okay. i will attempt the impossible. but i Will be very biased and this is mostly about which episodes have my fav scenes ghsjdfhghfg from best to least favorite episode. let's go!! (spoilers: this is fucking long and i did both seasons!!!)
episode 1: pilot. because ??? it's literally perfect?? what do you want me to say. flawlessly introducing all the girls' pre-crash personalities. the shaunajackie homoerotic tension. "you are beautiful in the eyes of our lord". natalie wearing purple. pit girl!!!! she's been iconic since day 1!!!!
episode 10: Sic Transit Gloria Mundi. what can i say. i like beginnings and ends. i like high school reunions. i like death scenes that will haunt me forever and ever. and i still think that "who the fuck is lottie matthews?!" is one of the best lines ever
episode 5: blood hive. listen... nothing gets to me like a possession. to this day that's still one of my favorite scenes of the whole show
episode 9: doomcoming. absolutely iconic. pure chaos. also just the name doomcoming? instantly made history. "there's no bookclub?!?!?" also the aftermath of laura lee's death! how cute they all were getting ready together! jackie and misty. shaunajackie arriving together. lottie wearing laura lee's dress :) (smiling through the pain). TAIVAN!!
episode 2: f sharp. *whispers* cunt. ← literally all i need to say. but seriously. it's nice to see them already there. but not insane yet. and of course, "hello misty... you crazy fucking bitch <3"
episode 6: saints. HOMOEROTIC BAPTISM!!!! but also shaunatai!!!! miss sophie nelisse really has been acting her heart out since day one huh
episode 7: no compass. i really thought van was so dead here 😭 but that was insane. and i liked to see the adults still chasing ppl <3
episode 3: the dollhouse. LAKE SCENE!!!!!!!!!!! and the beginning of lottie's beef with the cabin <3
episode 8: flight of the bumblebee. this episode ruined my life <3
episode 4: bear down. i mean, one episode had to be last even if love them all!!!! i do!!!!! and as much as the competition was fun to watch, i think they should've killed travis the second that he pointed that gun at nat <3
and you know what???? i want to share my ranking of season 2 too 😭 gshjdfhgjfhg so
episode 1: Friends, Romans, Countrymen. lend me your ears!!!!! another perfect episode!!! i'm still getting chills every time i listen to seventeen and cornflake girl (which is several times every day). i think nothing compares to the feeling of watching shauna eat jackie's ear. also the day i fell in love with simone kessell as lottie matthews. i literally haven't been the same since then. also the teen lottie yell!!!!
episode 4: old wounds. listen.... i don't know what they put in this episode (laura lee's ghost and lottienat bath scene and adult van) but it literally changed me as a person
episode 2: Edible Complex. ella purnell acting as ghost jackie is seriously one of the best things i've ever seen. and the jackie feast!!!!! history was made!!!!!!!
episode 8: it chooses. when i tell you that i've never, never been so stressed as i was from the moment that they start drawing cards to the moment the credits started rolling in.... i'm so serious okay? worst night of my life. i wish i could live it again (bonus points for lottie losing it at her friends confessing their many crimes)
episode 7: burial. therapy time!!! bruce the goat!!!! 🥰 nothing compares to the feeling of seeing the adults just happily hanging out (plus florence and the machine songs!). and then shaunalottie sex scene shauna beating lottie up while the adults dance around a bonfire??? 1000% rewired my brain. i collapse on the ground every time i listen to lighting crashes (again. several times every day)
episode 6: qui. i fully support sophie nelisse emmy campaign <3 unnecessarily cruel <3 they fuckimg ate that baby <3 jackie's voice <3 high school reunion!! <3 that last scene will fucking haunt me forever and ever amen
episode 10: storytelling. this episode ruined my life <3 i will defend it forever though!!!!! i swear i will!!!! i'm yellowjackets episode 2.10 number one defender!!!!! the natalie coronation scene is my favorite thing in the world. and i loved to watch the cabin burn, idk if i was the only one but i did NOT expect it!!! can't wait to see them huddling for warmth on a pile like puppies on season 3
episode 3: digestif. baby shower 🥰!!!! and i'm a simple lesbian, i just want melanie lynskey to point me with a gun
episode 5: two truths and a lie. teen nat comforted by adult lottie like adult nat will be comforted by teen lottie in a few episodes will haunt be forever. but, "i'm so sorry bestie", literally no one wanted to see that much of randy walsh

Thoughts on Danny Phantom: A Glitch in Time
If you want the tl;dr of my thoughts on this graphic novel, it's simple: I LOVED IT! And I want moooore!
SPOILERS GALORE BELOW
I'm soooooo happy with all the dialogue and characterization, it is just spot on! I could perfectly hear the original voices of the characters saying these lines, this comic could literally be a new episode of the show and it would fit seamlessly! No 2020's slang or memes, no wokeness that wasn't there before, just pure Danny Phantom. The only few indications of the comic having been written in 2023 is the use of words like "selfie" and "goat", and those are already old enough now that they don't feel that blatant.
Needless to say I'm sooooo glad this story's main premise is on Dark Danny, the fact that that storyline never came back in the show was always a sore spot for me. And not only Dark Danny but Vlad AND Clockwork come back for major parts to play? This is like the most wish fulfilling fanfic ever, except it's CANON!
But yeah, love that Vlad got to come back, it's always funny when he has to work together with Danny, AND the fact that he gets a redemption of sorts at the end fixes one of the many things I disliked about the show's finale - it had always felt like this was a villain character that could have and should have gotten a second chance to do some good.
Ahahaha I had completely forgotten that Tucker was made mayor of Amity Park in Phantom Planet, and ngl it was a great move on the comic's part scrapping that idea immediately, that had always been pretty silly.
I wish we could've seen just a little bit more of Danny interacting with his parents now that they know his identity as a half ghost, but considering they weren't major characters in this plot (and considering how things end up) it kinda makes sense.
The important thing is that we still got lots of cute wholesome hugs between Danny and his friends. :')
Aaaaaah Dark Danny is so cool! The art style was really cute but the author also managed to make Phantom look just as dark and menacing as he was in the show.
The best and most disturbing joke was Danny seeing that Vlad still had a clone of him in stasis, ahahaha! And this actually comes back to play an important part in the plot later!
I'm glad Valerie got some moments to shine in this too, I never liked how her and Danny's whole thing was just kind of rushed and brushed aside in the show's finale. Now we can see, she still doesn't completely trust him!
If there's just one thing I fault this comic with, it's the whole glitching through different timelines thing to make filler action scenes. I felt like they ate up page time for nothing.
"I put you two in the ground before, I can do it again" HOLY FRICK THAT'S DARK, DANNY!
I really love the lore surrounding the ghosts that was added. Given that Butch Hartman has said the ghosts aren't actually deceased spirits of real people, the explanation given here actually makes the fact that we have ghosts like Poindexter, who was a living boy once, make sense without negating what he said. It also very simply explains why we have weird formless or creature-like ghosts, something I'd never even thought to wonder about.
I did think it was a little too easy for Danny to get his powers back after that explanation (and dang, as if he hasn't been compared to Spider-man enough XD), but I love what it did for Vlad's character arc.
I don't know how I'd never thought before about Dark Danny and Vlad interacting but WOW I needed to see that! God what a deliciously complicated relationship - Vlad literally adopted this version of Danny and made him who he was! And again, what a great way to develop Vlad's character making Dark Danny show him exactly what would result from him getting what he'd always wanted in making Danny his protegee!
Clockwork Dark Danny looked so cool~
"Why was I the one who lost everything?" God this part punched me in the gut.
Clockwork returning Danny and his friends back to the status quo of the show would usually annoy me, but I totally see that this is the author's way of undoing the results of Phantom Planet and leaving the story open to doing the ending over again - and I'm all for that! You know, if in fact we do get more comics after this.
Which it seems like we will because we kinda left Valerie on a cliffhanger there?
And Dark Danny is now a kid again and back with Vlad, heck yeah! Again, I need mooooore! Bring back Dani next!!

Feels unreal that this is the last episode. 7 years of nothing besides Dramarama, and now I've watched an entire new season fresh out of the oven.

Firstly, Raj comforting Bowie over his loss while Priya is celebrating her win is so sweet. Second, yipiiieie new season confirmation!!!
A short but sweet ending!!! Excited to see what the alternate ending for Bowie will be like. Hoping it's the canon ending lol.
This season has been so much fun to watch, and has been soooo refreshing compared to previous seasons. As much I love Revenge of the Island (my favorite season overall) and enjoy All-Stars (my childhood favorite season), they can feel a bit... much, at times. This season kept everything simple by going back to basics, using the old formula from og Island, while still using everything the writers have learned from every other season. And then improved all of that. Despite the characters being based on stereotypes as always, most of them have been shown to be waaaay more than what they were based on. And it creates good representation for more groups of fans like queer and disabled people, as well as adding even more good bipoc representation. And for me the cherry on top of the writing is making the main couple of the season be a friendship instead of a romance. I won't deny potential lesbianisms are afoot with Priya and Millie, and I'll probably looking for fic of the two when I'm not scouring Ao3 for RajBowie lol, but their friendship is so sweet and wholesome and such a breath of fresh air.
The art and animation are the best they've ever been for the series. I can feel the amount of love and care that went into making this season and am very excited to see what's in store for the next season. So many of the drawings and perspectives have blown me away. And the 3D!! Genuinely it's some of the best bits of 3D work I've seen incorporated into 2D animated TV. They matched the style to the 2D artwork so well that it just blends in, and without a keen eye or closer inspection, you wouldn't even know it's 3D. Really hoping they experiment with more 3D and even try bigger scenes in the next season.
Despite my praise for this season, there's still a few hiccups. As much as I gush over Raj and Bowie, their relationship still feels a bit shallow. The characters themselves are great, much more fleshed out than I thought they'd be for their introductory season. But Raj's elimination felt like it cut off all development between the two way too soon. I know they agreed to put any relationship at all on hold until after the show ended, which is the smartest thing any couple in this series has ever done, but I still feel like they could have developed a bit more of a hook to get viewers invested and wanting more for next season. Instead of the hook mainly being them sharing some looks and a few kisses, and that RajBowie is the show's first canon gay romance, y'know? Beyond that: the entire farting episode is just disgusting toilet humor at best and a poorly disguised fetish at worst. Emma's entire arc was thrown right down the drain at the last second when she went back to Chase (TWICE). And the early boots, as always, didn't get any chance to shine. Rip all Caleb, Axel and Nichelle fans, y'all were robbed as soon as they handed you something.
All in all, setting my biases aside for my personal favorite season, Island Reboot has probably been the best season of the series since og Island. Personally, I don't think it tops Revenge of the Island for me, but its pretty darn close. I haven't felt this much joy watching Total Drama since I watched ROTI and All-Stars for the first time. It still feels unreal that we have a new season of the show AND another one on the way. My hyperfixation of the show came back at the perfect time and I can't wait to make and reblog fanart and fics!!

I just finished Teen Wolf and I'm not okay 😭 finishing a show is one of the worst feelings ever. Not that anyone cares but here's my breakdown of how I felt about each season..
Season 1
This season was cute and a bit cheesy lol. The acting was interesting to say the least but obviously it was most of the actors' first major acting role so it's understandable that they'd be a bit cringe....well minus Dylan O'Brien's amazing self. He was great even from the beginning (as you'll notice I'm quite biased lol). This is probably an unpopular opinion but Jackson was an enjoyable character for me. He had his flaws, but something about him made me like him a lot (it didn't help that he was played by Colton Haynes who is absolutely wonderful). I would also like to add that Lydia's character development is phenomenal as the seasons go on. Seeing her and Stiles together here and comparing it to the final season.....ugh beautiful 😭 also this may be an unpopular opinion? I love Peter Hale lol
Season 2
This season was so much better in terms of acting and storylines. The scene at the end with Jackson "dying" and then coming back to life was insane. I was legit on a rollercoaster of emotions during that entire final episode. Also this was the season that gifted us the lovely Isaac Lahey. What an amazing character that deserved nothing but the best.
Season 3
THE GOAT SEASON. ICONIC. FLAWLESS. BEAUTIFUL. VOID STILES >>>>>>>> This season was absolutely incredible and Dylan O'Brien deserved a shit ton of acting awards for his performance as Void Stiles. Anyone that thinks this was just another "teen show" needs to watch this season because it's so much more than that!
Just a few more thoughts....
Although Allison annoyed me at times, I sobbed like a baby when she died.

ISAAC DESERVED BETTER!!!
The Stydia panic attack kiss killed me!!!! I will forever be mad that the writers didn't make them official this season. Not to say I hated Stalia because they were cute too (her being the big spoon ❤) but Stydia just felt right.
Aiden's death scene was top notch acting. I was bawling my eyes out.
Season 4
Derek's last full season 😭 ngl this season is lowkey forgettable only cause it followed such an amazing season with a great story arc. It was also randomly 12 episodes again like???
Season 5
This season was great! So much Stydia!!!! The whole Dread Doctors story arc was interesting and kept me fully invested especially considering it was a storyline for both parts of the season.
Not to mention this season introduced us to Theo Raeken aka Cody Christian! Don't know if this is an unpopular opinion or not but I loved his character even when he was a little shit lol.
Also Kira deserved better!
Season 6
I truly enjoyed 6A. Although it was annoying not seeing as much of Stiles as I would have liked, it was still very much a Stiles-centric season. Being the Stydia shipper I am, I legit cried like a baby when they finally reunited, what a beautiful scene 😭😭 Holland and Dylan's chemistry >>>>> also seeing everyone forget Stiles was so heartbreaking and I was an absolute wreck the entire time. I need to stop getting so attached to fictional characters 😂
6B wasn't as great as 6A for obvious reasons, but the finale was amazing! Minus the fact that the writers screwed us Stydia shippers over. But they're endgame and that's all that matters.
Just a few thoughts about the series finale
The scene with Derek and Stiles had me dying!!! The way he's carrying him and he faints at the sight of his toe being shot 😂😂😂😂 it was beautiful.
The scene with Stiles at the beginning spitting out his water when he sees Derek 💀
Seeing them all come together made me so happy, seeing Peter and Theo join the "good" side was rewarding because I enjoyed both of their characters so much and just wanted them to be part of the pack.
Liam and Theo >>>>>>>>
Lydia and Jackson's reunion was AMAZING!!! I cried and laughed so hard.
Ethan and Jackson ❤❤❤
Seeing Ethan without Aiden was quite sad.
Overall, I truly regret not watching this when it was airing. By rewatching the show I've also reignited my slight obsession with Dylan O'Brien 💀💀 that man is an amazing actor that deserves the best. Honestly all the actors deserve nothing but the best. Hopefully in the future a little TV movie or something happens because I need more Teen Wolf in my life.

I’m positive Ivan especially will be beefed up. The civilian models are really awkward at times and clearly not prepared to be put in onesies (it’s hard to explain and maybe someone more experienced with propotions/anatomy will be able to say it better, but their limbs don’t have a lot of “shape” to them I guess?).

(Alternatively, another heroine is victimized and Ladybug is visibly jealous/her annoyance at Chat is treated like jealousy.)

I just had a horrible thought that they’ll do the episode like--
Chloe treats Sabrina terribly like usual, Sabrina ditches Chloe and Chloe is miserable + takes it out on everyone else for it, then Chloe gets akumatized over it and Sabrina gets the dog (for “loyalty”), which leads to Sabrina going back to Chloe so that Chloe will direct the abuse more solely towards Sabrina because “she takes it out on others otherwise”/she’s “used to it”/”it’s her responsibility and this is the right thing to do.” This will also be presented as the “right choice” and Chloe and Sabrina’s relationship will basically not change for the sake of leaving Chloe the way she is.

Honestly Brook is a little socially off. Unlike Sanji who's is kinda women-obssessed,Brook tends to mostly say it cause he has less social graces then Luffy and seems to use it to break the ice.
Now out of universe it's a stupid joke that should die, and to be fair Brook does lessen it in the future.
Re-reading One Piece along side you is a trip, especially when comparing your analysis to mine.
Ive come to realize I'm far more jaded when it comes to anime humor, so much so that I just except it as part of the medium. So much so I mostly just focus on the jokes that are more creative, and the other apsscts
You actively hold it to a higher standard while still treating the story as slightly separate from the comedy. You want the comedy to be better, not resorting to cheap jokes. This is also true for all the aspects of the anime/manga, whether it's the art or the pacing
I guess that's why your the Anime Binge Watcher. Still fun to compare and contrast how I enjoy the medium, verses how you do.
I definitely have higher-than-normal standards for anime, yeah. But that's only because I've seen just how damn amazing this medium can be at its best. Gintama, Sangatsu, Evangelion, FMAB, Angel Beats, Yorimoi, Literally Everything KyoAni Has Ever Done... when anime creatives put their all into making anime the best that it can be, nothing even comes close. These stories are proof that you don't need to fall back on cliche. You don't need to settle for the laziest possible jokes. You don't need to include the worst of anime in order to make something worthwhile. It's possible to make a masterpiece without a single pervert character, or groping gag, or anything else in that general ballpark.
And yes, even some of those shows I mentioned have moments like that, and I consider those flaws just as much as I consider them in One Piece. But no one thinks FMAB is the peak of anime because of that one accidental pervert scene in episode 46. Nobody holds up Gintama as GOAT because of the running gag where Gintoki accidentally gropes Tsukuyo. K-On is not considered a beloved masterpiece because of season 1's Sawako Dress-Up jokes. In fact, I can't think of any anime or manga that are beloved because of these elements, and not in spite of them (aside from ecchi, where the fanservice is the whole point anyway). Like, would My Hero Academia have been any less successful if Mineta never existed? Has his inclusion ever been anything but a barrier to more people checking out and falling in love with this show? If so, I haven't seen it.
Honestly, I think it's that lack of necessity that makes this such a big deal for me. If we woke up tomorrow and every joke of this nature was scrubbed off the face of the earth, anime would easily carry on without missing a beat. The only thing that would change is that maybe now, even more people would start enjoying this medium now that they no longer have to navigate a minefield to do so. So it matters to me whenever an otherwise good anime or manga hurts itself with this kind of laziness. All you're doing is making it more difficult for people to like your stuff, Oda! The funny skeleton would not suddenly stop being funny if he could no longer ask to see girls' panties! If anything, he'd just be funnier! You don't need this shit! You're better off without it! Think, Mark, Think!
...man, this rant got away from me, lol.
TL:DR, I get compartmentalizing this kind of comedy as "just part of the medium," and if that helps you enjoy the good stuff better, then more power to you. God knows, I wish I could do the same sometimes. But as long as anime keeps doing this stuff, I'll keep complaining about it, because I know this medium is capable of doing so much better.

okay i finally (finally!) finished gr*duation after what felt like three hundred years and i have many thoughts that i just.. want to get down to process my own very VERY mixed feelings on this season
overall it was a fun romp at the end with some highly enjoyable goofs. i enjoy fitz maplecourt so much & relished griffin being able to do a character. the firbolg lives in my heart. argo is great.
that said, the plot was, overall, messy as shit, considering at the end i still had very little clear idea of a) what exactly order/chaos wanted to achieve and b) why the fuck they were even doing what they were doing. we spent all that time on a hog heist that, in the end, had... very little to do with what was going on at the time. (would the narrative have been significantly changed without the hog heist? if, instead, hog hadn’t responded due to their internal greed/indifference - something that’s already been established in world and isn’t a stretch to imagine - and thus had the exact same ramifications and end result as the heist gave us? like don’t get me wrong, the heist has some of my favorite goofs in it, but it’s essentially like six episodes of nonsense that, in the end, has almost nothing to do with the main plot & whose end goal could have been summed up in the finale.) the whiplash of suddenly taking gray on as an ally to we’re heisting hog for reasons to actually the real threat was the demons at the castle attacking now for reasons is... bad plot. (look at how many times i have to say ‘reasons’ bc there’s no real in-universe or external force that explains why something is happening at that specific time.)
i haven’t listened to the final ttazz about grad but it kind of felt like travis just gave up on his narrative arc and this sloppy plot mess is what we have left. like, okay order/chaos is a cool concept but what were they actually trying to achieve? why could order just be booted out of their shared body and why didn’t they just do that instead of having that whole climatic battle? why both using fitzroy at all for anything if they could always just take over the world with demons? why did we have all these characters allied together if in the end we were going to op the three pc and have them fight basically one-on-one with order? why did the commodore suddenly and inexplicably switch sides after working with the boys literally like three episodes ago other than to shoehorn in a conclusion to argo’s arc that, ultimately, fell short bc it was so utterly anti-climatic?
and like!!! maybe some of these questions were answered but none of them to an extent that felt grounded enough in the narrative that they made sense, lingered, or didn’t feel like a macguffin to cover a sudden plot twist or plot hole. a lot of plot felt sacrificed for cool concepts and fun character twists and i get that, but when all you have is cool concepts and fun character twists, there’s no real foundation for it to rest on.
i AM going to compare to amnesty bc i do think amnesty is the strongest arc plot-wise of the three major seasons of taz. balance recovers in the back half but the first three parts are very loosely connected to the major plot and then there’s that huge info dump in crystal kingdom so like - it’s also messy there, even though it manages to make it work in a way that graduation doesn’t. but amnesty is tightly plotted from the beginning - there’s a clear trajectory, foreshadowing built in, characters have actual arcs that make sense, most of the major villains and antagonists have motivations that make sense and even the act three twist is something that’s reasonably built in from the beginning. even if it wasn’t ALL planned (such as billy the goat’s involvement) it’s clear that new elements were worked into an already existing framework with an eye towards cohesiveness. i know people complain about the main three not being “together” enough or “friendly” enough with each other (as if that’s all that matters in a good story lmao) but i also think that amnesty has the strongest character arcs of the three seasons because we do see all three major characters start in one place and end up somewhere radically different, make movements in cohesive and reasonable ways, and change in a way that is not off-the-wall or just for a fun twist.
graduation... doesn’t really do that. the main three are a fun time but in the epilogue i was genuinely struggling to get why fitz decided to suddenly be a lawyer or why the firbolg, who has never shown any interest in having a name before that moment (quite the opposite, really) is suddenly emotional over having a name. argo, who has spent all of his time honoring his mother, decides to... run a cruise ship? and even leaving aside the epilogues, these characters... don’t really have an arc. argo is the closest and even his emotional narrative falls flat bc the commodore’s ending is so anti-climatic and bc, other than the trial scene, he and the commodore largely don’t interact. if the commodore had played a larger part in the actual narrative maybe it would have felt less like an aborted attempt at an arc but. he didn’t. fitz also has an attempt at an arc but it also falls flat bc so much of fitz has remained unchanged from when we first meet him. he’s a little more empathetic and better at magic, but how has fitz really changed since the first episode?
(tangent: thinking again about justin having to ask why the firbolg was doing what he was doing during that whole dog-is-the-headmaster reveal portion, to the point of asking travis point-blank why his character was doing the things he was doing. thinking again of how travis just told the boys point-blank that this side character they couldn’t even remember the name of was their best friend. and then again about how that “best friend” just like... fucking disappeared from the narrative after that, never to be seen or heard from again until the epilogue twenty episodes later for two brief seconds. in fact pretty much every character except rainier just disappears from the narrative at a certain point and i’m pretty sure it’s in reaction to the complaints about the numerous characters - but the answer to those complaints wasn’t to just mysteriously cut everyone else from the narrative without warning or reason laksfsafjlfj. what happened to that one villain posh guy from the first episodes???? what about the accounting owl teacher??????)
this is just my rambly processing of grad bc i’m trying to figure out what about it fell so dramatically flat for me that it was a literal slog to get through most of it even though i found the characters themselves delightful and enjoyed the mcelroy goofs as much as ever. and i think the thing is... for some listeners, the most important thing is going to be the interaction with the players or the goofs or how friendly and found family-ish the main group is with each other. which is great and fine! but for me, a good story or good character arcs or something well thought-out and plotted out is always going to be more engaging, no matter how much i like the found family or how much i like the goofs. it’s why i struggled to get why people complained so bitterly about amnesty - who cares if the main three are always together or getting along really well or being friends if they’re having interesting, satisfying character arcs and personal growth set in an interesting, dynamic plot? in graduation, that foundation is just missing and i’m sure part of it was due to the unnecessarily vitriolic backlash against travis (that’s enough to steal anyone’s thunder) but also just like... an underdeveloped plot in an overdeveloped world, a trap so many authors have fallen into. (like travis can describe in minute detail the inner workings of hog that are only applicable for about five episodes but chaos/order’s motivations are largely handwaved despite them being the central antagonists for the entire season.)
anyway. once again, great goofs. i would die for fitzroy maplecourt. but i can’t imagine ever listening to the whole thing again or even more than a couple of episodes here or there (ironically of the hog heist, which, despite how unnecessary it was, was a fun romp and had some of my favorite moments. so, you know. sometimes unnecessary is still good lmao).
#also if literally anyone says that it's all bc of travis' adhd or w/e One More Time i will lose it#look i also have adhd and i am still capable of writing a cohesive plot okay??? having mental illness does not#somehow prevent you from being able to write a cohesive and well-thought-out story#i do think he got some very unnecessary backlash and a lot of the problems in gr*d were also present in early balance#the difference is that balance... balanced out eventually and grew stronger#whereas gr*d collapsed in on itself and became a mess plot-wise#and even tho i enjoyed the characters i felt no real emotional investment in their arcs bc their arcs were... not really arcs#anyway i dont regret listening to it BUT it was a slog & i dont think i'll ever really relisten#taz

Random musings on 10.18 Find Me
Other Carylers have spoken about the episode and their interpretations of it and what it means for Caryl and their future and I've been sharing those and don't have that much to add to what’s already been discussed. Others have written well thought out and detailed analyses and interpretations and said it way better than I ever could. Most of them have been writing about Caryl forever and I started less than a year ago. I do want to speak to some technical stuff and a few other things, since I never do know when to shut up. Spoilers for 10.18 below the cut.
Brief talk on techie stuff... Wow, the cinematography in the plus six are really taking it up a notch. 10.18 has some of the most gorgeous images in the history of the show. The colors, the framing, and Caryl; separated by a stretch of water that's a literal stand-in for the divide between them, in an episode stuffed with signs and symbols and parallels. "Find Me" has some of the most visually breathtaking shots in the history of TWD... and do you know why? Because the plus six were filmed on digital cameras, for the first time in the history of a show that has always been shot on 16 millimeter film. Turns out, the digital process not only has fewer "touch points" (thanks for nothing, COVID) but it's also cheaper, faster, and easier on the environment.
TWD almost switched to digital for Season 2, and while AK claims now that they can still give it that classic TWD look, in a 2019 interview posted on comicbook.com, she said they were committed to shooting on film to preserve it's look and feel (confirming that film and digital are noticeably not created equal, an opinion/truth they are apparently backing off of, now). If the new episodes look different, its because they are. I am torn between which style I prefer. The grainy, Kodak-y type images of TWD as shot on film are increasingly rare on any screen, simultaneously nostalgic and beautiful and born of toxicity. The gallons of chemicals used in developing standard film are not environmentally friendly and probably need to go the way of the dinosaur.
Digital is wonderful in its own ways, so minute in its details, and can easily capture images and light conditions otherwise incredibly difficult to duplicate on actual film... But digital doesn't look the same, it doesn't feel the same, in the way that CD's and vinyl records don't sound the same. Purists curl their lip at the new and improved version of the medium, but the truth is,most people don't notice the differences.
TWD has always used the sun and the moon to their best visual advantage and both the celestial backdrops show up in "Find Me." The sun filtering through the trees onto Daryl or in his general direction has made repeat appearances in S10. Is this a metaphor for his finally finding his enlightenment? (Or is it nothing deeper than AMC uses the light to make everything look as cool as possible?)
10.18 shows us more of Daryl's soul (in a single episode) than we've seen before. His character goes through all sorts of colors, screaming in the rainstorm, grimacing as puppy Dog licks his face, meeting and spending time with this strange, lonely, gruff, almost mirror reflection of himself, someone who is grieving and angry and alone. Fighting with Carol! A real fight, but an honest and not altogether unhealthy one. You gotta work through to acceptance and let go of the past before you can look forward to a future, and these two have enough trauma issues between them to fill a psychiatric journal. They’ve a long, arduous road ahead of them, but they WILL reach their destination. Together.
Daryl throwing the fish at Leah's door and Leah throwing the fish at Daryl are my favorite moments in the episode. I laughed out loud. I did not get the impression that they only encountered each other once every several months, I took it that the time jumps measured the progression of their relationship, i.e. that it took that long for them to warm up to each other. When Daryl did go to stay at Leah's, it was literally out of necessity, as he was getting frost bitten in the woods and probably would have lost at least a digit or two had he remained in his camp.
For the first time, I didn't really enjoy the Caryl banter? (Please don't hurt me.) There was a sadness, a tension, and a sense of loss there I just couldn't shake. Carol was trying to run away from the horrors of the Whisperer's aftermath, and Daryl knew it, and he was annoyed by it. Carol's attempts at lightheartedness seemed forced. I feel like Daryl is a man with a whole lot on his mind at this point, and that Carol is a woman who is habitually trying not to think about the real stuff if she can avoid it. She jokes and banters but she's almost too cheerful... or maybe it just seems that way because Daryl's so grim. Not grim as in we're-all-facing-our-end-of-days-doom grim, but not in a laughing mood where Carol's concerned. He thinks she's running again, and seeing Leah's cabin reminds him that Leah probably ran from him, too. He lost both his brothers, Rick and Merle. Daryl has abandonment issues and an overdeveloped sense of responsibility going back as far as we know. He loses people and can't find them again, no matter how much he searches.
Revisiting Leah's cabin, the devastation of Alexandria, and everything that's been building up over, about, and because of Carol has pressurized within Daryl till he finally takes a shot, and who can blame him? But he also shows his development and maturity by trying to express his disappointment with controlled words of frustration (compared to camp- or barn-rage Daryl in S2), telling Carol exactly what it is she does that's widening the chasm between them.
Carol to Daryl early in the episode "I don't want to lose you because you can't figure out when to stop," and Daryl to Carol "That's on you. 'Cause you don't know when to stop.") Daryl doesn't know when to stop searching for his lost brother and blaming himself for things, Carol didn't know when to stop her revenge-fueled pursuit of Alpha. Daryl also tells Carol "That's all that matters. You being right." (after she says she was right to go after and destroy Alpha to avenge her son.) At the end of the ep., Carol says it again: "I was right" (this time about their luck having run out), then she goes to fix the door.
So now Caryl know and have established what gets each other's goat. That could be a good thing, but tptb will undoubtedly attempt to convince us its a bad thing,, ya think? Neither of the characters knowing when to stop and their mutual annoyance over the fact could be something the show runners milk for a while.
Î wanted to know whether Daryl went back to the cabin after leaving his note, to see whether Leah had returned to it, or not. I want to know what Carol did with the note. Did she take it with her, or did she put it back? They never showed us. Daryl seemed anxious and tense about her finding it, and I did not miss the symbolism of Carol being the woman who eventually finds the note Daryl left behind years ago: "I belong with you. Find me." I mean, how perfect is that?
Contrary to spoilery bullshit stinking up the Twittersphere, Carol did not seem exactly “upset” at finding the note, though clearly she was sad. She knew exactly what the note was, so Daryl must’ve told her about it, that he left it. Maybe he didn't tell her exactly what it said or everything about Leah, but my impression was that she realized what it was and where they were, and it was all yesterday's news to her. Seeing the note seemed to make her sad for Daryl because she knows Daryl can't handle losing people, and that he punishes himself for failing to help or save people by pushing everybody away and isolating.
Leah didn't so much choose to be there in the cabin as she ran for her life from a dangerous situation and the cabin was just the place where she and her bitten son ended up.
So many yawning gaps in the Leah storyline. How often did they see each other? Did Daryl move in with her toward the end of their relationship? I felt like he did after the time she found him freezing in the woods, but that he'd leave for days to go look for Rick, or hunt, or who tf knows. Maybe he'd leave to see or meet Carol. Carol knew about Leah, but when? Before, or after it was happening? Why is that important? I just want to know when he told her. Really hoping they didn’t leave things purposely vague so they can fill in the gaps to screw with us later.
Timing is everything. Like, how much time passed between Leah telling Daryl to choose, and the time Carol told Daryl she couldn't keep visiting? Or did he leave Leah's cabin and return to it that same day? Which would imply Leah abandoned Daryl practically the instant he walked out the door following her ultimatum. It seems like Daryl was gone a while, it was dark when Leah told him to choose, and daylight in the scene with Carol at his camp and when he was walking in the woods. It could have been days. That makes a difference. Leah was obviously not Daryl's first choice, no matter that he ran back to her in the end.
The fact that Carol knew about Daryl's relationship with Leah is a crafty move on the show runner's part because we can't really be pissed at Daryl if Carol knew about it the whole time and was cool with it.... but we all know now that Daryl didn't tell her everything.
No one is talking about how Leah obviously abandoned Dog, she left him shut in the damn cabin for who knows how long after she left. And she DID leave. The cabin looked abandoned when Daryl left the note. He obviously went searching for her with Dog, but for how long?
Not to say there was nothing between them, but I never felt for an instant that Leah had Daryl's heart, or that he ever offered it up to her in the first place, but I am also 100% sure that’s because I’m ride-or-die for Caryl and can’t bear to entertain the thought. No matter what else they were, Daryl and Leah are isolated, damaged, traumatized people who wanted someone to hold on to. Someone to try and forget with. It's not like there were a lot of other people around to choose from.
So did Leah just leave Dog behind because the memories associated with him were too painful? (i.e. he was born on the day Leah's son died) Or did she feel that Daryl needed the companionship and gambled that Daryl would drop by soon and take him in? It really bothers me that she just split and left the dog locked in the cabin like that.
Grateful they didn't show us anything extra of Daryl seeming to genuinely give a shit, tbh. (Throwing a fish at someone's door, having sex with them, sleeping in their bed or eating their cooking doesn't necessarily constitute giving a shit in this world, just saying.) That was both refreshing (cuz u know, Caryl is endgame), and kind of tragic. I felt like Daryl was rather emotionally detached the entire time, but that Leah was maybe falling in love with him. Not in a good way, but in a possessive, demanding, all-or-nothing type of way.
How very very clever of AMC to leave us with all these ambiguities. So much room for interpretation, so many gaps to never be filled in. Bastards. On the bright side, all these holes in the story and missing material provide endless new opportunities for fanfic writers like me who can't break free of the bonds of canon. So, yay, I guess?
I am sad to give up the virgin Daryl trope, I was beginning to think that one was ours in canon to keep, but you know, it is what it is. It was a good, long run while it lasted, and I'm grateful we got to write inexperienced Daryl fics while we could still entertain the fantasy that Daryl was actually inexperienced. So, R.I.P. virgin Daryl. I'm not as upset about his getting laid as I thought I'd be (although it was incredibly underhanded, AMC, to pull this shit so very late in the game, there better be a good reason for it).
All the Leah thing means to me right now is that our man has probably picked up some skills during his time with her, and Carol's gonna be the ultimate beneficiary. Plus, Daryl's evolved over the years from throwing a fish at a woman's door to delivering her dinner on a tray with a flower, so...progress was made, even if he didn't start out with the woman we wish he had. (News Flash: The love of his life was unavailable and actually married to another man at the time, so there's that.)
There are a staggering number of Caryllels in this episode. Someone once said here that Kang loves her symbolism and they weren't wrong. No matter what's to come, we can be confident about where this road ends. At this point in TWD, to not eventually give us Caryl canon would be the absolute greatest trolling of a fandom in the history of trolling fandoms, and besides, we're getting a spin-off.
Another thing, the fact that Rick and Leah both basically disappeared on him shines a bright light on Daryl's determination to stick to Carol like glue in 10A and B. He was terrified that she was going to disappear on him, too.
What happened to the Caryl fandom following the spoilers wasn't worth it. How many times have we freaked out over spoilers? You think we'd learn. And you KNOW we are valued because AMC went so very far out of their way to provide the vaguest-ever depiction of a sexual encounter for Daryl. Remember the Eugene spying scene with Abe and Rosita, guys? Shane and Lori screwing on the ground in the woods? They could really have tortured us, and they chose to be kind.
I'm looking forward to "Diverged." Honestly, I could give a shit about most of the other characters, but they'll have to make do for us over the next couple of weeks. Just about the time 10.18's been dissected and interpreted to death, Caryl will reappear on our screens and mess with our hearts and minds some more. I can't wait.

Going in blind: Watching season 3 for the first time. Random thoughts.
Episode 1: I know in the original series She-Ra was the sister of He-Man so I'm curious how much of that will be carried over to this series. Not saying He-Man has to make an appearance, same as how Batman didn't need to show up in Teen Titans. That was Robin's story, not his, and similarly this is Adora's story, not Adam's. Regardless, it makes sense why Hordak was so annoyed with the baby Adora in Shadow Weaver's flashbacks. To SW, there was something different and special about the baby, but to Hordak, whom seems familiar with the world before Mara separated Etheria from the rest of the universe, including Eternia potentially, Adora is just another "First One" child like he's seen many times before. Special in comparison to those who only know Etheria.
Great clap-back from Catra to Hordak, and not entirely unfounded. It's debatable how much he actually cares about conquering Etheria. He has others leading his forces in his war yet all his focus is on his portal creation.
According to Entrapta, productivity of the Horde is up 400% ever since Catra became Hordak's 2nd in command. I wondering how much of that is Catra's direct doing? Is she genuinely just that good of a commander? Is it because she's properly delegating and Scorpia has been handling most of the load? Or is this just because it's in comparison to Shadow Weaver? Entrapta said Catra's focus on First Ones' tech has been greatly aiding them and SW definitely focused more on magic, which was an aid mostly to herself since everyone else in the Horde seems to fight only with weapons and technology. And most of what she saw of SW while she was Hordak's 2nd was her being obsessed with bringing back Adora rather than fighting the war.
Episode 2: Let's see... Hordak's easily an adult and Entrapta is...[checks google] late twenties, early thirties. Oh good, then let's sail this ship!
But yeah, that was a heck of a backstory for Hordak. This reminds me of a video by a Youtuber named Savage Books comparing the villain Steppenwolf in the theatrical and Snyder Cut versions of Justice League and how, while he still wasn't a great villain, just a small addition made him a much better villain, that being a failure in his past and the desire just to go home. And in this case, Hordak is the much better, or at least way more developed, version of that. One of many clones of Hordak Prime but having a defect that labelled him a failure and had him cast out to Etheria, a "backwards world" as he's called it before. If he can conquer Etheria, perhaps by building a portal that'll bring forward Prime's army, he believes that'll prove to Prime that he is not a failure and that he can return home to rejoin his forces. Just this bit of backstory adds SO MUCH to Hordak, including new insights on his past interactions, and keeps him from being a flat character like theatrical version Steppenwolf. His lack of tolerance for failure makes sense when he himself is trying to prove that he's not. It gives him compelling motivation to want to conquer Etheria beyond just power and greed. Not motivation you're meant to agree with but one you can still understand.
I like the story with Huntara too. It's a nice little tie-in to something Adora was talking about with Glimmer and Bow last episode. Adora defected from the horde, not because she was different but rather very much in spite being very much like every other soldier there. She wanted to believe Shadow Weaver may have at least some goodness in her too and now we have Huntara as a fellow defector who realized the evils of the Horde, even if she chose to stay out of the war entirely after.
Episode 3: I legit thought Catra stabbed the goat lady for a second.
After Scorpia asking her why don't they just stay in the wastes I'm seeing a bit of a parallel between Catra and Hordak. They've both found a place where they can be the top dog, where they can do and have basically anything they want; her with the wastes and him with the Horde. They can be happy. ...But there's still this pull they're feeling to somewhere else. Catra back to the Horde and Hordak back to Prime. Because they feel they have to prove something; prove that they're not failures. They could be happy but they can't let go.
And that scene between Adora and Catra at the end. That was such a great line read from Catra's actor. "She left me for you. Everything that's happened is because of you." I got chills.
Minor note: While I'm only judging off the Mara hologram, which didn't have color, I do think the She-Ra outfit looks better with pants than shorts like Adora's She-Ra form. I think it makes it look sleeker, if that makes any sense.
Episode 4: Catra's spiral has turned into a drill and its taking her down as far as she can go. Though something I had to a laugh a little at myself over was that my biggest "Catra, no!" reaction wasn't to her wanting to open the portal but rather when she lied to Hordak and said Entrapta let the princesses in. She was actually a positive influence on Hordak's life and Catra with one move just destroyed that relationship and all progress Hordak had been making.
I'm guessing there's going to be some kind of long-term effect from Shadow Weaver continuously siphoning off Glimmer's magic. The woman is basically a parasite and the magic she uses is very different from the kind Glimmer does. I can't believe it never occurred to me that since Shadow Weaver trained Glimmer's father there might be a connection there between the two of them later in the story. While we don't know about anything that might've happened after she left, SW clearly had enough affection for Micah still to not kill him. I could see her trying to take Glimmer on as a student later like she did him.
Episode 5: There is something kind of hilarious about it being Scorpia's jealousy of Catra and Adora's closeness that causes her to be the first one after Adora to pick up that something is off.
11 is my favorite of the Doctor Who Doctors so naturally I'm comparing all this to the crack in Amy Pond's bedroom wall. Whatever goes in gets forgotten about and basically never existed. Though does that mean Bright Moon isn't going to remember the Horde? Basically that entire place got sucked up in the collapsing reality. There shouldn't be at war anymore because their enemy literally no longer exists.
Adora and Catra had their own little Star Trek 3 moment there.
Adora: "If we don't help each other, we'll die here!"
Catra: "Perfect! Then that's the way it shall be!"
Catra's just so far down her spiral she doesn't even care about getting her own win, just so long as Adora doesn't get one, despite just minutes ago clearly loving having Adora back in her life and on her side, to the point was trying to resist remembering the old reality. Her "perfect" world was them together again but when given the chance (another of many. I love those cuts to their past woven in there) she slapped the hand away.
I'm sure I'm wrong but I'm starting to theorize Madam Razz is actually Mara and just at some point went kind of crazy and started thinking as and Mara were two different people.
Episode 6:
"You are everything I ever wanted in a son. This... This is everything I ever wanted in a life. ...But I've got responsibilities, Van. And...I have to...go now."

That was my favorite episode of JLU, where Superman is trapped in this world that isn't real but still perfect in every way, and the only way out was to give up everything he'd ever wanted, including a son he remembers watching grow up, even if it never really happened. With a similar premise, this definitely helped elevate Angela up a bit for me, whom I was kind just meh with before. I didn't dislike her but I didn't really care much for her either. This episode gave her a lot to work with though, with the heavy sacrifice she made. Not just saying behind to pull out the sword but just simply forcing herself to accept her husband is gone and not coming back. I was right that they wouldn't remember the Horde, but I definitely didn't think of the full effects of them never existing. They never exist, Bow never becomes a rebel instead of a scholar like his dads wanted. They don't exist, Micah never dies in battle against them. Glimmer gets to grow up with her father in her life. Everyone, most especially Angela, has to reject everything they would love to be real in favor of what actually is.
I'm guessing we're going to have Shadow Weaver taking advantage of this situation, trying to act like a teacher and mother-figure to Glimmer now that she's basically a orphan.
I talked before about how Catra and Hordak seem to have a parallel between them, especially regarding failure. Catra seems like she has a very hard time accepting her own failures and mistakes and thus why she more or less uses Adora as a mental scapegoat for all of it. Nothing is ever really her fault, it's Adora's, or Shadow Weaver's, or Hordak's. It makes for a great moment when Adora finally punches back, both literally and figuratively. She's not going to accept responsibility for Catra's actions anymore. She gave Catra every chance to make the right choice and she didn't, so now she has to finally live with the consequences. Heck of a glare She-Ra gave Catra at the end. Very much a "If I ever see you again..." and it certainly scared Catra, at least for a moment.
Now, someone go save Entrapta from Beast Island!
Season 3 verdict: Easily the best season thus far. I know this was technically the second half of season 2 but even in comparison to the full season 1 there was just so much that happened in this, so much that got revealed, and so, so many moments of emotion or tension. Weirdly I feel kind of disappointed that Hordak Prime is probably going to come in now and be the new big villain. I really like our Hordak's motivation and Prime seems like he might just be the generic conqueror for power that Hordak seemed like he was going to be at first. Not saying those types can't work. I love All For One from My Hero Academia and Frieza from Dragon Ball. Those guys are pure evil and selfishness, but they also have a captivating presence/charisma to them.
Naturally, since I bring her up the most out of all the characters, I'm very curious to see what happens with Catra now. She's basically nuked every positive relationship she had with anyone. Entrapta's gone, she threatened Scorpia, Hordak's not going to trust anyone including her anymore now that he thinks Entrapta's betrayed him, and Adora firmly sees her as an enemy. She has no one (those under her direct command don't count) and it's entirely her own fault.

Ian Martin’s Strange Paradise, Part II: The Top 5 Worst Things
Last week, I listed my top five favorite things about the first 44 episodes of Strange Paradise, when Ian Martin was headwriter and when the show had a very different feel to it than in the final four weeks of the Maljardin arc. But no creative work is perfect, and, despite my fondness for this show, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think that the writing for early Maljardin had several glaring flaws. Unlike Danny Horn, I don’t think that Ron Sproat was a better writer than Martin (actually, I consider Sproat the worst writer on SP), but that doesn’t mean that I don’t also feel that his writing needed some improvement. Note that this entry is specifically about the writing during this period, so things outside his creative control (e.g. the Conjure Man’s questionable casting) will be excluded from the list.
That said, here are my top five least favorite things about the writing in the first nine weeks of Strange Paradise:
5. Cheesy dialogue
More specifically, (1) bad jokes and (2) slang that was already outdated when these episodes originally aired in 1969. This one is #5 because, while these lines are cheesy, I can’t hate them because most of them make me laugh. Even my personal least favorite of Jacques’ jokes, the “pose” line from Episode 18, is kind of funny in an ironic, anti-humor sort of way, like the dad jokes that have become fashionable in recent years. While there are some jokes in this show that I find genuinely funny--Elizabeth’s Song of Solomon joke, for instance, or “the lady doth detest too much”--most others are the epitome of cornball. Sometimes you hear both in the same episode: Episode 21 is loaded with Devil jokes/puns that would be unforgivably corny if Colin Fox didn’t possess enough charisma to sell them, and yet the same episode also features a genuinely hilarious double entendre. The good jokes sneak up on you, sometimes amidst a hurricane of bad ones.
As for the slang, some comments that I’ve read mention that it was largely out of date even in the late sixties. My good friend Steve (with whom I often discuss SP) has told me that “you might not be aware of how campy that slang sounded in 1969 since you obviously did not live through the Sixties--this happened with a lot of TV shows during that period, the most egregious examples being the various ‘evil druggie Hippie’ episodes of DRAGNET.” Apparently Martin became infamous for using outdated slang later on when he wrote for CBS Radio Mystery Theater, putting lines like “I dig a man who’s far-out!” and “I think bein’ around here’s gonna be kicks!” in the mouths of some of his younger characters. Even if he had used up-to-date slang, it most likely would have still aged poorly (as slang typically does), especially for generations born after phrases like “the most” and “making the ___ scene” fell out of use.
4. Slow pace and excessive repetition
This one is also low on the list, because slow pace and repetition weren’t flaws when the show originally aired, but instead have aged poorly because of advances in technology that made them unnecessary. Before the advent of the programmable VCR, you had to be able to catch the program you wanted to watch on time or have someone you knew catch it on time and record it--which, in 1969, would have meant an audio-only tape recording. This meant that only the most fortunate and/or most loyal viewers would have been able to watch Strange Paradise every day, making it necessary to recap all the major events in subsequent episodes for those who missed out. This is also likely the reason why early SP (like most soaps of the time) has a relatively slow pace: if too much happens in one episode, you have to recap more and the people who missed the big episode are more disappointed.
Nowadays, with DVRs, video streaming, and DVD sets--not to mention certain legally-questionable means--it’s nearly impossible to miss an episode of your favorite show (with few exceptions), making extensive recap largely obsolete. Screenwriters can cram as many plot points as they want into one episode and no longer have to write five episodes of the other characters reacting to the news if they don’t want to.
Even so, just because the constant recap served a function at the time doesn’t mean I have to like it. It gets annoying hearing the same plot points reiterated episode after episode. Like I said while reviewing Episode 21, “if someone were to remake this show for Netflix or another streaming service, they could safely ignore about 75 percent of the original scripts and condense the remaining 25 percent quite a bit without omitting anything important.”
And don’t even get me started on the lampshading of absent cast members, like in Episode 9 when Jean Paul and Quito wasted two minutes searching for Raxl just to slow the plot down. It’s nothing compared to Ron Sproat’s “we must search for Quito” filler episode in Desmond Hall (Episode 78), but still, those scenes were pointless.
3. Extreme artistic license with certain historical/cultural details
Although Ian Martin did a surprising amount of research on certain subjects for Strange Paradise, there are some subjects where he either didn’t do enough research, or (more likely) made extensive use of artistic license. The first one is his portrayal of Jacques’ wife Huaco as an Inca princess despite their marriage occurring over a century after the fall of the Inca Empire. I discussed this all the way back in Part II of my review of the pilot, where I invented the theory of Jacques traveling back in time to marry her, but other possible explanations include Huaco being a 17th-century descendant of Inca royalty (as the Quechua people are still alive today), extreme artistic license, and/or critical research failure. I don’t know if we would have eventually gotten a good explanation if Martin had continued writing the series, but we would need a damn good one for the approximate equivalent of having a 21st-century character marry the Russian Grand Duchess Anastasia. I’m willing to suspend my disbelief and accept it considering that this is a fantasy series, but it still creates a lot of plot holes that need to be filled.[1]
Another example of artistic license about which I feel more ambivalent is the conflation of voodoo with the Aztec-inspired indigenous religion of Maljardin, which I’ve discussed before both in my Episode 23 review and Part I of this post series. I’m not sure if this is genius--religious syncretism is a real phenomenon throughout the Caribbean and Latin America, and some people today do syncretize the vodou Serpent God with Quetzalcoatl--or just an instance of Martin playing fast and loose with facts. I would like to think it’s the former, but it could just as easily be the latter (hence why I referenced it on both lists--I have mixed feelings about it).
2. Annoying inconsistencies
Does Raxl know that Jean Paul is possessed by Jacques Eloi des Mondes? Does Vangie? Why does Jacques’ portrait disappear in some episodes after he possesses Jean Paul, but not in others? All three of these things vary from episode to episode, and change annoyingly often as the plot demands. Steve and I have also discussed this subject in the past, and he believes that Martin used this device to make the story easier to follow; if that’s the case, it appears that he used Raxl and Vangie as audience surrogates, especially for new viewers or people who didn’t tune in every day. But surely there were other ways to do that without creating continuity errors? It may have served a function, but that doesn’t make it good writing. What Martin is essentially doing is filling and reopening the same plothole, episode after episode.
Regarding the portrait, I don’t know how much to blame Martin’s scripts for this inconsistency and how much to blame the directors, as I don’t have access to any SP scripts beyond the pilot script and the Vignettes. However, I’m going to assume that he’s at least partially to blame, because at least the pilot script mentions the disappearing portrait (which literally disappears in all three of the Paperback Library novels), Also, while none of the characters ever mention the portrait vanishing (unlike in the tie-in novels), some of his episodes have characters looking at it while Jacques is controlling Jean Paul and commenting on the uncanny resemblance. 1. Tim’s subplot
It should surprise none of my regular readers that Tim’s subplot is my #1 least favorite thing about the first nine weeks of Maljardin. I’ve already written an entire post about why I dislike this subplot, so I’ll keep my discussion of it here brief. Jean Paul saves the life of artist Tim Stanton when he hires him to paint Erica’s portrait, but then does nothing to make the commission easy for him--which is not a bad set-up for a plot in and of itself, but the execution is terrible. Tim chooses to use Holly as his model despite her barely resembling Erica, and Martin mostly uses their subsequent interactions to drive the old, tired, clichéd plot where two people who bicker and hate each other at first eventually fall in love (or at least he appears to be setting that up[2]). The payoff for the Holly portrait subplot finally occurs in Episode 33, but it’s underwhelming (not to mention barely recapped) and the already bland Tim quickly becomes a background character. In short, his subplot is a boring waste of time and should have either had more payoff or--preferably--been scrapped altogether.
That concludes my list of the worst things about Ian Martin’s Strange Paradise. Stay tuned for my review of Episode 45 within the next two weeks.

[1] Interestingly, there is a possible (if unlikely) historical explanation for Huaco’s sister Rahua having “skin as white as goat’s milk” and “hair like ripened wheat.” An early Spanish account of the Chachapoya people (aka Cloud People) of the Northern Andes describe them as “the whitest and most handsome of all the people that I have seen, and their wives were so beautiful that because of their gentleness, many of them deserved to be the Incas’ wives and to also be taken to the Sun Temple.” Assuming the Spanish account isn’t made up, this proves that reality is sometimes unrealistic.
[2] Thankfully, given the soap opera genre, it’s unlikely that Tim and Holly would have stayed together forever, even if they had eventually fallen in love during their painting-and-bickering sessions. Even so, that doesn’t make it a good subplot.

Smiles every day (One-shot)
Book: The Royal Romance
Pairing: Drake Walker x Amara Suarez and...another pairing but you’ve guessed by now :D
Rating: PG, but as always my foul mouth couldn’t help itself and let some bad words slip through the cracks :p.
Word count: about 2,500
Notes: This is set after the events of my previous one-shot, The Parent Trap! So, roughly 2+ years after the events of Book Two. I can’t help myself, I thought I would just not spoil anything in terms of Book Two, but I’m sure you guys are already seeing pretty clearly in everything I’m doing by now, so… let’s just enjoy this :D I hope you like!

‘Knock knock!’
Maxwell peeks his head through the door before Amara can respond, and he’s immediately greeted by an overly excited Yoda.
‘Hey love,’ Amara says with a smile, ‘come in, don’t mind the mess.’
Maxwell looks around, thinking that the place is immaculate compared to his on a good day. Especially now. ‘Don’t get up!’ He warns, lowering himself to hug Amara where she’s sitting.
Ever since she and Drake told them about the pregnancy, after their return from Philly, Max has been completely overprotective of Amara, treating her as though she may break. Nothing bad can happen to his Little Blossom.
‘Can I make you some coffee? I was just doing some work, but it’s time for a break anyway.’
‘No!’ Max protests, ‘I can do it.’
Amara rolls her eyes. ‘You and Drake are exactly the same. I’m three months along, I’m not ready to pop yet. I can still make a coffee.’ She closes her laptop and gestures for Max to follow her to the kitchen. ‘That’s why I sent Drake to work. He hasn’t been at the restaurant since we got back, and he really needed to get out of my face.’ She chuckles.
Maxwell smiles warmly at her, all the while absentmindedly petting Yoda. ‘Sorry, Little Blossom. I completely understand his point of view, though, we both know how you can overdo it, so—‘
Amara holds up her hand to shut him up. ‘Alright, that’s enough pregnancy talk. Tell me about you, instead. How’s the big move-in treating you?’
Maxwell can’t contain his smile. ‘Oh, just awesome. I’m realizing how ready I was for this. We’re starting to really get our bearings, after all, it’s been a month now, and Callie seems to be really in love with the house, and the proximity to the Beaumont estate and the animals… We’re just having a blast.’ He pauses. ‘Amara, there’s something I need to tell you. Show you. I guess.’
Amara turns to him and hands him an espresso cup. ‘Yeah?’ She asks worriedly.
Max wrings his hands together nervously. ‘Wow,’ he whispers, ‘this is a lot harder than I thought it would be. I, um… you know how much I love your brother. More than anything. And, you know, I may be a little… out of control sometimes, and I may not be the most mature.’ He rolls his eyes. ‘I guess you could say I’m a bit impulsive. Like when I bought Bradley Cooper, for instance, I mean, great decision, he’s the best goat I’ve ever met, but at the same time, I did buy him on a whim at the farmers’ market one morning.’
Amara squints at him as she steeps her tea. ‘Babe, get back on track.’
Maxwell chuckles, tapping his pocket to check it’s still there. Oh boy, he thinks, if he’s already nervous now, how is it gonna be tonight? ‘Yes,’ he continues, ‘you’re right. So, as I was saying, I’m usually pretty impulsive. But this isn’t impulsive. It’s thought through, it’s been on my mind for the past few months, and, if I’m being honest… for the past two years, really.’ He takes a deep breath and puts the box on the table.
Amara’s eyes are like saucers. ‘Is this…?’ She stammers.
He nods, and pushes the box towards her. She takes it tentatively.
As she opens it, her eyes fill with happy tears. ‘Maxxie… this is so lovely.’
He breathes a bit more easily. ‘Yeah?’ He asks. ‘You think he’ll like it?’
Amara nods furiously. ‘Oh yeah. He definitely will.’ She hands him the box back.
Maxwell can barely keep himself together as he takes another look at the ring he picked for Michael. A simple gold band, classy like the man he loves. He closes the box and pulls another from his other pocket. ‘Now there is something else that I’d like you to see. It’s a little… out there. Don’t hold back on feedback.’
Amara wipes a tiny tear and holds out her hand to take the little box. It’s small, light purple, made of velvet. When she opens it, she gasps. ‘Oh Max, it’s so lovely. Fuck, this is so thoughtful.’ She takes the little pendant in her hand to get a closer look.
Max nods. ‘Phew. I didn’t want to leave her out of this decision, so I had this engraved for her. Is it too much?’
Amara admires the delicate gold pendant, on a intricate little chain. The pendant is a lovely oval, with an engraved peacock, and the words ‘We are family’ etched on it. On the peacock’s head, three teeny-tiny aquamarine stones.
‘Fucking hormones,’ Amara mutters as she wipes away more tears that keep coming. ‘Callie will love it.’

Amara closes the door behind Maxwell and takes Yoda in her arms. ‘Are you excited too, baby?’ She whispers, kissing the little corgi’s head. She plops down on the couch to snuggle with the dog, who’s all too happy to get so much attention.
As she’s halfway done with her episode of Schitt’s Creek, the front door opens. ‘Hey babe,’ Drake says with a smile.
Amara sits up. ‘Hey hun, you’re back so soon!’
Drake throws his jacket on a chair and joins her on the couch. He ruffle’s Yoda’s hair and gestures for Amara to lay down in his arms. ‘I missed you.’
Amara smiles as she nuzzles into Drake’s neck. He might be annoying and overly worried, but he’s her pain in the ass. ‘I missed you too,’ she whispers as she kisses him deeply. ‘How was the restaurant?’
Drake smiles. ‘Pretty good. They barely need me over there. Rashad’s got the situation under control as always, and the kitchen team is awesome. They said they’d handle things whenever I can’t be there.’ He kisses her hair softly. ‘I’m lucky to have them.’
Amara smiles. She’s happy to see him so happy at work. It wasn’t a given when he opened his restaurant a year ago, but everything worked out for the better, and now he can fully enjoy the perks of doing what he loves. Plus, Rashad’s investment money was nothing to scoff at.
‘What about you, babe?’ Drake asks. ‘What have you been up to?’
In her comfortable state, she almost opens her mouth to tell her about her own morning and about Max’s news, but she refrains. After all, he asked her to keep it to herself until Michael has given a response. Not that he would ever say no, but she has to respect Max’s wishes.
She clears her throat. ‘Oh, you know. Yoda and I just hung out. Watched Schitt’s Creek. I did some studying for the Cordonian detective exam. The usual.’
Drake frowns and nods. ‘Hm. Good.’
Shit, she thinks. He knows she’s lying. Quick, she needs to change the subject. ‘Oh, and look, I did some research for the nursery, and I think we should go with this.’ She opens a new window on her laptop and shows Drake some furniture options.
Drake smiles and puts his hand on her already growing bump. ‘Fuck,’ he says, ‘this is so exciting, I can’t wait to meet our little Peanut.’

Drake is slicing some peppers to dip in his homemade hummus while Amara is making some mocktails. Out of solidarity, he’s not drinking during her pregnancy either, so they have gotten quite creative with Amara’s cocktail book. Tonight, they’re having virgin piña coladas.
He hears a car pull up into the driveway, and looks through the window to see Michael’s Honda. ‘Hey babe,’ he says to Amara, ‘your brother’s here with Max and Callie.’
Amara stops the blender and gasps. ‘Yeah?’ She asks excitedly.
Drake raises an eyebrow. They saw them yesterday, why is she so excited all of a sudden? ‘Y-yeah. We might wanna make a little more drinks.’
Amara can’t contain an infectious smile. ‘Mmhm,’ she nods, biting her lip.
‘Alright, weirdo, I’m gonna go open the door,’ Drake chuckles.
Callie is the first one to come in, and she throws herself in Drake’s arms. ‘Uncle Drake!!’ She exclaims. ‘It smells good in here, what did you make?’
Drake hugs her back and laughs. ‘I’m making hummus, and some veal stew.’
‘Yay!’ She yells, throwing her hands in the air.
Michael and Maxwell aren’t far behind, and they both hug Drake as they come in. Callie facetiously mimes zipping up her mouth, and plops down on the floor next to Yoda.
Maxwell clears his throat and says, ‘Hey guys, um, sorry to come by unannounced—‘ he winks to Amara, who looks like she’s about to explode out of excitement— ‘but… we have something to tell you.’
He looks to Michael, who continues, beaming with joy. ‘So, today, Maxwell proposed to me, and…’ he shows off his left hand. ‘Obviously I said yes. We’re getting married!’
Drake’s jaw drops. ‘Guys!’ He exclaims. ‘Congratulations!’
Amara jumps up and down. ‘I’m so happy for you!!!’ She wraps them both in a warm hug. ‘Congrats!’
Drake joins in, as he struggles to keep his shit together. ‘Guys, this is such great news.’ Oh no, he thinks. It’s coming. ‘I, um…’
‘Babe, are you okay?’ Amara asks with a look of concern on her face.
Drake nods, fighting back tears. ‘Yeah, I’m just… shit.’
Callie shoots him daggers. ‘That’s a dollar in the jar, Uncle Drake!’
Drake can’t stop the tears from falling. ‘Sorry kid. Sorry guys. This is just so great, I don’t know what the… what is wrong with me, it’s just…’
‘Awwwww, Drakey,’ Maxwell squeals, ‘you’re too cute when you’re emotional!’
Drake takes a deep breath. ‘Shit—sorry, I know, another dollar for the jar—guys, I don’t know what’s going on with me, it’s just…’ he pauses and sighs. ‘You’ve been through so much together, and Max, seeing you with Callie has been so inspiring.’
Michael wipes off a tear. ‘Drake, come over here. You need a hug.’
They all laugh as Drake complies.
Callie taps her aunt’s leg. ‘Hey Auntie Amara, can I sleep over?’
Amara giggles, ‘Of course sweetie, tonight?’
Callie nods. ‘Daddy and Max are going to a restaurant to celebrate.’
Michael breaks away from the hug and grimaces, ‘Oh yeah, right, that’s partly why we came here… is it ok for Callie to stay here tonight? Max got us a reservation for three, but Callie doesn’t want to go…’
Callie nods. ‘It’s very boring. I’d rather be here and eat some veal with you.’
Drake chuckles. ‘Sure. The more the merrier.’
Maxwell jumps up and down. ‘Thank you guys! We tried my brother, but um… there was an incident.’
Callie sighs in an exasperated way. ‘Auntie Amara,’ she says gravely. ‘Bartie threw up on my shoe.’ She pauses dramatically. ‘On my shoe.’
Amara gasps. ‘Oh wow, well we can’t have that! I promise you no one will throw up on you here.’ She turns to Michael and whispers, ‘Thank God my morning sickness is over.’
Michael laughs. ‘Good thing! Guys, we really appreciate it, and sorry for the late notice.’
Amara shrugs. ‘No problem. I had a hunch this would happen. Come on, Callie, let’s get you situated in the guest room, and then we’ll have a mocktail, ok?’
Callie claps in excitement. ‘Yay, a cocktail!’
Drake looks at his wife disappear into the guest room with their little niece, and turns to the guys. ‘Sorry again for the… whatever the fuck that was. I’m so happy for you guys.’
Michael claps Drake’s back. ‘No worries, Drake. It’s nice to see you so in touch with your emotions. Welcome to being a dad…’
Drake chuckles. ‘Yeah, I can’t even blame the hormones, but here we fuckin’ are. About tonight, do you guys want me to call my buddy at the Portavira Inn? See if he’s got a suite available? Since we’ve got Callie…’
Michael looks at Maxwell, and they both nod enthusiastically. ‘Thank you, Drake,’ Maxwell says, pulling him into another hug. ‘That’s so sweet! We’d love that.’
Drake grabs his phone. ‘Alright, let me give him a call, then. Take a seat, you guys can have a little hummus with us before leaving, right?’

Once Max and Michael have left, Amara, Drake, and Callie sat down for dinner, punctuated with endless chatter from Callie, and little excited yaps from Yoda. Amara looks on to her little niece with love. She could get used to this.
As Amara gets up to clear the table, Drake stops her in her tracks. ‘Nope, Suarez, you’re going on the couch with your niece to rest. I got it.’
Amara almost protests, and then remembers that she’s about to insist on doing dishes, which is essentially insane. She nods and kisses her husband on the lips. ‘Thanks, babe. Come on, Callie, let’s go color!’
‘YAY!’ Callie exclaims, as if she couldn’t ever run out of energy. ‘Auntie Amara, can you paint my toenails while I color?’
Drake peeks his head from the kitchen. ‘Um, I don’t know if nail polish is safe for a pregnant woman, hun.’
Amara takes a deep breath. ‘Drake Walker. If you take nail polish away from me, I got nothing left. Please chill out.’
He holds his hands up in defeat. ‘Alright. Sorry. Overprotective mode deactivated.’
Callie giggles. ‘Yeah, chill out, Uncle Drake. Auntie’s not gonna eat the nail polish. She’s not stupid.’
Callie picks a gold nail polish, which Amara gleefully applies on her niece’s toes. Callie sticks out her tongue as she applies herself to coloring a drawing of a cow in a field. Amara looks up at her little niece, all smiles. ‘So babe,’ she asks. ‘Did you like your necklace?’
Callie nods enthusiastically. ‘Oh yeah. It’s so beautiful.’ She fishes it out of her top and shows it off to her aunt. ‘I love the little peacock. It’s so cute.’
Amara oohs and aahs as if she’d never seen it before. ‘It’s gorgeous, sweetie. Were you surprised, today?’
Callie shakes her head. ‘No. Maxxie asked me last week if it was okay. He said it’s my decision. I said of course, because I love having as many daddies as possible.’
Amara’s heart skips a beat. ‘Yeah?’ She asks, her voice breaking.
Callie nods. ‘Yeah. It’s scary having just one daddy. Papi’s in my heart, but he’s not here everyday to cheer up Daddy or play with me, you know.’
Shit, Amara thinks. It’s gonna take a lot of focusing on the nail painting in order not to cry to this one. ‘I know, sweetie,’ she manages to say. ‘But remember what your necklace says, right? We are family. All of us.’
Callie beams. ‘Yeah. I know. I like that.’ She pauses. ‘Besides, living with Maxxie and Daddy is so much fun that I want it to continue forever. That’s why I said it’s okay with me. Daddy was really sad before he met Maxxie. Now he smiles every day.’
Amara gasps for air. Nope, she can’t cry now. Poker face, Suarez. ‘That’s right,’ she says softly, ‘and Daddy also makes Maxxie really happy.’
Callie smiles. ‘That’s true! Maxxie is always smiling.’ She looks up at her aunt. ‘You used to never smile. Like, never never. And then you came here to Cordonia and you smile all the time. It’s nice.’
‘You’re right,’ Amara chuckles. ‘It is nice.’
Callie points at Amara’s belly. ‘And I think he’s gonna smile a lot too. Because I’m gonna be the best big cousin ever.’ She pauses. ‘Unless he throws up on my shoe.’
Amara laughs wholeheartedly. ‘Yeah? We’ll do our best to avoid it, then.’
Callie giggles. ‘I’m excited to see him, I think he’s gonna be cute.’
‘You got that right,’ Amara chuckles. ‘So, you think it’s gonna be a boy, huh?’
Callie makes a face and snorts. ‘Oh yeah. But you should now that I’m still gonna paint his nails.’

My Thoughts on GoT 8.01 (“Winterfell”)
So, this is late, but I watched S8, E1 (”Winterfell”) with my Dad and Brother and had some thoughts (these thoughts are from my first time viewing it, but I was too insecure to post them until a magnificent mutual of mine suggested it).
Spoilers, but the warning might be irrelevant by now. Featuring running commentary from my family because they’re amazing.
So, maybe I’m alone, but I’m not that fond of the new opening. Sorry, it just looks cheaper to me than the old one somehow, even though I read somewhere that more money was spent on it
That child climbing a tree gave my entire family and I some serious Bran/Arya nostalgia, as did that Baratheon theme
Arya’s little smile when she saw Jon half filled me with joy, and also half broke my heart. So much has happened since they last saw eachother. So fricking much
Arya looking at the Hound in a parallel to S1, E1 has been found
Non-verbal Gendrya is life
Oh, yay, an obligatory manhood joke to start off the season. Ugh. You know, I’m really tired of them at this point.
So......... can somebody remind me why Tyrion is even here anymore? And how he became the least interesting remaining Lannister by far?
Missandei and Grey Worm’s little “wow, they hate us” look is honestly the best thing. To quote my Brother: “Finally, two people that can take a hint”
Dany is upset at people not kissing her boots - shocker. Look, sweetie, it’s been a rough couple of years for the Northerners. Not to mention the last time they had a Targ in power he burned their liege lord and had his heir strangled. And that Targ was your father. So no duh they’re skeptical
Yeeeeeeaaaaah... I don’t think giving a good portion of the people you’ve supposedly come to “save” heart attacks with your WMD children is the best way to establish you’re a “great” ruler

Just a little over ten minutes into the episode and I’ve already reached new levels of Dany hatred
Entrance to the Winterfell courtyard parallel to S1, E1 spotted
Jon riding in and seeing Bran is making me cry. Like, the last time he was riding towards a family member was with Rickon, the only “sibling” (aside from Sansa) he thought he had left - only for Rickon to die moments before he reached him. And here’s Bran, his “brother” who he thought was dead up until recently, sitting there alive and (mostly) well, and I just... *sobs uncontrollably*
Compare and contrast how happy Jon is to see Bran vs. how “who cares?” he was when finding out he was alive in S7 and tell me that political!Jon isn’t real. Tell me
... I thought we were supposed to get non-robo-Bran this season, but, so far, I don’t see it
My Dad is honestly cheering because Bran’s looking at Dany all creepily. He’s just thrilled someone’s giving her some variation of the stink-eye
That Jon and Sansa hug is not the same one that was released, and I’m a little disappointed. Let Jon give bear hugs to his entire family 2k19
Sansa/Ned parallels from S1, E1 and I’m loving it
Dany is literally the embodiment of all her stans who thought she and Sansa would be besties and braid eachother’s hair. Sansa is the rest of us who knew better

I’m going to take a moment to appreciate how Kit subtly incorporated and conveyed each of the five stages of grief in this scene
“It’s treason”/”It’s the truth”. I mean, maybe it’s just me, but Jon seems almost terrified to hear this news. Which tells me he’s well-aware of how Dany could react to it. Which tells me he’s not as daft as he’s letting on.
“You gave up your crown to save your people. Would she do the same?” Sam knows what’s up and I love him all the more for it

- “The kids here just don’t know you.” Yet! Come on, Ed, you could have invited all the Runaways, the first abducted metateens so the kids could relate to someone who go through the trauma. Virgil should be known in the Center! He is one of their own already! And that should have been Virgil’s character motivation to be part of the Outsiders and not the skin color... Black characters are more than just black they’re humans, you know? Where are the writers who wrote the other POC characters in the previous seasons? Anyway, the reason to do this for the kid would have been unnecessary if it was written properly with this character arc for Virgil because Ed was fine as a peer councelor to show to the kids there are other ways to use your powers than fighting bas guys, the living example for Paula’s point.

Coming To Terms With Tokyo Ghoul
*There are spoilers in the following text for those who have not kept up with the anime/manga*
It’s been about 4 years since the first season of Tokyo Ghoul premiered and I can’t say that I’m satisfied with where it has ended up thus far. In very few words, since the end of the first season, the show has taken a messy turn for the worst.
It’s been difficult to enjoy Tokyo Ghoul re: because of the technical missteps with regards to how the story is being handled. 4 seasons in, the art, for the most part, has remained the same, if not a tad darker. The soundtrack is just as good as it ever was, much of the music being carried over from earlier seasons as we still have Yutaka Yamada, composer from the first two seasons, handling the score. The problem I have with Tokyo Ghoul re: is the disconnect between these last two seasons and the first two. It may be useful to note that for Tokyo Ghoul:re, there has been a change in the director as well as the lead character designer. I’m not sure of how much this truly affects the show, but it clarifies some of the lack of continuity within the show and its struggles with crafting a fluid narrative from previous seasons to now. Like the change in director, the jump between Tokyo Ghoul and Root A to Tokyo Ghoul:re has been a drastic one.
These past two seasons of Tokyo Ghoul:re have not done a good job of making the anime progress logically for those not immersed in the manga. The beginnings of Tokyo Ghouls:re feel like a totally new show altogether, even though it is meant to be a continuation of the events that ended vaguely with Tokyo Ghoul Root A. I’ll acknowledge that this idea of starting anew could have been interesting, considering we start with a Kaneki Ken who is living in his new identity as Sasaki Haise. Since Kaneki(Sasaki) is oblivious to his past, the show and its audience should be as well. The issue with this is that they unraveled and revealed too much in too short a time. The show never gave Kaneki nor the audience the proper rollout or time to process the new reality of its central character. The first few episodes of Tokyo Ghoul:re feel similar to they way Tokyo Ghoul transitioned into Tokyo Ghoul Root A.
To compare to the first season, what I appreciated so much about Tokyo Ghoul is how the 12 episodes take us on a winding path down Kaneki’s adjustment and rejection to life as a half-ghoul. It was heartbreaking and beautiful to watch him deny himself as an act of self-preservation and self-righteousness, just to abandon it all in the end to save himself, and subsequently those he cares about. To this day, episode 12 of the first season of Tokyo Ghoul is without a doubt of the highest quality in any anime to exist at the time. All the reaction videos and reviews of that episode alone provide evidence to that. It also ranks highly in my catalog of episodes and the last 5 minutes is one of my favorite sequences of all time. The emotions surrounding Kaneki and his upbringing and then the catharsis in Kaneki’s acceptance of Rize and the life of a ghoul. It all set up Kaneki’s further fall from humanity that would come in Tokyo Ghoul Root A. The transition to the second season was choppy at best. The second season did very little to transition the story and provide a way into understanding more of Kaneki’s decision to abandon his humanity, his friends, his morals that he held onto so tightly in the first season. We never got to join Kaneki is his descent to madness as he consumed other ghouls, we never get glimpses in his decision to throw away most of what he knows and abandon his new found family at Anteiku. We were forced to take the transformation as matter of fact, and this brings us back to Tokyo Ghoul:re Tokyo Ghoul:re suffers from the same lack of transition. Kaneki is a shadow of his former self and the same goes for how the show deals with his new realities as a member of the CCG and his struggles with his former self.
With Tokyo Ghoul:re we are given a new central cast that feels removed from the universe we were presented with in the first two seasons. We slowly learn that this new group surrounding Sasaki(Kaneki) is an experiment in trying to form an anti ghoul squad made up of artificial one-eyed ghouls like Sasaki(Kaneki). As the season progresses, we get glimpses into Sasaki’s identity struggles as he communicates with his former selves in his head in moments of need. His true self locked away only until he is on the verge of death. Most times he speaks to a childhood version of himself, but after a while, different versions of himself pop up, (the centipede aogiri tree Kaneki, the broken by Jason Kaneki, etc.) But they are only ever glimpses. Brief moments where he surrenders his identity as Sasaki to allow Kaneki to come forth and handle the situation at hand. These questions and struggles of identity I can only assume are never pretty or clear to understand, but the show never made it any easier on the audience. This also applies to the larger plot elements that transpire as the season progresses. From Arima and the One-Eyed Owl’s plot to have Kaneki become the next one-eyed king, the Washuu Clan’s ultimate desire to take over the CCG and rule Japan as ghouls, to the conspiracy surrounding the doctor behind Kaneki’s beginnings as a one-eyed ghoul. The way the show presents the story is like they expect the audience to have some prior knowledge of all the events. It feels like they approached these two seasons of Tokyo Ghoul:re with the assumption that the audience has been keeping up with the manga between the end of Root A and :re and are aware of everything that is going on.
This is where my biggest gripes with the latest seasons come from. The story feels choppy, jumping from one event to the next without explaining anything in between. The show is all over the place, and nothing feels like it’s important or should be cared about. The erratic pace of the show struggled to establish any sort of hierarchy in the events and reduces the potency of anything that happens. These two seasons of Tokyo Ghoul:re have done very little to make the audience care about Kaneki and his rekindled relationships with those he forgot, particularly Touka and Hide, who was thought to be dead, in his absence while assuming the identity of Sasaki Haise. There is no consequence when Kaneki decides to leave the CCG to form and head the Ghoul organization GOAT. The gravity in the change of power at the CCG when Arima kills himself is nowhere to be found. If any word comes to mind, it’s nonchalant. A nonchalance towards the characters and their feelings, a nonchalance towards the power struggle that is happening between the humans and the ghouls, the nonchalance of how lives have been dealt with over the last 23 episodes. The characters they’ve kept from the first two seasons are hardly recognizable. it’s frustrating that the quinx squad, the four newest characters to the show have had the most development, at times overshadowing, Kaneki, the most nonchalant of them all.
In all, I wish they had taken their time. Taken their time to let the events flow into one another. Taken their time to allow characters to process the tumultuous events. Taken the time to explain the situations so the audience can care about it all. Taken the time to carefully think through the jumps in time. At this point I’m committed to the train wreck that is Tokyo Ghoul:re and with the final episode a few days away, I don’t expect much. I just wish I could have enjoyed the journey a little more.

Episode 1, act 1
‘On November 1st it will be ten years since the doors of Arcadia closed on Its sons and daughters. This exposed us to the world, causing your Mad President to demand a ‘Second Inquisition,’ calling on all other leaders to hunt and kill our people.’
Sheila paused her typing there, leaning back in her chair to consider that last word. Was ‘people’ the right word to use to describe a race of beings so diverse? Tabbing over to a browser, she looked up the definition.
PEOPLE (noun) 1. Human beings in general or considered collectively.
A heavy thump of fingers sent the cursor back to her letter. It blinked there accusingly, slowly winking in and out of existence. She put her palms against her eyes, rubbing until stars appeared. A migraine was coming on, the kind that started in the back and violently plowed through anything productive she worked on. She dug her fingers under the base of her horns, right where they began at her temples, then tugged down on the curved parts. It relieved some pressure; she turned her attention back to the chore of picking the correct noun.
It was always dangerous to compare the Fae to humans, particularly where humans were concerned. The word ‘Fae’ itself was a catch-all they used to describe anything they didn’t understand these days. Sheila wasn’t herself technically of the Fae races, but that didn’t prevent satyrs from being lumped in with the rest. Most of her species, and many of the less magical beings, considered themselves to be ‘Folk.’ That might work… she looked up the definition.
FOLK (noun) 1. People in general.
Sheila sighed at the computer screen, decided that it would all come out in editing, and continued with her letter.
‘It wasn’t until years later that the madman was removed from office, and it was many more before the war waged on us eased. Even though the war is technically over we are still treated as less than. Violence is committed against the Fae on a daily basis, but nothing is being done about it. We’ve been in your world for as long as humans have, living alongside you without incident. Why does knowing we exist change things so drastically? We are still the same people you worked next to, lived near, laughed with… I’m asking for your help, Senator, to end the persecution of my…’
Hiking up her skirt slightly while waffling back and forth between ‘community’ and ‘race,’ she leaned down to scratch the fur above her left hoof. Leaning forward a bit, she also checked to make sure her polish wasn’t scuffed. A glance cast over her shoulder proved Karen was staring at her leg. The older woman’s face was caught somewhere between curiosity and distaste, which rapidly became embarrassment when Sheila snapped her skirt down curtly.
While her human coworkers had gotten mostly used to her horns and long ears, they rarely caught glimpses of legs covered in fur. Long skirts in layers of subdued fabrics hid anything too distracting from curious eyes. It was always better to let them wonder what might be under there than to endure the barely veiled discomfort of a human dealing with strangeness.
With a brief smile on Sheila’s part, Karen was let off the hook. The rictus curve of her lips relaxed immediately, breaking into a telling smile. It was an over compensating mask stretched nearly to breaking across her face. It was the defensive smile of a human caught being possibly offensive. Well, for the ones that cared about such things.
“Oh,” the woman said, startling herself out of the attempt to make her face look ‘natural,’ “Your father is on line two.”
Sheila nodded her thanks, then tugged down on her horns again, trying to ease the ache between her ears. After a few deep breaths, and a countdown backwards from seven, she picked up the handset.
“This is Sheila,” she said, mustering up her best professional voice. Human/Fae relations had taught her a lot about having a ‘business voice,’ but with her father, it rarely lasted long.
“I know who you are,” his voice in return was cool, bland, tearing into his daughter’s attempts to be professional, “and you know better than to keep me waiting. You know I’m busy.”
Sheila cast an accusatory glance at Karen, who was finding anywhere else to look. “I just got off a call,” Sheila lied, knowing full well she probably wouldn’t have picked up any sooner regardless.
“Right.”
After muting the phone to take a deep breath, she bravely asked, “May I know what you are calling for, sir?”
“Your brother will be in Colorado tomorrow. I will forward you his itinerary, I expect you to offer him full assistance, as well as hospitality, until he departs.”
It wasn’t her brother Simon that she had a problem with. It was her father’s way of demanding things from her that irked her.
“I’m busy tomorrow. I’m sure he can handle himself for a few hours.”
“You are a Whitehart,” he stated, his voice still cool, though behind it came the power of an unspoken invocation, “So you will do your duty to this family. I do not have to ask… or must you be reminded?”
“You haven’t actually asked yet,” she retorted, calm torn apart by the ragged edges of family duty, “but no, you don’t have to force me.”
“As long as you do your part, you will continue to receive my financial support…” he continued, but his daughter was no longer listening.
Instead, she watched her best friend walk towards her, a welcome breath of fresh air named Gaspar. Skirt swishing, chin held high, he was the very image of the ‘Action Transvestite’ he claimed to be. Light on the make-up today, true, but the pleated skirt paired with the business top made the Look. Without a word he sat on the edge of her desk, fingers folded like the noblest of ladies across his lap.
“Did you hear what I said, Sheila?” Her father only raised his voice like that occasionally. Mostly, her mother had once explained, at his only daughter.
“Yes, Father,” she responded, rolling her eyes at Gaspar. He clucked sympathetically, most of his attention on staring down Karen. Oil and water didn’t work as a good comparison for the two nearly as well as ice and a hot frying pan did.
“Good. Since I have no further business for you, I’ll let you get back to your…” he paused, perhaps to allow his contempt to gather in the final word, “Work.” Sheila’s face reddened, lips pressing together tightly.
“Love you, Father,” she said coolly, savoring the silence the words created before he disconnected. Her lips had gone numb in the process, and an exhalation from Gaspar made her smile softly.
“Oh. My. God. Sheila!” he said, eyes wide, knowing what the words meant to her family, “You know, someday you’re going to mean it when you say it… THEN what will happen, hmm?”
“He’s in no danger of that happening, trust me,” came the reply, her handset slapping back into place as a punctuation.
“Savage! Girl, I just can’t even with you today,” Gaspar’s eyes reflected the delight he felt. He loved a good scandal. Pulling his sleeve up, he exposed a new watch to his redheaded friend. She knew he collected watches, so offered him a smile of approval.
“Oh, you got it!” she said, pulling it closer to admire the Invicta he was sporting. He’d been watching the price on this particular toy for a while. The only thing he loved more than clothes, watches and make-up was a bargain. He’d lectured many times that paying full price for something was admitting defeat.
“No,” he scoffed, then corrected, “Well, yes, I did, but what I’m showing you, silly goat, is the time.” He was the only person in the world she allowed to call her anything related to her ‘animal’ bits… he had earned the right, “It’s time for you to shed your Mormon clothes! It’s time for bailando!” He slid off the desk, extending a hand towards Sheila like they were about salsa right there in the cubicles.
A soft cough from Karen brought both of their gazes to her. Once again, the satyr wondered if there were any baby Karens, or if they just materialized fully grown one day asking the boss about overtime. She was studiously ignoring them, but a pile of folders had conveniently gotten closer to the edge of her desk.
Gaspar took up the gauntlet, “Oh, hey, you can come with, boo!” When she looked up, he was right next to her desk grinning mischievously, holding out his hand. Without a word, Karen stood up to march into the breakroom.
Quickly, Sheila saved her work before following her friend out the door.
The air was crisp, but not too cold, as autumn should be. Pumpkin spice had invaded everything, edible or not, and you couldn’t toss a black cat without hitting a Halloween store. It was Sheila’s favorite time of the year. Even though he griped about the chill, Gaspar let her roll her window down so she could savor it.
“Did you dress up when you were a kid?” Gaspar asked, pointing the car in the general direction of her apartment with his usual disdain for road etiquette. He casually flicked his middle finger at someone honking at him, not even bothering to look in their direction.
“For Halloween?” she clarified, easing her grip on the oh-shit handle above the window, but leaving her hoof braced against his dashboard just in case. “Yeah, we all did. Samhain is a middle place, so people could see us. We could be ourselves without fear.” Her flamboyant friend had learned the previous year about what the Folk called the ‘twixt,’ which were things and times between. That was when the Fae had the most power.
“Oh, that would have been lovely,” he sighed, hand flat on his chest, looking at her wistfully. “A boy in a dress was never allowed. ‘Oh, no, Gaspy, you can’t be Joan of Arc! Why can’t you just be a regular knight?’”
Sheila chortled softly, “You sound nothing like her,” she teased.
“Thank god. I’d have to rip out my own vocal cords if I ever developed her eardrum-piercing cawing.” The way he deadpanned his threat evoked a laugh from the satyr, though she quickly stifled the sound. Gaspar sighed. “You know, holding all that in is going to kill you.”
“My therapist says my stress levels are manageable,” she quipped back defensively. They both know she didn’t have a therapist. They encouraged openness, feelings… dangerous things for a Whitehart.
“You know what I mean, silly goat,” he said, watching her face while simultaneously causing three different cars to blare their horns at him. She did indeed, so fell silent until they pulled up in front of her apartment.
Years ago, fire had torn apart the area of Colorado Springs called ‘Mountain Shadow.’ It was the tip of the burn scar on the side of the mountain, and even a decade and a half later it was still healing. Like the saplings that had pushed their way through the ash to start their new life, the Folk had taken up residence in the area. Sheila lived in a gated apartment complex in the area, her room looking up at the healing hillside. She paid more for it, but it spoke to the nature spirit in her. After destruction there was new, often stronger, life. It gave her hope that the Fae could grow strong after their own calamity.
Gaspar hummed to himself on the porch swing, wafting clouds of cotton candy vapor from his favorite brand of cancer-stick. Sitting out there served two purposes: a nicotine fix, and it let him ignore the inside of her apartment. He had come to terms with the fact that the big pile of clothes opposite her bed was dirty, the clean ones were hung with care on an exercise machine, and it might take a week or more before her dishes made their way to the kitchen. Even though it drove his OCD ‘itchy with madness,’ he’d promised not to try to straighten up anymore.
The satyr stood looking at herself in a full-length mirror, one that was tacked to the wall without a frame. She ran her fingertips over the bareness of her thighs, checking the state of the wax job she’d gotten the Sunday before. They called it a ‘greek,’ and it removed all her fur from her navel to the middle of her thighs, giving the image of thigh-high stockings made of red fur. She decided it was still clean enough, though she frowned at the state of her tail. After hours trapped under a skirt, it looked more like bunny fluff than it did goat fur. She fussed at it with a brush, then gave up.
Her hair, not happy with having been bound back all day, let its opinion be known by frizzing out as much as possible. It was quite upset, she was sure, because she had not only tried out a new conditioner, but had dyed it a darker shade of red. Her usual color was closer to orange (Gaspar tried to help by calling it ‘coppery’), and her roots had been ‘hot.’ No matter how she tried, it wouldn’t form into the desired ringlets of luscious red. Instead it looked, in her opinion, like something found at the bottom of a basket of red yarn. Giving up, her hair found itself bound tightly backwards before being slathered with leave in conditioner to weigh it down. Hair and tail would just have to stay upset.
“Your clothing allergy has gotten out of hand,” Gaspar patted her bottom as he walked by, then sat daintily on the edge of her bed. While he was entirely comfortable with her naked bits, he still gave her ever-growing laundry pile a look of horror. “Okay, so, if I paid for a maid… hazard pay, to be sure… would you even let them in here?”
Sheila did not look up from where she was sorting her clean dresses. “You know I can’t let someone in here unbound, Gaz.” She turned with a dress held up in front of her. It was short, perhaps too short, and red… perhaps too red. Her friend was looking at the wall near the head of her bed instead of the dress. On it was a painting of a door, covered in symbols, with a quite-real handle sticking out of it. Above the door was a quote:
‘I have trod the upward and the downward slope; I have endured and done in days before; I have longed for all, and bid farewell to hope; And I have lived and loved, and closed the door.’
The quote had nothing to do with the operation of the door; Sheila just liked Stevenson.
“Sometimes,” Gaspar said quietly, sitting with a straight back, his knees folded, “I try to remember life before the Fae. I think that maybe I knew what I was seeing, you know, before?” he paused, adjusting the hem of his skirt, “I feel I’ve always know them… you.” He offered her a smile, then motioned towards the portal with a delicate lift of his fingers, “Who knows, maybe I’ve seen a door like this in Manitou, and I was like… tra la la, yay, a painting?”
The two were bound together by a ritual, but there were still things she couldn’t tell him. The trods, how they worked, their locations; all of these things would put his life in danger. He was only allowed to know of this one because a quick splash of water would blend the colors, rendering it impotent.
“So,” she changed the subject, “does this say, ‘momma wants her bun honeyed?”
He knew what she was doing, but after a quick sigh, he came back with, “It says that, as well as, ‘just leave the money on the dresser.’”
“Sex, and some coffee money?” she sat next to him, pulling the dress up over her hooves, “Sounds like a win-win to me!”
“As long as you’re okay with 7-11 coffee, hooker,” he said, turning his usual sly smile away from her. She knew she wouldn’t be winning this round of snark.
She stood up, turning her back to him so he could fit her tail through the button hole in the back of the dress. While she made the proper adjustments to her cleavage, he stood to lace golden strands around her horns. They were bargain-bin necklaces repurposed, but they went with the earrings she wore. While some of her cousins would pierce the full length of their long, conical ears, she liked to keep things simple. After Gaspar fixed her make-up, and she added a bit of shine on her hooves, they were ready to go.
Normally, they would have gone to a bar in Manitou, a nearby town that accepted the Folk. Most of the residents were either Fae or their biggest fans. Instead, they were heading to the Castle, downtown. It was a meat market club, with heavier music, more expensive drinks, and hookups far cheaper. Tonight was a ‘Faery Mixer’, a marketing ploy to get humans into the club. Let the strange and delightful drink free so you can over-charge the humans who want to touch them.
They made it from the parking garage without any of the usual stupidity. Sheila was quite happy with the wolf whistle received from a passing car. Usually, it was someone shouting some speciest bullshit. Sexism was far easier to tolerate, particularly when she was feeling sexy. Once within the building, she settled Gaspar into a corner booth before going to get their drinks.
“Hey, satyr baby,” said a younger man, sliding a bit too close to her at the bar.
She sighed, ears twitching, then replied, “I’m a faun.” When he leaned in closer, turning his head towards her to hear over the music, she repeated: “I. am. a faun.” He seemed confused by the correction, so she turned to collect the drinks from the bartender.
“You look like a satyr,” he replied, following her close through the crowd. She swayed through the dancers and minglers expertly, an artform developed by years of waitressing. It was how she’d paid for college, after all. She didn’t reply until she had the drinks set in front of Gaspar. Adjusting her dress, she turned to lean towards her inebriated shadow.
“I’m a faun, not a satyr,” she lied. It was a common mistake that humans made, confusing the two species. “Satyrs are feral party animals,” she continued, leaving out the bad parts: the misogyny of her male counterparts, who were lauded for centuries for molesting nymphs and human women alike.
“So, what the fuck is a faun?” he asked, looking her up and down in disbelief.
“Like a satyr, but not as…” she paused, almost saying ‘rapey,’ “Easy. I’m sure if I wasn’t a faun I’d be all about being called ‘satyr baby.’ I’m not, though, so… go away, ‘kay?” Gaspar leaned up, making a shooing motion towards the man.
“Time to g’wan, boyo,” he said, managing to look both glamorous and intimidating.
“I was just being friendly, freak,” the young man stepped back a bit, raising his voice, “You think I, what, wanted some fucking beast like you?” Humans were oddly attracted to the Fae, particularly the ones put together by lusty gods. Resist their overtures and attraction turned to anger quickly. Fae were less than human, not good enough, just monsters.
Sheila had dealt with it many times before, but her Gaspar never handled it well. Sliding into the booth next to him, she covered his hand with hers, shaking her head.
Finding himself being stared at, without any further responses from the ‘faun’ to fire him up, the young man walked away.
“His prick is as small as his mind,” Gaspar quipped, testing the flavor of his grasshopper.
“How do you drink those?” Sheila asked, wrinkling her nose in pretend disgust. She preferred a good IPA over ‘girly’ drinks.
“Because I want a drink that doesn’t taste like Stockholm syndrome?” he responded, spinning the ice in his glass. Sheila chuckled softly; they’d disagreed about this for a long time. She preferred heartier flavors. Maybe it was the influence of Dionysus, but it didn’t matter, she liked beer.
“Oh, don’t look, but someone’s peeping!” Of course, she immediately turned to look, causing her friend to sigh in exasperation, “I said DON’T look!”
The peeper in question was handsome enough, dancing with a pair of women. Friends, if the way they moved was any clue. He had dark hair, coupled with light eyes. She did like a nice light eye. She liked the way his clothes fit him even more, even though they weren’t expensive. He seemed… comfortable. Sure to Gaspar’s word, his eyes spent more time on their booth than on the dance floor.
“You positive he’s not looking at you?” She asked, watching the man dance.
“Oh, I wish he was,” came the reply, “I would climb that mountain and plant my flag in his textured crop top… but he is so horridly straight.” She looked at her friend, who immediately tapped the side of his nose, “Gaydar says ‘no fly zone, possibly with anti-gaycraft in his back pockets.”
Sheila counted her blessings once again that Gaspar was in her life. Without him, she wouldn’t have been able to get a moment’s peace in a packed club. Folk only numbered close to five percent of the human population. Most humans claimed to either know a Fae, or to have a friend who knew one personally. Still, they were rare enough for people to be curious, and now that the war was over, more were willing to chance an encounter.
“Go” Gaspar nudged her by sliding his butt against hers. “If he’s odious, give me the sign, girl.”
After a last swig of beer for courage, and some fussing with the length of the skirt (a sudden wish that it was longer), she started toward the trio. She was used to being the one to start up a conversation, particularly since most who came to her were like ‘satyr baby’ from earlier. The man smiled at her as she got closer, as did his companions.
Normally, Sheila felt very predatory trying to find a partner in a club. Deny it as she might, she had satyr blood. It meant that there was passion inside her that needed to come out. Where better than with nameless targets in a meat market like this one? Sex could happen, and usually did, but it wasn’t necessarily the desired outcome. A happy side effect, maybe. It made her feel like she was prowling, devouring hapless dancers to make herself feel better.
When the man placed his fingertips gently against her arm, leaning down slightly to introduce himself, Sheila felt a kindred spirit.
“Greg,” he said, his voice rich, his mouth close enough to entice, but without touching the sensitive hairs on her ear. A whiff of store bought musk brushed her nose, barely hiding the more pleasant copper and salt smell of his skin.
“Sheila,” she responded, and that was all it took. They were dancing. The girls he was with didn’t introduce themselves, but neither did they leave. Instead, they closed the distance, stepping inside of each other’s personal bubbles. Other than that first touch, Greg kept his hands to himself. His friends, however, did all the touching for him. The satyr didn’t mind, not in the least. They were all here for the same thing. With a group like this, she didn’t have to worry about what might happen. It allowed her to relax and release the energy she needed to.
Soon, she found herself closing the distance on Greg. It started with little touches: fingertips and hips, but as the music grew heavier, so too did her movements. The club was her temple to Bacchus. Dancing was her religion, and her god demanded ecstasy. She had never in her life uttered a word of prayer to the creator of her race, but every time she set hoof to dance floor his presence was keenly felt.
Her heart pounded in her ears as she ground against him, rhythm dictating their movements, heavy bass matching the beat in her chest. He was turned on, she could tell, but he wasn’t hers quite yet. She didn’t want him to want her. She wanted him to need her. She squatted in front of him, still moving to the beat, but placing her face close enough to his jeans to get her point across.
Hands on her horns dragged her backwards away from Greg, turning her as she slid to her knees. The young man from before met her angry eyes with madness of his own. Holding her horns didn’t hurt as much as her hair might have, but to her it was twice as humiliating.
“I’m not good enough to talk to, freak?” he shouted over the music, the ambient noise in the club lowering as people stopped dancing to stare. “But you can dance with this… this... faggot?” The floor was too smooth for her to get her hooves placed well, not with his yanking her head about. Greg and his friends tried to help, but the young man had friends of his own. Even with the press of the crowd growing worse as people jockeyed to see her predicament, she could still make out the boy’s friends pushing her support away. Words shouted, hostilities rising, and all Sheila could do was flounder.
“I’ve got you figured out,” he mocked. “I just needed to get a ‘handle’ on you!” He laughed at his own joke, then dragged her head towards his crotch, “Fucking blow me, beast!”
A hoof finally setting itself right was all she needed to drive herself forward, so that’s what she did. One curved horn landed with a satisfying crunch into his junk, making him scream. He didn’t let her go, so she rammed him once more. Trying to twist her head caused him more damage, so he finally let go. Freed, fueled by the rage of being so violated, she came up swinging, but failed to connect. A hand wrapped around her waist, pulling her back, a familiar voice calming her slightly.
“Woah, woah,” Greg shouted, pulling her backwards, “I think he gets it.” The young man’s friends rushed to his aid, glaring at the satyr as if she was the problem. She could hear Gaspar calling to her, trying to reach her through the crowd.
“You fucking freak!” the man shouted from the floor, both hands gripping between his legs, his voice cracking with pain. “I’ll fucking kill you! I’ll mount your damn horns on my wall!”
She lashed a hoof out towards him, but he was too far for her to land the blow. Greg held her tight, speaking calmly to her, and she let that ease her anger. Shock came as adrenaline ebbed. She had struck a human. The camera lights aimed at her, the eyes of those around her, they all reminded her of just how sub human she truly was.
A dog had just bitten the mailman, and the best the bitch could hope for was being caged.
