The grex emerged from the hybridization of two moderately related “flowerfly” species approximately ~7200 years ago, shockingly recent compared to the evolutionary history of other species. Like other flowerflies the Grex themselves are only the female gametophytes of their species, their society is heavily built on the maintainence and protection of their large sporophyte “mother trees” as well as their immobile gametophyte males

Despite centuries of contact the species’ cultures are among the most impenetrable and poorly understood. Partly from a lack of clear centralization, the closest thing analogous to government are networks of couriers, communication and distribution “guilds” in their society bridging their various industries. Partly from individuals short lifespan results in quick cultural shifts( traditionally at around 15 years of age they become sexually reproductive and die, advances in medicine have extended their lifespan into their 20s).

Despite their keen senses of hearing, grex languages are typically signed using the position and movement of their modified antenna-like forewings. Relying on echolocation at night and in their often unlit building interiors, the grex just as often hear their “visual” language as much as see it.

Mercedes-Benz mostra G Turn em avenida de Las Vegas

A presença da Mercedes-Benz na maior feira de tecnologia do mundo, a Consumer Eletronic Show (CES) 2024, que decorreu de 9 a 12 de janeiro em Las Vegas, não se ficou pelo Centro de Convenções. A marca levou, também, à principal avenida daquela cidade norte-americana uma demonstração do processo de rotação total sobre o próprio eixo, “batizado” de G Turn.

A Mercedes-Benz apresentou na CES 2024 vários desenvolvimentos que definem a sua visão para a experiência do utilizador hiperpersonalizada do futuro – no automóvel e fora deste. Além do novo e integrado MBUX Virtual Assistant e do MBUX SOUND DRIVE (assim como a estreia na América do Norte do Concept CLA), a presença foi até às ruas de Las Vegas. E não foi uma artéria qualquer da cidade, mas antes a famosa Las Vegas Strip, troço de 6,7 km da Las Vegas Boulevard, onde se localizam a maioria dos famosos hotéis e casinos da cidade do Estado do Nevada.

Foi aí que a Mercedes-Benz efetuou uma demonstração com quatro unidades do concept do novo Classe G elétrico, que tem uma inovadora funcionalidade de rotação total sobre o próprio eixo, “batizada” de G Turn pelo construtor.

Esta função “G-Turn” permite veículo SUV girar 720 graus (ou seja, duas vezes 360 graus: duas rotações totais) sem sair do lugar. Essa função é facilitada pelos quatro motores elétricos e é acionada através de um botão no painel, semelhante aos bloqueios dos diferenciais, em conjunto com as palhetas no volante.

As duas rodas do lado esquerdo viram numa direção e as duas do lado direito na direção oposta. Este recurso pode ter utilidade em utilização todo-o-terreno, quando há exigências de curvas de 90 graus, dado que permite ao veículo girar sobre si próprio sem necessidade de espaço adicional (o diâmetro de viragem é igual ao comprimento da viatura), por ter uma lógica de movimento semelhante à dos tanques militares.

A Mercedes-Benz avisa que essa função é especificamente destinada para uso fora de estrada e não se destina a vias públicas. A tecnologia deve funcionar em pisos de terra ou de areia/gravilha e não no asfalto. Aliás, a manobra de demonstração na Las Vegas Strip, que foi realizada por profissionais e a via fechada com o apoio da polícia local, obrigou a uma preparação especial da estrada (por exemplo, foi molhada).

Icónico desde 1979

As origens do bem-sucedido modelo Classe G remontam a 1979. Durante mais de quatro décadas, o G incorporou o luxuoso veículo todo-o-terreno da Mercedes-Benz. A aparência exterior da lenda off-road da marca mudou apenas marginalmente durante todo o período. Mesmo na extensa reformulação de 2018, que trouxe consigo o maior salto tecnológico da história do modelo, a Mercedes-Benz operou apenas “retoques” no design típico deste icónico modelo. Há uma boa razão para isso: os componentes outrora puramente funcionais tornaram-se há muito tempo elementos de estilo icónicos. Estes incluem, por exemplo, o distintivo puxador da porta e o característico som de fecho, a robusta faixa de proteção exterior, a roda sobressalente exposta na porta traseira ou os atraentes indicadores de mudança de direção dianteiros.

O modelo vai receber várias alterações em breve. Além de melhorias aos motores a combustão e outras inovações mecânicas, estreará uma aerodinâmica profundamente melhorada, exigência que decorre, também, do facto do modelo passar a contar com uma variante 100% elétrica, a grande novidade deste restyling. Mais de 400 mil unidades e 45 anos depois, a tradição Mercedes-Benz Classe G está para durar.

Sunset Over Superheroes

Been missing my groups first ever campaign Grex (Great Expectations). One of my favorite pieces I have done of the crew since our game concluded.

Grex honestly will forever be my favorite original character. I'm sorry to Luka who comes in a very close second, but I love Grex's design so much.
