The Villa d'Este is a 16th-century villa in Tivoli, near Rome, famous for its terraced hillside Italian Renaissance garden and especially for its profusion of fountains. It is now an Italian state museum, and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (x)

Page 8 of the I. Arbus & Sons Summer 1928 Wholesale Dress catalog, showing summer dresses of printed silk crêpes. These dresses come in a broad range of sizes (14 to 44, which translates about to modern dress sizes 2 to 16) which suggests they were expected to sell well.
Tumblr media
"Novel, Summery, Stylish Prints."
"813: Colors: navy with white dots, and navy with tan dots. The stylish polka dot silk crepe so extremely fashionable this summer is used in this elegant frock. It is made in the separate two-piece style. A very pretty jabot in front is trimmed with contrasting colored silk. The skirt is box-pleated in front. Sizes 14 to 42."
Polka dot fabric was fashionable in the late 1920s and early Depression years. Dress has a very low waist, almost fingertip-length. Asymmetric buttons on front left with drapery. Pale piping on front fastening, waist, cuffs and skirt pleats. Dark piping on slightly pointed neckline. "Two-piece" means that the skirt is mounted on a separate slip top and worn under the top, which acts like an overtunic. This keeps the skirt lines straight and neat.
"814: Colors: Assorted color combinations. One of the finest printed silk crepes of the season is shown in this remarkably beautiful summer dress. It is made in the two-piece effect; has a pleated jabot and the skirt is neatly pleated in front. This most unusual dress is made in sizes 16 to 40."
Dress has a wild Art Deco abstract pattern like clouds or rainbows. Very wide pleats at bottom of overtunic. Very narrow flaring pleats at skirt front match scarf hanging from point of asymmetric neckline at left of center. Model is also wearing an awesome zigzag pattern cloche hat.
"815: Colors: assorted beautiful patterns. A most unusual printed silk crepe especially well adapted for summer wear is shown in this elegant model. A neat lace trimming at the neck, a novel pleated apron-effect in front give an astonishingly youthful appearance. Sizes 16 to 44."
Dress has a wrap front fastening at the left hip with a tie, piped edging. The fabric print appears to be a dark background crowded with small dots of different sizes and colors.
It's my birth month, so as a fashion history treat, here's the cover of a 1928 wholesale catalog from I. Arbus & Sons, New York, who I think were connected to the famous photographer Diane Arbus, who would have been five years old when this catalogue came out.
The catalog is 24 pages, sepia-toned black-and-white, of various styles of dresses fashionable in summer 1928, 14 by 21 cm (5.5 x 8 inches). Many of the fashion illustrations appear to be photographs, but the dresses the models are wearing are either painted on or very heavily retouched. There are a few purely painted illustrations.
I'm going to see about loading up more pages this month. Meanwhile, here's a start.
