I don’t listen to Latin jazz per se, though rhythmic innovation is at the heart of the history of jazz and more often than not drummers make the gig. This one opened with trumpter RACHEL THERRIEN adding her claves to Carlos Maldano’s congas and Juan Carlos Polo behind the kit. She even handed the claves to pianist Gabriel Chakarji as he waded in with her horn line over that bed of sound. With so much support Polo could actually play lighter, but maybe what makes this Latin is that rhythmic density.

Coltrane’s Moment’s Notice late in the set served as a reference point. Therrien and Chakarji have legitimate jazz chops—and Paul Reyes gave every indication of being solid under the roar—but those layers more than the melody lines or the harmonies were the point. But again maybe it’s always about the drums. They provided an aural kaleidoscope to be sure. But I think what I got out of this show was ideas to think about rhythm in my more usual contexts. And that may be enough Latin jazz for a while.
