On February 28, 2024, I, in part with the Bowie State Gospel Choir, attended the Gospel Music Workshop of America’s 2024 Collegiate Night  in Norfolk, VA. The experience is one I will truly never forget. The event started with a rehearsal comprising all five choirs in attendance for the night, in which we learned five songs, including the GMWA’s “anthem”, “We Are On Our Way” by James Cleveland and “Hold On” by Ricky Dillard (both of which quickly becoming two of my new favorite songs very quickly). The other choirs in attendance were the Norfolk State University Choir, Norfolk State Gospel Choir, and Ebony Impact (Old Dominion University). Coming together with the other choirs prior to the BSU choir’s performance was really special, and watching how we all worked and blended together so well was amazing. The actual event began at 7 pm, starting off with Praise and Worship by alums who were part of GMWA from a plethora of universities, including Norfolk State and Old Dominion. Following this were uplifting and beautiful selections performed by the Norfolk State University Choir, Norfolk State Gospel Choir, and Ebony Impact (Old Dominion University), ranging from classical gospel selections to hits by famed renowned gospel music artist Hezekiah Walker. The night ended on a high with the combined choirs performing “We Are On Our Way” (James Cleveland), “Hold On” (Ricky Dillard), “Jerusalem” (James Cleveland), “Jesus Lifted Me”(Robert Fryson) and “Let Everything That Has Breath” (Malcolm Williams).
Overall, the experience was amazing. The collegiate night was a really amazing opportunity to not only participate in but to witness the amazing talents of fellow young people who are both in college and love God. It felt like I was right at home watching every choir’s performance. Each group brought something different to the table, whether that was genre, pace, or message of the songs they sang, that spoke to my heart and opened my eyes in a new way. The various types of art forms discussed in class each have elements that make them stand out from the rest. Expressionism has more focus on exaggeration and hyperbole of emotions, while afrofuturism focuses more on elements of Black culture and the African diaspora. In the same way, each choir really brought varying elements that made the night really special. The concert choir performed more classical, acapella gospel that made you feel like you were at Heaven’s gate with how beautiful the harmonies of the choir blended. Ebony Impact brought a nostalgic yet praise-break-worthy performance of a Hezekiah Walker medley, including songs like Power Belongs to God and How Much We Can Bear (classics I’ve been singing since I was about 5). I felt something shift that night. I feel that the power of music was most evident in that room. On top of that, it was so refreshing to be around Christian people my age with a passion for singing. We all have our different stories, our different paths, our different reasons for ending up where we are, but Collegiate Night gave an opportunity for us all to come together for one common goal of singing for God, and making us united in a way I couldn’t have even imagined.

Kimberly Jean Burrell (August 26, 1972) is a gospel singer, songwriter, and pastor from Houston.
Born in Houston, she was one of four children born to Julius Burrell Jr., a pastor, and Helen Ruth Graham, an evangelist singer in The Church of God in Christ. As a youth, she began performing with Reverend James Cleveland’s GMWA Youth Mass.
Her performances continued with the Trinity Temple Full Gospel Mass Choir of Dallas and The Inspirational Sounds Mass Choir of Houston. She was a featured singer on the reprise of “Jesus Paid It All” on Ricky Dillard & New G’s album Worked It Out. Her first independent album, Try Me Again, was released on the Texas-based boutique label Pearl Records in 1995. This led to her being signed to Tommy Boy Gospel and releasing another album, Everlasting Life. The album peaked at #10 on the Billboard Gospel Charts. She recorded Live In Concert at the annual COGIC Holy Convocation. It was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Soul Gospel Album. She signed a recording contract with Elektra Records. Under this contract, she recorded only a guest appearance on the all-star gospel track “Higher Ground”, which first appeared as a bonus track, Miss E... So Addictive and was featured on Karen Clark Sheard’s 2nd Chance album. She continues to perform live and collaborate with other artists. She established and hosts the annual Ephesians 4 conference, a workshop for performing artists.
She was a guest performer on “3-Way Phone Call”. She appeared in “Mathematics of Love”. She released her first studio album in 11 years, No Ways Tired. The album features covers of classic gospel songs like “My Faith Looks Up To Thee,” “What A Friend We Have In Jesus,” “O Lamb Of God” and “I Surrender All”. She sang “I See a Victory” with Pharrell Williams for the soundtrack to Hidden Figures. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Is Disney Channel doing ok ?
《 Prom Pact 》
Eh... are we sure this is a Dcom ? In what planet is r-14 a rating for mentioning sex ON DISNEY.
Idk why i got so hung up on that, ive seen other recent projects with this gen of Disney stars having crude language and i was fine. There's just smth so weird about it being branded as a Disney movie. I kinda felt ashamed, u know. Like how are u going to put this movie and teenbeach in the same category...
As for my enjoyment overall, this was such a Rollercoaster: 4 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 6 - 4 - 2 - 4 - 5 - 4
So over all... 4.5/10 ?
It's not a good movie, but it's not disney channels' worse either. It's just... not Disney like. It's more like netflix for teens.
I think my favorite thing was that they really portrayed the friendship well. It was purely platonic and left no room for me to even see romantic potential. And that's hard to do when Milo is the one playing the bestie. Anyone would fall for his charm.
But the romance still felt really superficial, it never really felt deep to the point where halfway in, i still wasnt sure if they intended us to ship the besties together. Cuse thats the trope u know. So i guess they made a good decision subverting clichés but not that good of an execustion.
I did love the proposal at the end. It was well set up. But meh... those types of movies aren't really for me.
I won't rewatch or even remember it.
Also, the start was so unbearable that i had to watch in 2x speed. It's so... performative. I know we love quirky Mcs but like... dial down a little. I could have related with her sooooo much more if she was a little more chill about it. Cuse, she has so many fair points, and that's exactly how i thoight in high school. I skipped my prom too, so it was nice to see her ask her bestie out to prom to value the experience he wanted to have. As she connects with her love interest, she does become more chill and relatable, so i didn't hate her in the end. But at the start, i couldn't stand her.
OMG i loved the scene where the love intrest taught her a little basketball, it was well done.
Overall, i was confused cuse it wasnt what i was expecting, i got anoyed cuse it really felt like 2019 disney channel where all the caracthers are performative, and then i gmwas pleasently suprised cuse the romance wasnt that bad, they did a good job subverting expectation for that "prom" trope. But meh, Disney can do better with romance and we've seen them do it well.

But fr
What is disney channel up to these days ? Did they fire all the 2016 writers ?
