January 24 2024 Scam Alert:
There's a new phishing email making the rounds that looks like an authentic message from Google, warning you that unless you take action your Gmail account will be closed and all your messages deleted. All you have to do is click the link to confirm or deny the action.
It is, of course, fake. It collects your password "for verification" then hijacks your account.
Don't click any link in an email no matter how official it looks. Instead, go to your Gmail dashboard directly. If there is indeed any risk Google wants to delete your account, you'll be notified there.

So google added an AI chatbot icon to all their products. You can simply refrain from using it and can turn off tracking activity in the privacy settings, easy enough, but the stupid icon will still mock you

Senator Cory Booker nears 24 hour filibuster against Trump agenda
Senator Booker, New Jersey, promised to stand on the senate floor as long as he is ““physically able.” According to CNN Booker now holds the record of 2nd longest speech on the Senate floor. Booker’s protest reflects constituent’s pressure to combat the Trump administration. Booker’s filibuster is symbolic as it is not delaying a specific piece of legislation, but the administration as a whole. A normal filibuster is when a politician holds up the process by speaking on the Senate floor, filibuster can last as long as the speaker wishes, however they are not allowed to leave the senate floor. Another way is for the Senate to vote a ⅔ majority to end the filibuster, called ‘cloture.’ CNN highlights that Booker “warned in his remarks that the “country is in crisis” as he railed against a wide-range of issues, from castigating Elon Musk’s efforts to overhaul the federal government under Trump to warning of potential cuts to key health care programs for millions of Americans… In just 71 days, the president of the United States has inflicted so much harm on Americans’ safety; financial stability; the core foundations of our democracy. These are not normal times in America. And they should not be treated as such in the United States Senate.”

National Security Advisor used personal Gmail accounts to share official communications
National Security Adviser Michael Waltz and other members of the Trump administration’s national security team used personal gmail accounts for government communications. This comes after Waltz added the Atlantic editor to a Signal group chat to discuss military tactics and confidential information. Independent states that the emails sent “ included sensitive military positions and weapons systems in connection with an ongoing conflict, …..  [and] his schedule and other work documents” Experts claim that “foreign intelligence services place a high value on the communications and schedules of top officials.” Trump backed Waltz after the ‘Signalgate’ controversy, however sources say “[Trump] reportedly met with Vice President JD Vance and Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, as well as others, to discuss whether or not to keep the national security adviser in his post.

Bad Google behavior of the day:
I search my Gmail account for the word "Biolage" (it's a shampoo, and I want to see if I can figure out how long ago I got the bottle in the cabinet). Gmail returns 4 results using the term "Biolage", and also many hundreds of emails I have sent or received containing the word "matrix." Because the shampoo is manufactured by a company called "Matrix".
Matrix is a word more-commonly-used in other contexts; and a person searching their own email for Product Name is probably not going to also want results for Parent Corporation Name, even in situations in which that name is NOT a moderately-common fucking noun. But Google doesn't care, because Matrix buys ads from them and presumably pays them to link these terms together and such.
Anyway, you have to put terms in quotes to prevent Gmail from playing corporate word-association games intended to drive ad revenue in unrelated Google products.
