Here's most of my backgrounds for the lovely short film Garage Sale!

I've spent almost all of my animation career being brought on to help with either animation or storyboarding, so when @ragtagstuff reached out and asked if I could instead help lead the charge with establishing the backgrounds, it was too cool to pass up!

The idea that I remember proposing (this was a couple years ago now so I could be wrong here lol) was to take a color thumb that I think @deadlycomics drew earlier for the project and make its color choices run through the entire film, and I later set up a style guide to help make it easier for others to match the look.

I still love the end results that everyone turned in, and how well it comes together to capture its idea of a dreamy, hazy summer/early autumn's evening. Most of the backgrounds I made were focused on the all-important garage sale itself, there was more than enough junk valuable trinkets to draw for it that kept me busy at the time. xP

Anyway this is all a long-winded way to say that I'm so absolutely pumped that someone who was making an animated film wanted my help in backgrounds instead of animation/storyboards. I love being thrown curveballs like that, it means the world to me. 💖

Shopping Cheap etiquette:

General TAKE ONLY WHAT YOU NEED. ACCEPT "NO" AS A COMPLETE ANSWER. UNDERSTAND TIME IS A PRIVILEGE. KEEP SETS TOGETHER.

At the Thrift Store Don't hide things. You might be able to get bulk discounts if you ask politely. (I bought $40 worth of books for $20). Keep track of discount days. Check the Thrift Store first, so they can keep donations moving. On Marketplace or Classifieds Keep an eye out for scam listings. Read descriptions closely for any weirdness. Tell a friend where you'll be if picking up in an unfamiliar area. Respond to messages in a timely manner.

At the Flea Market Expect to rummage. Get to know the sellers. Learn to recognize rip-offs. Only try to haggle if you know what the item is worth. Keep sets together. If you don't need all of it, don't buy it.

At an Estate Sale or Auction Be respectful of the previous homeowners. Don't try to haggle down your bid after purchase. If you buy it on accident, you still have to pick it up. Don't push pickup times. Take a chance on the $5 piles.

Garage Sale Haggling is usually expected. Don't park in anyone's way. Be friendly. Don't comment on people's property or items. Be neighborly.

At the Farmer's Market Make conversation, get to know people. Don't try to come to a booth while they are packing or setting up. Don't avoid imperfect food. Bring reusable bags and jars. Learn meat and veggie lingo. Avoid the resellers. They take up booth space from farmers.

At the Antique Store Don't swap price labels. Don't hide things for later. Expect rummaging. The staff doesn't know what's in the store. Understand different booths price differently. If you break it, you buy it. If the sign says "do not touch" don't touch it. Ask for help moving furniture or unlocking cases.

Shopping Online Shop online last. Always review who you buy from reasonably. Triple check the description. Don't complain about something you were warned about. Contact the seller with questions. Double check for "local pickup" listings.

Foraging food Leave only footprints. I've seen so much trash from foragers. If you can, grow it, don't forage it. Go for invasive edibles first. Don't forage in protected woods. Always leave some behind. Don't resell foraged food. Only. Take. What. You. Need.

Local community garage sale haul!

1st thing I bought was a South Park funko pop (it came with the box) of Stan. It was 3$.

2nd thing was this tiny bird. Not much else to say but the seller was also selling crystals. (I did not buy them) it was 50 cents.

3rd thing was this Japanese Oni Mask. It was actually for free as the seller was packing up the garage sale and throwing stuff away. I don’t know what brand or company it is at the moment but I got it cuz it looked cool.

4th is an enderman plush. It was also 3$.

5th is a camera from a vintage Barbie game. I didn’t buy the game but I got the camera instead. It costed a dollar.

6th is a Reginald Squishmallow. It was 25 cents. He also had his tag on as well, but I cut it off and put it with my other squish tags.

7th is a fur-suit tail. I also got this for free as it was the same seller as the mask. I can’t believe they were throwing this out! These are expensive and worth a lot of money! It was also in good, clean condition and had a clip for attachment.

I didn’t get the 8th item as it costed 20$ and was super heavy, but it’s literally the rock/stone from that one meme!

I also saw a firefly while selling my stuff too! I wonder if that firefly was a friend of ours who had recently died cuz it kept flying around my dad in broad daylight.

MCR vs FOB.

It is going off today, let us tell you. It seems 2023 is the new 2008 (or indeed the new 1989), because it seems we are amid The Great Emo Beatdown of 2023, featuring two true titans of the genre: #mcr and #fall out boy, no less. The news in brief: Frank Iero, of My Chemical Romance fame, has launched his brand spankin' rootin'-tootin' official online megastore. This megastore has, in reality, proven to be a digital garage sale featuring a, uh, copious number of gloves amongst its plunder. At the same time, fellow emo behemoths Fall Out Boy have released a cover of Billy Joel's No.1 hit single from 1989, "We Didn't Start the Fire" that runs through a list of proper nouns ripped from the historic headlines. FOB, have, kindly, updated the list for the years 1989-2023. For those of us still sporting our hair jet black, our Vans jet black, our torn jeans jet black, and our makeup the very jettest of blacks, these last days of June, 2023 will live long in the memory.

Needless to say, the dear folk of the dashboard are simply lapping up every moment of this delightfully bonkers emo drama in which Fall Out Boy actually lovingly reference My Chemical Romance's Black Parade as one of the hallowed 33 defined moments of modern times. We love it. And while we're at it, we'll take a pair of those sweaty, torn gloves if you don't mind, Mr Iero.
