Days Out: 17 Tudor Buildings to visit in the North West
Days Out: 17 Tudor Buildings to visit in the North West
Learning about the Tudors and the Stuarts is a big part of the history curriculum at school. It’s also a period in history which is filled with larger than life characters which children are naturally drawn to. Henry VIII is one of the most interesting Tudors and one who everyone seems to know something about; whether it’s his six wives, or the founding of the Church of England, he was a king…

Robert MacFarlane - THE EDGE: A NAME-MAP
Shuttlingslow, Shining Tor, Wildboarclough, Wizard’s Well, Adder’s Moss – when I think of Alan Garner’s fiction, I think of – no, I think in – place names. His prose bristles with them. He relishes the ways that place names hold story tight within themselves, curled and sprung, ready to flicker forth into the imagination. Place names have a poetry in his work – but they also possess power. They record history – but they also force the future into form.
Alderley Edge itself is a landscape of such ancient acculturation that almost no part of it has gone unnamed – from the shafts and adits that riddle its interior, to the outcrops and escarpments of its surface. So when thinking of how to celebrate Garner’s novels, and their influence upon my own sense of place, I decided to abandon narrative. Instead I tried to find a visual means of representing the clasp between place and place-words in his prose.
The result is the map you will see on the next page. It is a name-map of Alderley Edge and its surroundings, in which the contour lines are made of all the toponyms to be found in the Weirdstone trilogy, including those in the titles of the three books: The Weirdstone of Brisingamen, The Moon of Gomrath and Boneland.
To make the map, I first had to abstract the Edge into pure contour, and then I had to abstract the novels into pure place name. So I took the 1:50,000 Ordnance Survey map of Alderley Edge, then I picked out the main contours in black ink, then I followed those in pencil on tracing paper, then I reversed the tracing paper and re-traced the lines so as to avoid inversion when I then transferred the pencil lines back onto a clean sheet of white paper. This left me with faint pencil tracks of the Edge’s contours, stripped of all other topographical information. Those tracks – which bunch together in the north-west of the page, indicating the escarpment itself – became the guidelines for the place names.
To gather the toponyms themselves, I read the trilogy through in a single sitting in the course of an afternoon and long evening, noting every place name mentioned. I realised as I read that Garner’s place names mix the actual, the fantastical and the celestial: from Sinadon (an ‘old name’, as Garner calls it, for Snowdon), through the invented Earldelving, to the Pleiades, the constellation that Colin studies through the astro telescopes of Jodrell Bank in Boneland, seeking the resting place of his sister.
Then I inked the place names along the pencil lines of the contours – and at last rubbed out the pencil to leave a name-map.
What follows here, by way of postscript, is a full list of the place names mentioned in the Weirdstone trilogy. Even when arranged in columns and alphabetically, if spoken aloud and in number they have the air of an incantation.

"Green is the prime colour of the world, and that from which its loveliness arises. No water, no life. No blue, no green. So here is my mega update of what i've been up to!
Saturday was spent mostly hungover, let's pass that.
On Sunday I went to Wilmslow Show with band, and played there and had a look around. It was sunny and nice, and it's always good to play with the band.
Then that evening I went to a Foden's Youth Concert at Gawsworth Hall near Macclesfield, which was EPIC coz i've watched the big bands play there (Foden's, Black Dyke etc) but this time I got to play there myself! I got to accompany Glyn Williams paying Napoli (my favourite cornet solo, but he played it on euphonium which made it doubly epic).
Monday was a day of rest and packing and stuff.
Turesday I went to Hereford to see the lovely Beth, we took her dog on a walk and sat in the garden.
Wednesday we went into Hereford (infinitely jealous of the amount of shops so close by, you have to go waaaay far out of my home town to get that amount of decent places). I bought a Tardis mug! I'll probably pu a picture up in a bit) and some postcards, then wen't swimming (HOLY CRAP) and chilled for a bit.
Thursday I went to Bristol! (exciting times). Visited the Gromit exhibitions in the Cribbs Mall, did a bit of shopping, mainly for postcards for my room next year. I bought one that says "I love you more than cheese" which makes me happy because of Naomily feels.
THEN we went to Pizza Hut (yay) and FINALLY watched The Cornetto Trilogy. Absolutely fantastic, mainly for the atmosphere and all the nerdery around there. The guys who dressed up - you are awesome! The World's End is fantastic and you should go and see it! Didn't get back to Hereford until 4:30am, meh.
Friday I got up super early for Panic! at the Disco tickets (which I got, yayayay, Manchester look out!) then got the train to Cardiff to visit Amy (damnithirschberg). Got a tour of Cardiff which is huge! (it is a capital city, but still, huuuuge). Went to Cardiff Bay and got sunburnt and ate ice cream, then went to see The Frozen Ground with Nicolas Cage and 50 Cent (35 pence, maybe?). Strange seeing Vanessa Hudgens not being in High School Musical, doing dugs and being a prostitute, all I can see her as is Gabriella, haha. Got a train home and crashed out due to lack of sleep.
Today I slept for aaaages, but then went out for a meal for Nanna's birthday. Used a voucher I had for my birthday for a free bottle of wine (saving £8.99, hell to the yeah!).
So now i'm catching up on MDK/DailyGrace, then watching some Friends and having a brew.
All in all, a busy but really great week or so! :D
