oh my god I'm using Unreal 5.1 for the first time and the new way it handles control inputs is a fucking game changer. They're individual files??? With advanced settings per action mapping??? That allows you to change those settings during play? So I don't have to navigate the nightmare of altering stuff in Project Settings during runtime?

My brother and I finished our 8th Global Game Jam project together over the weekend! This was definitely a crazy GGJ and different than usual. We did a little bit of both but I mostly focused on the programming, game design, and writing on the game while he worked on most of the art and UI.
Tag World Roots is a game where you play as a bird who raises children to level up skills, socialize, and ultimately compete in a tournament.
🎮 Here's the link to play the game!
I'd love to hear what you think!

gæmz meetup cover art in 2023 so far.
i’ve been a bit busy & was not always in the same place in 2023 for personal reasons and work. so i’ve only been doing gæmz very sporadically again but so far we did one in april and the first special popup gæmz in may. there are the cover art.
#20 cover art is my response to all the kings content i saw in a week or so for some reasons (but also due to everyone playing totk) so it’s burger link.
#19 cover art features roots i made for ggj 2023 at goldsmith.

Our GGJ 2023 game, Turnip the Heat!, is out now!
It's a short arcade game about hosting the best hot tub party for your friends (who are all root vegetables).  The root of a good party is a good host: keep the tub toasty and clean, get the drinks and d'oeuvres flowing, and satisfy your steamy guests in this rootin tootin party panic! Just keep an eye on your InstaYam or your bustling buds buzz'll be busted...

Heyyyy guys, I'm not dead! Sorry this has taken so long. And thank you for staying here so far ♥ This is not entirely my work, since all background assets were actually made by @yaribethvt and I only did the main character, but I still wanted to share them with you! These are fake screenshots from the game we made for the Global Game Jam 2023, which we didn't actually got to finish, (so I cannot share a link for you to play. sorry!) but since we finished all the visuals, I wanted to arrange something to show off! This was my first experience in a GGJ (I think you can tell), but it was a GREAT experience and I hope to participate on the next one too! ♥ The game was a simple platformer about a Dryad who protected the forests from human destruction! Special thanks to our favorite producer @marialuisadfg , who did everything to make this possible, from organizing the group to searching for the sounds of the game to bring us warm tea when we couldn't sleep due to work! #ggj #ggj2023 #globalgamejam #globalgamejam2023 #gamedev #conceptart https://www.instagram.com/p/CqA9DqzgrRM/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

NaNoRenO 2023 - Week 0
Tumblr media
Image: Datable character design, currently named 'Nami Numi' as a joke.
Outside of my two courses, I am currently completing the prep work for NaNoRenO 2023, which is a game jam centered around creating a complete visual novel in one month. I forgot to mark my calendar, so I'm starting prep weeks late this year, but I at least got here before the actual start.
As outlined on the website, the weeks leading up to the start allow for: brainstorming, plot outlining, sketches that do not lead to direct production of assets, and team building. Unfortunately, this year I am working by myself on the project, but the GGJ for this year gave me much more belief in myself. I've started doodling some ideas for the characters, and working on the plot outline already, as brainstorming only took a small amount of time.
My general idea is that you, the player, are e-dating a girl in a game similar to VRChat. You two have never met each other in real life, but half the game will be taking place 'in-game', and the other half in real life. To really present my skills in the popular model creator VRoid, I will be making the characters avatars, so that the real-world sprites will be 2D and the incredibly-wild in-game characters will be in 3D, to differentiate. This will also put less strain on my art pipeline, as the 3D sprites can be posed and then have visual edits later, as opposed to making four entire sets of sprites. This is all I have set in stone at the current moment.
I will be updating my progress per week, and hopefully I will have a fully-produced game by the end of it! I'm so excited to work on this game jam, as deadlines really help me! It will be a very tight schedule this month around, as was last game jams, as I have both courses going on, an event at the end of March, and this game jam.

Shenandoah 2023 Global Game Jam. Had fun working with talented musicians, programmers, and artists! Was a crazy journey learning the FDS sound chip in two days. Tons of cool submissions from everyone.
The theme for the 2023 GGJ was ‘Roots.’ Play as farmer Joe and stand against the Veggiepocalypse!

In this first-person slasher (made in seven days for the 2023 Global Game Jam), you must escape Medusa's lair, and defeat her army, lest you be "rooted" to the spot by their petrifying gaze.
Use your Sword to deflect the gaze back at enemies to turn them to stone, or absorb energy to direct it back at your foes!

CSG-180-200 AND CSG-133-200 - Week 03
Tumblr media
Image: The Promblem - the small visual novel that Madison Smith and I created for the GGJ 2023.
Due to a TON of real-life stuff going on, AND the addition of the Global Game Jam, I took the week off from any project work to solely put my focus into the GGJ project. Thankfully, that means that we were able to make a complete game (minus we did not have time to polish it). The story beats, sprites, and sounds are there. So, this post will be about this project, to make up for the lack of work done.
The theme that developers were given this year was 'roots', and while we loosely formed our game around this concept, we focused our aesthetics on the diversifier that was celebrating the new years with cats and rabbits. We also decided that we wanted a more relatable story, but to include both our personal experiences and touches to it. With this in mind, we decided to make a small story about a (nb), mixed-race protagonist trying to ask the stereotypical 'pretty popular girl' out to prom on Friday, with choices affecting the visuals and story beats.
It was also a fun teaching opportunity, as we chose Ren'py to develop our game, and Madison had not previously worked on it. I made entire guides for sections of what was needed, and once she had finished writing most of the story and wanted to take a crack at other things, we bounced our workloads off each other when each of us had to take a break or step away. We worked literally every day of that week, up until the two hours before the project was due. We decided that, since the game was at a decent state and if we pursued more polish that we would most likely run out of time, that we would publish the game in it's 1.7 state. If we had the time later in the semester, we agreed we'd like to finish the game up on the seams that we missed. In addition, Madison kindly played the finished version of the game to determine what it was missing from our original plan, and I'm happy to report that only four Trello cards had been left! It was a really fun experience, and while exhausting, was very worthwhile. I think I will be reaching out to Madison in the future to work on projects!
