, and the conditions of the growing season effect juice and sugar content. When it's allowed to ripen closer to a frost it ensures more sugars and aromatics. Fallen fruit and fruit that detaches easily are also ripe enough for use.
Due to the invasive nature of the tree, apples don't have any issues with regrowth for the next harvest in North America.

Folklore
-Golden Apples of the Hesperides-
Several sources speak of the marriage between Zeus and Hera, saying that Gaia (the Earth) gave the golden apples that had been entrusted to the Hesperides care to Zeus and/or Hera as a wedding gift.
-The Race of Atalanta and Milanion/Hippomenes-
Atalanta was a young woman who refused to marry unless the suitor could beat her in a foot race. Hippomenes (aka Milanion depending on source) was gifted three beautiful apples by Aphrodite and threw them down one-by-one during his race with Atalanta. She stopped and picked each up, thereby losing the race.
-The Judgement of Paris-
If you remember the story of the Iliad, you may remember the apple of discord which really kicked the whole thing off. The goddess Eris dropped an apple which had the Greek "Ti Kallisti" (romanized) written on it, meaning "beautiful," at a wedding. Hera, Aphrodite, and Athena fought over the apple, deciding to have Paris of Troy be the judge of their contest. He would eventually decide in favor of Aphrodite who gifted him Helen, the wife of Menelaus, the most beautiful woman in the world.
-Iðuun's Golden Apples-
The norse were also fans of golden apples. Iðuun's apples in the Prose Edda and Poetic Edda are thought to give the gods immortality and keep them youthful. The Prose Edda describes how Iðuun was kidnapped and the gods began to age. So the apples need Iðuun to work.
-Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil-
In the Book of Genesis, Adam and Eve are instructed to not eat of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. However, it is never said what kind of fruit the tree bore. Western European Christian folklore dictates that the tree bears apples due to a latin pun: malum (apple) and malum (evil). Eve ate the malum.
-The Voyage of Bran-
This old Irish tale tells of our hero, Bran mac Febal, traveling to the otherworld. He falls asleep to some beautiful music and when he wakes, he finds a silver branch with white blooms, later identified as an apple branch by an Otherworld woman.
-Echtra Condla-
In this Irish tale, Connla had a fairy lover who was banished by a druid. Before the spell took hold, she threw him an apple. From then on, when he ate of the apple it would grow and become whole again, and his longing for his fairy lover would grow stronger as well.
-Avalon-
An island in the Arthurian legends ruled by Morgan and her sisters. According to Geoffry of Monmouth in his "Historia Regum Brittinae," it gets its name from the fruits its grow, among them apple trees. This is also where King Arthur goes to heal when he is mortally wounded.
-Snow White and the Seven Dwarves-
Snow White is a classic tale that most of us know from Disney. In the tale the young girls step-mother, and queen, wants to remain the "fairest of them all" and attempts to poison the girl with an apple. Which only succeeds in putting her to sleep, due to the apple lodging into her throat (according to Grimm's Fairytales).
-The Juniper Tree-
There was a woman who cut her finger while cutting an apple in winter, her blood fell onto the snow and she wished for a child "red as blood and white as snow." She had a son, but died a few years later. Her husband took another wife and had a daughter together. The boy was disliked by his step-mother and she beheaded him with the lid of a chest of apples, where his head then sat. The half-sister could see the ghost of the boy, who the step-mother had buried beneath the juniper tree (the same tree his mother had been buried under)... there is more to this gruesome tale but that's where the apples end.
-Johnny Appleseed-
An American folk legend based on a real person, Johnny Appleseed was a man who scattered apple seeds across Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Ontario. The real Johnny Appleseed was a piece of work, but in legend he was friend to children and carried news to settlements as well as building apple nurseries along his travels. It's said his bare feet never felt cold and a rattlesnake could never bite through his skin.
⸙༄𓆤𓆩𓆪❁𓇢𓆸🏵
Uses in Witchcraft
Apples are often associated with love, beauty, and fertility; as we can see in many of the tales above. These fruits can be worked to bring in love as well as beauty (which is in the eye of the beholder). An apple can you bring you what you most desire. We also see that the apple is often related to life, death, and the otherworld. A branch with blossoms may be an excellent aid in spirit flight aiming to enter the otherworld, while making an apple offering can be great for spirit work. Ozark folk magic uses an apple cut in half for wart charming (getting rid of warts), as well as holding illnesses and curses, predicting love, and causing pain.
⸙༄𓆤𓆩𓆪❁𓇢𓆸🏵
Safety Notes
No known safety issues.

Conclusion
Apples seem to be loved the world over. If you have any folklore you would like to share about apples, or how you use them in your craft please share! I was only able to find information from Europe, so it would be wonderful to hear stories from people in other places. What do you love about apples?

Starry Starry Night - Akiko Valentina constantly wished that she’d take that advice to heart for once in her life. Growing up, it seemed like every wish she’d make would come true. Life should’ve been a breeze… and it was for a while. Her family had won the lottery a few years ago, along with her mother’s seaweed gin distillery taking off which brought the Valentina Family even more fortune. Classes would be cancelled, boys asked her to the dance, her favourite TV shows would suddenly be back even when they were cancelled whenever she seemed to will it. Though, like a bad 90s kids horror series, there was always a cruel twist at the end.
Now living alone in the penthouse apartment her now dead family’s fortune got her, Akiko spends her free time overindulging herself in luxury, to distract herself from the dark. Things had gotten stale after two years of spoiling herself rotten.

Eidolons and Eudaemonia -Eudaimonia is a world where each country worships a particular element. Each country has a temple and a candle that must be lit at all times to prevent a calamity. Its said that the candles represent hope, the one thing that kept ‘humanity’ going after the first calamity. Every few centuries, new candles must be created and infused with magic and blessings from each country before being placed in the temples and lit. It’s a ritual that has been carried on long before the formation of the Church of the Star Bringer, which eventually took control of candle duties.

Man, these days it feels like F/GO is always just a few steps away from shitting the bed completely. They seem to be doing away with Event Reruns and new Main Interludes entirely, and the ability to acquire old Event Welfare Servants through the Evocation Leaf Exchange feels like a blatant band-aid solution. Then you have the whole mess with the Servant Skill tree being a complete mess geared towards encouraging you to SPEND SPEND SPEND all your SQ on every single new SR and SSR Servant ad nauseum. Not to mention there's the whole mess with F/GO NA getting timegated on the rest of Avalon Le Fae even though Nasu said we'd be getting the whole thing right away.
It could always be worse, though. You could always play PSO2 New Genesis with its absolutely glacial release schedule and crippling lack of content. (Please don't do this. As a PSO2 player I am BEGGING YOU to spare yourself the headache.)
yeah i mean it always could be worse but it’s almost hard to even imagine how the game could realistically get to a worse state at this point
but it’s not really “shitting the bed” per say, it’s very deliberate and beneficial to lasengle for the game to be in this state. fgo’s player base has proved consoomer brainrotted loyal enough that lasengle really doesn’t have to do much more than the bare minimum to keep people spending and positively promoting it. so if anything it’s better for them to invest only the bare minimum while also increasing the presence of psychologically hostile tactics like FOMO via removing reruns and adding these atrocious skill trees. now that they have committed to this model they will never go back because it would make less money.
all they have to do is release one new servant every other month that makes people’s dicks hard, or latches onto their brains in such a way that they decide it’s uncontrollably their new blorbo comfort character husband wife son daughter whatever of this half of the year, or just… has a busted kit, and then one story chapter per year. that’s it. they can do whatever they want inbetween and none of it matters.
death will be our only relief now.
… oh yeah, i almost tried that game once but the download size stopped me.

Two things for TOA; who's your favorite character and why, and what part of the franchise do you think had the most wasted potential?
Now I'm sure, if you know me, that it's pretty damn obvious that Jim is my favorite character, so I'm just going to be brief about this. One of the main appeal to me is the monster trope that is associated with him, because that's how I got into toa in the first place. I think it's one of the things that really makes him stand out to other protags that are similar to him. It's also really fun to explore cause it's a trope that's really underrated and one that I don't see much in media sooo-
For other characters it's Douxie, his design is solid and I love the the journey he goes through in wizards. I believe Claire too, cause I draw her a lot. Idk I just really like the a good chunk of the main characters in these shows. It's a chaotic friendship and I love that.
The second question- ooooo boy. I think, although it being the most obvious answer, it's rott that has the most wasted potential. For wizards, I would say that I'm fairly satisfied with Wizards (with my only real issues being the twist with Jim and that the didn't really include elements involving 3 Below all that much, I'll touch more on this later) but with rott, it had a lot of potential with the premise it had.
Deities wishing to reset the world because they've grown tired of humanity creating an imbalance and forcing magical creatures out of their land and persecuting them over the years, that's such an interesting premise that can easily be equated to real world issues. But no, it's just a typical adventure story with a black and white heroes vs villains with no nuance whatsoever (And since the story can easily be equated to real world issues, it makes the implications kind of messy ngl). Also we just don't get that much interactions between different characters, most of that time it has to something in relation to Jim which is fucking boring story wise.
Literally I can't think of a single moment where one of the other main characters have a moment that relates to an arc of their own. Which really cause there are some characters that are soo due for a character arc of their own.
Another is just the refusal to use any of the worldbuilding from the different installments. I'm going to start with 3Below. There's been this issue where the writers don't put in enough effort to include and tie in 3Below's characters and worldbuilding to the overarching stories. I see people say how 3Below doesn't fit or belong in the series as a fault of the show itself which I don't agree with. I think it's more of the fault of the writers because they have every opportunity to include 3Below to the story if they really wanted, especially in rott. (I would also like to mention that in an article, Diego Luna said there was going to be an arc for Krel in wizards, but it was cut).
For wizards it was more like rott didn't build upon what it brought to the table, especially when it comes to information regarding to the Arcane Order. Like who are they? What are they? How the fuck did the Genesis Seal came to be? Are they demigods or wizards? Did Nari create the Kronosphere or Heart of Avalon? What the fuck were Bellroc and Skrael doing during the centuries after the Battle of Killahead? There so much but no new information is given to the world.
WHEW, THAT WAS A LOT. I'm going to leave it that that but yeah, there's a lot of wasted potential towards rott SDKJASALK-

Alright so here’s my idea of the timeline of events based on what we’re given in the trailer;
Bellroc and Skrael show up in the city after observing Nari, Archie, and Douxie for a while, and get Nari and Archie from Douxie. The airship gets destroyed in the battle, and Douxie only has the mini Heart of Avalon on him. But (and this part is purely speculation), Douxie can use some of the remaining power to send him over to Arcadia. They return to Arcadia for help since the Order is now all back together and have the Genesis Seals. Our magical wizard boy (tm) sends a magic message (a la Merlin) out to the Arcadia Gang to meet him at the remains of Camelot.
Meanwhile, Jim has reunited with Barbara and is somewhat better terms with Strickler (Jim resigns to sleeping on the couch since all the babies are living in his old room.) They’re talking and chilling when they get word from Douxie to meet up.
Barbara insists on joining as does Strickler, and Jim sends them ahead to Camelot.
Jim bikes out to grab Toby and Claire.
Double meanwhile, Douxie gets Krel to send a message to get Aja, Varvatos, and Eli to rejoin the group back on Earth. Krel pulls out the older wormhole generator and they’re back on Earth. (They also brought Luug along too.)
Triple meanwhile, Aaarrrggghhh and Blinky are back in the New Trollmarket. Douxie asks them for help, explaining the dire situation, and they (along with Nomura) take the gyre out to the remains of Trollmarket.
Here’s an opportunity to show the broken/dead Heartstone, which looks like it will be brought back to life with magic once the Titans are unleashed.
Krel and Douxie have set up the meeting in the room housing a table belonging to the Knights of the Round Table. The gang gathers round the table (our Knights of Arcadia hehe) and they lay out their plan.
Here is where Douxie + Krel bring up a projection of the Earth
Douxie points out where the city they were staying in was and (translated from Merlin’s grimoire) where the Titans were laying dormant.
They decide to go get Nari as soon as possible.

2023 Toyota Crown Overview
Toyota Crown, a new high-riding sedan with the shape of a hatchback (though it has a conventional trunk), hybrid-only powertrains and truly funky styling. Toyota often plays it too safe with its new vehicles, so it's nice to see the company really swinging for the fences with the Crown.
t has been 50 years since Toyota last sold its Crown sedan in the U.S., but the model was introduced in Japan in 1955 as the Toyopet Crown. It has been Toyota's mainstream sedan there ever since, the choice of families, executives, taxi drivers, and police.
The 2023 Crown, now in its 16th generation, is back in the States as the three-trim, all-hybrid, all-wheel-drive, tall-roofed, fastback-styled four-door replacing the venerable Toyota Avalon sedan. It is almost the same size, inside and out, as the Honda Accord and Volkswagen Arteon sedans.
The Crown's tall roofline and high seating position have generated some debate. But there's no denying that it is eye-catching, especially in the optional two-tone color scheme available with the top Platinum trim.
By positioning the Crown as a premium model, Toyota is telling shoppers that this is a special vehicle, not to be confused with other midsize sedans. By offering two hybrid powertrains, one of them more performance-oriented, Toyota hopes the Crown will appeal to those seeking fuel efficiency and creature comforts as well as those hoping for a bit of twisty country road fun.
We found that generally, it succeeds but still falls short on driving excitement, even with the 340-horsepower hybrid system and adaptive suspension that come exclusively with the Platinum trim.
Competition in the non-luxury large sedan segment is almost gone. Three rivals — the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, and Nissan Maxima — are being discontinued in 2023. That leaves the Accord Hybrid and VW Arteon. Some shoppers might consider the Genesis G80, Audi A6, and Volvo S90 mild hybrids, all of which cost more and aren't likely to be cross-shopped with the Toyota Crown. Based on appearance and premium content, though, the Crown can proudly hold its head high in that crowd.
All the Platinum's performance enhancements come at a serious penalty to fuel economy. Toyota estimates this version of the Crown will return 27 mpg in combined driving — a fairly unimpressive figure compared to other sedans with non-hybrid powertrains. The current Avalon V6, for instance, produces a bit less power and has a 26 mpg combined estimate, as does the BMW 540i with its marginally less potent turbocharged inline-six. On paper, the Crown Platinum's powertrain seems heavy and overengineered without much benefit to the driver compared to other options.
