Fust — Big Ugly (Dear Life)
Tumblr media
The North Carolina-based Fust flexes its country rock muscles in this third full-length, its hangdog tales delivered in sweeping, twangy crescendos. The band, headed by guitarist and singer/songwriter Aaron Dowdy, has never sounded better, marshaling a wall of rustic sound built of three guitars (one pedal steel), a bass, fiddle, piano and drums.
These are desolate tales set in dying communities, sung in a vibrato-tinged tenor with a little bit of cry in it. Yet the mood is never wholly dark, since the arrangements are triumphant and even the direst lyrical scenarios are buoyed by connection and community. “They tore down the hospital out on Route 11, I’m not sure what happened, seems like repossession,” Dowdy begins in “Spangled,” the first song on the disc, a bleak observation that could apply to hundreds if not thousands of rural towns left behind. And yet, the song swaggers with confidence, its conventional guitars roaring, its pedal steel winding through thick textures of distortion. And even the words find a way to celebrate what’s left of a beloved home town. “Yeah I’m feeling pretty spangled/I’m feeling like heaven/I’m feeling like a sparkler/That’s been thrown off a roof,” Dowdy declaims, a few beers in but resilient.
Alcohol is a recurring theme, as are diminished expectations, as Dowdy tells the stories of the folks who never get a chance to leave. In “Gateleg,” the sons of men who worked at Union Carbide now labor at a retail outlet, stocking shelves, running cash registers. “We do our best, but the best laid plans often go amiss,” Dowdy observes, in an epitaph for a disappearing middle class. “Jody” picks up the story after the shift ends and the drinking begins. It’s a clear-eyed sketch of people without prospects, a loving tribute to a high school sweetheart sliding blearily into middle age. The chorus says the saddest, truest thing when it asserts, “As southern kids we learned how to drink enough /It’s all we’ve got.” And yet, the song works a tipsy, vertiginous magic with its brash guitars and its beckoning fiddle riffs. The melody admits to sadness but refuses to sink under it.
These songs run the gamut from acoustic lament (“Big Ugly”) to fuzzy, crusty rockers like “Mountain Language,” evoking Neil Young, Built to Spill, Son Volt and Uncle Tupelo. They’ll bust up the joint and break your heart, and the warm, communal fog of a drink or two might be what you need to get all the way through.

Durham, NC band Fust have announced their highly anticipated new album Big Ugly, due out March 7th via Dear Life Records.
