#Game Localization

Maybe you can answer this, but if you can't I'd get why. I'm playing the superb Sin & Punishment 64 and I am aware this game was Japan only for 8 years before Nintendo pushed a localization. But even the Japanese original, from what I could find, the game was fully voiced in English. I've noticed a lot of Japanese games do this. I don't mean to imply it's a problem but how come many JP titles, even niche stuff that doesn't make it here, have a lot of English voices/text?

You actually stumbled upon a specific example of a game that was meant to be localized and released in the US, but the localization fell through. Sin and Punishment 64 was developed by Treasure and released in 2000. Treasure already liked using English language for some games - they also recorded Radiant Silvergun (1998) in English.

Treasure had planned for a western localization too - the Nintendo E3 2001 press kit had a small section on N64 games that mentioned how Sin and Punishment was supposed to be shown (with an unknown future), but the localization and western launch unfortunately fell through - likely due in part to the decline of the N64 in popularity by then and Nintendo's heavy push of the Gamecube as the next big thing.

Most of S&P64's contemporary games were primarily in Japanese. You might find some occasional use of English words in games as special move barks (e.g. fighting games) but it's actually pretty rare to find full English voiceover in Japanese games that were never intended to go to western markets from the jump. Japan-only contemporaries like Mother 3, Policenauts, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, Sakura Wars 2, either did Japanese language audio or no voice acting at all. In that regard, Sin and Punishment is a rarity!

Spoiler warning: they just had a Nintendo Direct and i'm talking about a part of it

feel like i should be a lot more giddy about the new game announced today. like, when i was young RhythTen was basically the team mascot of my identity as a gamer. this would be considered the herald of a new era. i should be 3 ft. afloat from the ground rn the way i was after the reveal of Mario Wonder. but the video pulled me back to earth with the onetwo punch of a boring name and a distant release point. MAN, does the name Rhythm Heaven Groove fill me up with nothing. they just chose a music term to add on. Fever was also just a music word, but the difference is that it wasn't a one-syllable word and rhythm heaven fever was kinda fun to say. If they went with Rhythm Heaven Groovin' or Rhythm Heaven: In the Groove it would sound more complete. As it stands it sounds like one half of a twin game release. "Rhythm Heaven Groove and Rhythm Heaven Funk" or something.

I got flashbacks to the dissappointment i felt when i discovered WarioWare Gold ROBBED us americans of the moniker WarioWare Gorgeous like come ON man ...and that tempted to check what this new release was called abroad...

are you KIDDING ME. "Miracle Stars". that sounds WAY more interesting. no idea why it's called that, but i want to know. i now crave more information on this new RH. like i should have been in the first place. oh my heck.

A local game store here in South Carolina (Gamez Block) hosted our trans meetup group tonight, and it was really wonderful. We had a retro game night and played Wii Sports, Halo 3, Smash 64, House of the Dead, and Undercover Shot (yes, I made people play my NES game lol).

It was amazing being in a place that was not only okay with a group of trans people but actively welcomed us, and was excited to have us.

This is why I love small local businesses so much! They were willing to create a third space for us that didn’t revolve around drinking or spending money. They let us use their consoles, and their games entirely free of charge, and even stayed open late so we could keep having fun. They were having fun with us!

Please support your local game stores. Places like this are so valuable.

aftg au where andrew is a burnt out musician who's sick and tired of writing/playing shitty music bc his label says it sells better. he meets one deaf neil josten at some no-name pub on the east coast. he's a little mesmerized by the way neils hair catches in the bar lights and how his eyes track the woman playing bass on stage. andrew offers to buy him a drink and then he offers to blow him. it's a no but at first neil looked at him confused and andrews about to start wondering how someone who looks like that would be confused about an offer like that but then neil asks him to write his question down. he does. (there's something humbling about writing a proposition down). neil says no but they trade notes back and forth until the line of indie artists waiting their turn for the stage dwindled into nothing. the last thing andrew writes is his phone number. they talk, well, they text. neil doesn't know him, not the way magazine covers and top 40 radio hits know him. to neil, andrew minyard is just a guy that plays the drums and occasionally writes lyrics. one day, when he asks why neil loves watching him play his drums so much, why he goes to indie night at the pub when he can't hear the words they sing, neil tells him that he likes the thumping in the ground. it steadies him, calms him down as if his ear was pressed to someone's heart. he likes the way the artists lose themselves to their music in a way so obvious. its with neil peering into andrew's grand piano, his eyes watching the hammers pop, that he remembers why he started making music in the first place and for the first time in months he actually wants to compose something

The Undersiders streaming Minecraft after Taylor’s identity reveal instead of Tay turning herself in. They aren’t gonna go to war with Tagg, they’re just gonna become so likable that he gets kicked out of the Bay. So obviously the first thing they do is stream the biggest game at the time. Like how AOC streamed Among Us.

Alec has been playing since it was called Cave Game, so he spends a lot of time explaining how it works and all that. Brian keeps asking “okay but what do you do?” And Alec has to explain that it’s a goddamn sandbox game and you can do whatever the fuck you want. Brian ends up just collecting resources and giving them away to whoever needs them because he needs a goal and likes the feeling of being able to provide even in Minecraft.

Lisa has more fun than she expects, but really she gets more enjoyment out of the streaming aspect. Because for Lisa, having thousands of live viewers in her chat ripe for mass manipulation is like being a kid in a candy store.

Rachel wouldn’t play, but if she did, she’d lag out the world by breeding too many wolves. Alec would try to kill the wolves to reduce lag, and Rachel would then try to kill Alec in real life.

Taylor would accidentally invent the most efficient and game breaking farms just by dicking around and trying to optimize her base. Over a decade down the line Minecraft players will still be using farms and methods based off of her playthrough.

Aisha similarly would innovate new technologies in Minecraft that would become classic staples, but her contributions would all be traps and griefing methods designed to cause as much chaos and despair as possible.

The streams get super popular obviously and eventually Tagg is kicked out of Brockton for being an aggressive jackass. You could either go with the PRT leaving Brockton in entirety, or just replacing Tagg with a more passive director.
