Ok I bitch a lot about people hating Diantha but the arguments I see against Geeta are also really annoying

Firstly: 98% of people who dislike Diantha or Geeta end up comparing them to Cynthia at some point. Stop it. Cynthia is INCREDIBLE, and was my favorite champion for a very long time, but I don't see fans holding the male champions to the standard of Cynthia nearly as much as I see people do with Diantha and Geeta. Please ask yourself why you do that. Figure yourselves out.

Secondly: the argument that Geeta hate is somehow more justified and "encouraged by canon" because a fair amount of gym leaders dislike her to some extent is plainly stupid. I am sure, then, that you have absolutely loved every boss you've ever had and been 100% happy with how they manage things and that most workplaces are not at all inherently miserable to some extent. Because of course, most institutions under which we work all have the best interests of the employees baked into the very fibre of how they operate and that burnout is not at all rampant at any job you go to. You are so right, it is all absolutely a reflection of just Geeta and her personality. Christ. 🙄

Thirdly: I get really tired of "the battle sucked" as the main argument to dislike a character. Sure, if that's all you want to base your opinion on, then fine. Not going to stop you. But I do think you are intentionally robbing yourself of some genuinely interesting characters and how they might potentially influence how you interact with a piece of media when you pointedly choose to only focus on one aspect of them. Hell, you can still see Geeta as just a bad boss who tortures her employees (loser mentality, but you do you), but that's still something to work with and makes for an interesting character when explored further and in relation to other canon characters. You can hate her, but she is far from boring.

Fuck, you don't need to like Geeta, you don't need to like Diantha. I acknowledge it is harder to get into Diantha's character due to her very limited appearance in the games, but I don't see people making the same arguments for Lance, who has the canon personality of a sheet of cardboard, or for Leon, whose entire characterization is "Unbeatable Golden Boy Champion Man." At least Diantha has a canonical acting career, and is extremely busy in her life, which makes a good argument as to why she is so absent in the games. Already that gives so much context to who she is as a person and why she is the way she is. I would argue that perhaps it is more a reflection of your lack of creativity or lack of willingness to be creative with character interpretation.

You don't need to like these characters. But the same arguments I see made against them are for the most part thoughtless, boring, and pretty misogynistic.

Look, there are a lot of words that I would use to describe Aegon, but maniacal isn't one of them. Hell, most of his irrational actions this season have been in response to his toddler being murdered, and no one offering him any comfort or support while he flounders in a position he wasn't properly prepared for and DIDN'T EVEN WANT IN THE FIRST PLACE.

They really depicted Aegon being kicked over and over when he's already down and wanted us to cheer about it. I am absolutely disgusted. The writing/directing couldn't be more biased if they tried.

Yes, how dare Aegon ruin his mom's chance to reconnect with her ex-bestie by not just sitting in his bed, waiting to be slaughtered. How fucking evil of him 🙄🤦🏼‍♀️.

This pretty much confirms to me that we were never intended to like or even moderately sympathize with Aegon. We were only ever supposed to view him as one of the big bads of the series.

Thank God for Tom Glynn-Carney. I really do think he's the only person who deserves any credit for how good of a character Aegon has turned out to be. He infused him with so many depth and complexity, and through sheer force of will managed to transform the shit they've given him to work with into a phenomenal performance.

A Handful of Headcanons

These are, uh, kinda unhinged.

I love Nemona with my whole heart and soul, but I almost always write her (and you, dear reader) as being insanely oblivious because I just can't help myself. Every time I saw her in my Scarlet playthrough all I could think was “You wanna kiss me so bad you look stupid” because that is exactly what she’s like.

Her friends have been telling her for the past Arceus knows how long about her crush, but she never understood where they were coming from. Her obliviousness is completely impenetrable, it’s insane. They’re all pulling their hair out by her inability to recognize her own damn feelings.

Like, it’s to the point that her friends think she’s worried about people’s reaction to her being gay. Penny will casually tell Nemona that everyone was fine with her being gay or bi or whatever but Nemona’s just genuinely a dumbass when it comes to romantic feelings. 

(It’s funny, really, because anyone that would have a problem with her sexuality would never voice it lest they get their ass kicked but I digress.)

But when she realizes it? It’s fucking over. Her entire perspective has changed and she is now a new person. She now spends her nights staring at the ceiling plagued by thoughts of you. She could never fall asleep when thinking about holding your soft hand, or playing with your hair, or feeling your lips against her own. Occasionally, her thoughts become unsavory, and it never fails to make her feel like a complete creep because she shouldn’t be thinking of you like that.

When around you, she manages to act pretty normal. She’s too distracted by you to be overthinking her own feelings. The most she’ll do is just… look at you, but kinda intensely.

She’s just in so much awe at your existence, how you could look so beautiful, so elegant, just sitting there. Your every action sets her heart ablaze. Please give her affection, she deserves it even if she can be inexplicably stupid at times.

Cynthia would be such a wife-guy, it’s unreal. I have given this much thought. Sometimes I think about those alignment chart memes and everytime I do I think about the champions in regards to how they would treat their partner and, without fail, Cynthia and Leon fall into the wife-guy section and I will not elaborate further (that is a lie I will elaborate if asked). 

People across the world look up to Cynthia as a pillar of strength, as a serious badass who could curb stomp you with a single look. These people have no idea how much of a nerd she is, but they sure as hell know how much she loves her wife. 

Every interview she’s ever in, she will bring you up. No matter how much you might beg or plead her to, to avoid the embarrassment of her unabashed declarations of love, she will not stop. She cannot stop herself even if she wanted to.

She is the definition of relationship goals. All of her interviews have comments like “get you a girl who will talk about you like how Champion Cynthia talks about her wife” under them. 

And she absolutely adores your embarrassed reaction to them, too. You just look so adorable when you’re flustered. Don’t worry, she won’t tease you that much, that’s not really her style. She’ll always make it up with hugs and kisses and chocolate and anything else your heart may desire. She loves you more than anything else, after all.

Geeta is lowkey a sugar mommy, no matter what. Certified Girlboss™ over here is so busy, which she’s not inherently against as a workaholic, but it does prevent her from seeing you.

And so whenever she does get time for you, she will spoil you. Gift giving is her way of showing affection, at least when it comes to you. She’s practically made of money, please spend as much as you want. It’s her treat and you deserve it. Don’t even think about pulling out your purse or wallet, she will not let you pay. 

During quiet moments in her day, she’ll pull up a store on her phone and scroll until she finds something you’d like. She’ll be scrolling through fancy-smancy stores during an important meeting or when talking to someone like Nemona or Clavell because she just thought of the most darling thing to get you and she needs to find something suitable this instant. And she’s not slacking off or not paying attention, either, she knows exactly what is being said around her.

She’s also shameless. On more than one occasion, someone’s seen her looking for fancy, incredibly expensive lingerie. They’re incredibly embarrassed about it, but Geeta doesn’t care. She is in no way flustered or worried, just amused by their reaction.

If you don’t live together, she’ll totally send packages to your house or apartment. She’ll usually tell you, but sometimes she just doesn’t and suddenly you're opening your door in the morning only to be greeted by several packages. 

Not so much of a headcanon as much as it is a concept, but Courtney and Shelly pining for the same person. That’s it, that is the thought,

These two are their own brands of unhinged, and they would absolutely rip the other to shreds if it meant winning your heart. Courtney is just batshit insane. She’s feral. She’s completely unhinged and would go to any lengths necessary to get you by her side, no matter how much she has to dirty her hands to do so.

Shelly is also unhinged, but she’s far more calculated. She’s part of the brains behind Team Aqua, and so she’s not going to take action without considering all her possibilities first. She’ll go to the same lengths Courntey will go to, but she'll consider all her actions before making a commitment.

There is very little you can even do in this scenario. They would choke each other out with their bare hands if it meant having you. Don’t think this can end in dating both, they would never tolerate the other. They’re just going to continuously fight each other, try to one up each other, until one of them snaps. 

Drasna is severely slept on. I don’t even have a grand vision to put here. There is no idea, there is no headcanon, and there is no scenario. All you get is the concept of Drasna.

Just like… look at her. She borders on milf and gilf, she is decorated in dragon bones, she is sweet and kind and could kick your ass. She is gentle and loving but changes into cold and savage when in the midst of battle. 

She could curb stomp your ass any day of the week, and you (by which I mean me) would thank her. Not that she ever would. She cares about you too much! If you did battle her, she would attempt to go a bit easier on you, toning down the intensity a bit, but it slips out every now and then.

Also, do you think she’d have fangs? That’s how all the dragon tamers are in my head, so it’s not really Drasna specific. Actually, don’t answer that, she totally does because it’s my fanfic and I get to make the rules.

Anyways, Drasna would totally live in a cute little cottage. She’s from Celestic Town (apparently), so she likely prefers a quieter, humbler lifestyle. That is to say, you get to live with her in a cute little house that’s surrounded by nature and is also covered in dragons. You get to unwind at the end of the day by sitting in your cute little garden with her, and isn’t that just the dream?

…. How do we feel about gilfs? Like, in general. Milfs are pretty unanimous, I think. We all love a hot mom, but what about hot grandmas? I say that like the Pokemon grandmas are hot which I don’t think they are (except Cogita, obviously) but like… is there a consensus on this?

I don’t know man, when I look at Agatha and Bertha and Opal it’s just like… that’s a grandma. She’d bake you cookies and ask you about school or work. Agatha has an implicit risk, as you will be jumpscared by her ghosts. She’s also a little bitter and would totally just bitch about the people that get on her nerves. She’s old, she doesn’t care about anything anymore.

Bertha is the kind grandma who always asks if you want to help her make the cookies (she will not be offended if you decline). She’ll ask how your life is and will give you so much useful advice. She’ll also tell stories from her youth, and she looks so happy when she does it. She’s just nice, that's all I have to say.

Opal. Oh Opal. This specimen already has the cookies baked when you show up at her door unannounced. She knew you would be coming. Come sit down and complain about your life. She wants all of the gossip. Tell her everything, especially about your love life. Be careful about what you tell her, though, because she will not hold back when giving you her opinion.

Sorry I couldn't help myself. I had to write this out. I’ll go back to the regular headcanons.

Regular is a strong word. I desire Sada carnally. She is broken and I can fix her, okay? I have thought about this a lot, and I would subject you to all of those thoughts in incredible detail if I was strong enough to truly capture her image.

Real talk though. Sada is hesitant to fall in love again. She’s gone through a messy divorce before, and doesn't want to go through that kind of thing ever again. But she couldn’t help but fall in love with you, which leads to one of two things happening.

There’s the realistic option, that her love for you will make her work even harder towards finding paradise, which basically just leads to how the game plays out. She spends more and more time in the crater until she decides to move into it and eventually gets got by Koraidon, but you don’t know that. It would suck, but you would not be totally alone as you would have Arven there, going through the same thing. At the very least, he’ll turn out slightly better (until he has to tell you that Sada’s been dead for Arceus knows how long). 

But that’s sad, so I present to you the ideal option, that her love for you makes her realize how damaging her workaholic nature has been. She’ll be able to take a step back from her work, from the time machine and Area Zero, and just be able to live in the moment with you and Arven, like a normal family. She starts working as a regular professor. Hell, she might even start teaching at Naranja, where she’ll get to tease Arven everyday.

Anyways, regardless of what happens you get to be Arven’s stepmom, and that makes it worth it because he deserves a good parental figure in his life. I love him, he is my son, and he deserves the world.

Speaking of milfs: Lusamine. Hear me out. Technically, there are three types of Lusamine. There’s Sun and Moon Lusamine who is completely unhinged and selfish and will stop at nothing to get her way. There’s Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon Lusamine who is also slightly less unhinged and will stop at nothing to get her way, but she’s doing it for a greater cause (although it’s still kinda selfish but sometimes it’s the thought that counts). Then there's the anime Lusamine, who is actually pretty normal. Not unhinged or feral or incredibly selfish, just a mother trying her best for her two kids. 

All three of them are near and dear to my heart, but, to me, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon Lusamine reigns supreme. She’s the best of the other two, where she’s both unhinged and trying to be a good mom (after the Ultra Necrozma business goes down, anyways).

When she becomes more adjusted, not worrying about saving Alola from an unworldly entity, she’s incredibly supportive, both to you and to her kids. Speaking of kids, if you don’t support Lillie and Gladion with your whole heart, she will cut you off. Her family is important to her, especially after losing Mohn.

Writing this, I realize that I might just be invested in giving these kids better lives, but whatever. Lillie will open up to you pretty quickly. She wants to do all kinds of mother-daughter activities. Please just spend time with her, she will love you forever. Gladion takes a bit longer, but he’ll cave to your kindness in time. He won’t admit it, though, he has an edgy persona to upkeep.

Or maybe you're into an evil bitch and you want selfish and crazy Lusamine, which is also understandable. She’ll do anything for you, and I mean anything. She would be pretty controlling though, and she might love the Ultra Beasts more than you, but that’s the price you’ve gotta pay if you want her unhinged.

Oh and also, please don’t look into Ultra Wormholes or Ultra Beasts. No matter what version of Lusamine you’re into, just don’t. Lusamine would never recover if you disappeared like Mohn did.

I’ll end this with Marnie, because I like her. She’s kinda quiet and maybe even a little shy, but she’s adorable and loves you with her whole heart and soul. Her quiet nature, though, is lost when you start doing… basically anything. Whether you’re battling or studying, she’ll be your number one cheerleader.

When you’re battling other people, she’ll be hyping up your every move. You're her girlfriend, you're obviously up to snuff, and she’ll remind you of that fact constantly. She’ll even bring in Team Yell to help out. She wants the entirety of Galar to know how strong you are. 

But she’ll cheer you on quietly, too. When she senses you're overworked or stressed, she’ll be bringing you blankets and hot tea before you can even complain about your problems. And when you’re settled in, she’ll bring you curry and huddle into your side. She’ll even get Morpeko to cuddle up to you. Feel special, Morpeko won’t even do that to Marnie, and she would complain if it wasn’t making you feel better.

If you’re battling against her, she won’t openly cheer you on like normal. She’s a gym leader, she can’t just go throwing a match because she loves you! But she’ll compliment your strategy when you're doing well. Team Yell won’t be cheering for you, though. 

Also, Piers would be totally chill with you. He couldn’t be intimidating even if he tried, he is a literal twig. He just wants his sister to be happy and safe, and mans knows you would never do anything to hurt her. Besides, someone has to tell you Marnie’s embarrassing childhood stories and baby photos.

reading update: DECEMBER 2023

what's up gamers!!!! 2023 is over, and before I can make a post reflecting on every book I read I need to talk specifically about what I was reading in December. I was lucky enough to end the year coming out of a pretty dire depressive fug, and I celebrated by going buckwild reading as much as possible and placing so many holds at the local library that I will, probably, come to regret any day now. such is the price of being in love with life again, I guess!

let's talk about it!!!

what I read:

Buffalo is the New Buffalo (Chelsea Vowel, 2022) - a collection of Métis speculative fiction short stories. Vowel's stories didn't always quite land for me, feeling as if they would benefit from another round or two of revisions and a bit of elaboration, but even when they fell a little flat the concepts were promising. I especially adored the story "Michif Man," in which a mid-twentieth century Métis man is gored by a radioactive buffalo and develops strange powers that he uses to defend his community, told through the fascinating framing device of a 21st century scholar's speech making a case for Michif Man's existence. I also really liked the closing story, "Unsettled," which felt like really cool old school sci-fi: five clashing characters alone burdened with the responsibility of tending to the rest of humanity frozen in stasis, with each character serving as a mouthpiece for a vastly different perspective and set of values about their Indigenous identity. hit or miss collection for me, but the hits hit much harder than the misses missed.

The Bandit Queens (Parini Schroff, 2023) - this book was genuinely so so hard to put down!!! the story follows a group of women in a small Indian village as they decide to start solving problems by murdering their husbands, turning to Geeta - whose widely believed to have killed her own husband years ago - for advice. the only problem is that Geeta didn't kill him, he just walked out on her. and now she's caught in a RAPIDLY tangling web of murder, blackmail, and hidden motives among women she's never let herself get close to. it's a dark comedy, to be sure, but also surprisingly heartfelt, exploring the countless factors - gender, class, caste, religion, motherhood, beauty - that keep Geeta and the other women apart as well as the forces powerful enough to pull them together. it's a book about the power of friendship and also the power of going ape shit.

Small Game (Blair Braverman, 2022) - a VERY different book from Bandit Queens on every level, but equally hard to put down! Braverman is something of a professional wilderness survivor, and decided to write a story about a similarly experienced young woman, Mara, signing up for a survival-themed reality show where everything goes wrong. one day the camera crew simply fails to show up, and everything shifts when the contestants are forced to shift from surviving for show to actually fighting for their lives. a book that's gross and tender in equal amounts; Braverman is a very good storyteller and I'm strongly looking forward to anything else she puts out.

Are You My Mother? (Alison Bechdel, 2012) - a gorgeously drawn and terrifyingly vulnerable graphic memoir. a spectacularly brave endeavor; while I would never discount the tremendous artistry of Bechdel's more well-known Fun Home, I cannot imagine the terror of writing something like this about my mother when she's still alive to read it. absolutely ruinous if you yourself have any remotely complicated feelings about your mother, I will tell you that much!!!!

The Heart Principle (Helen Hoang, 2021) - Helen Hoang is so good that I didn't even count this as my romance novel of the month; this was just a book that I sincerely wanted to read. apparently quite a few reviewers on goodreads whined about how this shouldn't qualify as a romance novel because it's too sad, to which I say those people are fucking wieners. Heart Principle gets heavy, sure, with protagonist Anna navigating the sudden illness and death of her elderly father, but at the same time she's finding happiness and new ways to be herself and having the best sex of her life with resident hottie Quan, who's been a gem of a supporting character in this series since Kiss Quotient. it gets sad as hell, for sure, but it's also a mature, touching, and sexy story of two people developing a bond that encourages them both to embrace life and grow together. also, hi, Anna finding out she's autistic is SUCH a source of joy and eventual self confidence for her and it's SO nice to read.

Out There Screaming: An Anthology of New Black Horror (ed. Jordan Peele, 2023) - listen. it's a very good short story collection, filled to the bursting with some of the best writers in the game. there are very few stinkers in the bunch, which is really impressive for a collection with so many stories. but. it very seldom felt properly... scary? spooky, creepy, mysterious, supernatural, sure. but I want to be scared!!!! fuck me up!!! Us got under my skin and scared me in a way that I still think about years later, and I was expecting something similar from an anthology edited by Jordan Peele. so on that note I would actually really strongly recommend this is you like being a little spooked but not terrified!

Kiss Her Once for Me (Alison Cochrun, 2022) - this one was the romance novel of the month, voted on by my patrons, and incidentally my patrons should go to prison. listen. this book sucks shit. god, this protagonist sucks. I know the point of this kind of story is for characters to start in a place where they're flawed and you want to see them improve as people, but Ellie is just so endlessly whiny that I don't want to see her improve, I want her to shut the fuck up and stop using her anxiety as an excuse to be wildly unpleasant to everyone else. the chemistry between the main characters was what I call the "because I said so" variety, by which I mean there was no chemistry despite the narrative insisting repeatedly that there definitely was. (incidentally, Ellie had way better chemistry with the man she was fake engaged to, meaning I was actually really rooting for the hetero option for once.) also Cochrun is apparently a huge swiftie and referenced Taylor Swift a truly unwell amount of times in this book. dismal all around.

Mammoths at the Gates (Nghi Vo, 2023) - Nghi Vo can do absolutely no wrong and is one of the authors whose new releases I will ALWAYS be showing up for. Mammoths at the Gates is the latest in the Singing Hills Cycle of novellas, and sees the cleric Chih leaving their quest for stories in order to return home to Singing Hills Abbey after years on the road. they're excited to be home, but nothing is as peaceful as they'd have hoped: an old friend has been promoted, straining their relationship, and a beloved mentor has died, creating a complication when their family come to lay claim to the body. it's a book about death in the best way, by which I mean it's very much a book about life, and I read it all in one delightful morning racing to the gentle shock of the ending.

what am I reading now?

God: A Biography (Jack Miles, 1995) - this is a book rec I scooped from Oh No Ross and Carrie and it is. such a weird reading experience, but I'm enjoying it! this God dude is nuts!

Masters of Death (Olivie Blake, 2018) - I'm not very far into this book yet, and I can't decide if the prose is fun or annoying. maybe both!

Normal/Flying/Enigma - or 'Larry is a goddamn Christmas present, and here's what I found when I unwrapped him'

... Fucking Larry, huh? Mad guy. Absolutely unhinged set of pixels. He's got as many interpretations as days in the year - autism, depression, the working man stereotype, 'just a dude', to name a few - but... and I know this is a bold claim, but I think I've got him figured out. I've already meta'd him before on a smaller scale, and concluded that Mister Quiet, Calm and Collected here is actually a secret showman who loves crowd approval, so let's carry on.

Let's work our way under his skin, yeah? You just sit there and eat onigiri king, take a well-deserved break.

Let's start with the obvious: Larry has no clue who he is. He gives you the Facade TM, tells you he hopes you have no need to put on the same front as him, and then during his rematch says this on why he loves Normal types:

... Which is all well and good, right? Fair, valid, pretty regular guy - except oh no wait, hang on, he is literally the least ordinary trainer in this franchise.

This right here is a perfect example of the duality of Larry already, and we've just started. He's a showman, an exhibitionist in the Pokemon arena, and he duel-serves as Elite Four and gym leader.

Just to put that into context for those fans who are newer than my veteran ass, no one does that. Even those who got promoted later - Lance, Koga and Wallace, unless I'm forgetting anyone else - have never wielded two titles simultaneously. And even in their promotions, Lance, Koga and Wallace keep their damn types. They don't master a whole new one, at the highest of battling levels, on a goddamn whim because their boss said to. Whether he likes it or not, by the established standards of this series, Larry is a fucking genius. Even those with mixed teams don't hold type mastery to this degree. Whether or not you personally found him easy or difficult to defeat either time is not the point - literally, no one's doing it like he is. He trains four entire new team members, between his three jobs (because oh yeah, he's got another one), to the late fifties/early sixties in levels and acts like it ain't shit. That's endgame levels to anyone else, the culmination of their eighteen-badge journey or their literal years of training - for Larry, it's fucking LEISURE TIME. Man's doing this in front of Netflix.

... And we're supposed to believe he's NORMAL? And the thing is, I don't even think he's gaslighting us, at least not consciously - he genuinely believes this. This is his normal.

No wonder Geeta sticks him in the gym right next to Area Zero. 90% sure he could solo the place if you gave him a few hours to go and catch the right team. Don't even know what we're doing here, to be quite honest. Might as well go home and hug the Skwovet in my own lounge, the adorable little bastard. What the honest fuck.

My man, take a look in that mirror as you munch those delicious rice balls. There ain't a single thing regular about you. Larry seems to have no clue that his life is anything but standard - he walks around wearing a facade. His penultimate mon, which I've covered the significance of before with Flapple and Hassel (and with Larry himself here), is Staraptor, a lone wolf, who leaves the flock upon evolving to live alone, and yet his ace Flamigo only functions well in a group. Just a quick compare-and-contrast between the dex entries of them both here:

Thing is, right... if he walks around wearing a facade, why does he? In fact, whilst we're on the subject of his team, why doesn't he take his clearly vacation-themed team ON A VACATION?

Look at these guys.

Palm trees, tropical birds, blue skies with clouds, and... well, Staraptor's clearly his favourite. Man's got a holiday-themed squad, which leads us to another core point:

Larry doesn't drown himself in work because he likes it, he does it because he doesn't have anything else.

Logically, Larry must make bank. We don't know what the gym leaders get paid - though for the first time, we know that they definitely do, thanks to this:

And not only does he get paid from this, but he's in the Elite Four - every sensible conclusion says that this man has to be one of the highest-paid trainers in Paldea. And he's got a third job that we don't even know about. Bearing in mind that every other adult NPC in this game seems to get along just fine with one or two jobs, I don't think we need to remotely worry about Larry's finances.

And he doesn't particularly like any of his jobs, so he doesn't do them for love... and if he doesn't take any time off, he must be drowning in potential time to take off...

So, why doesn't he go on holiday? Why does he drown himself in work he dislikes when he has no financial need to; why does he live a lie; why doesn't he find out who he is?

Well, there's only one thing that really connects all that together, isn't there?

Larry's life is a void because he's alone.

When people are lost, they throw themselves into work to find purpose. What's the point of going on holiday when you've got no one to go with? This man does embody a stereotype perfectly, but it's probably not the one you think. It's much simpler - 'money can't buy you happiness.'

He tells you about this loneliness himself, in a way.

Larry has normal and regular interests, in a world where he is anything but, and people only want to be surprised. No one gets him, whether because they're not on his battling level, or because he's too ordinary. And when no one gets you... how are you supposed to get yourself? However introverted we are, we experience ourselves partly through others. He has the Elite Four, who are 100% a found family, but... the problem with that is that they accept him at face value because they love him. Which is amazing and all, we adore that, but it means no one gets under his skin.

And the further problem of that is that he's no happier deep-down. And that's not on his colleagues, not at all. Rika is relaxed and easygoing, Poppy is a child, and Hassel... well, Hassel is drama, Hassel is married. Hassel has his own perfect love story already. Hassel has already seen someone a little bit like Larry before - directionless, depressed, unsure of his own self - and he went and promised him forever anyway. (Hello Brassius, I see you king. Be careful on that windmill.)

... And that... yeah, that's kind of the crux of it all. Larry needs him someone very much like Hassel; someone who sees through every layer of facade, someone who accepts. (... I realise this is me right now, and yes, I do volunteer as tribute. Come here, you beautiful fucking not-normal man. <3)

Essentially, what I'm saying is...

Larry needs a partner... and I don't mean another Pokemon one.

But, as sad a conclusion as that is... he's learning, by the end of your time with him.

(Can we talk about the chef lady in the background, by the way, who is ignoring her TikTok to listen to his conclusion? What a sweetheart.)

We've taught him to open himself up a bit, to start embracing the new and the different. We've started to help this man, and if that isn't the most worthy thing my Nuzlocke son Juan here has done in his adventure through Paldea that wasn't helping a sick dog, I don't know what is.

As much as they annoy us sometimes, happiness is other people. Other people who see your soul, and smile. Perhaps he doesn't even need a romantic partner... perhaps he just needs the world's best friend.

But whatever it is that he needs... let him go on holiday, Game Freak. Let him be him, and very happy because of it. Give him a Hassel who isn't Hassel, and a month off at a certain DLC festival to spend with them. Larry exists in a club of one - he's too talented in the same breath as he's too average.

(Personally, I think he should take Katy, but... hey, that's me and my vanillacupcakes agenda. And the fact her ace is a Normal type who likes dessert.)

About Larry... He's Interesting

Now, don't let me stop you from seeing Larry as you'd like, but I'm not much in the camp of perceiving him as an anxious or delicate person. More than anything, he just seems very tired. Which is an obvious part of the 'gag' that is his character. He's an overworked salary man with three jobs within the pokemon league. So, long post ahooy!

Larry, in my opinion is a pretty sure footed guy. [I don't think he would have so many important positions if he weren't. Geeta appears to value strength and stability in her choices.]

Anyway, He speaks his mind openly and concisely, and is not afraid to admit that he likes simplicity. But, he's so passive aggressive it's almost comical. Which, I guess is typical business man behavior. I've taken some pleasure in going back over his dialogue/monologue through bulbapedia. Larry's response to your visit, Geeta has tasked you with inspecting the gyms for her:

"It’s time for a meeting with the boss, but...seems I’ve got a visitor with no appointment instead..."

Well, excuse me, sir. Apparently, Larry really doesn't like his time intruded upon or wasted, and he may possibly dislike surprises. Even Champion Geeta is aware of this. Before a rematch with Nemona (I can't recall if this is after you become a Paldea Champion or not) if you choose the Treasure Eatery as your battle arena, she suggests that Larry may not like that. I have said this before somewhere but...how territorial.

I suppose that's not supposed to be much, but it's the little things like that, that fascinate me. In a way, I find Larry mysterious. So some quick points, or questions I have:

Where does Larry's mind go when he spaces out?

What business does he actually conduct when he isn't battling?

What are Geeta and Larry's conversations like if he describes an encounter with her as 'cornering'?

Why on earth does she have him, specifically, working three jobs? [ Ignoring the office worker gag ]

Rika has been described by Hassel as 'farcical'. I wonder if this is the same for Larry. The move he gives you for defeating his gym is called 'facade'. As his Staraptor uses the move in battle: "I think it’s time to show you that real life isn’t all just being true to yourself..." Larry...what do you mean by that...?

Something to end with: "I see... So you’re helping the boss free up some time to enter a tournament at the academy?"

Aight so what do we all know about the Paldean Crater?

We know that it's a research area, we know that the Paradox Pokemon are coming from tbat area, and we know its STRICTLY off limits to EVERYONE.

We got in out of desperation with 3 other Stuxents. All highly leveled and trained.

Nemona

Penny

And Arven.

We have modes of transportation, we had 3 other people that could hold their own and were pretty well matched.

Penny- as the mastermind of Team Star- needed to be able to stand above her recruits.

Arven- the guy that went up against Titans frequently (yes with us, but he was still hunting around those areas long before us too!)

And Nemona: A Student Champion that loved to fight!

And even then all of them, plus the MC, were Hilariously outmatched in the crater.

All of them could upkeep against the Paradoxes, startled, confused and trapped within, but they could upkeep without fear.

And then you reached the ending, where you all LITERALLY watch an AI of the Professor try to murder you all and then dies.

All because of Tera Energy.

Below the readmore is a fuck ton of Larry Headcannons because I am Unwell about this man.

Larry was originally from Sinnoh. Sinnoh is based on the Japanese Island of Hokkaido, and with the way the Treasure Eatery is designed, and the pose Larry takes in his photo, he comes across as Japanese. Plus, Sinnoh specifically has Starly as the regional bird.

Starly was actually his very first Pokémon. He attempted a Pokémon Journey as a kid, but after a little while he just wanted to go back home. Still, the battle experience was good for him, and he really cared for his Starly as a pet.

He moved to Paldea go the Academy for either high school or college, wanting to ensure he got a good job in the future. The Academy seems to host all ages, and it's rather huge, so I think it could serve as a collage campus as well, but idk.

Occasionally he'd fight with his Staravia as a hobby and to make a bit of money whenever things got tight, picking up Dunsparce and Komala as well. Still, he ends up pretty good at it.

While he's there, he meets a younger Geeta who challenges him to battle. He does well enough to impress her, and they don't quite become friends, but Geeta trusts him and sees him as a particularly hard worker. Maybe they're acquaintances in the same friend group.

Eventually this leads to assigning him to the Medali Gym, and then becoming an Elite Four member.

The Medali Gym is in the Treasure Eatery because the first time he ate there, the food really reminded him of home, so he became a regular. He was put on the spot by Geeta to come up with where he wanted his gym, what he wanted it to look like, and what the gym challenge should be. Himself and the cook get along okay, and he told her about how stressed he was about it because he's not creative or intresting in the slightest, and she suggested just hosting him in-house, and he agreed.

Him and Rika get along fine, she thinks he's fun to mess with but he doesn't mind it so badly.

He tries to be nice to Poppy, but he's still a very boring person, so she likes him okay but prefers the other two.

He very silently does not like Hassel because he's loud and frequently interrupts Larry, but Larry would never cause workplace drama so he just... treats him like he would anyone else. With how famous the Elite Four are, any noticeable degree of dislike could garner some serious attention, which he doesn't want. Hassel thinks Larry is nice but introverted, a testament to just how anti-drama Larry is.

His relationship with Geeta has slowly shifted from mutual trust and neutrality to her still feeling the same about him, but him developing a grudge against her but refusing to speak up about anything that's bothering him. She's his boss and the top champion, and he wouldn't be caught dead actually saying anything to someone that powerful.

One time, while Iono was doing a series of inviting other gym leaders to her livestreams, she was very certain she would be unable to get Larry in front of the camera, and repeatedly told her chat that she'd try, but make no promises. But she appealed to his intrest in food, so they sat down and had a meal for the stream, talking a bit about his perspective on Pokemon training.

But, for some reason that not even Iono understands, her chat went fucking crazy. Like, Jerma-Chat levels of insane. Larry vows to never let her film him again, but she becomes absolutely determined to get him back on someday because of just how popular that stream got.

While at some Gym Trainer conference or party or something, Larry was off to the side of the group not talking to anyone. Like, at the watercooler, coffee machine, or snack bar for as long as he could pretend to be busy. Grusha joined him there because he got overwhelmed too and needed to sit down and be quiet for a minute. The both of them shared a look and a toast to mutual suffering, and neither of them bothered each other. From then on, they've been quite friendly, and whenever trainers gather, they stick together and try to find somewhere quiet to sit.

For his relationships with the other trainers, it's just the quieter they are, the better he likes them. He doesn't have a lot of energy left after work, so whoever he is with has to learn to chill, or otherwise be quietly disliked and avoided. As for when he likes people, he'll pay for their food sometimes, and just chill out with them and have conversation, a lot of the times complaining about work.

Tried to think of potential options for Rika’s long list of exes (and/or casual hookups) limited to the Poke-European regions of Paldea, Kalos and Galar. For some reason my brain immediately went to Malva. Bea, Tulip and Klara are some other potential options but I mostly like the idea of Malva, less than a week after dramatically breaking up with Diantha, meeting some Spanish rockabilly Butch at a bar and becoming far too attached to someone who leaves Kalos the next morning. Any other ideas for who else Rika might have been with?

Ok this is something I wanna have more time to think on bc I feel like the potential is so fascinating and I wanna devote more energy to it later BUT I do wanna address the bit about Malva bc that in itself is so so good to me.

Specifically bc Malva is a reporter, right? This is gonna be one of those times where Rika probably stuck their strap where they shouldn't have and didn't think things through very thoroughly lmao. And honestly? I love that for them. Idiot. Idiot. Idiot. Idiot. God.

Imagine Malva, feeling all sorts of turbulent emotions and hot off an intense relationship, going to a gay bar and finding Rika and having a passionate, whirlwind tryst.... And then getting slam dunked in the trash the next morning cause Rika has a flight back home to catch.

There would be blood. Oh my god poor Malva would explode like a volcano. The smear campaign against the Paldean League would be legendary. It would be all over the Kalos news, how it's come out that there are allegations that the Paldean League misuses funds, how they're out of compliance in all sorts of ways, how one of their very own elite four members takes bribes and allegedly has an extensive criminal record that they've tried to keep secret from the public.

Thank god Geeta is so fucking thorough in how she runs her league. Thank fucking god she has all the receipts to prove how none of this is true, and that she runs an exceptionally tight ship and everything is in order just as it should be.

The whole debacle is thankfully a bit of a flash in the pan, as Geeta is able to extinguish it pretty quickly but the whole thing has left her smile feeling noticably more strained for a few weeks. Rika has never been in trouble quite like this before I think, and it's not the fun kind of trouble.

Rika does their best to avoid Malva like the plague after that. Malva is one of the few people they're genuinely afraid of I think. And honestly? I think Malva would revel in that.

What connection do you think Geeta has to Area Zero? Her ace Pokémon is a Glimmora, which can only be found in Area Zero, and the league/academy was responsible for funding the professor’s research iirc.

I have... a LOT of questions about Geeta that I am really hoping the DLC clears up in some capacity

One of the most important ones in terms of this ask and just in general is exactly when she became top champion. Was it before Sada / Turo started their research-- and by extension was she in charge of / knew about the money being afforded to them? Her relation to the professors and their tera research is majorly going to affect exactly how much she knows about Area Zero and everything going on down there. I also have to wonder if she was there while Team Star was getting bullied and whether that whole situation / the entire staff leaving is relevant to how she runs the academy / conducts her relationship with the school and Clavell. But that's a rabbit hole for another time.

Anyway. On one hand you have the possibility that Geeta came in after the tera orb research is completed-- we know that the league more or less separated themselves from the professors as soon as they got the tera orb so if this is the case I wouldn't doubt that Geeta just has no fucking idea about any of the time machine stuff. This also explains why Miss Micromanagement wouldn't stick her nose into all that drama or at least try and interfere with stuff / deal with it herself. Atm I'm assuming this is the case because Geeta seems surprisingly uninvolved with anything professor wise, and her personality seems to imply she would be a little more entrenched in all the paradox nonsense if she knew about it

On the OTHER hand we have the possibility that Geeta joined before the tera research and maybe even gave the professors the money. Personally I'm not super stroked about this interpretation bc 1. it leans way farther towards the "geeta is evil" side of things, which I find particularly boring, and 2. the amnt of questions it offers gives me pause. If Geeta knew about the professors' research, it begs the question of why she wasn't hounding them / checking up on them at all. Geeta is pretty involved with / protective of Nemona and talks constantly about the future of Paldea, so her knowing about but ignoring Arven seems strange to me. It's possible she did know about the professors but that they just hid the time machine / AI really well, but honestly I'm not sold on that. Knowing Geeta, she would have bothered them / done checkups if she knew which makes me wonder why she's so disconnected from th professors even moreso than Clavell. Unless she did know and was hiding something, but again, League Chairwoman secretly evil is kinda. eh.

Anyway, I DO think she has a connection to Terapagos and Area Zero somehow, but that it may not necessarily involve the professors or anything we've seen thus far. I adore making AUs where she's more intertwined with the gods of the crater (and the status of the crater as a living thing but that's another post) and in general love exploring the idea, but as of now canon seems to be implying she either knows very little about the professors' / crater's whole Deal or she's hiding smth. I'm leaning towards the former
