Every time Hatou promised herself it would be the last time. At least in these last few iterations.
There’d once been a time when she’d hated Alice. One of the first times she’d truly gotten close to her, she couldn’t resist twisting the knife and betrayed her.
She still did, sometimes. And sometimes that was because it felt like she was betraying Yukari. Hatou was a chameleon. She would be whoever she thought to be to save Yukari.
She looked down, brushing a tear from Alice’s eye.
Even now, when Alice had had another nightmare, she’d affirmed her love physically.
This links to a wheel with nearly a hundred fic tropes for plots, settings, and more. Spin it twice.
This could also work with art inspiration, but the buttons only allow for so many characters on them. And please do ramble in the tags! I'm going to have no idea what most of you are talking about, and it's going to be great.

Welcome to Revenge of the Underrated!
Some of you asked me to put a "haven't watched both" to be more fair to the more unknown movies, but I've seen other tournaments doing this and I think it limits too much who can participate in the polls. So what I decided to do is a double elimination!
What does that mean? That means a movie has to lose twice to be eliminated. In other words, there will be a sorts of losers bracket that'll be part of main bracket. I'm undecided on whether to do this for only one round or the whole bracket, as it would make the tournament very long. Do let me know if you have any opinion about it.
Anyway, Revenge of the Underrated, Round 1:

KNOCKOUTS: Qualia the Purple (2011 - 13)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Qualia the Purple is a three volume scifi series by Shirou Tsunashima based on light novels by Hisamitsu Ueo about a girl whose friend sees humans as robots.
Through the uncanny purple eyes of Yukari, all people appear to her as robots. Her talent is both a blessing and a curse. She is able to assist the police in sizing up threats, since her “skill” allows her to evaluate humans’ quirks and physical capabilities like cataloging the parts of a machine–yet her strange sight has cost her the friendship of her peers. She does have one friend in her corner: Hatou “Gaku” Manabu, a girl at school who cares deeply for Yukari. When Yukari is recruited into a secret organization, the real trouble begins. Gaku is thrust into a realm of mystery, quantum experimentation, and alternate universes, with only her wits–and her love for Yukari–to guide her along the way. - AniList
ENG published by Seven Seas; AFAIK no convenient site to read the JP.
CWs under the cut. General severity rating: mod to major.
suggestive scenes <- details are greyed out but there's an upskirt shot at one point; occasional mildly suggestive posing; some mild non-sexual nudity and flashes of non-explicit sex; occasional sexual reference.
violence <- i did try to list out every distinct type of violence but it got too big. tl;dr, never especially graphic or gory, but violence is very frequent. details are typically blacked out. includes dismemberment, decapitation, strangulation, and gun violence.
body horror <- primarily in relation to the above. beyond that, there's mainly just the conceptual body horror of an injured human getting fixed like a robot (which is a major plot point and also really cool).
major character death <- not elaborating too hard on this one <3 you'll know when you get there. there's a big tonal shift after this happens (again. you'll know when you get there).
minor character death <- a plane is blown up and multiple minor characters die, including children. technically temporary, and the incident itself isn't dwelled on.
inappropriate age gap <- ch12, a conversation is had with an alternate hatou who has fallen in love with alice, noted to be 13 at the time where hatou is 16. called out as creepy by our hatou within that conversation. ch15, we see part of another world where hatou pursued a relationship with alice, including briefly showing them nude in bed and kissing. i'd say it's framed mostly negatively; the relationship is described in narration as brainwashing.
domestic abuse? <- ch15, flash forward of a relationship implies some degree of emotional abuse.
child abuse <- inflicted by a mother. part of a character's backstory, physical briefly shown in ch14. ch15, a different mother is also shown physically abusing her child, justifying it against the other mother by saying its out of love. additional abusive practices in relation to human experimentation mentioned below.
bullying <- there's a bullying plot in early chapters which is largely just teasing and gets resolved quickly, but ch11 briefly shows a bullying situation that reaches into abusive territory. additional, less notable mentions of bullying dotted about after this point.
suicide <- shown in ch15 via walking into traffic.
kidnapping <- there's a kidnapping in ch6 & ch13, both are brief but grievous bodily harm is inflicted in both instances.
human experimentation <- of the unethical variety. conducted on children, and resulted in death on at least one occasion. the facility in question was abusive in additional ways, such as using solitary confinement, threats, and pain as punishment for non-compliance.
internalised homophobia <- hatou thinks of being attracted to other girls as deviancy.
bittersweet ending <- less bleak than the whole latter half of the manga, though.

Read quality the purple last night since you were talking about it and oh my god what a phenomenal story!! For one thing the art and the character design is so lovely, the artist clearly has some roots in gag manga and the early strips with Alice Tenjou Gaku and Marii are simply just fun — but oh my god the way the story spins out from there?? I’m reminded a lot of Madoka Magica, but it’s like if Homura became the universe instead of Madoka… genuinely one of my new favorite yuri works thank you so much for bringing it up
YAYAYY qualia the purple sweep forever!!! we've heard the madoka comparisons before but actually this predates madoka magica fun fact

l'aventure de canmom à annecy - épisode DEUX - mardi 1: Hyakuemu
today started with something pretty cool - I went to a 'making of' session for the upcoming anime film ひゃくえむ (Hyakuemu, lit. 100m) by the team behind On-gaku: My Sound.
Tumblr media
The panel consisted of director Kenji Iwaisawa, char designer/sakkan Keisuke Kojima, art director and bg artist Keikankun Yamaguchi and producer Akane Taketsugu. They answered questions in Japanese, which was then interpreted into French, and if you had the phone app, interpreted again from French into English simultaneously, which meant it was a bit of a game of telephone but it worked surprisingly well.
The film is using a pretty unusual rotoscope process: much like The Case of Hana and Alice, it's filmed and edited in live action, which is then used as a basis for animation at a reduced framerate.
The character designs are fairly stylised compared to the live action, and the animation process seems to follow a fairly traditional process of roughs - sakkan corrections - keys - inbetweens, with the twist that it's all done digitally inside clip studio.
They made a fairly detailed comparison to On-gaku - which I evidently need to see asap, these guys are legit. By comparison they described this as a larger team, and the film as a much more realist style, and more of a commercial than a personal project. Still it's definitely a small team, with only one person apparently responsible for both live action and comp.
Art director Yamaguchi is evidently very talented, but she spoke about feeling inexperienced at the style demanded by the film (though she was the sole colourist for years on On-gaku), and having to experiment a lot. All the film's bgs are painted physically in watercolour for the warmth this brings, based on detailed tracings of photos. She showed one very complex bg animation sequence with 29 drawings, and Iwaisawa apologised for making her do it. They talked about taking inspiration from the backgrounds in Akira.
Kojima showed various settei, and talked about how he'd adjust performances during animation.
Iwaisawa described how they cast actors that resembled the manga characters and dressed them in rough costumes for animation reference, and also directing them to act in a more exaggerated, theatrical style. He also mentioned his excitement at certain sequences, describing the film's ending as like a rock festival. He described his main reason for using rotoscope as the energy he'd be able to get by editing the live action footage prior to animation, as well as his prior experience using rotoscope for short films.
They didn't show a ton of footage but apparently the film is about 75% done, with the live action fully shot. At the end they asked if anyone was interested in working on the film and got a flood of volunteers. All in all it seems like the perfect case of how to do a rotoscope film, and I'm really excited to see it next year - maybe it will hit the same as Slam Dunk.

responding to some tags reblogged from me, but I don't think anyone who has problems with elements of Qualia the Purple and thinks it's not for them is "puritanical", it could just not be for them. As a (certain kinds of) toxic yuri appreciator, I do still know toxic weird romance isn't for everyone, some people have a low tolerance for that kind of thing and that's fine.
TBH, I personally didn't like the age gap stuff between Alice and Gaku even though when you put it on the list of stuff Gaku did wrong (and did wrong specifically to poor Alice lol) it's below a lot of worse crimes--just because I couldn't get behind it as much as the stuff being a fucked up possessive weirdo who murders across the timeline. One was an element I could relate to (I like to think I'm not possessive irl but we all have possessive thoughts and who doesn't relate to time loop murder spree lmao) --and one I can't really grok with or relate to, and it's everywhere in animanga to the extent it's exhausting, as is the baggage attached.
(I also think it muddled the scene of Gaku admitting she likes girls to add that element. Her other self being like 'girl she's too young for you???': understandable, correct average reaction to have irl. Her other self's internalized homophobia: not that. But it felt like both were being equated even if that wasn't the intent).
So yeah, it not being for you isn't a puritan thing (and I'm so uninterested in that culture war so please don't @ me) Some elements were not for me too, I could just overlook them because the rest of the story was interesting. Saying other people are terrible for liking qualia the purple or whatever would be bad, obvs, but I completely understand if someone just doesn't like it or something with elements like it. It's got a high barrier to entry and I would absolutely mention that stuff if I was reccing to someone I didn't know.

do you have any jdrama recs? i really wanna start watching them! thank u sm! 💓
hi, anon! I do have some jdrama recommendations but since you didn't specify your preferred genre, I'd take it that you're fine with any. (٥⁀▽⁀ ) You can click the links to check the summary.
Bitter Blood (Partners by Blood) - the first jdrama I finished watching, the comedy in this series is great and aside from the genre mentioned, there are other elements of the series that made it worth watching. Genre: Action, Comedy, Mystery Main Cast: Satou Takeru, Watabe Atsuro
Kagi no Kakatta Heya - this got my interest because of the main cast but it definitely became one of my favorites that I still rewatch even to this day Genre: Thriller, Mystery, Drama Main Cast: Ohno Satoshi, Toda Erika, Sato Koichi
Good Doctor - this one originated from Kdrama of the same title, I watched the Korean and US versions so I can definitely say that this version has a different flavor to offer Genre: Life, Drama, Medical Main Cast: Yamazaki Kento, Ueno Juri, Fujiki Naohito
Mystery to Iunakare - I posted this one before and I even read the manga, the mysteries are not that mind-blowing but the main character is very interesting. this will have a movie that will feature one of the arcs in the manga and I am also looking forward to it. ^^ Genre: Mystery, Psychological, Life, Drama Main Cast: Suda Masaki
Shikaku Tantei Higurashi Tabito - the MC is also interesting, he had an accident in the past that lead to losing all his senses except his sense of sight and he is using his ability as a private detective. this has 2 seasons by the way so if ever you're going to watch this and enjoyed watching the first season, you might as well check season 2 Genre: Mystery, Drama, Supernatural Main Cast: Matsuzaka Tori, Tabe Mikako, Hamada Gaku, Sumida Moeno
Nobunaga Concerto - this one's based on manga, I never read the manga or watched the anime so maybe this could be another reason why I appreciated the live-action version but if you haven't read or watched the animanga, you can give this a try too Genre: Action, Military, Historical, Comedy Main Cast: Oguri Shun, Shibasaki Ko
3 Nen A Gumi: Ima kara Mina-san wa, Hitojichi Desu - you can watch this on Netflix, this is also a very good series Genre: Action, Thriller, Mystery, Psychological Main Cast: Suda Masaki, Nagano Mei
99.9: Keiji Senmon Bengoshi - MC is also weird so it got me, I have a thing for characters that are too weird but too good in what they do. this has season 2 as well ^^ Genre: Mystery, Comedy, Law Main Cast: Matsumoto Jun, Kagawa Teruyuki, Eikura Nana
Radiation House - this is also based on manga, I've read only a few chapters but I think the series was also well-made, there's romance but not to the point that it would go off the actual plot Genre: Mystery, Drama, Medical Main Cast: Kubota Masataka, Honda Tsubasa, Hirose Alice
Bokura wa Kiseki de Dekite Iru - now this one could be a total hit or a total miss for you, some find it boring but I really loved this series, if you are fine with watching a pure slice of life drama, you might also like this one, the MC is also eccentric which also became one of the main element of the story Genre: Life, Drama Main Cast: Kubota Masataka, Honda Tsubasa, Hirose Alice
So these are just some of the series I can recommend. If you're planning to check some of these and liked them too, feel free to DM me so we can talk about it more. It's not often that I encounter someone interested in jdrama. ^^ But damn, just reminiscing about these series makes me want to watch them again.

Happy 5th Anniversary to Kuzuha and the Second Wave of Nijisanji debut. Aside from Kenmochi the rest of them don’t get as much support so here’s the full list of Gen 2 Debuts:
Tumblr media
-Suzuka Utako -Ushimi Ichigo -Yuuhi Riri -Ienaga Mugi -Mononobe Alice -Fumino Tamaki -Fushimi Gaku -Gilzaren III -Kenmochi Toya -Morinaka Kazaki
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also remember that Kuzuha technically debuted before he joined Nijisanji, so congrats to him as well! If you want more livers to get into specifically for Gen 2 I recommend watching either TogaBito (Kenmochi/Gaku), Trigger (Kenmochi/Gaku/Yuuhi), or Happy Trigger (Kenmochi/Gaku/Yuuhi/Mugi), since they are the easiest to get into due to the amount of clips. My personal rec would be Morinaka Kazaki but start anywhere!

can you give some manga/anime recs??
hello, sorry to answer a bit late. I don't know about your tastes (I basically mostly read and watch shojo/josei and sometimes shonen/seinen), but here are some recs.
Manga recs:
Akane Banashi. it's such a nice story, with great characters too!!! It feels like a spokon but with a traditional art instead of sports!!! And it's all due to the main character's very competitive personality. It's truly one of my favourite series rn.
Recently i have started Don't call it mystery and i'm enjoying it so far (i still have to start the third volume tho). It's about a young guy solving peculiar mysteries.
House of five leaves. A very compelling historical manga about a group of criminals.
The apothecary diaries. I've been reading both the manga and the light novels and i'm enjoying it so much that i'm not even talking about it in here because i want to finish it without spoilers lmao.
Anime recs:
Bocchi the rock. It was one of my favourite anime last year (and i'm gonna start reading the manga soon), it's very funny and hella relatable. Also it literally rocks.
The Fire Hunter. It's a fantasy anime (i think it's an original one?), i watched it last year but i heard they're already planning a second season. it has a very fascinating setting and the main characters' stories are also very interesting.
Those snow white notes. I followed this anime a few years ago and i am not joking when i say it was like entering another dimension for 25 minutes per week. Also banger music!!! (kinda sad that there's nowhere to read the manga nor a second season coming).
Run with the wind. It's one of my favourite series, it's a spokon, truly just pick it up and you won't regret it.
Raven of the inner palace. It's a shojo historical/fantasy series and i found it great!!!!
If you like "typical" (shojo-like) fantasy anime, I have also enjoyed I'm the villainess, so i'm taming the final boss and I'm in love with the villainess.
House of five leaves. This is a historical anime, I have already recommended the manga but i'd check out both because they have different final arcs and different endings (both enjoyable).
The Aqualope on white sand. It's a shojo (but to me, it was gay).
The Apothecary diaries. Still airing, amazing adaptation (look at what can they do when they give shojo series the attention they deserve!!).
Also I'm gonna leave some unsolicited anime movies recs bc I loved this films:
Inu Oh. Idk if there's any streaming available so far but i watched it a few months ago and it's such a banger trust me this one can only be described with "slay".
The case of hana and alice. It's a very funny slice of life movie, 100% recommended.
On Gaku: our sound. It's another slice of life movie that captures perfectly the feeling of being promising yet cringe in your teens.
Okay I am done now. Again, I don't know if these recs suit your tastes but I hope you'll enjoy them!
