Episode 217: Megure's Sealed Secret (Part 1)
There’s a serial killer attacking girls with Ganguro style – that is to say, they have artificially tanned skin and blonde hair, or as Mouri puts it, "they look like they came from a jungle." Sonoko says it’s really popular. All the girls were attacked while they were coming out of their car, and all of them were wearing jewelry from the department store where Ran and Sonoko were buying sweaters. Ran gets lost in the parking garage and ends up finding the fourth victim. In addition to the fact that she’s dead, there's something weird about the body, according to Ran and Sonoko. Megure is having issues because he keeps having PTSD flashbacks to some other case in the past, when his decoy was killed.

Shibuya is where these girls gather. Many come from the suburban areas of Tokyo. Some fly from as far away as the northern island of Hokkaido on weekends to shop for their costumes and to show off on the street called "Center Gai." Shibuya has been known as a center for young people since the 70s. It is filled with boutiques, cafes, karaoke houses, nightclubs, theaters, restaurants, cd shops, manga (comic book) cafes, and video arcades. Under the bright neon signs of these stores and surrounded by so many people, it's almost like being in "Blade Runner." Every weekend, nightclubs such as "Pylon" and "9 Love J" are packed with these Gals. They dance the "Para Para" together, in sync with one another.

the reason gyaru isnt getting popular again
Tumblr media
here is my take on this. the reason why gyaru isn't going to get popular again is because you guys won't let new substyles get created.
you see a gyaru in a substyle you've never seen before and automatically say they aren't gyaru. all gyaru substyles have been created at one point it's not like they just appeared out of nowhere so why act like new substyles can't be created?
the whole point of gyaru is to go against the beauty standard and be sexy (obvi sexy is different for everyone) as long as they fit in with the gyaru lifestyle and do the makeup with the main points of gyaru make now then I don't think we should be calling people not gyaru. one exception is "clean gyaru" cause that basically takes away the whole point of gyaru

At first glance, gal fashion may seem like an imitation of its western counterparts, but at the core of this movement was the motivation to dress like people who were far less distant: Shibuya 109's charismatic shop staff, magazine models and domestic musicians. By adopting this style, the gals unconsciously created a localised version of the fashion trends that had originated on America's West Coast. In doing so, they built a movement that was not only aligned with Japanese culture and social context, but was also linked to each gal's physical characteristics. - Yusuke Arai, social anthropologist
