oh man, not to be one of those Linux scoundrels about it, but congrats on taking the plunge! would love to talk shop anytime you wanna brag about your setup, troubleshoot, commiserate, scour the wasteland for a midweight graphics editor that's usable by humans, etc.

Listen, this is the first time in my life I didn’t wait for my computer to die on me, so there was no desperate scramble to replace it with a prebuilt PC.  I've been tracking sales and picking up refurbished and open box parts for the past few months, and my setup fucks somewhat severely—mind you, I don’t game, so I decided to forego the GPU entirely and focus on performance and future-proofing.  My coworker gave me his old chassis last Friday, so I had everything except the CPU, and I was fixing to pick up an open box R5 9600X at Micro Center after work yesterday…but in the afternoon, the R9 9900X suddenly went down to $309 on Amazon, and my hand slipped. Nevertheless, this is approximately what I'd have shelled out for a shitty laptop or mid-tier desktop tower with the SSD soldered on and Windows baked into the price.

Windows is basically unusable now, even after you swap it out for the Titus MicroWin OS without bloatware, telemetry, and tracking—I'm not even gonna bother running it on a dual boot system while I get used to Linux, I'm just gonna rawdog the Mint distro after I assemble the computer. You will know when I've made the switch because I'll go mad with power at being able to access system settings and delete a load-bearing directory.

So this is my playable dude in the save I started the other day. If memory serves, he was a game-generated NPC sim from another save that I edited a bit, liked, and saved a copy to my sim library. Whatever the case, he was in this game folder's library, and because I'm lazy af, I just grabbed him, plonked him down in one of the one-bedroom houses in a copy of my WIP Meadow Glen edit and then set his cash-on-hand to $0.

His name is Cameron and he's an Ambitious an Neurotic but Good Supernatural Fan with a Photographer's Eye. He wants to be "Leader of the Free World," but for now he's cash-poor until he manages to successfully interview for a job in Politics. I have no idea what I'm doing with this save overall -- Legacy sort of thing? Just fucking around? Yeah, probably just fucking around-- so for now he spends a lot of time...

He consigns whatever he finds that he can't use, which for now is his only source of income. When he gets some skills, he can start checking for work in rabbitholes to add to his income, but for now dumpster diving is what he has and probably what he'll have for a while. Because he probably won't get into the Politics career on his first attempt...

finally got Returnal on sale and this is such a niche thing to point out but it might have the most robust graphics benchmark test i've ever seen in a video game

which would be a lot more impressive except that after some tinkering it's showing that i'm thoroughly GPU-bottlenecked even on minimum settings which makes me upset so this is bad actually

If I were more technologically educated when it came to modern day video games I think the funniest thing to do would be to make mods for modern games that force them to run on 8GB of ram and 2GB graphics cards. Because it would be funny.
