A secret rock garden! What a wonderful find!
I'm not going to attempt series rock ID across a screen--for one thing I such at mineral identification, and for another handling the rocks in person and observing their taste, mass, texture, and the way the light plays over the surface is a big part of rock ID.
What I will say is this: some of these rocks are potentially quite valuable. Those large crystalline mineral samples in the first couple photos especially are of a quality that go for hundreds of dollars apiece. It almost doesn't matter what the minerals are--any crystals of that size and quality are worth quite a bit.
The fossils might be worth something as well, although where I'm from brachiopods are dime a dozen. Also, fossils are generally worth less without provenance, which you don't have for these rocks, unfortunately.
Even if you plan to keep all these rocks (as I would--how cool is it to find buried treasure in your backyard?) I would see if you can find a geologist or minerologist to come out and appraise your new rocks. Just so you have some idea what the ballpark is.
Who wants to help me ID some rocks?
So one of the cool things that got left at the new house is the former owner's rock and fossil collection, which they meticulously catalogued by which I mean they left them out under some junipers in the back yard. The power is out, so I'm spraying some of the dirt and leaves off with the hose, but if anyone has guesses I'd love to hear them.
1. The Big Fucker:
(10 in screwdriver for scale)
First clue that there was a secret collection, this was the only one really visible. Pale translucent blue-green cubic crystals and skinny, more opaque/white ones on top of a heavy dull white rock. Pretty, whatever she is.
2. Salt n Peppa
Pretty sure the black stuff is smoky quartz, but what are the white cubes and the red rock it's on?
3. Sparkly Bois:
Two of these- I think the little cubes are pyrite, but what's the dark, shiny/metallic stuff? Very heavy for their size.
4. Assorted Dead Things!
Fossil clams and a coral I think, but if anyone knows anything more specific I'd love to hear it. Pretty sure most of these things are from the Rockies/front range area but genuinely, I don't know where they got them.
5. IDK what she is, but her name is Helen:
Like a bunch of criss-crossing wafers. Not very heavy for her size.
6. Green Stuff:
What are the green crystals coming out of this rock? They're cool, whatever they are.
7. Miscellaneous Shinies:
Assorted small rocks I found while digging. Small dead clam, I think some of that is mica, and I'm really curious about the shiny stuff on the granite (?).
Part 1/2, gonna hose some more rocks while y'all speculate.
#geology#gallusrostromegalus#mineral identification#another reason to call in a geologist#is to get a really good ID#because i don't even have good guesses for some of these#one the previous owners must have been a miner#these look like mine samples to me#also i met a miner in kentucky once with the most fantastic rock garden#that third one might not be pyrite#there's a bunch of similar-looking minerals in the same group#arsenopyrite and such#and the larger crystals could be an unusual presentation of galena?#if it's really heavy#or illmenite#i have no idea about the green one because there are too many lightish green minerals#it could be beryl (same thing as emeralds)#or it could be one of the hundreds of other green minerals#the small clear pieces don't really look like mica#probably gypsum or calcite#that glittery stuff on the granite is either elemental gold or copper#that's part of what screams 'mine' about this whole pile#you don't really find elemental minerals in surface rocks that often

A single yellow dwarf, unremarkable, of about 1.0218 solar masses. And in its corona, dancing aurora-dragons, ribbons and feathers of nine-colored light, singing and reciting poetry to each other and hitching freezing rides on the asteroids and comets that swing close enough to the star to leap out onto.
One small, dense planet, frosted over with incandescent stormclouds that snow lead flakes onto the slopes of volcanoes whose calderas are choked with galena coral reefs, the bones of colonies of radiation-tolerant extremophilic microorganisms, and where sulfur-swamps coat the lazy tideless beaches of the planet's only ocean, stirred and tilled by people like lanky bundles of black ironstraw, who heap their storehouses high with xanthous dried fusegrass.
One larger, much cooler planet, the calcite gleam of its moon hidden from the surface much of the time by cloudcover. warm, shallow, mildly acidic seas of lavender mucous, tentative marshes of weeping fuschia ferns, translucent lapine blobs with probing antennae that could be eyes or ears or questing tongues, and in the middle of the deepest ocean, a massive gelatinous thing, a superorganism like a rose with its stem plunging down into the volcanic baths of an oceanic rift, a mind from whom all other minds on this planet came and to which they occasionally return, eager to share their stories.
One rocky planet, bitterly cold and with the merest wisps of atmosphere clinging to it. Lifeless, all its water burned off it by baleful solar glare, the vast horizon-spanning saltpan seafloors bone-bare under the violet sky, and its moon hanging above like a clenched fist of black basalt.
An asteroid belt, scattered diamond motes of ice and stone and clay and metals, with three dwarf planets in its embrace, and the largest of them bearing a banner of silver and midnight, a unicorn guarding some alien tree.
A planet one might almost mistake for Earth, for all its snake-necked tortoise-camels and gold-feathered tigermen, for all its gleaming pentagonal ziggurats of diamond and steel, its three space elevators anchored in the emerald forests that girdle the equator, the capital of an interplanetary empire founded at the mouth of an immense river lazily piling hundreds of tons of silt a year into delta marshes, its vast ports berthing wide, flat-bottomed barges hauling iron and salt and sand and cinnabar, barrels of fish and wine and oil and perfumes, tigerman janissaries and scholars and poets and wizards, all tallied and accounted for in the lightning thoughts of supercomputers domesticated by bureaucracy. spaceplanes like silver songbirds or leaping fish ferrying the nobility (who disdain regular shuttle flights from the tips of the space elevators as base transportation for commoners) from the surface of the planet to its moon above, or to any number of gleaming stations in high orbit.
A gas giant, pale as pearl streaked with delicate pink and green pastels, skirted by dozens of captured child-moons, many of them bearing the same unicorn banner, some of them mined for this or that rare earth element, cities buried under the shielding crust of a scant handful, and two of them habitiformed enough to support imperial hunting grounds - managed grasslands or forests full of imported game - and hunting lodges of squat domes and towering spires, mirrored labyrinthine greenhouse-gardens and treasure-vaults of platinum jewelry set with nebula-gems snatched from their condensation-nests in the gas giant's depths.
Another gas giant, the blues and purples of a ripe plum blushing from clouds of midnight-black marbled with gold, icy rings slicing through swirling lunar orbits, merchants and mercenaries and privateers gliding from port to port in their sapphire-hulled ships, out where the empire scrabbles to find purchase. hollowed-out asteroids house cylindrical farms or monasteries of fatalistic leonine faiths or the huddled bodies of wound-down murine clockwork eunuchs, commissioned to advise and amuse some tiger-empress whose phoenix standard had long since faded into obscurity by the time the founder of the unicorn-banner dynasty first rallied soldiers to his cause.
An Earth-sized ball of grey-green ice, glassy smooth surfaces broken up by cryovolcanoes pumping volatiles up from a sooty core to rain down again in miserable pattering drizzles of methane through ammonia blizzards.
An ice giant, the immense azure sphere its inward neighbor might have been were it not for the vagaries of fate as involved in early star system formation, accompanied by seventeen bitterly cold moons whose tides have woven something enormous and ponderous of thought out of the inner sea of supercritical fluids.
a dozen or more dwarf planets of packed stone and ice, swinging through the outer black clouds on vastly elliptical orbits, witnesses to tumbling nickel-iron visitors and alien probes relaying streams of blurry photography and other observations back to some unknown homeworld as they fall endlessly through interstellar space.

Prompt #23: On Cloud Nine
“Wanna see somethin’ cool?” Her fool’s gold gaze flicked up towards him. He was sitting on the edge of her balcony. She didn’t ask how he got there. “…Sure. Why not?”
The plaza outside the residential unit was empty, clear, and blessedly free of any of the sentries on patrol. Pyrite was kicked back on a bench with a drink from the Vue in her hand, lazily watching him with a raised brow and a constant question resting on her lips. It went unsaid, of course, as he stood a little ways before her and stared up towards the top of the building. Inspecting, waiting. He clicked his tongue. “Alright. Surveillance gone- You just hang out down here, yeah?” He gave her a thumbs-up and an award winning smile that hadn’t quite gained all the years that would come. “I promise it won’t take long.” “Sure, Gal, I’ll wait. Long as you don’t expect me to follow you up there. Or you don’t come down with somethin’ that’s gonna get the Queen asking us where our minds went…” All she got back was a wink. She sighed.
He was already scrambling up the side of the building before she could say anything else. He wasn’t normally much of a law-breaker. No reason to be in his life. But there was one law he took great glee in disrespecting at every opportunity- As he flung himself from the bottom of a wall to its top ledge with nothing but his fingertips and toes he gave a loving curse to gravity trying to keep him on the ground. A surveillance drone’s engines whined underneath him as he slipped into a nook that barely fit him. Just enough to hide from its gaze as it swung around the building; then upon finding nothing worth looking at, it chirped and swerved to fly off towards the overpass that lay high above them. He tried not to laugh. Tried not to wave at it as it went. Another floor up, another terrace, now he was really getting into the weeds. Portions that were never really meant for some random people to be climbing on. Or standing on. Or just being near. He was fairly certain most of the top side of the building was maintained by drones and sentries judging by how little of it seemed to be made accessible from the inside. Fine with him- In fact. That’s exactly why he was here. It was a pretty important part of Solution 9- and Everkeep as a whole, really- that each level was independently capable of maintaining its atmospheric conditions. Everything from air quality to humidity, temperature to air movement. And most of it was controlled by behemoth structures of electrope that were the near-constant subject of surveillance, maintenance, and updates. While he found these gargantuan machines to be truly magnificent wonders of technology, he had a more grounded focus. A smaller scale idea in mind. The selfsame machines had smaller, localized, and specialized variants spread out throughout Solution 9. Many of which adorned the top and sides of buildings and structures- Especially the residential buildings. While no access was available, really, from the insides there was no reason to restrict them from the outside. Nobody sane was gonna climb the damn thing to get to them. And even if they did, what were they gonna do? Not like they had much in the way of controls, right?
As Galena slipped his flat-knife between the body of the machine and the maintenance panel he couldn’t help the laugh that bubbled out of him. He was, frankly, insane enough to do it. Especially for something like this.
“Hey, Pyre,” Came the crackle of his voice over her earpiece. She blinked out of the daze she’d fallen into before cocking her head and looking up. She couldn’t see him. “Yeah? You in trouble… wherever you’re at?” “Nope, just wanted to ask you a question.” She sat there for a moment, her jaw set. “As long as it ain’t the one I’m thinkin’ of.” He returned the momentary silence. “Remember when I was readin’ off those old sensor reports to ya?”
She clicked her tongue as her brow furrowed. She set down the drink she’d been ignoring and took in a breath as she tried to recall- That was years ago now, wasn’t it? They’d been assigned together. She was his guard, he was the scavenger. Get into an old monitoring station and take everything- even the wiring in the walls. Honestly it hadn’t been much of a memorable day. The rain was heavy but the lightning was merciful. “…Yeah…? You found some old storage or whatever and got really excited about… weather reports? I remember it was somethin’ about the rain.” The confident sound of his laugh came crackling through. “Yeah, the rain. Really old rain and weather reports that I don’t think anybody else would care for. But do you remember the specifics of why I was so happy to find ‘em?”
He didn’t need to see her face to know what expression she made. She didn’t need to see him to know he was grinning ear to ear.
A drop of water hit her on the head. She shielded her eyes as she looked up- Another, then another. The smell of rain filled the plaza, the taste of it filling the artificial lawn, the sight of it spilling across the walkways, the feeling of a light summer shower that hadn’t graced much else in so many a year, the scent of petrichor filling her head like a drug. But the sunlight of Everkeep’s sky-high life still glinted down. Galena’s voice crackled again as she stood in it, dumbfounded by him as she watched him descend down the side of the building giddy like a kid on his birthday. He was soaked. He was laughing. He was laughing the whole way down. “Sunshowers, Rite!”
#ffxivwrite2024#/Companions/GnPy#much earlier in galena and pyrite's timeline#before they Got Hitched probably#true love is hijacking the local atmospheric controls for romantic purposes

*shows up an hour late with starbucks only to realize we never had an appointment* This is awkward. To make it less awkward, answer some questions for me. What song makes your body go 'oh, we should flail about to this!', what is a weird fact more people should know, and what is the ideal beverage to sip upon when it's pleasantly warm (without being too hot) outside?
aww Rifle it's always good to hear from you <3
I saw I SAW THE TV GLOW this past weekend and it Unhinged Me and i have been mainlining its soundtrack like nobody's business since. it is a great soundtrack that really Gets the dual horror and euphoria of being a teenager. a standout is "Starburned and Unkissed" by Caroline Polachek that I am obsesssedddd with
the middle name of the great American science-fiction writer known as Philip K. Dick is Kindred. Philip Kindred Dick. (his mother's maiden name was Kindred). but it is a very prescient name once you know he had a twin sister who died at six weeks old; and once you know that, you'll never stop seeing her and the idea of the "phantom twin" in his writing
a second weird fact that suggests EVERYThING IS CONNECTED: the man who invented the x-acto knife is the father of Louise Glück, the wonderful American poet.
and similarly, but possibly more relevant to your interests: here in Ireland, the mines in Glengowla were active in the latter half of the nineteenth century where they dug up gold, quartz, marble, and galena. the galena was shipped to neighboring Britain where it was made into bullets and then exported to the United States, which was experiencing a civil war at the time.
at the same time, the irishmen (because it was men) working in the mine would order supplies to be shipped to them from America because it was somehow *cheaper* to do so than to either make or buy tools in Ireland. there are wood ladders still in the mine today (can't be brought out or they'll fall apart in the non-mine air) that were once American trees. it's! all! connected!
ideal beverage to sip when it's pleasantly warm... a cup of black tea with milk that has cooled a bit so you can drink it without scalding your tongue.
this has been fun Rifle and really funny and pretty impeccable timing because I was legit thinking about messaging you to get your opinion on: a Saw Gerrara in a modern real-life world who is not a soldier: what does he do for a living???

What rock would you want to eat if you could? I would want to eat Pyrite and hoped it tasted like raw gold foil chocolate coins
It's hard to say, they all look so tasty! As many said already, a lot of rocks and minerals look like candy so honestly I'd like to eat them all!
If I have to say specifics I'd say Coffinite bc it looks like a crunchy chocolate cookie. Chalcanthite also just looks like some very silly candy. Cinnabar is just hard candy to me, same to Galena. Orpiment bc yellow and also again, looks like candy. Malachite is just so pretty I wanna put it in my mouth!
#I don't think I need to say don't eat these yeah?#Here's why:#Coffinite: Radiation poisoning (Uranium Ore)#Chalcanthite and Malachite: Copper Poisoning#Cinnabar: Mercury Poisoning#Galena: Lead Poisoning#Orpiment: Arsenic Poisoning#geology#rocks#cool rocks#minerals#crystals

HERE IT IS:
A Court of Gold and Shadows
The Female that was born into the flames, and the Male that was scarred by them.
The Unexpected Series
“If you need to fuck someone, go to a pleasure hall and pay for it, but stay away from her.”
What if… Azriel actually takes Rhys at his word? And does exactly what his High Lord ordered? With unexpected consequences.
Indelible
Azriel knew pain. So did Galena.
A Pocketful of Stars
The Story of how Azriel ends up with a mate and a kid in the span of 24 hours.
The Starlight Princess
There is a Pool of Starlight in the Spring Court. A piece of the Night Court that has no business being in the land of Eternal Spring. So how did it come to be?
Or: How the Spymaster of the Night Court starts hearing a voice, realises that no, he is not insane after all, frees a princess, kills a High Lord…and finds his mate all at the same time.
The Prophecy
Eira Archeron is a a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma..and Azriel would give everything to figure her out.
Recipe for Love
At first, Azriel just really wants a slice of Peach Cobbler. Later, he thinks that the bakery owner is quite pretty too.
The Ties that Bind
Shadowsingers were made, not born. Made out of trauma and loneliness and desperation.
So when Cilla and Azriel meet and their shadows entwine, they both meet the only other person that could understand these particular childhood scars.
The last thing Azriel had ever expected from his mate, however, was for her to have a surprising connection to his brother.
The Witching Hour
5 Times members of the Inner Circle get absolutely terrified by Azriel's...whatever she is, and 1 (of many) times Azriel thinks that his witch was the best thing that ever happened to him
Brighten Up the Sky
A Mating Bond between her younger sister and the Night Court’s shadowsinger was the last thing Feyre had expected to spring upbut then, maybe it did make sense.
Stars all aligned
If there was one thing that both Azriel and Zahra Archeron had in common, it was that they were both very good at blending into the background.
They just never thought that their family were going to be the ones who never saw them at all.
It's a Love Story
Azriel's shadows find their master a wife.
Azriel would just really like his heart not to get broken again.
And Sky...well, she's just really surprised that that far too handsome male is interested in her at all.
Holy Ground
Nobody knew that Azriel found his mate. Until she nearly died. This is the aftermath.
Dust of your Highest Hopes
Eavesdroppers never hear anything good about themselves, goes the idiom.
When Solana hears an admission from the High Lord of Day, she’s ill-prepared for it. She doesn’t believe in fairytales any longer, but maybe there was a happily ever after for Solana and Helion somewhere.
Don't wait for the Sky to Clear
The Fourth Archeron sister makes herself a life in the Dawn Court.
Tear the World Apart
Eris’ mate decides to get rid of her father-in-law. Also known as: If Eris Vanserra married a very bloodthirsty Margaery Tyrell.
frozen deep blue but you painted me golden
Kora feels self conscious. Thankfully, her mate knows how to fix that.

I wasn't entirely sure what message to put, so I googled "inspirational phrases" and looked through a list. I thought this one fit the medium (a small notecard) very well and would be a good reminder to anyone who stumbled upon this on the Library wall while studying for a final. Sometimes it feels like you'll never finish studying or complete that paper, but nothin' is impossible!
Attendance prompt:
"The kind of kohl used depended on wealth and social status. The poor might use mixtures of soot and animal fats, but, as ever, the wealthy demanded something rather more special. Theirs would predominantly be made of galena, the dark metallic mineral form of lead sulfide. This would be crushed and mixed with powdered pearls, gold, coral, or emeralds to give sheen and subtle color. Frankincense, fennel, or saffron might then be added for their scent." (263)
I found it interesting that even thousands of years ago people felt the need to use forms of "fashion" to divide the wealthy from the poor. Examples of clothing, accessories, etc. indicative of wealthy people vs those indicative of lower-class people prevail in our society -- even if those indications are not accurate and just surface-level stereotypes.

The Beauty of Raw Crystals from Peru
Raw crystals have fascinated people for centuries, with their natural formations capturing the imagination of collectors, healers, and geologists alike. Among the most stunning and sought-after raw crystals are those found in Peru, a region known for its mineral wealth and unique crystal combinations. The untouched, unpolished look of these stones preserves their natural beauty, offering a direct connection to the Earth’s forces that formed them over millions of years. Crystals like pyrite, quartz, and galena are particularly famous in their raw form, not only for their individual appeal but also for how they grow together in unique formations. The raw mineral specimens from Peru stand out as some of the finest examples in the world, captivating both casual admirers and serious crystal enthusiasts.
Peruvian Pyrite
One of the most recognizable crystals from Peru is pyrite, commonly known as “fool’s gold” due to its metallic luster and golden color. Pyrite crystals are often found in stunning cubic shapes, making them a favorite among collectors. In Peru, pyrite is frequently found growing alongside other minerals, creating striking visual combinations that add to its allure. The natural raw appearance of pyrite, with its sharp edges and reflective surfaces, is what makes it so appealing to those who love the unrefined beauty of minerals. It is also believed to have protective and grounding properties, which adds to its popularity in spiritual and healing communities.
What sets Peruvian pyrite apart from other sources is its large, well-formed crystals that often appear in perfect geometric shapes. These raw specimens are commonly left unpolished to maintain their natural aesthetic. The contrast between pyrite’s metallic luster and the rough matrix it often grows on highlights the uniqueness of each piece. Collectors prize these formations not only for their beauty but also for their rarity and origin, as Peru continues to produce some of the finest pyrite specimens available.
Quartz Crystals in Peru
Quartz is another prominent mineral found in Peru, known for its clarity and the way it forms in large, impressive clusters. Quartz crystals, especially clear quartz, are often referred to as “master healers” in crystal healing practices, making them highly valued not just for their appearance but for their energetic properties. In their raw form, quartz crystals from Peru can be quite breathtaking, especially when found in combination with other minerals like pyrite or galena.
One of the most striking features of raw quartz is how it naturally forms points and clusters, with the points often perfectly transparent or slightly clouded, adding depth to the crystal. These clusters can be quite large, making them impressive centerpieces in any collection. Peru is known for producing quartz in a variety of forms, including smoky quartz and even amethyst in some regions, though clear quartz remains the most common. The natural formation of quartz, without any polishing or cutting, speaks to its raw power and connection to the Earth’s geological processes.
Galena Crystals and Their Distinctive Shine
Galena is another mineral frequently found in Peru, known for its metallic silver color and high density. In its raw form, galena often occurs in beautifully defined cubic shapes, much like pyrite, and the two minerals are often found together. The metallic sheen of galena gives it a unique appearance that contrasts well with the rougher textures of other minerals it may grow alongside.
While galena is most commonly recognized for its industrial use as a lead ore, in the world of crystal collectors, it holds a special place for its aesthetic appeal. Its raw, unpolished form is striking, especially when paired with other minerals such as quartz or sphalerite. In Peru, galena is often mined in combination with these other minerals, creating stunning specimens that showcase the natural artistry of mineral growth. The way galena’s reflective surface catches the light, even in its raw state, is a large part of its appeal to collectors and enthusiasts.
The Interplay of Minerals Growing Together
One of the most exciting aspects of raw crystals from Peru is the way multiple minerals grow together, forming unique and complex specimens. Pyrite and quartz are often found in combination, with golden pyrite cubes contrasting against the clear or smoky points of quartz crystals. These natural formations highlight the way minerals interact with each other during their growth, often resulting in breathtaking displays of color, texture, and shape.
In addition to pyrite and quartz, other minerals like galena, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite frequently form together in the same deposits. Each of these minerals brings its own unique characteristics to the mix, creating specimens that are not only beautiful but also scientifically fascinating. These multi-mineral specimens are highly prized by collectors for their rarity and the intricate way the different crystals have formed together over time.
In particular, sphalerite and galena are often found growing together, with the rich, dark hues of sphalerite complementing the metallic shine of galena. When combined with pyrite, the contrast between the gold, silver, and dark tones makes for an eye-catching display that feels as if nature itself has arranged the perfect work of art. These raw crystal formations are often left untouched, with collectors valuing the natural appearance of the minerals as they were found in the Earth.
Why Some Crystals are Best Left Raw
While many crystals are polished to bring out their luster and clarity, there is something uniquely special about leaving certain crystals in their raw, unpolished state. Crystals like pyrite and galena often lose some of their natural charm when polished, as their cubic structures and metallic luster are best appreciated in their unrefined form. Quartz, too, is often more impressive in its natural clusters, where the raw points and intricate formations showcase the power of nature at work.
Raw crystals offer a more authentic connection to the Earth, allowing people to experience the beauty of these minerals exactly as they were found. For collectors, raw crystals represent the untamed forces of nature that created them, and many believe that leaving them in their natural state helps to preserve their energetic properties. When crystals are left unpolished, it’s easier to appreciate their geological history and the natural processes that shaped them over millions of years.
