Otherworldly Zip-Tie Sculptures by Sui Park Crawl Across Galleries and Sprout in City Parks

Park’s latest projects include “City Ecology,” a collection of 32 sculptures nested in the flower beds and landscaping of Bella Azbug Park in Hudson Yards. Tucked within the lush greenery and dried, autumn leaves, the works are vivid, otherworldly additions to a green space within the city.

Get to know us!

Scent of Steam is a two person band from Pennsylvania, USA. Formed by Dawn, they play most instruments, write all music and lyrics, and mix each song in a home studio. Adam is the drummer and manager. A mix of industrial, rock and synth, there are several influences for their music. Adam and Dawn grew up listening to not only their favorite bands, but also played a lot of video games. From that, they've drawn quite a bit of inspiration from a wide range of video game soundtracks. Their most popular song is Dialing for an Answer, which has been described as "[…] dark, brooding, yet still fun." by Gabby Lang from The Weekender.

The Band

Born and raised in Northeast Pennsylvania, Dawn is a former physics major who decided to leave the prospects of a lab environment for the music stage. They had little to no prior experience with music beforehand. Without knowing how to play much guitar, and only having a usb mic with no amp, they made their first demo of Nothing I Could Say in December 2019 at 3:30am and never looked back.

Adam originally hails from South New Jersey, but decided to move up to PA to live with Dawn after knowing each other online for 6 years. With a ton of energy to expend and inspired by his favorite bands, Adam drew an interest in the drums. Once Dawn had made the demo for Nothing I Can Say, he was on board. Also having a robust background in business, he took up reigns as manager of the band.

Having only released their first album in April 2023, they have already garnered some attention. Here's a list of a few of their accomplishments so far.

Sunny’s schedule fluctuated between full-fledged chaos and nothing to do. She had been at the bar earlier in the day, attempting to get a grip on her orders for the week but she’d spent the afternoon having lunch with one of her dads. He’d met her near the art gallery and they’d shared a bite before he mentioned having some cool ‘art books’ that had been dropped off that he thought that one of her artsy friends might enjoy. She did have a rather eclectic friend group and there were several who were gifted. A peripheral gaze at the books let her know which friend she ought to give these to check out. She didn’t tend to like to drop in unannounced but she figured she’d find Gabby either at home or work. She opted to try home. She wouldn’t stay long if it wasn’t a good time. If she wasn’t home, she’d just leave it there and send her a text to let her know she had. She raised her hands to the door and knocked, figuring one way or another the gesture would be appreciated.

Omg that’s so fuckin adorable 🥹 he and gabby used to occasionally post clips of each other and he’d photobomb her selfies and shit. Back when he had that colorful hair they went from idk green to blonde to blue or maybe it was the other way round? I always found that so sweet.

Like maybe she goes online while at his place and people start asking about stuff. Like, at first, he’s in her video for a quick sec to wave “hi” but then someone comments something about how there’s a painting in the background. She sees it and is like “oh that’s Matty’s living room. He got it from this or that gallery cuz he loves the artist. Actually he has so many.” Then people ask to see them so she does a mini little tour. Matty follows her around the house explaining each one.

Then people are like Omg they’re so cute and start asking about other stuff. Favorite date night dinners or whatever, tv shows to watch together, someone makes dirty jokes and of course those are the ones that Matty sees and picks up on, haha. Or like someone wants to know the story of how they met and they can’t seem agree on the details of who asked the other one out first or whatever. Or someone asks if they could have a threesome with a third person dead or alive who would it be. And Matty keeps coming up with the most absurd answers ever making her blush and giggle and constantly nudge him to stop embarrassing her.

Someone keeps leaving comments about how she’s too hot for him and he’s a piece of shit and is into inappropriate relationships or whatever. And Matty is just like “just say you’re jealous. It’s okay.” And she’s trying to just shut down the drama and move past it before it devolves into Matty just saying random crap replying to haters.

Today then the start of the little series The Trouble with Larry from 1993. There were only six episodes aired and hard to find completely. Never mind, the content was also not easy. Cast (all episodes): Bronson Pinchot - Larry Burton Courteney Cox - Gabriella Easden Alex McKenna - Lindsay Flatt Perry King - Boyd Flatt Shanna Reed - Sally (Easden Burton) Flatt and others Story: During his honeymoon, the irrepressible Larry Burton is dragged off into the jungle by a large-sized male baboon and is presumed dead - eaten by apes. However, defying all odds, Larry survives and, after many comic-strip-type adventures, returns home to re-establish himself as head of the household - little realising that his wife, Sally, has married the staid and conservative Boyd Flatt during the intervening ten years, and that she is now the mother of a bright and lively nine year old daughter. Larry's return home causes considerable upheaval and consternation for the family - not least being his subsequent attempts to woo a reluctant Gabriella, his former sister-in-law, who had taken a distinct dislike to him prior to his disappearance and is still definitely opposed to the idea of getting to know Larry on a more intimate basis. —David McAnally (taken from IMDB again) Episode 1 "The Homecoming" Larry returns home on a ship, after being presumed to be dead for ten years. His wife, Sally, has remarried to Boyd Flatt and has a daughter named Lindsay. She has an art gallery where her little sister Gabriella runs the business. This is where Larry shows and kisses the unexpected girl. After some explanation, Gabriella decides to take Larry home where her sister's family has a discussion about a not makable vacation because of the bank. Well, Boyd wants to take care of it and this is when Larry comes in, surprising everyone and making Boyd faint. After some introducing, Larry invites himself into his new family and stays, helping out whenever possible - only to cause more trouble. Episode 2 "Witless for the Prosecution" The Flatts have a new neighbor who works at the unappropriate hours and gets so on everyone's nerves. When Sally, Gabriella and Lindsay go over to talk with the English man named Carl, they fall for his charm. That, clearly, doesn't go well with Boyd and Larry who come up with a plan to sabotage the man's car at night. First they want to break the windows but then to let oil out. Boyd goes under it to do it, yet Larry being Larry flattens the tire with Boyd still under it. Only in the morning, they can free the man and again Larry disrupts a peaceful agreement, so it goes to the court. As Boyd waits for his lawyer who turns out to be Larry again, well, Larry can convince the judge that the neighbor is at fault here. The family is happy once again.

Episode 3 "The Vigilantes" There is some robbery in the neighborhood and Gabriella is one of the victim. The Flatts babysit a bird but well, it can't be killed. Never mind, back to the robbery, in Gabriella's home was also Lindsay's bike and it's gone now too. The parents try to soothe her girl, yet Boyd and Larry dress up as soldiers to do some street watching but it never comes to it. Gabriella decides to check on the art gallery and Larry follows, and it ends with both of them being caught. Some short time later, Larry can free himself and annoys Gabby with his behavior - until the robbers return and he can convince them to join their club. Back at home, Boyd, Sally and Gabriella are tied while Larry distracts the robbers with rubbish. It works well until he claps his hands and knocks out the fat lady. A bit later, he does so again and hurts Boyd in the bathroom. Ouch! Episode 4 "My Science Fair Lady" Lindsay has made a science project for her school and left in the fridge. Unfortunately, Gabriella and Larry while being their usual selves, the project ends up in Gabriella's mouth and stomach. She throws up while Lindsay is sad. Boyd and Sally try to help and more but Boyd points out to have won all his school projects. Later that night, Larry is also trying to help and so how Sally and Boyd find him - with his head in the microwave. Not helping. The same night, Larry and Gabriella try to get some molt from toilets (YIKES!) but even this idea ends up in some bad jokes. So, Lindsay creates a soda volcano and well, the teacher gives the medal to his son who made a map of Africa, and not later, Larry shows up as human robot. Oh boy, and embarrassing. As it turns out, the teacher helped his son and Larry turns up in the end with 'airbag underwear'. You don't wanna know, believe me.

Episode 5 "Rhinestone Cowboyd" Anniversary time for Sally and Boyd, yet Larry disrupts it in the morning by wearing a fur of a wild pig. Sally kisses him briefly by saying that life would have been different with him around. Still, Sally is annoyed that Boyd does the same every year for it and Boyd thinks it's romantic. Neither has the guts to tell the other the truth. Larry enlists Gabriella's help at the gallery, completely ignoring that she has a customer. In the evening then, Gabriella sees for herself how boring the anniversary is, so the next day they all go to a bar named "Darlene's" where Boyd appears in a silly cowboy outfit. Larry appears as two different people to give Boyd a way to shine but the owner lady beats him to it. Boyd gets punched and Sally revenges him and takes care of him. Oh, as a little gift, Larry and Lindsay have stolen a koala from the zoo which later attacks Boyd. Ouch! Episode 6 "The Angel of Death and Taxes" Boyd is doing the taxes for the family while they deal with a hot summer. Needless to say, Larry has his own fun with it. Unfortunately, Boyd has to announce that the family can't go to the Wacky World in Florida and writes the check for the IRS. Silly of him to give it to Larry who made some changes and the Flatts get a refund of 48,000 $ - which they spend on a holiday and many other stuff they always wanted. After coming home and all, Boyd gets a singing telegram which tells him that all they have in their home will be repossessed. Surely enough, Boyd faints. When he's back, he looks over the paper and realizes that Larry is at fault and so he kicks him out. Larry ends up in the gallery and try to convince Gabriella to go with him to the IRS. She does so and both appear dressed up as Boyd and Sally. Never mind, they get on the man's nerves so much and heat up his room that he has a heart attack. To his luck, the real Boyd and Sally come and save the man's life and frees them from their debts.

CAUGHT ‘22

2022 is unlikely, it seems to me, to go down in history as a banner year for popular movies. But even in less auspicious years, there are always some good flicks, and some good or even great scenes or performances in movies that aren't so great overall.

Out of what I saw, here are ten movies that stood out as best for me this past year:

Nope--Jordan Peele's latest is probably the best UFO movie since Close Encounters, though it has a more sinister edge. It's wildly original, funny and creepy sci-fi/horror, yet it also carries the heroic charge of a good western.

Good Night Oppy--This documentary about the Mars rovers Opportunity and Spirit has interesting information about the Red Planet, but it's really about the way the NASA nerds anthropomorphized the robots and fretted over them and cheered them on and ultimately grieved over them. In an entirely unpretentious way, the movie hints at the question of where sentience comes from.

The Duke--This pandemic-delayed release was, I thought, perhaps the most overlooked and delightful movie of the year. Jim Broadbent is splendid as Kempton Bunton, a cab driver, factory worker and anti-television fee protestor who in 1965 confessed to stealing Goya's Portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London; Helen Mirren is his fed-up wife. The direction, by the late Roger Michell, is warm, graphically lively and period-rich.

Everything Everywhere All At Once--Family drama, immigrant saga, sly comedy, martial arts actioner, Matrix-style sci-fi adventure and more are mashed-up in this freaky yarn from writer-directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert that tries to live up to its title. It's epic, intimate, silly and profound. All at once.

Thirteen Lives--Dramatizing a technically complicated rescue mission in detail, Ron Howard is in his element in this moving account of the rescue of twelve Thai kids and their soccer coach from a flooded cave in 2018. A little tough if you're claustrophobic, but a true feel-good movie.

The Whale--Brendan Fraser gives a luminous, possibly generational performance as Charlie, a morbidly obese English teacher trying to reconnect with his furious estranged daughter. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, the movie is a little heavy and one-note aside from the star, but Fraser's radiance shines through the prosthetics.

Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down--Infuriating because of what Giffords lost when she was shot in 2011; inspirational because of how much she got back, and how courageously she refused to give in to despair. Directors Julie Cohen and Betsy West build the movie around how central music was to Giffords' recovery.

The Fabelmans--In Steven Spielberg's loosely autobiographical coming-of-age yarn, scripted by Tony Kushner, the focus is largely on the parents, beautifully played by Paul Dano and Michelle Williams. The movie isn't a grand slam, but it's fascinating, and it has the best final shot of the year.

Marcel the Shell With Shoes On--This feature expansion of the 2010 viral short by Dean Fleischer-Camp, with Jenny Slate voicing the tiny title character, is sunny and hilarious, but with improbably dramatic and poignant undertones. Isabella Rossellini is exquisite as the voice of Marcel's "Nan."

The Banshees of Inisherin--Martin McDonagh's black comedy about the agonies of friendship goes so sour in its later acts that I almost didn't put it on the list. But the brilliance of the initial conception and, especially, the magnificent acting of Brendan Gleeson, Colin Farrell, Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon demand its inclusion.
