"The happy face on straw bags means it's Goombay Summer time again in The Bahamas. Straw weavers in Rawson Square in the heart of Nassau make all kinds and shapes of bags, purses, hats and other straw goods bearing the multi-coloured trademark of the June-August folk festival."

~Galleryyuhself~ Seen on Facebook. A friend from the Bahamas sent this -:Remember couple weeks back I was calling on local breweries to create our own Bahamian-made hand sanitizer since we couldn't find it on the world market? Well, here you go! Kudos to John Watling's Distillery, Ltd. for taking up the challenge! We can do all things!

~Galleryyuhself~~ Every year we in the Caribbean wait with trepidation as the dice is rolled during the hurricane season. Which of our islands will face the brunt of these super storms? This year Hurricane Dorian swept down on the Bahamas. One of the most heart wrenching things heard was that no one could really prepare for a storm more intense than ever seen before. We in the rest of the Caribbean are now in the process of assisting our sister island in any way that we can. Storms take its toll emotionally and financially, and as we assist, we also have to consider how to help ourselves if they come our way the next time.

~Galleryyuhself~ PODCASTS on the Caribbean economy.
What people listen to makes a difference. That’s why to develop our region we need voices who KNOW and UNDERSTAND our region. Voices of Economists who specialize in Caribbean economies. Voices of small business owners in The Bahamas. Voices of energy experts for Jamaica and The Bahamas. Voices of storytellers from Trinidad and Tobago. Voices make a difference in development. https://bddy.me/37t0RTF

~Galleryyuhself~~In an age of fake news, even if half of this article is untrue it is still extremely troubling to read. This begs the question of what can governments in Caribbean do to change these statistics. It is known that many islands are doing what they can to ban plastic bags and containers. Yet, we still battle the unrelenting trash issues. In Trinidad and Tobago after every light rain one can see a sea of plastic bottles and food containers on the roads and in drains.
The destruction of the Bahamas by Hurricane Dorian showed all of us how easily the weather affected a country. Water courses are made worse by the influx of humanity’s waste.
Perhaps we in the Caribbean can use this disaster of Hurricane Dorian as a guide to encourage conversations and financial supports to rebuild the Bahamas and particularly, Abaco with better policies that can then be considered throughout the rest of the region. It may be very uncomfortable to say no to products that challenge our water tables and dumps, but we will have to take a stand on what we allow in our islands. In the last twenty years more and more Caribbean people have died of lifestyle diseases. What we consider progress and wealth, like the rest of the world, must now be re-evaluated. Success at what cost?
