How to Buy a Computer for Cheaper

Buy refurbished. And I'm going to show you how, and, in general, how to buy a better computer than you currently have. I'm fairly tech-knowledgeable, but not an expert. But this is how I've bought my last three computers for personal use and business (graphics). I'm writing this for people who barely know computers. If you have a techie friend or family member, having them help can do a lot for the stress of buying a new computer.

There are three numbers you want to know from your current computer: hard drive size, RAM, and processor speed (slightly less important, unless you're doing gaming or 3d rendering or something else like that)

We're going to assume you use Windows, because if you use Apple I can't help, sorry.

First is hard drive. This is how much space you have to put files. This is in bytes. These days all hard drives are in gigabytes or terabytes (1000 gigabytes = 1 terabyte). To get your hard drive size, open Windows Explorer, go to This PC (or My Computer if you have a really old OS).

To get more details, you can right-click on the drive. and open Properties. But now you know your hard drive size, 237 GB in this case. (this is rather small, but that's okay for this laptop). If you're planning on storing a lot of videos, big photos, have a lot of applications, etc, you want MINIMUM 500 GB. You can always have external drives as well.

While you've got this open, right-click on This PC (or My Computer). This'll give you a lot of information that can be useful if you're trying to get tech support.

I've underlined in red the two key things. Processor: it can help to know the whole bit (or at least the Intel i# bit) just so you don't buy one that's a bunch older, but processor models are confusing and beyond me. The absolutely important bit is the speed, in gigahertz (GHz). Bigger is faster. The processor speed is how fast your computer can run. In this case the processor is 2.60 GHz, which is just fine for most things.

The other bit is RAM. This is "random-access memory" aka memory, which is easy to confuse for, like how much space you have. No. RAM is basically how fast your computer can open stuff. This laptop has 16 GB RAM. Make sure you note that this is the RAM, because it and the hard drive use the same units.

If you're mostly writing, use spreadsheets, watching streaming, or doing light graphics work 16 GB is fine. If you have a lot of things open at a time or gaming or doing 3d modeling or digital art, get at least 32 GB or it's gonna lag a lot.

In general, if you find your current laptop slow, you want a new one with more RAM and a processor that's at least slightly faster. If you're getting a new computer to use new software, look at the system requirements and exceed them.

I'll show you an example of that. Let's say I wanted to start doing digital art on this computer, using ClipStudio Paint. Generally the easiest way to find the requirements is to search for 'program name system' in your search engine of choice. You can click around their website if you want, but just searching is a lot faster.

That gives me this page

(Clip Studio does not have very heavy requirements).

Under Computer Specs it tells you the processor types and your RAM requirements. You're basically going to be good for the processor, no matter what. That 2 GB minimum of memory is, again, the RAM.

Storage space is how much space on your hard drive it needs.

Actually for comparison, let's look at the current Photoshop requirements.

Photoshop wants LOTS of speed and space, greedy bastard that it is. (The Graphics card bit is somewhat beyond my expertise, sorry)

But now you have your three numbers: hard drive space, RAM (memory) and processor (CPU). Now we're going to find a computer that's better and cheaper than buying new!

We're going to buy ~refurbished~

A refurbished computer is one that was used and then returned and fixed up to sell again. It may have wear on the keyboard or case, but everything inside (aside from the battery) should be like new. (The battery may hold less charge.) A good dealer will note condition. And refurbished means any flaws in the hardware will be fixed. They have gone through individual quality control that new products don't usually.

I've bought four computers refurbished and only had one dud (Windows kept crashing during set-up). The dud has been returned and we're waiting for the new one.

You can buy refurbished computers from the manufacturers (Lenovo, Dell, Apple, etc) or from online computer stores (Best Buy and my favorite Newegg). You want to buy from a reputable store because they'll have warranties offered and a good return policy.

I'm going to show you how to find a refurbished computer on Newegg.

You're going to go to Newegg.com, you're gonna go to computer systems in their menu, and you're gonna find refurbished

Then, down the side there's a ton of checkboxes where you can select your specifications. If there's a brand you prefer, select that (I like Lenovos A LOT - they last a long time and have very few problems, in my experience. Yes, this is a recommendation).

Put in your memory (RAM), put in your hard drive, put in your CPU speed (processor), and any other preferences like monitor size or which version of Windows you want (I don't want Windows 11 any time soon). I generally just do RAM and hard drive and manually check the CPU, but that's a personal preference. Then hit apply and it'll filter down.

I'm going to say right now, if you are getting a laptop and you can afford to get a SSD, do it. SSD is a solid-state drive, vs a normal hard drive (HDD, hard disk-drive). They're less prone to breaking down and they're faster. But they're also more expensive.

Anyway, we have our filtered list of possible laptops. Now what?

Well, now comes the annoying part. Every model of computer can be different - it can have a better or worse display, it can have a crappy keyboard, or whatever. So you find a computer that looks okay, and you then look for reviews.

Here's our first row of results

Let's take a look at the Lenovo, because I like Lenovos and I loathe Dells (they're... fine...). That Thinkpad T460S is the part to Google (search for 'Lenovo Thinkpad T460s reviews'). Good websites that I trust include PCMag, LaptopMag.com, and Notebookcheck.com (which is VERY techie about displays). But every reviewer will probably be getting one with different specs than the thing you're looking at.

Here are key things that will be the same across all of them: keyboard (is it comfortable, etc), battery life, how good is the trackpad/nub mouse (nub mice are immensely superior to trackpads imho), weight, how many and what kind of ports does it have (for USB, an external monitor, etc). Monitors can vary depending on the specs, so you'll have to compare those. Mostly you're making sure it doesn't completely suck.

Let's go back to Newegg and look at the specs of that Lenovo. Newegg makes it easy, with tabs for whatever the seller wants to say, the specs, reviews, and Q&A (which is usually empty).

This is the start of the specs. This is actually a lesser model than the laptop we were getting the specs for. It's okay. What I don't like is that the seller gives very little other info, for example on condition. Here's a Dell with much better information - condition and warranty info.

One thing you'll want to do on Newegg is check the seller's reviews. Like on eBay or Etsy, you have to use some judgement. If you worry about that, going to the manufacturer's online outlet in a safer bet, but you won't quite get as good of deals. But they're still pretty damn good as this random computer on Lenovo's outlet shows.

Okay, so I think I've covered everything. I do recommend having a techie friend either help or double check things if you're not especially techie. But this can save you hundreds of dollars or allow you to get a better computer than you were thinking.

In terms of OS: I am most familiar with chrome but I am becoming ideologically opposed to Google. I absolutely will not use Windows - Windows 10 is going to go away soon and Windows 11 has built in AI. It also costs money. I am considering Linux, but I've heard conflicting information on if it would be good for me. My only knowledge of code is from not even a full semester of an HTML class (but the teacher did say I picked up coding pretty fast). Some people say I have to have some knowledge of computer science to use Linux, others say it's actually really beginner friendly nowadays. Some people say it's extremely limited in what it can run and others say more and more things are able to be run on linux with or without an additional program to make it run. There's also a bunch of "distros" that can be chosen from, though I've seen a source say ubuntu is the only one that can be run on a laptop. What's true and what's not? Should I use Linux at all if I don't know shit about code or Computer Science? Are certain distros better for beginners?

Please help if you can help in any way, whether it's recommending brands, exact models, or linux/linux distros..

again... being in a relationship meant that it takes two hands to clap; two to tango. in some scenarios, he’s the one messing up and saying something to spike a thorn in your chest. in others... today–right now–it was your wrongdoing of saying something that may have gone out of line to prick him in the heart. it wasn’t something big but... it was definitely hurtful. two days have gone by and it’s been quiet, too quiet for your liking (or his, but he won’t admit it).

[🐰] soobin  two knocks on his door and he knows who it is when no one is saying anything from the other end. the door squeaks open and he tries not to look as he remains seated on his bed, legs stretched out, back against the headrest and eyes stubbornly glued to the book he’s holding. it’s painfully obvious that he wanted to see you, to have you here but when you’re actually here, it looks like he’s conflicted. stepping in and closing the door behind you, it takes courage from within yourself to approach him slowly. it’s like approaching a wild animal; in fear that if you move too quickly, they’d dash off. being with soobin felt like that sometimes. the uncertainty scared him, and the way things moved too quickly has him in a blur so he appreciates that you’re being careful. when you reach close enough to him, you extend an arm out from behind your back to reveal that you have a packet of almond milk as a peace offering. upon laying eyes on it, and hearing your voice quietly saying i’m sorry, soobin-ah, he reacts faster than his mind can process it. peeling the drink from your hands, tossing it to the side and gripping your hand to lure you down onto him so he can hug you. he hated how you both know that him hugging you like this was to offer you comfort but in reality, he loved having you in his arms as a reminder that all was well again between the both of you.

[🦊] yeonjun a no-brainer that yeonjun would be in the dance practice room, nearly dancing his feet and soul away from the frustration he feels. he hadn’t even noticed that you were standing there, nearly giving him the fright of his life but... once that initial surprise dissolves, he hates how his heart blooms at the sight of you. yet, the reminder of what had happened, that he was left feeling hurt in the end, strikes back and it hits him in the chest that he turns away from you. his heart pounds in his chest hearing your footsteps approaching him in the quiet of the room with his music fading away. he feels a tap on his shoulder and he lifts his head up, meeting with your lowered gaze through the wall mirror in front of him. he intends to take his time but... he can’t. he can’t ever pretend like you don’t matter to him, so he doesn’t. never once has. his body ignores his plea from his mind and he turns around. his brows furrow when he sees you’re holding out a note to him. he glances up to your face for confirmation or a hint, but when he sees you’re remaining quiet, he takes your note and unfolds it to–his hard gaze softens at the feeble scribble of ‘i’m sorry, jun-ah. you mean the absolute world to me and i’m sorry. convenience store ramen? my treat. :)’ he looks up from the note to meet with your eyes this time, watching as your pupils tremble but seeing the light sparkle when he realises you’re smiling because he’s smiling.

[🐯] beomgyu beomgyu stubbornly remains looking at his computer screen, making no moves to pause the game even when he knows you’re right here next to him. his eyes snap shut when he feels torn at the way he knows you’re waiting for him to finish his game first before wanting to talk to him and how bloody selfish for you to be so selfless to think about that in a time where he wants to hate you? he bites the inside of his cheek and exhales deeply. your eyes peek at his screen to see that his character remains unmoving and you gasp when he lets his character die off. that cues him to remove his headset and put it down onto the table next to the keyboard. he still doesn’t say anything but to you, it was a green light to do what you came here to do. carefully, you move to stand behind his gaming chair so you can roll him back just enough for you to come around to sit on his lap. as you sink in his embrace and wrap your arms around him, the soft confession of i’m sorry, gyu-yah. beomgyu already knows it’s game over. “this is unfair,” he murmurs into your neck, arms circling around you tighter, “you made me lose that game. you owe me twice as much cuddles.”

[🐿] taehyun telltales of taehyun being in the studio became increasingly obvious when each stop, each place you’ve tried finding him proves that this has got to be where he’s at. you’re proven correct when you give the door a knock and the sounds of music seem to quiet down. twisting the door open, stepping in, you gently nudge the door to a close behind you. clearing your throat, hands behind your back, you fiddle with your fingers as you try to muster up the courage to speak as you stare at the back of his head, body slightly covered by the chair as his back faces you. what started out soft, gradually picks up in volume as you try to vocalise your apology. “i... tae, i’m sorry. i’m so sorry. i just–”you instinctively cut yourself off when he stands from his seat, turning around to face you. it’s like you’ve shrunk tenfolds watching as he takes the image of you in front of him. he heaves a deep sigh and spreads his arms out towards you, as if he’s beckoning you to come here. swallowing the lump in your throat, you drag yourself over until you enter his embrace and he immediately wraps his arms around you, clearly much better now that you’re here with him (and he is).

[🐧] kai kai stubbornly has his eyes shut even though he knows you know he’s not asleep just yet. his body reacts the second you step through the door that it takes every nerve in his being not to react (even if he wants to). he’s silent, clutching onto one of the plushies he’s held onto as he’s tried to sleep but... it’s to no avail when he shows slight movement to the sounds of you entering his room. he feels his bed dipping down a little, signalling to him that you’ve taken a seat by his side. he didn’t plan on turning to look at you but when he feels something else being pressed onto the side of his hip, he shifts in a way that he’s able to spot the molang plushie he’s got you a while ago, eyes meeting with yours briefly before he notices you’re using the plushie to cover your face. “y/n says they’re sorry, and that they miss you.” kai lets out a sigh and pushes away the plushie in his arms, then the molang covering your face. all he does is give you a small nudge and it gets you to lay down on top of him so he can curl his arms around you to bury you in his arms. it makes you sigh against his chest, arms crawling beneath the mattress so you can return the hug and he kisses the side of your head with a soft admission of i missed you. (and the way you hug him tighter with a nod confirms that you did just as much, too)

500 pages!! I can't believe how fast these numbers are going up, I'm learning that most webcomics cap at one page a day at most, so feel genuinely lucky to get all this.

I thought John was going to get a Badass Moment where he totally owned those imps in the living room, but he totally biffed it :( but if he'd won against so many enemies so soon, the victory might have felt unearned. I am really noticing the improvement in Rose and John's Sburb abilities - their teamwork in these pages is so good, with John absconding to the study and then Rose sliding the refrigerator into the cranny so the imps can't follow. Rose has great instincts here and is in such a stressful situation herself that I can't help but give her props for her work here.

I do think dropping the safe from so high was overkill, and that destroying John's house is literally the opposite of her job right now. I also think that if the refrigerator gets one more kill it will probably out-level John and therefore take over as both the client player and the main character of our story. So the two of them both have things they still need to work on, but, reading this gives the real sense that they're making progress, and that gives the story a nice momentum.

I also LOVE how the imps, collectively, have a lot of personality. Real video games can often struggle with this, where low level enemies are mindless things to kill that leave no actual impression, but Sburb has really cracked it. The gag where the imps will replace their jester hats with any other hat or hat like object is very entertaining to me, and the fact that they're really invested in the pogo ride for some reason is curious. Most likely they just think it's fun to play with, but I like to imagine that Slimer from Ghostbusters is a god in their society.

I've been thinking recently about what wikipedia terms the 'sad clown paradox,' where comedians have an above average chance of struggling with issues like depression. It's really easy to read John and his prankster's gambit through this lens, but part of me wants to read John's whole house through the lens. From its multiple generations of inhabitants to its decor to its new invasive species, it feels like the essence of the clown is infused throughout this ultimately sad and lonely house.

Under the safe in John's dad's study is a captchalogue card and a note taped to the wall. Inside the safe is another, scuffed up copy of Colonel Sassacre, along with some old papers and an unidentified grey object in the back. I don't know what I expected to be in here, either money or an authentic Joseph Grimaldi jacket, but it seems like the Sassacre book is a really important heirloom that each person in the Egbert family gets to own. I'll probably speculate some more on why Dad wants to save these items specifically once we've seen the papers.

From the antiquated politeness of the new commands, I figured the Wayward Vagabond had read the human etiquette book, but I did not know they'd eaten it. It seems counterproductive to eat information that might be helpful. Unless that's how their species learns and retains things, in which case, great work and it's clearly paying off. Kind of sucks how the author of the etiquette book is British though.

Even now the Vagabond is being polite, it seems really dangerous to have these commands coming to John from an outsider, given how he loses all awareness of his surroundings when he's being commanded like this. But given the logo on the outside, the computer and bunker the Vagabond inhabits were built by someone, for some intended function. So what's the deal? Is the system of giving commands built into Sburb or not? Is there somebody else more competent who is intended to use this command panel, and the Vagabond has stolen their place somehow? Does Sburb really feel like it needs to mind control its players directly? Is the game going to get so difficult and complicated that this is the only way to win? The Vagabond doesn't seem like they have a goal with John beyond obtaining a can opener, but what will happen if whoever's supposed to be using this computer shows up?

New fic bit: Long Live the Empire

Leia looks out at the massed Imperial fleet, the remains of the Fifth Fleet and a major victory to obtain their surrender. The Republic forces are massed in a show of strength, the coverage by holonews blanketing the media. Grand Admiral Danner Ashbrough brought 500 ISD and smaller ships with him out of the 5,000 he once commanded. He and the senior officers' agreed to stand trial for war crimes, and those junior officers and enlisted with him would enter reorientation and amnesty programs. For now, the meeting will seal the agreement and handle the nuts and bolts. Ashbrough is pleasant, if oddly distant.

"I'm aware not everyone came with you, Grand Admiral." Leia studies the man's face. Most officers at flag rank have sabacc faces that rivals a duracrete wall for lack of expression.

"It is good that you are aware." The man could be standing in the Allisandre's ballroom, holding a glass of Chandrilan sparkle-wine. "I made this voluntary. Those who wished to leave were dispersed to other fleets."

"The Third, Seventh, and Eleventh?" Three thorns in the foot of the Republic with an estimated strength of 10,000 ISD class, at least four Supers, and thousands of smaller ships. "We'd appreciate some help with that. Mitigate your crimes with helpful information."

A small, polite smile. "We don't speak to them often, but they agreed to take in the die-hards."

Leia reaches out with the Force and encounters something like a shield around the man's mind. Luke, in her field of vision, looks puzzled and shakes his head. A text appeares on her datapad.

It's as if every mind on those ships is Jedi-proofed. Music, mathematics, even building model landspeeders.

"Grand Admiral Faro heads the Eleventh, I presume, with Marinth as Grand Admiral of the Seventh's remains." Now to pry open a vault. "I have intel that an officer named Pyrondi has the Third."

Something itches at the back of her mind and she glances at the battle computer to her left. All the Imps have their weapons powered down, hyperdrives offline, as agreed.

"Indeed?" Left unsaid that she was a protege of Grand Admiral Thrawn - like Rear Admiral Hammerly, Commodore Barlin, and others who formed a nucleus of the Trident Fleet. "Thrawn was said to have sent a core of officers with Faro and when she transferred."

"There's nothing on her. Her entire file is redacted. Not even a date of birth or a Homeworld."

"I met her briefly, once, at the Ascension Week games when I was still a Rear Admiral. I am afraid she did not make any disclosures to me. However, you may find the reasons in the Archives of the Senate, under seal."

They can't access and he doesn't need to know that. A COMPNOR general's dying act was to make the archives for every agency down to vermin control inaccessible. Threepio's estimate was that it would take at least a century to slice, and that would be with top slicing droids working nonstop. It could easily take one thousand years as they did not know how many placements the lock had.

"There are things that not even Grand Admirals can unlock. However, I was alive when the reason for the redaction happened. The heart of it was your friend Saw Gerrera." That small smile again. "Pyrondi will have to answer for herself."

"Saw Gerrera was nobody's friend."

"He was, long ago, an ally of your parents." A fleeting smile, more of a quirk of the lips. "I can tell you that if he is alive, he will very much wish not to be if Pyrondi finds him."

"He's dead."

"So you say. However, Pyrondi will look for him until she turns up his body or his bones. I was there to evacuate the world he destroyed so completely that not even decay will come to the dead. The body count of Jegsziv totaled an estimated two billion with less than half a million survivors." That smile again, wider. Leia wishes she could see his eyes under the bill of his kepi. "Rhydonium gas released from an well on the sea floor - an act of terrorism and sabotage that killed half a world in their beds and choked the rest to death on their own blood."

"I've never heard of it." The itch is stronger, almost a burning. A glance at Luke shows he can feel something, too. "Where is it located?"

"Well, secrets take time to uncover, but the truth always comes out. I do hope that you will meet her one day. Until that day and after it - long may she serve, and long live the Empire."

The white flash is soundless, but the shock wave and the onslaught of molten durasteel impacts the Republic ships in seconds. The Imperials caused their cores to go critical, igniting hundreds of mini novas, obliterating most of the Republic fleet in the space of a blink and a breath.

Today, is the day. It's your turn playing, you started streaming. Everyone greeted you in the chat, sending your oshi marks in the chat. You smiled, "Hey guys, I'm streaming Just dance today! I was interested trying one thanks to Luca." You mentioned Your beloved Mafia Leader, that is currently not far from you. He's just on a different floor in the shared house.

When I first made the mod, I forgot that the Simoleons per hour were... well, hourly. I don't know why, like if I was tired or something, but that lead to the top level in the career giving sims $60,000 a day, which means $420,000 a WEEK... and since there's usually 4 weeks in an in-game calendar year that means $1,680,000 a YEAR...

I know veneer techs get a lot of money, but at some point this gets absurd. 😭

So I altered the hourly wages a bit. They're still wayyy more than average sims get for their jobs, but not like $21,000,000~ every human year.

Level 1 -> $250 (from $500)

Level 2 -> $500 (from $1,000)

Level 3 -> $1,000 (from $5,000)

Level 4 -> $5,000 (from $20,000)

Celebrity Scammer Branch -> $10,000 / M-F (from $50,000 / M-SN)

Seminar Leader Branch -> $7,500 (from $25,000)

If you still want the higher wages, they're still available with the original mod! <3 This is just for people who want a little more of a challenge. (emphasis on little, lol)

I wanted to ask you something, reading your posts, I really liked what you say about Munch, I wanted to ask you some curiosities about them that you have in mind - Ex: What do they like to do in their spare time? What hobbies do you think they would develop? Would they be the type to go on family outings with Dot and Scotty? What do you think? I loved your headcanons about them, Munch could go to a therapist, to better deal with themselves and their surroundings :D How do you imagine them adapting to technology? Using mobile phones ? Learning to use computers ?

munch is 110% a bookworm. reads quickly but voraciously, no preference between fiction & nonfiction, but you will see him more often with the latter.

for more hands-on hobbies, probably knitting at first. he clearly knew how to sew before meeting the lyons so this just gives him an outlet completely divorced from survival techniques. he gets super blushy & smiley when he completes his first sweater for scotty.

i think he'd love to go on family outings, but depending on where they're going, it'd be tough for him to illustrate his boundaries & fears. im thinking more along the lines of county fairs, amusement parks, farmers' markets, & basically anything with huge volumes of people combined with constant noise. i dont think he'd be one for amusement park rides at all, but thats ok bc i totally see dot as the one who goes with scotty on everything, while he & wayne wait behind like the worrywarts they are. i think he'd be good at the carnival games, though. like if scotty wants a big teddy bear he'll be like "ugh fine" & then john wick his way through the shooting games. im not sure about others where he'd be the complete center of attention, like the strength mallet thing, even though he'd get a ridiculous score since i think he's a lot stronger than he looks.

one of the first things dot gets him to help him adjust is noise-cancelling earplugs, which are especially necessary since munch doesn't react well to music or electronic visual media so irt scotty playing video games i dont think he'd have any idea what he's looking at. if he finds the willpower to sit through a movie, subtitles are an absolute must, & even then i think he can only handle old movies for a while since they aren't as demanding on the senses as contemporary cinema.

i dont think munch would go to a therapist, or that the lyons would want him to anyway, being that his bond with dot is bone-deep and, for lack of a better term, supernatural. modern medicine is just not equipped to handle a 500 year old living body that's presumably developed immunities/resistances well beyond the limits of a normal human. dot & munch learn to heal while in each other's company simply because they are the only other person on earth like the other. obviously dot is not a sin vampire but its my headcanon that she & munch share a strong psychic bond, too.

aside from the basics he learned as a hitman (operating vehicles, using phones), i dont see modern technology having any place in munch's life. its not that he can't learn how to use it, but he doesn't see how it would add or subtract anything to the way he lives. i think at most he'd have like a basic smartphone to keep in contact with the lyons, but its strictly a phone & not a multimedia platform.

it's kind of insane that it's gonna be a whole year and a half since I started using linux as my full time OS soon. in my opinion, it's a very good operating system and I only really have issues with certain (important and uninportant) windows engineering/creative applications, certain games, UI, and setting up a proper music production workflow. i also wish it were easier to synchronize configurations and stuff across computers but that is just a "multiple computers" issue.

it's been a really good experience 95% of the time, and i'd recommend it to most people who don't

(boring personal history stuff relating to computers below. at the end i explain some of the issues i've had and how i think i could fix them)

I fried my gamer laptop (obviously a windows machine) on December 6th, 2022 and had to fall back on what would become my favorite laptop, the thinkpad X220t. after juggling a few different unices/Linux distros, I settled on Linux Mint MATE. however, I couldn't do any actual work on that laptop other than like basic web browsing (which was all I needed at the time bc I was in community college)

after a while I managed to put together a pretty cheap desktop! i tried installing windows 10 on it and the installer refused because I was missing drivers for something. i could not figure out what it was, it might have been my CD drive, the hard drives I had, the nvme drive, the graphics card... so I went with what I was using on the thinkpad. Linux Mint installed without a hitch.

after I went to big boy college, I decided to upgrade my laptop since I needed a better portable computer. I was either going to get a 13" Macbook or a Framework, but I went with the Framework because I liked the ideals and the features, alongside some willful ignorance. ("It's a Mac, of course it's going to cost more! Those are super expensive computers!" I assumed, before dropping $500 more than I would have on the Mac I would have bought.) I also installed Linux Mint on the Framework.

Now, to expand on some of the issues I've had with Linux: Engineering applications, creative applications, very few Windows games, UX, and music production.

Engineering applications: I am going to college for ECpE, so I need to use certain programs for coursework/extracurriculars. The big ones are Fusion360, Altium, Solidworks, just most CAD/EDA stuff. (sidenote: Intel/Altera Quartus has binaries for and works on Linux, but it requires so much undocumented work that I had to piece together from compilation/simulation error logs that I consider it to be mostly broken from install.) It sucks that so many important applications are relevant to me/my future work and they don't have native Linux binaries, don't want to install under WINE, and/or require so much finagling that you'll go a little insane trying to get them to work. The FOSS alternatives are either much worse or considered fit for only amateur work. (AFAIK) KiCAD also lacks the collaborative aspects of Fusion360 or Altium, which makes it difficult to work with others who are on Windows and do use F360 or Altium. I could probably solve this through hours of tweaking, or I could just spin up a VM for F360, Altium, or Solidworks.

Creative applications: Everything I could say has already been said, but it's also not as bad as it could be. Krita, Pinta, Darktable all seem to be quite decent. Inkscape is okay. GIMP is functional. Blender is becoming more common in the creative industry, and is a definite rival to other 3D modeling software. I think that there's probably good excuses for Adobe to not release native binaries for Linux, but it would be really nice if they at least allowed or considered supporting/making it easier to run the programs under WINE.

Rare non-functioning Windows games: I rarely play video games anymore, and most video games I want to play work through Proton/WINE by default. (Thank you, Valve!) However, like one or two games I've tried do not work properly. I could see a big reason why: I have an Intel ARC card in my desktop. At this moment in time, the ARC cards are sort of iffy in the Linux sphere. I would recommend against other Linux users getting ARC cards right now, but the price is REALLY right and I would probably buy another one if not for certain political/humanitarian issues. I could probably fix this by getting a different graphics card, tweaking launch parameters, or simply waiting a year or two.

UI: I'm kinda blind. Not legally speaking, but I have a horrible prescription (>-10.00 in each eye before correction for astigmatism) and cannot see without my glasses at all. This is mostly a personal issue, possibly a Framework issue, but very high DPI screens give me trouble. Since fractional scaling does weird stuff, I have to raise the font size by a few points and increase the size of most of the UI elements in order to feel comfortable using computers long term. I also use darker themes on my desktop. This often breaks a lot of UI , making it hard/impossible to read button or labels. LibreOffice programs are pretty bad for this. It sucks.

Music production: This is possible using Linux! Sound on Linux is not that bad! However, attaining a "pro" production config is really hard. This can be solved by nutting up and reading the docs and watching 10 hours of youtube videos, or installing a distro with all the shit built-in and preconfigured. I've heard Ubuntu Studio is pretty okay.

In conclusion: Linux is pretty good. There's issues with it but the issues (IMO) are better than the Windows issues.

105: The Christmas Invasion - Season 1 Christmas Special: After the Doctor's regeneration, he brings Rose home to her family for Christmas, but collapses. Rose struggles with his new face, not sure if he's even the same person anymore. Prime Minister Harriet Jones deals with contact of an approaching alien spaceship, which has captured an Earth space probe. The probe contained a sample of A positive blood, through which they are able to control everybody on Earth with that blood type. They make them all walk to the top of the nearest roof and stand at the edge. The aliens demand that either half the world will be sold into slavery, or the 1/3 of the population with A positive blood will die.

Still unconscious, Rose and Mickey bring the Doctor to the TARDIS as it's the only place that's safe. Detecting advanced technology, the aliens teleport the ship aboard, along with Harriet Jones and some of her colleagues. They attempt to negotiate with the aliens, but several people are killed. Finally, the Doctor wakes up and exits the TARDIS, still feeling out his new form. He challenges the alien leader to a duel for the fate of the Earth, and they engage in a sword fight. The alien cuts off the Doctor's hand, but his recent regeneration allows him to regrow it, win the fight, and force the aliens surrender.

The aliens flee, but Harriet Jones orders the firing of a weapon they'd prepared as a worst case scenario. The alien ship is destroyed, angering the Doctor, who threatens to bring down Harriet's administration, spreading rumors that she is too ill to continue. Although both are nervous because of his change, the Doctor asks Rose to keep traveling with him.

152: The Long Game - Season 1, Episode 8: The Doctor takes Rose and new companion Adam to the future, on a space station in the year 200,000. Adam deals with culture shock from the future, but the Doctor notes that history seems to be off course, and that the culture, technology, and lack of non-human species aboard are signs that something has gone wrong with history.

They meet a journalist and sit on a news brief, where several reporters beam information directly into her head to broadcast out. An unknown person watches on a monitor and detects a glitch from one reporter. An alert interrupts the news session and announces that the reporter has been promoted to Floor 500. The journalist is jealous of this as supposedly the walls of Floor 500 are made of gold. The reporter travels up to Floor 500, where she is found to be a freedom fighter using a false identity, and is killed.

Adam leaves to go to an observation deck to get his bearings, while the Doctor and Rose continue to investigate. They find that Floor 500 is pumping enormous amounts of heat down to the rest of the space station, and get the journalist to begin questioning whether what she's been told is true, why nobody comes back from floor 500, why there are no aliens aboard, and why there it is so hot on board.

Adam meanwhile discovers a computer terminal and attempts to gain access to Earth's history, and leave a message on his mom's voicemail in the past, but is denied access as he does not have a brain chip. He goes to the ships medical center, where they are able to install the chip, a hole in his forehead that will allow his brain to interface with the computer.

The Doctor and Rose gain access to Floor 500 and go up, where they meet the Editor, who works for a creature called the Jagrafess. The Jagrafess runs the entire human empire, controlling it through selective information in the news feed broadcast. It also generates an enormous amount of heat, which is pumped down to the rest of the station to keep the Jagrafess alive. The Editor wonders at how he doesn't know the Doctor and Rose, as he has access to all the information in the empire, but has no record of them at all.

At that moment, Adam accesses a computer through his brain spike, giving the Editor access to all of his knowledge, including about the Doctor and Rose, as well as the TARDIS, including Adam's key. He plans to take the TARDIS to control humanity even earlier in it's history. The journalist had followed the Doctor and Rose up and overhears all of this, and accesses a terminal to revert the heating, and pump it back up, killing the Jagrafess and Editor and allowing the Doctor and Rose to escape.

The Doctor says that history has been set right now, and he takes Rose and Adam away in the TARDIS. He brings Adam back home, kicking him out of the TARDIS for attempting to bring back information from the future for personal benefit, and erases the voicemails he left his mother. He leaves with Rose, telling Adam to live a quiet life so that nobody sees his brain chip.

THE DISCOGRAPHY PRINCIPLE, Episode 6: Kraftwerk - or, Electro-Shock for President

I've actually been sitting on this one for a really long time. It's hard to think of anything meaningful to add in the presence of History itself.

TIME Magazine had this cute cover out on February 8th, 1993 — a guy sits on his computer, his left eye is prosthetic and the cables from the CRT screen swerve and swirl towards a purple spiral in the background. Big title in the middle, CYBERPUNK, and right under there a small blurb that reads like an amateur Steam developer trying to make his generic-ass game set in twenty-seventy-something appealing to you. It's mesmerizing to think that the early 1990s were still a time where you could legitimately hope for a cyberpunk utopia without hearing your own personal Seinfeld laugh track in your head. Of course this devolved into one of the foundational bits of reading in my teenage years: Ondarock's biographic pieces about specific artists and bands. Eddy Cilìa — one of the deans of Italian music criticism — wrote one about Kraftwerk that at one point says the following (translated to English by yours truly):

"… if Kraftwerk's music is still to this day all bent forward, lyrics and visual concepts still taste more like modern antiques than they do modernity. Theirs is a vision of the future hailing from a past when it was possible to imagine prosperous and tidy days to come, with squeaky-clean cities, immense green spaces, eight-lane highways overruled by giant electronic brains. Before the petrol wars and microchips. Before Blade Runner. Before cyberpunk. Before we realized we were fucked. Those who know that unforgettable William Gibson short story, The Gernsback Continuum (off of Burning Chrome) will understand."

Cue the BBC using Kraftwerk's Musique Non Stop and Electric Café to soundtrack William Gibson reading some of the bleakest bits off of Count Zero (I'm gonna link the program here, but unfortunately the bits where the tracks play have been muted, so there's that). I don't even find it infuriating or distracting or inappropriate, even: at this point cyberpunk as an aesthetic is modern antique, whereas cyberpunk as a collection of themes wildly oscillates between the hopelessly romantical and the unfortunately timely. Both of these things very aptly describe Kraftwerk's Electric Café, the last record with the classic lineup of Hütter, Schneider, Bartos, Flür. Electric Cafè, or Techno Pop for either irredeemable zoomers or the unlucky few who worked with the band from 1982 to 1986, sounds like someone trying really hard to be relevant: Sex Object is like one degree of separation away from Depeche Mode, minus the inherent sexiness of Depeche Mode — as retroactively superimposed as it may be — and as such laughable, and not in a good way. Basically the entirety of side one (perhaps even The Telephone Call, if Computer Love didn't already exist) would go stupid hard if it had come out on, for instance, in The Man-Machine era. Unfortunately the record feels too thematically unsound to work the way a Kraftwerk record usually works, mostly because for the first time ever the band seem to take the concept with actual seriousness.

So many people focus on the supposed future-proof nature of Kraftwerk which in retrospect kind of feels a bit laughable — it's like when some of these YouTube guys allow the possibility that the work of a band like Boards of Canada "still sounds fresh". It's good, obviously, but can we really close our eyes and pretend like no one ever considers making intentionally warbly sounding electronic music in the year of our Lord two-thousand-and-twenty-four, where people are falling head over heels for the new Oneohtrix Point Never record? Kraftwerk is dated, because Gary Numan and John Foxx and Depeche Mode and Afrika Bambaataa and the Soul-Sonic Force and Cybotron and Model 500 and Aphex Twin and Autechre and Deadmau5 and Avicii and Skrillex and NERO and Caterina Barbieri and DJ Haram and Suzi Analog and so many others exist and have, in their own way, dated. That is exactly what makes Kraftwerk the greatest. Their studio production mostly wears its age with confidence: sure, if you want to be terrible to it you could argue it sounds like a bunch of Apple IIe terminals desperately fighting for their life in the bathroom after a night out at Taco Bell, but that would fundamentally miss the core point which is that they very clearly fucking knew that this was going to happen. And even their lyrical optimism is much darker than most give them credit for. Like, seriously, stop and think for a moment: science fiction in the 1970s was all about aliens, everywhere. Isaac fucking Asimov, robot dude par excellence, wrote a book about aliens for the first and, if memory serves, only time in the year 1972, and then never again. The highway was a gleefully old fashioned concept to be excited about, and so was the train — more so than the highway, actually. They hopped back onto the zeitgeist with Computer World, but again, it was minimal, barren, and the lyrics used to bite. The German version of the title track, for instance, loves to remind the listener that "Interpol und Deutsche Bank, FBI und Scotland Yard, Finanzamt und das BKA haben unsere Daten da" — they have our data there!

A while back there used to be this great blog on this site called One Week One Band where they once did a week fully dedicated to Kraftwerk which explains most of the shit I would be going on in this post, and does so in a much more interesting and accurate way than I could ever; obviously so, since I'm writing at 3:20am because I had a really rough Tuesday night which fucked up my sleep schedule into unrecognizability. Anyway yeah I'm not even going to try to actually get into the lyrics, mostly because I never really gave a shit, minus the funny bits about meeting Iggy Pop and David Bowie from station to station back to Düsseldorf city and that bit about how they want to fuck an up-and-coming starlet (Big Black really upped the sleaziness factor in their cover, actually making it sound more like Kraftwerk's backstage activities — at least according to Wolfgang Flür — than Kraftwerk's recorded output); the short version is that it's simply insane to me that nobody ever bothered thinking "goddamn, this is simply too shiny and chrome and polite to be serious, and how the fuck am I supposed to take the robot disguise seriously, maybe they're taking the piss somewhat?", which is extremely egregious given the very nerdy humor on constant display in their lyrics and song titles — Antenna, for instance, reads like a dirty poem on a trade school's toilet stall, and I don't think I have to add anything to Ohm Sweet Ohm. But what do you know: as some of you might have guessed I like nerdy humor that makes no sense and fails catastrophically at conveying any sense of zest and class and sexiness, because Kraftwerk never meant to be fucking sexy. They wanted to make volksmusik, i.e. a literal German translation of popular music. They succeeded.

In case you're wondering, my favourite Kraftwerk record changes depending which one I've listened to the most recently, but gun to my head I would probably say Trans Europe Express. I spent a lot of time listening more or less exclusively to the German language versions of some of these records, and it's weird using the English titles for me, but ultimately it makes more sense. If it is to be volksmusik, in this day and age, it has to be musik of all volk, and as such of all folks, and statistically speaking there are more people speaking English than German — at least in my personal social circle. Anyway, the thing about TEE could be this: the beauty of it is that it has everything in itself, but the real kicker is that none of that is made explicit to the fullest. All of the sequenced hopping synthpop, the melancholy melodies of New Romantic, the drive and danceability of hip hop, a certain sense of coldness that post-punk as a whole would make its own — see Ian Curtis's obsession with this particular record (and, on a slightly different note, how the surviving members of New Order would go on to sample Uranium, which if you ask me might rank as one of the hardest interlude tracks on any record ever) — are here but in very throwaway forms, i.e. they do not make the case for themselves. In the moment of their conception, they must have been seen as ad-hoc arrangement tactics, perhaps even as a holistic compositional approach: they are not their own justification, nobody woke up and said "I am going to make a whole record about this here technique", as testimonied by the change in mission statement right in the middle of the making. The band had been recording trains to see if they could use the inherent rhythm in their motion to make something danceable, but they realized it didn't work because they'd have to be sped up to unrecognizability; so, they dropped the field recording/tape loop idea and recreated the groove in the studio with conventional drums. On the other hand, cue John Foxx turning into a Ballardian neon-lit dandy for his solo debut, extrapolating on TEE's sounds to better delineate a colder, more anthropic, more impersonal, more atonal and (why not?) perhaps more violent European landscape.

Sure one might argue that their reference landmarks are predominantly European, predominantly focused on the classical era of music (1600s-1800s, very roughly), predominantly if not entirely diatonic, but their opus very clearly works — it very clearly has worked, over and over again — as a potentially ever-expandable theoretical framework. Their minimalism became the empty spaces it left open, the boxes it didn't tick. As much inspiration as Kraftwerk drew from funk, a slight increase of the funk coefficient on the part of black artists in the United States invented techno, hip-hop, electro. Kraftwerk didn't, themselves, change the face of contemporary popular music, they "simply" allowed other people to reshape contemporary popular music a hundred times over. It feels like a miracle to listen to this music in the current day and age.
