Prompt: “The diamond in your engagement ring is fake”

Day 22! Semi cheating because I wrote this yesterday but I knew I wouldn’t have time tonight. Got my first class of the semester!

Gabby was not made for this. She was a mechanic, not someone used to parties socializing with the upper class, having to fake laugh as leering men make poor jokes and women judge and are judged based on a number of things—only half of which were under their control. Granted, she now more or less worked for a secret spy organization, but still. This was a little out of her area of expertise. 

But Illya needed a partner in this, someone to accompany him to a fancy party where dangerous sorts swam freely, hidden under crisp fabrics and layers of perfume. 

“The diamond on your engagement ring is fake.” A voice says to her left and Gabby whips around to find a man bending down slightly towards her so his comment wasn’t overheard, an amused smile in his eyes and on his face. Gabby knows little about clothes but even she could tell he was dressed impeccably; he was clearly atome here, and that made him dangerous. 

“Excuse me?” Gabby plastered on her sweetest of smiles. She got roped into this because Illya barely spoke when in such crowds, meaning she had to save them both from overly ‘friendly’ sorts. 

“It’s a fake.” The man smiled again, “as is your Dolce and Gabbana.” He inclined his head to her outfit, “well done, certainly, but not perfect.”

God she wants to slap that stupidly perfect face, “I think I’ve had enough of this abuse, excuse me.” 

“I’m not here to expose whatever it is you’re trying to do,” his voice is light and playful but something in it makes her stop and frantically wish that Illya would hurry up with whatever he was doing and come find her, “I think we could help each other. You see, the host isn’t the nicest gent, although I’m sure you and your Russian friend already know a lot about that.”

Gabby whips back around and stares at this man who obviously knows to much, mouth a thin line. He looks pleased, one eyebrow raised.

“Oh is that all I had to do to get your attention, mention your ‘fiancé’? My name is Napoleon Solo.” He holds out a hand and Gabby runs through the list of names she’s studied for this evening—Solo, wasn’t he a thief on the CIA’s leash? She put her hand in his and squeezed perhaps a tad to tight, “and I think this could be the beginning of a beautiful partnership, Ms. Gabriella Teller.”

I may or may not have been watching ‘Ready or Not’ too much recently, but what I wouldn’t give for a ‘Ready or Not’ fusion with ‘The Man From U.N.C.L.E’

I’m a big fan of Rule!63, so always-a-girl!Napoleon as The Bride who survives her wedding night with her husband’s family hunting her for sport and who somehow inherits the protection of Mr. Le Bail.

It’s what initially puts her on U.N.C.L.E’s radar, but before they could scoop her up the CIA grabbed her first for her past as an international art thief.

The CIA wanted to exploit Napoleons connection to Mr. Le Bail, but nothing that they threatened her with would get Napoleon to tap into that well.

And they tried hard. Prison, torture (mild), it isn’t until they crossed the line into almost seriously hurting Napoleon that Mr. Le Bail steps in. A room full of exploded guards and one mid level supervisor later and the CIA learns to not fuck with Mr. Le Bail.

All goes normal during TMFU movie canon, other than Ilya having another issue working with Napoleon. He doesn’t expect an American and a Woman to be able to get the job done and is reluctant to admit he was wrong about both.

By the time Napoleon rescues him from the Harbor Ilya realizes that not only was he wrong, he might find Napoleon’s extreme competence very attractive.

Meanwhile Gabby and Napoleon get along like a house on fire, even if Napoleon refuses to tell any of them her birth name.

Art thieves should never use their birth name. To easy to follow them back home that way and the CIA wasn’t eager for any other agency to connect those dots either.

Come the end of the Movie, U.N.C.L.E. Has gotten what they wanted, and the CIA though they’d never admit it, are glad to wipe their hands off the ticking time bomb that is Napoleon Solo.

Mr. Le Bail watches and waits, wondering when he’ll be able to fulfill his pact with Napoleon. Based on how his charge looks at Ilya, and feels more and more comfortable with Gaby and Waverly, he knows it won’t be long at all.

And then the fic happens! And yes I am mapping that bad boy out.
