So, I'm Reading the Death Stranding Novelization

(Which yes, is a thing that exists) I'm about a quarter of the way through the first book (of two), and for the most part its been exactly the same as the game with the added insight of the characters' unspoken thoughts. However, I just started a new chapter with some new book-only characters (possibly-- I never read many of the emails in the game lol) and boy does this thing go hard. It's a first-hand account of when the Death Stranding first started from two brothers aged six and four. And it is NOT pretty. This is from page 146 of my book:

Igor was the one who discovered his father's body in the bathroom. Their half-crazed mother had to cut the body down, lay it in the bathtub, and cover it with gasoline. Then she doused her own body and set both herself and her husband ablaze right in front of their children.

The world-building in the Death Stranding game is just ridiculous. It was my first Kojima game and once you get past the wacky stuff like pee and poop grenades, you really start to appreciate just how surreal the whole world is and the collective trauma everyone who survived went/is going through.

I'm actually weirdly fascinated by how WEIRD the world is despite being treated as perfectly normal by the characters. I created a whole music video about it (it's not very good but I'll link it anyway - surprisingly no spoilers).

I am not the best with words so I can't really explain how I feel about Death Stranding's world other than how much I like it.

Book three is done, and so is the trilogy! I finished this thing in two years, and I don’t know if I’m ever going to write that much in a short amount of time again. I’m a little sad that it’s done, but I”m looking forward to the next project. Maybe I’ll start posting more regular updates of that here.

Reading Mockingjay as an adult is extra devastating because. Of course the plucky teenager and her ragtag friends aren't going to sneak into a government building to kill the president with a bow and arrow. That's absolutely ridiculous. It's the kind of thing that's only possible in the kind of propaganda that Coin developed. But she's so good at it that in some ways she tricks the reader into thinking that's the kind of story this is, too--even after 3 books reminding us that pretty much everything that Katniss does the second she volunteers is manipulated by adults pulling strings to make propaganda in some form or another.

Reading fandom character analyses for 1990s visual novels can be kind of a trip because you'll come across this thoughtful and nuanced reading like something out of 19th Century Russian philosophical novel, then you look up the actual source material and the character in question is a bug-eyed, mitten-handed gremlin with permanent Dreamworks face and a recurring catchphrase about butts – but then I'm not really in a position to complain, because I know this is precisely parallel to the experience of some uninitiated soul stumbling on one of this very blog's long-winded meta-analyses of the role of narrative determinism in some popular work of online seralised fiction, and then they look up the work in question and see this:
