online buddy of mine (born in 2004) said “i strongly suspect the vast majority of ‘I'll always remember where I was on 9/11’ stories are not true. I simply don't believe that 75% of people were watching the news live at 8:45 in the morning on a Tuesday when the strangest thing happened.” and like. okay. we can talk about the aftermath in the 22 years since 9/11 and the horrific and evil jingoism that ruined countless lives in decades-long wars all we want. but i cannot overstate enough that 1) we still very much had a monoculture in 2001. most americans would watch either the today show or GMA. 2) as soon as that first plane hit every news station in the country was covering it. schools and businesses and break rooms turned on every tv. every radio. anything that had the ability to broadcast the news. (smartphones weren’t a thing. cell phones and the internet existed but they were new and fragile. unreliable. your best bet was still to sit there and watch. or listen.) and we all sat there and watched the second plane hit and the pentagon hit and the towers collapse and flight 93. so, yes: basically everyone who was alive and old enough to form lasting memories in 2001 remembers that day and the coverage. even people who weren’t near a tv or radio in real time remember where they were and what they were doing when they heard the news. they probably even remember the reason why they didn’t hear about it in real time. i was 5 years old in my first week of first grade and i remember it. it was like. the biggest thing to happen in this country since fucking. pearl harbor. bigger. there’s no need to downplay that.
#personally: my school intentionally kept us in the dark and didn’t dismiss us so i didn’t find out until i got home#but we all knew something was up because it was a glorious september tuesday and they cancelled recess to keep us inside#and all of the teachers looked shaken and some kids were picked up by their parents.#i still remember the look on the face of the mom of one of my classmates. we would later find out that her dad (my friend’s grandpa) died.#but they didn’t tell us what was going on and i think they made the right choice.#didn’t want to traumatize thousands children more than necessary. i think they were right.#i still remember exactly where i was and how my parents told us though#and i remember all of the coverage after. all of it.

warnings: 18+, minors dni, unprotected sex [be safe!], cumming inside
[17:14] "Babe, why don't we play a game?" Mingyu randomly proposes. "Is this another gma about clinginess you found online?" you chuckle, seeing his lips turning into a line. "Got me" he admits, "you get stuff like that so easily, it's not fair". Both of yours love language is physical touchand you usually wouldn't care about showing it as much as you can and desire. And that would continue as much as you could, even publically, nothing would stop you. So Jeonghan being the menace he is, suggested that you two play those fun games to strengthen your relationship. In all honesty it was hard yet fun, You both struggled to keep your hands to yourselves.
"So what version of the game are we gonna play today?" leaning your side towards the counter of your kitchen you were both into at that time. "So the rules are simple. You touch or kiss, you lose a piece of clothing" he says smirking, "I'm so gonna win this time" you scoff at him, knowning that's more likely to lose and then ask "and what happens to the person that gets naked first". Another smirk appears on his face as he can't hide his excitement, "that's simple, they give oral to the other person"
"Deal!" you say "let's see how long you'll last baby… You're already wearing less clothers than what I'm wearing anyway" and then he looks at himself. A white comfy tank top and gray sweats and some home slippers. He doesn't react much already knowning how he'll end up. "Then are you ready?" he says suddenly getting closer, bicep flexing as he also leans towards the counter as well, putting his weight on that hand. Your hand moves ready to trace the muscle as you always do, stopping midway as you remember the game. He's smiling, a face full of joy as he sees you visibly struggle, "we just started baby, you';'re finding hard it seems" he says. "You wish" you say and go to your laptop to search for new series to watch.
"Leaving that early?" he says very close to your ear. "You might be missing a really good chance of getting head darling, I thought you really wanted that" he whispers and you can clearly hear the smirk he has on his face. "You already said I'll lose the game, so come back and let me lose in peace" he says and turns back into the place he was before. He sits down and taps on the place in front of himas you turn around. You sit down thinking of a way to win. Before you have a chance to actually think what to do, he places his arms in front of his legs, his face coming closer to yours as he flexes his muscles.
This time you can't help yourself and touch his forearm and when he smiles you come back to your senses and pull yourself back. "Doesn't seem like it'll be as easy to win as you thought it would, right?" he says as you sign and take of your shirt, revealing the sport bra you wear at home. "Bra at home?" he says kinda dissapointed. "Told you I have more layers on than you do", you smile starting to do exactly the same pose as he did before, pushing the top of your body forward, creating a nice for him. He licks his lips, and a hand comes right at your side, stroking its way upwards.
"Eager, aren't we?" you say and he gives up "Fuck that game, let's go". He takes off his tank top and picks you up, leading you both to the bedroom. "Well, it seems like the game is over" you laugh, "Yeah, I honestly never thought we'd last even that much to be honest" as your back hits the matress.
Head in the crook of your neck, lips sucking and licking the spot there. His hand stroke your side until they reach your thigh, squeezing it. He really can't keep himself composed, eagerly taking off your bra. Big hand go arounf breasts, playing with them, thumbs circling your nipples. He makes eye contact as his mouth goes around one, tongue flipping it oh so nicely, it sends tingles down your spine. You can't take it anymore and try to touch yourself, he, however has other plans and pulls your hand above your head. "Let me take care of that" he says with a smirk
He hurriedly pulling your pants down along with your panties, pushing his knee towards your bare pussy. A moan leaves your mouth as your area touches his skin. You wish for nothing more that for his tender touch, the fire that ablazes in your chest when you are one, together as one piece, moving your bodies in harmony.
"Put it in… Or at least touch me, I know you're eager for it too" you say pointing at his precum-stained boxers. "I wouldn't want to wait another moment sweetie". He pulls his boxers down and his hard on, springs free, shiny from the precum and not being touched till that moment. He rubs his length along your folds and then softly pushes it in. His head drops back, a groan leaving his mouth, as he feels around him, that familiar but never not satisfying warmth around him. He starts picking up his pace, brows furrowed, as he pushes your legs closer to your chest, a moan with each thrust.
"Not gonna last that long you know" you matter softly, a moan leaving your mouth right afterwards. "I'm not going to as well " he says, hand stroking your stomach as it travels lower, flicking your clit. You bit your lower lip, head thrown back, as bliss overtakes your body, happy to be filled by him, touched my him. He doesn't take too long, the pulses from your pussy driving to the edge as well, filling you with his cum.
His back touches the mattress as well, trying to catch his breath, a smile on his face. His hand touches yours, turning his hand towards you, "you know... we should play more games like these".

was going to make myself go to the doctors' on friday but convinced myself i could wait another week
so now i'm planning on going on my gma's birthday? which feels weird. especially bc one of my concerns is that the symptoms which i haven't talked to anyone about could be related to one of the things that was killing her. maybe not. maybe just hormones or sth. but you know how online researching symptoms can be. and you can't know until you go to a doctor
it would also be a new doctor and bc of my situations everythings more complicated and stressful and awkward but
speaking of my gma's birthday this will be the first year where i don't talk with her on our birthday. and i can't stop crying everytime i think about it
so yeah been crying a lot lately

wtf, 2023.
-grandpa has a little fall friday morning, my parents take donuts and coffee over to support my gma while she decides if he needs to go to the hospital. he's a little wobbly so yes. find out he has a brain bleed from a fall a couple weeks ago where he did hit his head, and in the whirlwind that follows he is put in a medical coma and does not wake up. he does wait until only my grandma is in the room before passing (my mom was urging gma to go to the bathroom and she refused, so my mama said fine i'll go and show you it's safe). we'd discovered he had prostate cancer that spread to the rest of him last month, and he's been rapidly going downhill with dementia for the last 15 years, but thankfully he wasn't mean but instead a big kid. he had no idea who we were but was happy vibing.
-my toddler had several laughing fits at what was later revealed to be key times. he was belly laughing to tears at nothing. he only did that when my grandpa made silly faces at him-- he loved all the small children and babies and they adored him, even if neither party had any idea who the other was, lol. the consensus is that grandpa's angel was checking in on his great grandkids and doing what he loved.
-rotavirus started ravaging the household sunday night. i have never done so much laundry. missed the funeral yesterday because it hit husband, and if i spread this to my gma or any of the babies i'd never forgive myself.
-i'm actually okay emotionally, so fucking thankful he's whole again because the old pictures really drove home how Not There he was.
-the completionist (youtuber) that we've watched for over a decade and donated to his charity for dementia research and victims… hasn't donated a cent. still no resolution on that, but it's upsetting.
-the polymega console we ordered in early 2021 is going to ship????
-still sick so no thanksgiving visit to gma's and canceled on bff M coming over (first thanksgiving since divorcing her pos toxic ex)
-bff K has a boyfriend for the first time at 42, and he treats her like mr. mae treats me, and after having been her confidante for the past 4+ years as she tried online dating this is the only guy i think could be The One she ends up with. god knows she deserves it.
-i finally nailed the chex mix recipe 8)
-these homemade mashed potatoes are going to be better than the bob evan's brand, which i didn't think was possible because that's already perfection
-i got to drop off mini pb pies to the kids' friends (whose parents are kind of my friends too now woah), sent one home with gma, gave one to bff M (promised her the whole feast but at least she gets an entire pie to herself, no judgement), and still have a whole big one to dig into later
-tomorrow i get to go start on christmas shopping which is my FAVORITE eeeeee i love giving, the looks of joy on their FACES is GREAT
-tomorrow we put up the tree and it's gonna be a lil nutty with a toddler around again but it'll also be super fun
-i've got. so much erasermic new stuff saved in my phone tabs that once i have the chance to breathe it'll be THERE and i know how much joy they bring me, it's so heartening to have that waiting for me <3
i'm not as active as i want to be, barely at all tbh, but i will be eventually. things just gotta calm tf down.
who knows what 2024 is gonna bring?

More Super Klenk details come to light
Does Super Klenk still exist? Did Super Klenk ever exist? The tv show is so famously obscure that one could be forgiven for believing it was just a hoax. Running for 13 episodes at the turn of the millenium, Super Klenk followed the antics of a school teacher who has a secret life as a superhero. Broadcast on primetime Sunday evenings on GMA-7, each episode lasted 90 minutes, blending action, romance, and comedy. For a primetime show running on a major network there's precious little evidence online of it ever having existed. Only one very brief video clip is available, taken from a station promo, plus a tiny number of low resolution promotional photos.
It is, very likely, one of the most obscure and undocumented superhero tv shows ever. The series appeared to have not been reshown since its original broadcast, and for all anyone knows the master tapes may have been junked. But that doesn't mean that with a bit of digital sleuthing we cannot unearth some interesting details about the series. For example, a while back a study of television listings in newspapers revealed the original broadcast details, and the tantalising possibility that there may have been far more than just 13 episodes.
In this post we outline further sources of contemporaneous information.
The Manila Bulletin
We start with a low resolution scan of an article from the Manila Bulletin (see above.) The article is conveniently written in English, yet parts of the text are hard to decipher given the low quality of the image. The following is a transcript as best can be made out. Note: passages marked in colour denote text that is unclear or missing from the image.

Tired of your usual Sunday night viewing habits? Then look up in the sky. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? It's Super Klenk to the rescue!
Although you won't really see Super Klenk in the sky once you channel surf to GMA-7 tonight at 8 p.m., their newest situational comedy entitled "Super Klenk" premieres.
Produced by Philippine-broadcasting leader GMA Network Inc., the comical super series "Super Klenk" stars sexy Ara Mina, who plays a dual role. As a normal human being she is a grade school teacher and volunteer rescuer Charito for Rescue 711, while she turns into the high flying but still fumbling heroine whenever she's needed to save people in distress.
In her new role as a super heroine, silver screen goddess Ara Mina defies the stigma of a "TF" [titillating films] actress. According to her, she doesn't care if people including the press would criticize her the way they did when she took on a singing career. What is important to her is that she remains focused on entertaining the children who will watch her show. She also emphasized that her decision to do children's show is not an indication that she will veer away from doing sexy roles. Her latest film that is slated for a January, 2000 release entitled "Laro sa Baga" will still feature her in some steamy love scenes.
According to its director Mac Alejandre, the unusual title of the sit-com was spawned after its head writer Isko Salvador, aka Brod Pete, who also plays Doctor Cortal in the TV series, took a break from their brainstorming. The creative team formed solely for this show were thinking of the show's title at Amigos Restaraunt when Isko came back with the "Super Klenk" apparently is also the middle name of Ara Mina (it is pronounced in Germany the same way as the word clench is pronounced.)
"Super Klenk" is also unusual in its length. It is a one and a half-hour sit-com, which is not the norm for television. Director Mac has no reason for this except that it was the time given them by GMA 7's programming department. He find this challenging since he knows that he has to keep this one and a half-hour show interesting all the way.
"It is really hard to do a sit-com that's one and a half hour that's why we have to make this as interesting as possible visually, acting wise and gag wise. The truth is the pilot episode was done in more than two days because we have a big cast and it was really hard doing the special effect," Explains Director Mac.
Insiders from the show said that the "Super Klenk's" special effects budget was really financially stressful but GMA-7 shelled out just the project's success. The special effects have also been at the helm of two creative [unreadable] behind "Super Klenk" five days to decide on which special effects to develop and utilize.
"Super Klenk" was developed with children's Sunday night viewing bits in mind according to GMA's VP for Programming Wilma Galvante. [Unreadable] is a wholesome entertainment but with Ara Mina as the star. "The show [unreadable] promises young televiewers bit only fantastic special effects but also moral lessons that are interjected in every episode.
The launching of "Super Klenk" is in line with the new shows GMA 7 has [unreadable] for its viewing public for the year 2000. The culmination of all their [unreadable] released and offered this year is "Millenium Broadcast."
So how does Ara Mina become Super Klenk?
The unassuming Charito lives an ordinary life as a teacher who has to contend with mischievous students like copycat Xerox and the narcoleptic [unreadable]. As a rescue volunteer, she works with an obnoxious publicity hungry [unreadable: police?] chief, Hope Pimentel.
Her daily routine suddenly shifts to a new gear one day in some dark [unreadable: alley?] when she sees an old lady whom she thought was waylaid by street thugs. Charito tries to revive the seemingly old ago-go dancer, Tondang Xorax (Flora Gasser), who [unreadable] against the wall during a chase with her archenemy Oblada (Sandra Gomez.) Charito's attempt to breathe life back into [unreadable] Xorax proves futile but he superpowers of the aging heroine is accidentally transferred to the young volunteer rescuer. Tondang Xorax [unreadable: magically?] fades into a celestial star right before the unbelieving eyes of the [unreadable: unsuspecting?] Charito. Soon Tondang Xorax visits Charito to inform her the [unreadable: henceforth?], she will be known as Super Klenk.
Also starring Pilita Corrales, Isko Salvador, Paolo Fabregas and James Fabregas.

WHOLESOME ROLE FOR ARA MINA IN GMA-7 SERIES
Quezon City, Dec.11, 1999 - GMA-7 is changing the image of bold star Ara Mina via a wholesome role in the network’s newest fantasy-action comedy series entitled Super Klenk!
Tamang-tama nga dahil ngayong naghihigpit sa bold, heto’t nabigyan naman ako ng chance to do this kind of wholesome show na puwede sa bata and for the whole family,” Ara says. ["It's right because now that the bold is being restricted, I was given the chance to do this kind of wholesome show that can be done by children and for the whole family."]
Ara plays Charito, a dedicated grade school teacher and rescue worker. One night, she witnesses the original Super Klenk meet an serious accident. While trying to give the accident victim some mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, Ara received the special powers of Super Klenk, played by Flora Gasser.
“I become the new Super Klenk, a crimebuster who is the mortal enemy of the main villain in the show, si Oblada, played by Sandra Gomez,” Ara adds. “I enjoy doing this show because para akong si Wonder Woman and I get to do a lot of action scenes while fighting criminals. Nakakalipad din ako rito at ginastusan nila ang special effects sa flying scenes to make it look really convincing on screen.” [I enjoy doing this show because I'm like Wonder Woman and I get to do a lot of action scenes while fighting criminals. I was also able to fly here and they paid for the special effects in the flying scenes to make it look really convincing on screen.]
Playing the love interests of Ara in the show are newcomer Paolo Fabregas (son of actor-musical director Jaime Fabregas) and Isko Salvador (more popularly known as Brod Pete of Ang Dating Doon.)
This does not mean, though, that Ara is turning her back on sexy movies. As a matter of fact, she has just finished Laro sa Baga.
[END]
Philstar Global
The third piece was published on 18th March 2000 on Philstar Global, marking the premature cancellation of the show. Again, translations in colour.
[START]
Ara: Win Some, Lose Some
The sad news is true, after all. Yes, Ara Mina's Super Klenk will have its final telecast (GMA 7) this Sunday. After that, her flying character will be grounded (never to fly again?).
But the good news is that Ara will topbill a new GMA sitcom, untitled just yet, which starts telecast very soon.
"Super Klenk was very hard to shoot because palagi kaming outdoors," [Super Klenk was very hard to shoot because we were always outdoors] said Ara when Funfare talked to her on the set of FPJ Productions' Ayos Na Ang Kasunod (to be released by Millennium Cinema), her first team-up with FPJ. "Our minimum shooting time was two days. I wore a tight costume which could sometimes be very uncomfortable. I'm looking forward to doing the new sitcom which is light and easier to do. Like Super Klenk, pambata din 'yung bago kong sitcom." [Like Super Klenk, my new sitcom is also for children.]
Ara is leaving for Las Vegas third week of April to perform in a concert with Martin and Bert Nievera.
[END]
Cast and crew
Finally, through various sources (the IMDB, actor's profiles, etc.) we are able to pull together a list of the main actors and their characters, as well as some of the key production crew.
Ara Mina as Charito and her alter ego Super Klenk.
Isko Salvador (aka Brod Pete) as Doctor Cortal, the love interest, and also one of the show's writers.
Paolo Fabregas as another doctor and possible love interest.
Flora Gasser as Tondang Xorax, the superhero whose powers are accidentally transferred to the Charito.
Sandra Gomez as Oblada, the show's main villain.
Pilita Corrales as Aunt Baby, the relative Charito lives with.
James (Jaime) Fabregas as Hepe Pimente, the police commissioner and Charito's boss at the rescue team (also the real life father of actor Paolo Fabregas.)
Dingdong Dantes, possible guest actor.
Mark Anthony Fernandez, possible guest actor.
Elizabeth Ramsey as Tiya Kirara, guest actor.
Roxanne Barcelo, possible guest actor.
Yoyong Martirez, possible guest actor.
Mac Alejandre, the showrunner and director.
Wilma Valle Galvante, GMA's VP for Programming.
Conclusion
Over the last couple of years a lot of classic pinoy television has been uploaded, legitimately, to YouTube. The good news is therefore that it is possible that one day Super Klenk may be available for the public to watch once again. The bad news is that, given the obscurity of the show, it could be a very very long wait. Worse still, assuming the episodes do still exist in an archive somewhere, the chances are any uploads will be chopped up into small YouTube friendly chunks, rather than presented in their original 90 minute format. There's always the possibility that the show in its original form may be included on a streaming platform, or re-screened on a golden hits style cable channel, but so far neither of these things have happened.
And so, in the absence of any episodes to watch, the details above are currently all we know about what is possibly tv's most obscure superheroine show (unless you know more?!?) Maybe that will change in future -- here's hoping.
(A quick thank you to DrMuttonChops for tracking down a scan of the Manila Bulletin article, posted years ago on Ara Mina's social media.)

OneNETnews Investigates: A Young Pinay Teenager nab almost PHP3M worth of K-Pop Merch facing Degenerative Hate and colossal Cyberbullying on Social Media
QUEZON, MANILA -- A suspected Pinay teen from Cubao, Quezon City, Manila after she illegally demands PHP2.7M (U$D49,335.34), in exchange for buying collection & merchandise, with a best and biggest names of Korean Pop (excluding Pinoy Pop or P-Pop for SB19, BGYO, HORI7ON, LAPILUS, etc.).
During a news magazine programme of "Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho" aired last Sunday night (March 5th, 2023 -- Manila local time), a Senior High School student named "Bea" (not the actual real name) said, they believe to stole money from her grandmother to secretly buy K-Pop albums and photo cards online.
According to an exclusive report of GMA News, Bea's grandmother Agnes tried to help her with her money allowance for purchasing something in connection for K-Pop, but her family is at serious risk due to low income and can be found in the Cubao market.
Bea's allowance cost PHP450 (U$D8.23) a day or PHP13,500 (U$D246.84) per month. Because of a popular demand, she is planning to buy K-Pop merch and memorabilia online with a disclosed e-wallet payment methods. Not only that, she bought a VIP ticket worth PHP13,250 (U$D242.27) to ENHYPEN's concert last February 3rd to 5th, 2023 during "Manifesto" concert tour at the ShoeMart Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Manila. Before that... She was the only 5th Grader with a consistent graduation because classmates and friends refers to a music scene and culture under the school subject of Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health (MAPEH).
Anne Savisa Boonchuy, former Disney XD News Intern and herpetologist for The Aquatic of the Pacific, who is also an avid Thai fan of K-Pop dives with us on our investigative news team for OneNETnews.
Dr. Camille Garcia, psychologist at the Garcia General Hospital (GGH) in Marikina told GMA News that her symptoms of K-Pop merchs and collection puts her at risk for an Impulse Control Disorder (ICD).
Bea's family tries to get back some of the money by selling some of the items online via mobile broadcasting, but its sadly cut short to 0.51% out of PHP2.7M.
The communities of K-Pop are in toxic beast mode of cyberbullying attack, with a dark side of harassment, massive profanations and excessive trolls, in violation of the Republic Act #10627 or the Anti-Bullying Act of 2013, Article #353 or The Revised Penal Code (known as the Cyber Libel) and The 1987 Philippine Constitution: Article 3 - Section 4. Despite a controversial prime time episode aside to ignoring toxicity, offensive & political comments on social media against Bea and her family, television viewers and streaming online are in hatred peril for a mass boycott and dislikes of KMJS.
Few days ago from last Tuesday (March 7, 2023), Boonchuy obtained the exclusive statement via Facebook post as Jessica Aspiras Soho defending viewers on DZBB-TV's GMA 7: Manila with a bite-sized and rough translation in Tagalog dialect: "It has now emerged that someone claimed to have stolen K-Pop merchandise from MRT-Cubao (Metro Rail Transit), but local police and the station say no one has reported anything. The 'Bea' family, who have been featured on KMJS for stealing millions to buy K-Pop stuff are asking for their privacy. KMJS condemns trolling and bullying of its employees and made this story in total caution, nor offend".
In the pursuant of House Bill #129: Section 4 or "The Online and Social Media Membership Accountability Act", signed by Negros Oriental Representative named Arnolfo "Arnie" Alipit Teves Jr., illegal activities of cyberbullying in any kind against "Bea" and her family if possibly proven guilty on all social media platforms online, most of the Philippine laws are subject for fines, community service in jail or probably both. OneNETnews and Disney XD News cannot independently determine on its said sentence or charges in a nearest regional trial court.
The international showcase of K-Pop collection and merchandise are in big trouble like "Bea", which was soon becomes a trauma star without any public apology in anti-socialism and leads to be a worldwide online protest from bashers, brazenly negative haters, political degenerates and the consequences of social media.
As of this writing, there is no actual remedy to address the issue aside the Korean Pop collection and merch. The management and staff of KMJS will soon terminate its televised programme and a broadcast contract of GMA 7: Manila if the ratings continue to hit a new low.

The Philippine Navy (PN) finally provided some more updates about their upcoming planned acquisitions to the Public recently.
First is that they said that they are planning to acquire to more Corvettes, which I assume means something similar to the Miguel Malvar class Corvettes of the PN that is currently being built. Around two Weeks ago, they said it was going to be, “… either Corvettes or Frigates …”, so now it seems they have settled on what to get.
Second, they said that they will be acquiring six more Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV), which I assume will be similar to the OPVs that are currently also being built in South Korea (SK).
Personally I am not so enthusiastic about those upcoming OPVs, I got a close look as them during the Asian Defense and Security (ADAS) several Months ago, and they are not really good Surface Combatants.
I was going to do a Video about them, but it is just one of those Topics that kept being pushed aside due to one Reason or the other. I intend to make that Video though one of these Days. It makes me wonder if the PN should really be investing in OPVs at all, especially one that seems eager to go to War with a Superpower Country like China.
I think the PN should be investing in more capable Ships, and just leave the Law Enforcement-type Patrolling to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Bureau of Fisheries and Resources (BFAR). Instead of six more OPVs, they could just get two to three more Corvettes or Frigates in place of those.
But that is just my Opinion, of course, up to them to do what they want to do.

Breaking It Down Or Dumbing It Down? How Simplified News and Information and The Blend of Entertainment Impact Media Quality In Philippine Media.
- an argumentative research paper
With the vast amount of information all around us, may it be outside in the world where it's plastered on papers, billboards, or television, or inside in our devices that are connected to the internet where it is like an endless ocean of information - it is easy for people to be overwhelmed. Hence, mass media makes the news and information they put out simple and concise - easily digestible for people to consume. Even as a Communication and Media student who is on the path of pursuing media, we are already being taught to keep the news stories we write, short and simple. Across all media, short-form news is growing in popularity. Its appeal stems from its ability to match up with the needs of busy news consumers and condense, often, complex news into a style that is easy to understand. According to Claire Murphy, host of The Quicky, it is the “fast food” of journalism and appeals to people who are always on the go. In the Philippines, a large portion of people have varying degrees of literacy and education. Everyone, including people without formal education or much time to read in-depth reports, can benefit from simplified news. The media makes sure it reaches more people without excluding anyone by presenting complicated subjects in a straightforward and understandable manner - making it accessible to anyone. But then, to spice things up to make news even more attractive for people to consume they mix it up with entertainment, thus calling it “infotainment” - with so many entertainment options and alternative media platforms available, people who have no interest in politics o current affairs could easily avoid it entirely (Boukes, M. 2019). The surge of simplified news and infotainment indicates that mass media prioritizes not only the easier distribution of information but also to stay financially viable and maintain revenue. While mass media serves as a bridge, making critical information available to broader audiences who might be left out of public discourse because of their degree of education, this approach also risks encouraging a culture of passive consumption, where audiences prioritize the value of what is entertaining over what is substantial. The simplification of news and the use of infotainment is a double-edged sword, while it makes information accessible, it also takes away the chance for consumers to learn the importance of understanding the depth of the information they’re consuming - thus taking away the learning opportunity to be responsible media consumers with critical thinking skills.
The emergence of digital media and its domination against traditional media significantly reinforced the trend of simplified news in Philippine media. This posed a threat against the media giants GMA and ABS-CBN, once the main outlets for investigative journalism and in-depth reporting, which are under growing pressure to adapt to fast-paced, bite-sized content, preferred by online consumers. Social media platforms especially Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have created an environment where news is now consumed in bite-sized, attention-grabbing bits. Additionally, according to a 2023 study titled "We Are Social," Filipinos are among the most active online users in the globe, logging on for an average of four hours every day. This shift and recurring trend in the media landscape has led to a preference for sensational headlines and quick updates, often at the price of in-depth research in news telling. Mass media companies must fight for relevance in this hyperconnected environment with entertainment, advertisements, and personal content for viewers’ attention. Sensational headlines, short videos, and visually appealing pictures are preferred as a result; these strategies may be effective, but they often compromise depth. Both GMA's 24 Oras Express and ABS-CBN's TV Patrol provide brief video summaries of significant events in less than five minutes, frequently with text overlays or subtitles for ease of comprehension. These formats, which appeal to viewers with little time, are frequently shared on websites like Facebook and YouTube - to increase their chances of getting viewership, they often reduce complex in-depth stories to simple headlines or quick updates. For example, ABS-CBN’s TV Patrol posted a headline photo news card on Facebook that said “Presyo ng siling labuyo sa Metro Manila tumaas dahil sa bagyo” and upon checking the citizens’ responses, they didn’t take the news seriously and made jokes about it. But when you read their article, it says that chilis are perishable goods. Additionally, according to vendors, there is a shortage of chiles because harvesting them has been difficult due to unfavorable weather conditions. Both vendors and customers are impacted by the brief surge, even though the Department of Agriculture (DA) observes that these price increases typically level off after two weeks.
Another example is ABS-CBN News’ Facebook post with the headline “Sara Duterte says gov’t ignoring ‘threats’ to her life”, which garnered mixed reactions from citizens, most making jokes about it. Although the title is clear, it does not convey the article's narrative. She repeatedly highlights the government's inaction in responding to her allegations of danger throughout the piece. Though they are not completely represented in the headline, the article also discusses other important but secondary topics, such as her grievances on political persecution, the management of confidential funds, and the absence of due process for her employees. Another instance, GMA News’ Facebook post titled “Marcos a drug addict? 'I agree with the assumption,' says Sara Duterte”. Although the headline is attention-grabbing and highlights a controversial topic, it simplifies and focuses on just one claim: Sara Duterte's support for the "drug addict" accusation. However, by describing the political and familial tensions around the comment, as well as the history of similar charges and the relationship between Dutertes and Marcos, the article provides a more comprehensive context. The title is more sensationalized and concentrates on a headline-grabbing statement, even though it accurately describes the content. The claim's complex origins and further political context are given in the article.
Simplified news on social media often misleads or trivializes serious topics resulting in shallow engagement from audiences. For instance, readers react with humor rather than alarm to Abs-Cbn's headline about siling labuyo prices during a typhoon which minimizes the economic decline of weather impacts on agriculture. Similar to these, headlines like Sara Duterte believe that Marcos is a drug addict or Sara Duterte said the government ignores threats to her life oversimplify complicated political issues and cause emotions that are more centered on sensationalism than the larger political context. Although news is made up of event-focused texts, the number of descriptive sentences and sentence parts relating to non-essential information is significant. These descriptions may have nothing to do with any of the actual events, but they nonetheless add to the general intricacy of news (Glavas & Stajner, 2013). Even while these headlines are true they obscure complex news stories reducing intellectual engagement and promoting a more superficial understanding of important issues. A study titled “The Effect of Interest and Attitude on Public Comprehension of News with Data Visualization” by Sánchez-Holgado, et al, states that training and educating the public to raise demand for and interest in data-based information is pertinent because it fosters critical thinking and an understanding of scientific communication. But with the difficult access to quality education in the country and the continuing trend of news and information being reduced to simple and attention-seeking formats, developing people’s critical thinking and comprehension skills continue to be unreachable.
Philippine mass media giants such as GMA and ABS-CBN have monopolized much of the media field for decades, dominating the airtime on Filipinos’ televisions and other news platforms in the country. Their news programs, GMA’s 24 Oras and ABS-CBN’s TV Patrol have become staples in Filipino households, a family’s must-watch during the evening to catch up on daily news and current affairs. These networks have basically become part of Filipinos’ culture, their opinions, ideas, and beliefs have been shaped based on what they always see on their televisions and devices. For years, it has been noticed how these giants have been blending entertainment in delivering news, integrating programs such as GMA’s Chika Minute and ABS-CBN’s Star Patrol, to broadcast the latest updates about the latest celebrity gossip and entertainment news to farm engagement from the audience - blurring the line between information and entertainment. This trend shows that both mass media giants use infotainment to maintain their dominant positions in the media landscape, prioritizing commercial appeal and audience ratings over delivering the information the people must and should know. The problem with infotainment being part of the news for so long is that it has cultivated Filipinos’ mindset that entertainment updates are just as important as news about politics, social issues, etc. On social media, you can observe how celebrity gossip often overshadows real-life issues because they’re fun to catch up on.
The concern that the rise of infotainment is undermining the informative function of news and information has been a long-standing issue in the media. Critics argue that infotainment reduces public intellect and discourse. Neil Postman's critique in Amusing Ourselves to Death (1982, 1989), suggests that television journalism has turned into a show business where the goal is to entertain rather than to enlighten. He argues that this has created a situation where viewers consume decontextualized pieces of information that require minimal cognitive effort. Because of this, the mass media giants’ content frequently turns into a passive experience that, at best, promotes superficial understanding rather than stimulating critical thought or discussion.
While some will argue that the simplification of news and the use of infotainment helps in delivering news and information in a better, accessible way - the constant use of mass media giants risks diluting the substance of the information being shared with its audience. The Filipinos’ tendency to believe in misinformation and disinformation - contributing even to spreading these on social media platforms - has shown how many Filipinos lack critical thinking (Inquire.net, 2023). The ongoing consumption of simplified news, paired with a pervasive culture of infotainment in the Philippines’ mass media giants, nurtures a cycle where surface-level engagement and understanding become the norm. People are discouraged from delving deeper into stories in this setting, which keeps them from learning how to critically assess and analyze news reporting. Misinformation will continue to spread uncontrolled as a result of these behaviors, which poses a serious risk to the public's capacity to make educated judgments regarding significant societal concerns.
In a third-world country where it is ranked as 111th out of 199 countries in the latest WPR measuring IQ scores, it is important to take into account that the possible root of all of these issues that Filipinos face in consuming mass media content is the poor quality of education in the Philippines. While several studies have highly recommended improving the education system to better the intellect and mindset of Filipinos, it will also be an important step for mass media to take a step in contributing to improving Filipinos’ IQ and overall critical thinking. Improving the education system is ideal yet it is unreachable thus why the responsibility does not solely lie with it but also lies with mass media giants to elevate the quality of their content. Mass media giants can create a better-informed audience by prioritizing content over sensationalism, which will motivate viewers to interact critically with subjects rather than only watching entertainment-focused programming.
