The Philippine Navy (PN) finally provided some more updates about their upcoming planned acquisitions to the Public recently.
First is that they said that they are planning to acquire to more Corvettes, which I assume means something similar to the Miguel Malvar class Corvettes of the PN that is currently being built. Around two Weeks ago, they said it was going to be, “… either Corvettes or Frigates …”, so now it seems they have settled on what to get.
Second, they said that they will be acquiring six more Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV), which I assume will be similar to the OPVs that are currently also being built in South Korea (SK).
Personally I am not so enthusiastic about those upcoming OPVs, I got a close look as them during the Asian Defense and Security (ADAS) several Months ago, and they are not really good Surface Combatants.
I was going to do a Video about them, but it is just one of those Topics that kept being pushed aside due to one Reason or the other. I intend to make that Video though one of these Days. It makes me wonder if the PN should really be investing in OPVs at all, especially one that seems eager to go to War with a Superpower Country like China.
I think the PN should be investing in more capable Ships, and just leave the Law Enforcement-type Patrolling to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Bureau of Fisheries and Resources (BFAR). Instead of six more OPVs, they could just get two to three more Corvettes or Frigates in place of those.
But that is just my Opinion, of course, up to them to do what they want to do.
