Oh I had some YU-NO thoughts cache'd I never shared. Thought #1: Btw YU-NO is a 1996 eroge time travel PC-98 VN, context I guess.
Anyway, so in visual novels you often have two goals: fuck multiple hotties and tell an engaging story. These goals are synergistic when your love interests are the story; you choose a girl, and your learn about her and date her and have relationship drama. That is one type of VN, but its not all types - every genre is present in the dating sim VN world, mystery & sci-fi/fantasy plots most commonly.
Here you start running into an issue; you want multiple romance routes, but you don't want to just repeat the story each time you date them. Most people will play multiple or even all the routes. But its not like you are going to write five different endings to your mystery plot. And you can't just...fuck all of them on the way to the ending as one cohesive story, because you are pathetic coward of a dev team and also a nation. A common answer to this dilemma (I first experienced it in G-senjou No Maou) is for you to have a "main" girl, whose romance arc is the plot arc. And then the other girls are clear side girls, who are involved in the main story, sure, and who will give you tidbits, of course, but at a certain point in your arc with them you just trail off. You forget about the murder mystery or whatever, you just date them, have sex scenes, and you will even sometimes have an epilogue where you remark "man, whatever happened with that crazy shit back then?" Its a bit of an odd genre convention but you can see how it works, its lets you have new content and date all the girls without ruining the story, you know who is the 'main' girl is after all.
YU-NO is a mystery sci-game, and it a quantum multiverse/timelines mystery game. You go through the story, and you collect objects along that story, and you also get jewels that let you anchor your spot in the worldline and teleport back to them with your inventory intact. It looks insane btw:
You get no in-game explanation of it at all, the idea of playing this without a guide seems like a cursed no-sleep streaming challenge.
But anyway, this opens up an interesting idea to you as a designer. You are intentionally supposed to hop back and forth in time, to collect items, and unlock the true ending. So why not build all the romance route storylines around that time travel? And put items at the end of each of those romance arcs? Now you can date them all! In fact, you have to! There is a perfectly logical, in-universe reason for why you have 5 different romance arcs; they are happening in different timelines. You date girl one first, then skip back in time, and start on the next - the main character only barely remembers the time skips, to him he doesn't even feel like he is cheating. Pretty sure its intentionally written that way to make that plot conceit work.
I'm sure other games have done similar tricks, but I think YU-NO is the first - it is a pioneer in VN space for using the high-concept quantum timeline stuff, that is its claim to fame. Its a cute little trick, I like it a lot.

Todays rip: 25/11/2023
waterwraith pokos
Season 6 Featured on: Transmission Archive ~ The SiIvaGunner All-Star Nuclear Winter Festival Collection
Ripped by Sponge Lord
youtube
Requested by Anonymous ● Mild NSFW Warning
Man, I'm just...picking the BEST and most popular rips of all time to showcase recently, huh? As described above, waterwraith pokos was an anonymous submission, of a rip that I've earnestly never once heard of - using a joke that was completely foreign to me. There was something truly eerie about it all, and led me down a very...fascinating rabbithole.
I've reminisced several times on how nostalgic the earlier years of SiIvaGunner was, and that was in large part due to just how mysterious it all seemed. Nobody had any clue about how the lore would develop, how the backroom would develop the channel's core set of jokes, and a lot of the minor memes like Bowflex, Eggnog and Nathaniel Welchert didn't even have any internet history behind them: they were full-on inside jokes that the team turned into memes on the channel. There's a lot of fascinating stuff to be found in browsing the SiIva wiki and tabbing from rip to rip, with so many people contributing so many obscure ideas to the table, many of which hardly stuck. For instance, Jiko Music noted earlier this year with Trail on Powdery Snow Halation that they were attempting to make Close Your Eyes from the game G-Senjou no Maou a running joke during earlier parts of the channel, but decided to stop after it wasn't really going anywhere. Basically, its sometimes just as interesting to remember the efforts that didn't amount to much just as much as the ones that get celebrated and remembered regularly by the channel.
All that is to say, that I'd never once heard of the audio source "Foreskin Quarters" before investigating waterwraith pokos. To my understanding, its effectively just another one of the internet's many widely-spread grossout videos, this one involving a British man, his genitalia, and a handful of quarters. Yet what seems to have made this video in particular stick with the small handful of rippers using it is the very, peculiar audio - the man's humming, the sounds of quarters hitting a metallic surface, and his enthusiastic "Jackpot!" exclamation near the video's end. This audio, paired with the already unnerving sound of Submerged Castle, and the faint knowledge of what the video's contents are...it creates a rather unsettling image, yknow? I've never been able to see "Foreskin Quarters" in its original form, yet just the atmosphere the rip sets is enough to get the mind churning.
SiIva's rips, as much as they can make me laugh, swell up in emotion, engross me, and so much more...have an innate ability to grab my interest down the strangest of rabbit holes. Its a distillation of all parts of internet history - including its absolute most bizarre points. And while waterwraith pokos ain't going into any of my playlists, I don't think I'll ever be able to forget it.
Jackpot!

My time with visual novels came flooding back. I barely remember the stories of any of them. The most prominent one was G senjou no maou. The music was good. I liked that the main girl waited for you after you went to jail. I loved 'air on the g-string' so much that I had it at our wedding instead of the wedding march. It felt like I was marrying the best girl. I don't think I ever told her I learned of that piece because of a VN... I remember saying my vow that I'd love her in every possibility...or something like that. When I was asked if I wanted to marry her, I said 'I do' confidently, and the room erupted in laughter. It broke me. Why was it funny? What the fuck did they know that I didn't? For once I felt confident with something, and it made people laugh? Just...I'm dreading watching our wedding for our kids if ever they ask. Every time I go back to that day, I just want everyone to leave, and just be with my spouse. Maybe I won't feel like a laughing stock for being in love. God...what did my best witnesses even do with the special packages I gave them? Each with a symbol to represent them. Always with these thought out gifts that no one really reciprocates. Except my wife...I don't hug the stuffies she made me enough. Bag is the best. The bunny with the runny mascara, haha, and the three tailed artic fox... I keep forgetting all the effort she puts in her crochet. She seems to do it so easily that it seems like second nature to her, rather than a conscious undertaking. The everyday was sometimes takes away from it...I'm...I'm bringing Bag to the office...I need a friend...I need to remember how much she cares about me even if it's not through words or roleplay or stories...or even journal sharing...I want to meet her halfway and then some...two of our cats were lost...I suspect someone took them...because I'm just sad our 14 year old didn't stay close...How did our male that always bolted outside NOT take that opportunity...why did he stay/come back, but not the other two that never hounded the door?
I remember other visual novels, like Saya no Uta. The other was one where they were kemonomimi dog-girls. It taught me there was a difference between Nukige, and Visual Novels. It took me a while to realise how some characters were Lolitas. But once I did, I started noticing how common this was. I eventually stopped watching anime, and playing visual novels constantly. It was too much. It still is too much. Thank goodness for Dungeon Menshi...
It's nice to journal any time. Usually people would notice my book, and then I'd have to stop writing. Now, I might as well be on the internet for all they know...when actually I'm etching what I can...
Oh! Hahaha. I remembered a thought yesterday where I wanted my skin to be flayed, my muscles flensed. My nerves, and veins plucked. In other words, leave only bone, and display my skeleton at the funeral. Donate my body. I'm just bones...Might as well... I'd have runes chiseled into them...they'd turn to dust too...as meaningless to uphold my will, as it is to supplant them. Life has existed for billions of years without me. It will be fine for the other billions.
It doesn't matter if I'm infinitesimal...it still just draws a line, or whatever...
Aw shit! I just stuck my jalapenos addled finger into my eye!

G SENJOU NO MORE
ok just got to chapter 5 and the story has effectively hit self destruct and is now proceeding to just heartlessly wrap up with every shitty cliche imaginable; completely avoiding OBVIOUS avenues of intrigue it could have taken with what was established.
the mc seriously just has an evil twin who was the source of all conflict? the main girl is unquestionably in love with the mc because of some idyllic childhood promise bullshit? all the scenes that led you to believe there was an unreliable narrator and that the mc was double timing as the main villain were A COMPLETE LIE??? WHAT THOUGHTLESS DRIVEL!!!!! AN ABSOLUTE WASTE OF DECENT POTENTIAL
I have NEVER seen a story fall apart as suddenly as this... you would have to be a newborn to media CHILD to think this is good shit I am actually disgusted >:(
All the numerous scenes that painted the image of a protagonist struggling against his decision to either submit to a life of VILLAINOUS GANGSTER-ING for mad profit - VERSUS living a life without strife and petty vengeance; following that ‘love conquers all’ mentality the resolution to all the previous chapters illustrated, ARE MADE NONSENSICAL in relation to this apparent TRUE ending with the revelation that “SOME OTHER GUY - YOUR EVIL TWIN BROTHER” was the one behind all the schemes that JUST SO HAPPENED to involve all of his friends and targets of anguish. what the hell man...
WHAT’S WORSE is that this shit has the pompous GAUL to portray some of the most flaccid action sequences, mind-games, and reveals ever to be put on a vn screen as if they are UNREAL LEVELS OF PEAK FICTION HYPE DUDE like BRO the final chapter is the name of the game AHHHHHHHH fuck right off dude.................fuck this..............
tldr i was decently enjoying this vn, but it progressively got worse as it was going along, and I’m quite disappointed the final revelation was as lame as it was. oh well! it’s fun to be able to get so uppity about something even if it’s ultimately lackluster ;)
#G SENJOU NO MAOU#NO MORE#DROPPED#HOLY FUCK DUDE#SHIT FOR THE BIRDS#THIS VN#IS POO POO#FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK#IM THE ANGRY VN NERD#THE DEVIL ON G STRING#MORE LIKE THE DEVIL ON SHIT STRING#AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH#i need a good#visual novel#palate cleanser asap

The days of early CCC hold a very special place in my heart, since it was the first time that I became fully invested in the channel. Prior to that, while I had sought out the Reboot storyline and experienced the surprise posthumous (at the time) Halloween event, I was only a casual viewer, and a relatively new one at that, only really subscribing after the channel had seemingly ended. Despite this, once the CCC began and the first few lore videos dropped, I was immediately hooked. I think it was mostly due to the obvious parallels between Planet Robobot, which was (and still is) both my absolute favorite Kirby game and probably my GOTY for 2016. That combined with a storyline that continued off of the Reboot and Halloween's plot points, and a dystopian wintertime aesthetic, really captured my attention, and made me pay more attention to the channel, leading to me eventually learn how to make rips.
As such, by the time I had joined the channel in 2018, I wanted to pay tribute to this specific era of the channel. I knew I wanted to make something that felt right out of that initial Christmas event, even down to wanting to use a track that somehow tapped into both the Winter and Robot themes that had defined early CCC's rips. I ended up finding Trail on Powdery Snow from Mega Man Zero 3, which not only fit both of the aforementioned themes, but was also a banger in its own right.
Once I knew which song I wanted to use, I decided to have two distinct loops: One which utilized sources which were either frequently used or newly introduced in December 2016, and a second loop consisting of more iconic/traditional Christmastime-related songs. Of course, I wanted to go the extra mile as well, so I threw in some non-melodyswap jokes for the third loop for good measure, even reaching out to Grambam to see if he could do an additional HHGregg section.
I think the only two things that I regret with this rips are 1. This came at a time where I was trying to force Close Your Eyes from G-Senjou no Maou as a running source, something that I tried to steer away from after Season 3 ended. While that song did appear a small number of times in Dec. 2016, it does feel shoehorned and out-of-place compared to all of the more recognizable/fitting sources in that loop. 2. A section in the third loop ended up deadnaming someone. I don't think they actually came out until the year after, it still hasn't aged all too well in that regard.
Aside from those two issues, I'm still relatively proud with this one, and think it hold up better than most of my other 2018 rips.

Trail on Powdery Snow Halation
Season 3 Featured on: SiIvaGunner's Highest Quality Rips: Volume AI Also on: Dr. Pavel's How the Grinch Took Over SiIvaGunner
Ripped by Jiko Music, Grambam36
youtube
As we speak, SiIvaGunner is currently in its 7th season. Officially dubbed "The Year of Grand Dad", its aim has largely been to reminisce over the channel's history up to this point, remixing and rearranging tons of its old favorites to celebrate the funny number milestone. As long-time viewers will be aware, though, this is *far* from the first time the channel has celebrated its own legacy, and it likely won't be the last.
I feel like Season 3 was the first time that you could tell things were truly changing with the SiIvaGunner channel, as it was really the first time the channel operated without an expected direction. Season 1 operated on the element of surprise, and gradually became a ping-pong back-and-forth between the creator and the audience, which in turn resulted in dynamic story events like The Reboot. Season 2, meanwhile, built on that to launch a full-scale story with the Christmas Comeback Crisis, which ballooned in scope as to sort of hang over the entire season - even more lore and added story elements kept being added, be it the Inspector Gadget takeover as discussed in Become as Gadget or the bizarre rise of AMUNO, and it carried on at full force for the entire season. By the time Season 3 arrived, the CCC and lore in general felt a little like it had run out of steam - so much had already been done that it was understandable for the SiIva team to want something of a break.
Season 3, in turn, wound up being one of the most interesting seasons in the channel's life in my eyes, through the sort of mysterious vibe it held throughout. Lore villain of Season 2 seemed to, mysteriously, no longer be controlling the channel: instead, the SiIvaGunner we all knew and loved appeared to be back in the reigns...somehow. The lore progressed, but through mysterious datafiles detailing additional worldbuilding and a summary of the events of the prior two seasons. And, most importantly of all - several rips uploaded began feeling strangely nostalgic.
According to the rip's primary creator, Jiko Music, Trail on Powdery Snow Halation was specifically made as a callback to 2016's style of rips (that is to say, Season 1 and early Season 2). It specifically slots in perfectly with the early Season 2 Holiday rips that initially premiered the Christmas Comeback Crisis - its a melody-swap medley of several channel memes and popular christmas tunes, all in the instrumentation of Trail on Powdery Snow from Mega Man Zero 3. And like, just from that description this rip was bound to strike a chord with me - I love Mega Man Zero with all of my heart, I adore Season 2 of SiIvaGunner, and I was already enamored with Season 3's fascinating ways of paying tribute to the channel's past. It was rarely in-your-face about it, even during the loud and clear "Nostalgia Critic Takeover" - it was like you'd just been transported back to an older time, both with the styalistic direction of rips like this one and with the bevvy of old rips being remastered or reuploaded.
Releasing near the end of the year (and, unbeknownst to us, near the channel's sudden termination per copyright), Trail on Powdery Snow Halation is a rip I hold a lot of memories with. I really think Jiko Music achieved their goal with the direction of the rip - its a true trip down memory lane, yet one that feels immensely earned and doesn't bolster it as something overtly sentimental in the same way the File Select Fusion Collab did. If you, like me, get nostalgic and feel your heart tugged by this rip, its entirely due to your own memories.
